Same to me. In some part of the path it comes two paths, one to the left and the other to the right. How he knows which one is the correct? That was crazy, and by himself, oh no!
For me, the most suspicious thing is why the girls decided to move further. After the mirador, it doesn't make any sense to go further as there is no sign of anything special to explore as a conventional tourist. I think 90% of people like me will decide to back unless there is enough time, preparation, properly equipped with hiking experience.
Because the sign at the end of the path is not legible. That was said in Spanish: "Do not still walking to the other path without guide if you do it is under your own risk" something like that but like a told you: sign isn't legible and Spanish.
This is great to see a full walkthrough like this. I appreciate you sharing. I find this whole path pretty creepy in general being enclosed in a lot of it and with all the mud and whatnot.
definitly! Only explaining for me is they must have thought it is a circular path and they would have to continue this way. Otherwise it makes no sense to go even deeper in the jungle, as they already where walking 2 hours to that spot.
Scary trail.... Imagine that at night... Or after a heavy rain ...Or getting late in time on that.... Also lots of alternative paths to cattle avoid the narrowest paths...
I agree, it's not funny to stay there at night (unless you have a camp of course). That why it's always important to bring a flashlight with you. Happened to me once on a trip in Ethiopia, and because of that, I got lost for 40 minutes (glad I had the light of my phone and that my camp was near). Actually the alternative paths are used by the locals to avoid the mud.I guess the cattle use it as well.
@@Romain_C I had an encounter with a giant bull on a road that had fences on both sides. And frightened cattle can be more dangerous than angry cattle. So I [and the byke] jumped over to the other side of the fence. I recorded everything after the jump on video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VEMCZSyUu2w.html
My theory is that the girls got lost that first day and, rightly fearing they couldn't hope to get back even to the Mirador by nightfall even if they found the scary trail again, they, being prudent, called the Dutch emergency number while there was still some light left. Then, not long later, they faced the darkness and an ever increasing burden of woes.
I'm watching this video again because the first time I passed trough very quickly... 21:43 I wonder if one of those many loose stones close to the walls around all the trail fell upon one of the girls feet...24:09. well. this is very confusing... You do not see this secondary trail when descending North of the Mirador but when you turn climbing towards Mirador it's there... I wonder if there is such places beyond the first or second quebrada... If so, there is a good chance that the girls got lost after all... I have 30 years of hikking experience and I surely can tell that sometimes a large brunch falls upon the trail. If a branch falls upon the main path in 24:09 [just before the time the people are returning up the trail] the secondary path becomes much more a trap...You can take it thinking that this secondary path is the main path.... Remember... Nature is full of chaos and it can happens... You guys get it? Paths and trails are every time changing... Also. Few people seems to remember that the girls took this trail for the first time ever.... And without a guide... That's crazy....Also called my attention that seems to be a lot o people interfering in this path: 35:42 there is even some stones on the ground creating deviation to water don't acumulate in the path and creating secondary paths to the cattle... Maybe some secondary paths lead to houses. Now imagine if the girls went out the trail due to "bathroom" reasons [avoid people seeing you...] or somebody chase them in that path... It would be much more easy they got lost... A foul play plus lost scenario is more plausible to me.
(2:00 and 3:15) wow.....no, this path would not be for me, you have to climb the pianista without me! 😬 This constant tightness, this deep match, the oppressive air and the heat would blow me away! But I still find the trail beautiful and interesting! Hats off for climbing the Pianista Trail all by yourself, correct! Great video! 👍
I can't imagine being in one of those trenches and encountering someone coming toward me..I would have to be very close to a stranger and shimmy past them? or if they were following behind me..creepy.
What a dirt hole - and that‘s the path. Imagine the rest of it and being lost there. No foul play needed, hot pants (stance) is just enough to get you killed in that environment.

Thanks for sharing this! I searched for a clip like this. I wanted to know more about this trail and the difficulty of it. Thanks for sharing this! I also assume that it’s easy to take the wrong path… I probably would do so…

I can't believe that Kris and Lisanne only took one photo after the top of the El Mirador, and then only taking 2 photos at the water crossing? I just don't get it. How can you not take all kinds of photos along this trail.
Just a thought, but maybe they planned to take more photos the next day, when they took the tour with "Tour Guide F"... But who knows? There's so many unanswered questions.
Bonjour Romain, Good work! Have you noticed the two long metal cables crossing the trail at 20:07? The close-up at 20:13 also shows a rusty part of one of the cables. Now what are two rusty cables supposed to be doing in the middle of the jungle? As if that weren't enough: have you also noticed the METAL PIPE sticking out from the ground? It is visible as from 42:50, on the left side of the screen. At 43:05 you can see its orifice and diameter. Now what is an L-shaped metal pipe doing in the middle of the jungle? Next time you go there, I'll join you!
the "cables" are just vines. also similar to the ones you can see wrapping around trees. they are parasites that steal nutrients from trees. i 100% saw the metal pipe you mentioned at 42:50 though. that's weird! seriously.
I can't see after hiking to the summit they would keep going deeper in to the jungle. I'm just imagining my self there as a foreigner for the first time. This whole situation just feels so much like someone else was involved. They trusted someone to see something, i hope we know what really happened one day.
Was the location of the camera photos at night , ever located? Does anyone know? It almost seems they were possibly in a small cove seeking shelter from the rain. But perhaps not a very good shelter since rain drops can be seen not far from the camera. Perhaps just shelter enough that they were not getting soaked in the rain?
There was a guy on Reddit who thought he'd found it. Convinced me, in a way. He found pictures that showed rocks & trees that looked a lot like those from the night pictures, including one specific tree that seemed to match exactly (after accounting for some tree growth, since the new pictures were taken some years after the weird night ones were taken). It was by one of the two monkey bridges (he was not sure which one), which makes sense, in a way, as a spot to stay, based on the theory that people must use such bridges occasionally, and so the girls could have felt this gave themselves a chance to be seen and rescued. They'd have water there, too. This would mean, though, that, since they were near a path, they must have lacked the strength or confidence necessary by then to follow it and try to find civilization themselves. Later, and perhaps not long later, their strength gave out, or Kris became comatose or dead and Lisanne left and made an gallant effort to go find help. But they both ended up being washed into the river, either way, where later some of their remains were found. Assuming they took the pictures, of course... No doubt, though, there are other people who've also felt they've cracked the case of the night photo location and have evidence that also seems compelling. One problem with this case is that many threads seem plausible when you're following them -- but of course, only one thread can be true.
I saw a documentary explaining that rescue crews did not search beyond the mirador until the backpack washed up on the riverbank near Alta Romero about two months after the girls went missing... sadly
@semre gob this one might be around 64 days from the disappearance. They show the Dutch dog search team or a recreation and searching on the pianista trail and near Boquete but not beyond. Can't remember the exact documentary. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F27uqS4RRiQ.html

The long-awaited video from the trail! Excellent filmed. Thanks a lot! It's like I personally went through. A very difficult path. I strongly doubt that there are cows walking there, as previously stated. The trail is inconvenient, even in dry weather water will trickle down. The trail often bifurcates and even gets ruffled. But they said that there is nowhere to turn! It is very easy to go the wrong way. Yes, and get injured, there is nothing to break loose. The descent is steep. Typical jungle. The operator also stumbled several times and slipped.
Totally agree. The more I think about it, the more I realise the accident/lost theory is very plausible. This trail is treacherous and I am surprised the girls didn't turn back much sooner.
I agree with your comment, but there is footage of cattle being brought along these paths. Locals bring them up to the ‘paddock’ that is about half an hour after the river crossing that photo 508 is taken.
This is the earliest recorded video by the Kremers back in August 2014. Tell me if you see cows and people crossing the path on the way to the Mirador. :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cF_9AfrKWKg.html Also you are looking at a video made in 2021 not 2014. A lot of terrain has changed, collapsed. Try to find the location for Photo 491 and you will see what I mean. Also note the overgrowth before Romain enters the forested area back in the first video of this series. If they fell or got injured anywhere here, SINAPROC would have found them as they did numerous tourists and guides who also got lost here. To just completely disappear into thin air, that's something only a magician or criminals can achieve.
I'm happy you liked the footage ;) Actually, in part 3 you will see some cows on the trail. Locals let their cattle free in the area of the paddocks, and they sometimes also bring their horses there.
Still would like to know where those night pictures are taken from. It looks like they are sitting on some sort of a cliff or a boulder. Surely there's not that many places, where moss hasn't taken over the whole rock right ?
While the trail looks fairly straightforward in many places, I wonder if they did something as simple as intentionally step off the trail to pee, then lose their orientation. This happened to a hiker nicknamed "inchworm" in the Adirondacks and she eventually starved to death.
Indeed. I've been working in the rainforest for 27 years, in locations and trails like Pianista. I've already left the trail to photograph an animal or flower and that's it: I was lost. This happens in parts where the trail is narrow... If they went beyond the Mirador and came back with less sunlight, the probability of them getting lost is even greater... I've got seriously lost like 5 times in tropical forest: the most of these times were when I did the trail for the first time and without GPS. The light changes inside the trail, double paths only seen on the return, fog, etc all of this can make you get lost...
@@videosdeecologia7468 They're in the mountains a week after spring equinox. Sun sets in two minutes. They're doddering about in the forest and realize they're lost.
I went hiking along a popular forest trail near my city a while back with my dog. He spotted something off trail and just took off. I walked in his direction for about 30 seconds, dodging bushes and trees and stopped when I saw him running back towards me. I turned around and started walking towards where I thought the trail was. After a minute I realized I still hadn't found the trail and was dumbfounded. I was so sure I had simply retraced my steps. Thankfully a minute later I heard chatter from other people walking the trail and I managed to find it again. I recall reading that Kris and Lisanne may or may not have had a dog with them that belonged to the Pianista restaurant. When I read that tidbit I immediately thought of my experience nearly getting lost in a forest after following my dog. I always wondered if something similar happened to the girls. That is, the dog would suddenly veer off the trail and they followed it and then eventually not being able to get back on the trail again..
I wonder if jaguar’s and cougars might use that same tight path 🤔 you’d be pretty snookered if you met one coming the opposite way! I’m going to be doing this trail solo next month, although you’re not supposed to I’m might have to take a look at the other side of the continental divide, best hope it doesn’t rain at that point too a flash flood there would be alarming. Great vid thanks 👍🏼

Hi Romain, looks like a straightforward path even after so many years of erosion and change. Some forks in the path here and there, but Lisanne and Kris seemed to manage to make it all the way to the first river all by themselves in that span of time, which is impressive. Of course they had sunny and dry weather to make it possible. To keep going past the first river makes no sense to me as according to Victor Hugo's wonderful video, there wasn't much to look at. And no photos of so many sections of this trail all the way to River 3 makes no sense either. Were you able to find all the locations of the photos along the trail? I'm curious about 491 and 506 - where are they in your videos (time code)? Thanks
The path in itself, aside the rocks and the inconvenience of the slope, is not that hard to follow. You just have to follow the path and you'll end up at the rivers down there. Since 505 was taken at 13h20 (we can assume they left the Mirador at around 13h15) and then reached 508 at 13h55 (more precisely 13h54m58s), they took at least 40 minutes to get at the river. That's fast, but I also managed to reach river 2 (will appear in part 2, and can be seen on the video of Victor and in our article on ImperfectPlan) in 30 minutes. So, not impossible. For 491 and 506, I havn't spotted precisely the locations. However, my guess for 491 would be somewhere after the first river crossing on El Pianista (El Pianista part 2). And 506, somewhere on that video.
@@Romain_C Actually, according to many witnesses, the girls didn’t make it to the beginning of the Pianista trail until around 4:30 PM only!!! And that’s *way off* the timeline that you are providing here. Most likely their photocamera’s time and date were tampered with… And also most likely, the girls never even made it to these places but the photos were photoshopped. Have you ever considered that possibility? Did you see these channels? BackpackerCoach and Juan (“You don’t fool me” YT channel, I believe) They discuss and elaborate on this theory in depth and in detail…
@@Romain_C Hello, thank you for these great videos! Some audio cut, is there a particular reason? And did you do this trail alone? It looks like you did. Doesn't seem very safe to do this all alone. Unless people were behind you? Please, if possible, upload these videos again but with the pictures taken by Lisanne & Kris edited in as Matt K recommended. It would be nice to see exactly where they were taken and how much is still looking the same or changed.
I think 505 was taken between 4:10 and 4:15. Look at the rock in the middle, the trees around, and then more importantly that big brown/red fern leaf on the right that is hanging just in the right place as the strange coloured object in 505.

We have to remember that the first distress call was made when there was plenty of daylight left, and it was placed at a time that I think the girls should have been turning around and heading back to Boquette. I guess the distress call could have been triggered by one of the girls twisting her ankle, but in that situation I would’ve hobbled back to Boquette no matter how excruciating my ankle pain was. So why did they not turn around and back track to Boquette?
, Well, that's it WHY didn't they turn back, it may of been more than a sprained ankle. what gets me is why one never left the injured girl and went for help? both i think must have been injured?? need a time machine to sort this one out, poor girls.
They called the emergency services. But didn't return to the village. Why? They thought they where lost. One or both where injured. But it looks like they went further along the track.. Why? Need a time machine to sort this one out.

Thanks, very cool that you did this - also the 4 parts to the mirador so well filmed !!! It must have rained a lot it seemed even more dangerous, difficult and eery, great job. But still in this video you lost me around 31:30 when you stopped to .. rest, take photos ? I think you explained something but unfortunately there is no sound, if you said something...? and then you... turned back? Took a different path? I didn't get it. I scrolled the video back time and again, but here it seemed at 34:36 you just turned back? It sure didn't look like you went into the dark area that was ahead before you stopped. However, this hike was very interesting. I have now seen a ton of videos, old and new, of El Pianista and it seems like it is a different trail every single time, depending on who hikes it. I don't mean the natural changes from storms, erosion, fallen trees, rain and weather. But major differences. How come you never crossed that little stream that everybody else seems to come across within 20 - 30 min after the mirador (pic 507/508) ? How come the parents went past the mirador, crossed that little stream and ended up in an open farmland area with fences within an hour? How many El Pianistas are there? I really hoped your video would clear my many questions but now I am more confused than before. The only thing that your work made absolutely clear, is that there must be numerous hidden foot paths and cuttle paths from start to far northeast and northwest, possibly connecting all the trails in the area. I read there are paths on the Pianista that connect it with the Sendero Culebra and Caldera river, but nobody seems to know exactly where or they won't tell. Do you know? It would have been great to see your route and where you were approximately at the end of the video, and also what would have been the actual time (without editing). But again, Thank you for so much work and effort and the brillant quality. Though I didn't know where we went, I still enjoyed the hike :)
Thank you very much! For 31:30, I was just looking for a place to fall, checking if there was a signal (there wasn't) and talking about it but I prefered to remove the talk to avoid making people confused. I just stopped and then went on the same path. That day, the hike was done at a very slow pace to record properly and to look closely to the different slopes. So it's normal it doesn't match any normal timing. There is just one single trail. The other paths you saw are just side trails going to the same place, the Mirador. For El Pianista, I might have to make a video/article to explain the different possibilities of El Pianista. However, indeed you could technically reach the places you mentioned but not directly. I have an idea to make a video about the monkey bridges, so I will see how I can fit in there the trail. "It would have been great to see your route and where you were approximately at the end of the video, and also what would have been the actual time (without editing)." Actually, I could try to add the approximate start/end location for each part but I will have to compare with my gps data. I will think about that possibility. It's easy when there is a key point, but when it's just a trail, it's more difficult to know exactly where.
@@Romain_C thank you so much for your explanation, so you did go further and not back! Great! Believe me I know it is difficult, it's a hell lot of work you did - But if you could really manage to give sort of a estimate location on a map to these videos and note the actual hiking time (in case you edited / cut parts out) that would be so helpful and nobody else ever seems to do it properly. I am so looking forward to part 2. It is nice that you do it slowly so it is clear and more detailed. Your work is VERY much appreciated, I bet by everyone who watches this
Thank you very much ! I think I will make a caltopo map to show what each part represents on the trail. It's too late to edit a map for part 2 because it's already uploaded on youtube. However, I could put instead a caltopo link in the description later. From part 3, it's taking me a lot of time because I have to blur a lot of parts, and I'm very cautious in hiding any elements that could help to identify the persons (I think it took me 10 hours to do the blurring in part 3; part 2 was quick because I had only two people to blur). So, that's why I'm publishing a part once a week (to give me the time to get the next part ready and avoid to publish two parts several weeks apart). What's more, I think it gives people more time to analyse each part, than it would be if the parts were published all at once. Discussing the timing would be good in a video/article about the monkey bridges.

It's impossible to get lost on this pianist's trail, as most of the way is through a trench. At relatively short intervals, we always see other people using the trail, there are houses nearby, some places are pasture for cattle, where certainly the owners always go to pick up or leave their animals. If the girls had continued beyond photo locations 507 and 508, they would have continued taking pictures, and if they had gone back, they would have taken pictures as well. The fact that they didn't do this within 6 days of the disappearance, to me, is proof that the camera and cell phones were not under the control of the girls. Note: It is very likely that the place for the night photos is on the Quetzal Trail and not on the pianist's trail! Or they were made on some path that connects the Pianist Trail with the Quetzal Trail.
@@gracecv9990 Because it wasn't the girls with the camera or the cell phones. A third took those night shots and also simulated calls to emergency numbers. Hi Romain, how are you doing? Just wanted to ask you about some specific details in the video, and if you also noticed them while you were hiking, as some of us have been discussing these details to understand what they could be. @ 20:01 on the left of the frame, is that part of a pipe? @ 20:17 is that some kind of electric cable or part of tree root structure? If it is a cable then I wonder where do you think that leads to since it looks like you also may have noticed it and stopped to look around at that point? And long has it been there? I don't see any moss on it or any kind of natural growth I would expect to see if this was part of a live or dead tree. @43:09 to the left of the frame slightly hidden by the leaves you can see a rusty structure that looks like another pipe. You also stop at this point, but not sure if you noticed it. Are there any makeshift dwellings that you know of in this area? Thanks Romain👍
Hello Pixie! No problem, I can clarify these details. For every timestamps, there is no man made structures along the trail. It's just vegetation. The only structures you can meet on the trail are sometimes gates (to stop the cattle by closing them), the fences at the paddocks and few times planks on the ground.
I think photo 505 was at 4:10 to 4:15. The triangle rock, the trench faces, the brown/red leaf on The right looks in just the right place as it would be in picture 505
It wasn't raining at the time they get lost. And they called the european emergency number 112 on the first day. The panama emergency would be 103. USA Emergency is 911. One thing is for sure, they had to be near a river before they died (if you rule out fould play).
Hey gang? It’s a slotted canyon. Obviously it doesn’t “loop around” and past Mirador one cannot “fall off” as there are walls of mud everywhere. Back to the Panamanian locals. Who all believe it was foul play….
2 other cases in America (2001 and 2010) where hikers got injured/lost and were out for 6 days and 9 days respectively. Mary Owens was lost on Mount Hood for 6 days. She made an audio recording to her family on her phone. Jason Rasmussen was lost in the North Minnesota headwaters. He wrote a lengthy, detailed goodbye on birch bark and took a selfie w/ his camera waving goodbye (very haunting). Personally I no longer believe anything from the Prosecutor Pitti office. “They got lost” was a junk hypothesis from day one
@@RideAcrossTheRiver It was a recording to say goodbye to their families, provide them a little closure, and spare them a tiny bit of grief. What exactly is your problem?
@@Hella-hx1ro There was no pressure. They got lost, and they were looking for them in the wrong place. Because in my opinion girls were at the crossing.
Me neither....I like open vistas to see what is ahead. This is really claustrophobic. Also very hard terrain underfoot. Chances of an injured ankle or similar are likely on this kind of terrain.
45:34 In 2010-2011 I worked in a rainforest in Ilhéus, Brazil. Guess what was one of the main causes of death in people who worked / walked / did research in the forests in that region? Bromeliad fall! Some bromeliads weighed 100 kg and when it rained, their weight increased and the sustaining tree branches broke... If one were there, I would be dead... As I said, the forest is full of unimaginable dangers. Also strange people inside the forest is the ultimate danger... examples: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fcVXTURR4Pg.html 51:31 this is a good place for a fall...
One of the girls Lisanne had her foot broken. They found her foot in her boot broken, i am wondering if that is the reason for the early 911 call. Maybe she slipped or something fell on her boot like a heavy rock. So many unknowns. It sure is muddy when it rains.
