I was privileged to have debated veteran journalist in Jamaica, the late Ian Boyne before his passing in December 2017, on the issue of the Sabbath and if its keeping is mandatory for New Covenant Christians. I argued against its mandatory keeping while Ian argued for it. I hope that you enjoy this debate.

Excellent interview! I enjoyed the way it played out; had fun with it too! I was smiling and laughing as I saw, what seemed to me, him struggling to come up with opposing views 😁 His arguments SOUNDED strong but fell flat on its face with your rejoinder! I saw him as literally fishing for those arguments. Here's my beliefs regarding the Sabbath - which I'm happy to state - is in harmony with your views and statements. Yes, the record of God resting and sanctification of the 7th day is plain in Gen. 2:2-3. It cannot be denied - but what is absent is that there's absolutely no record of Him giving that command to anyone; not Adam; neither Noah, Abraham, Isaac nor Jacob until Mt. Sinai. These people - Gentiles, all of them '- listened to and obeyed God by Faith, in the absence of any written code. If there had been one, it would have been recorded for our learning. There's also no record that the Israelites had the Sabbath while slaves in Egypt. The Israelite Nation - as a whole - did not know God, then. Their behaviour in the wilderness suggest such. The Egyptians - Gentiles - did not know God; Pharaoh's response to Moses in Ex. 5:2 attests to that fact. Moses was away from Egypt 40 years before God called him. Due to his conversation with God, we can assume that he knew of God but didn't have a personal relationship with Him. How could anyone before Moses had these set of Laws containing the Sabbath Commandment when Scripture says that the Law was given by Moses? (John 1:17) Therefore, how could the Gentile population - all the other nations - before Moses - have the Law and the Sabbath when they didn't know God? And that Law hadn't been given to the Israelites yet?Jesus Himself told the Pharisees - Jews, not Gentiles - "Did not Moses give you the Law...?" (John 7:19) (Looks like I'm already into Part 2, the NT 🙂 - but that's the thing; the Bible is a unified whole; Scripture connects; there's a Theme, an unbroken thread - and I find that this thread is often snipped and roughly tied with Adventism) As you pointed out to the Host - regarding writing into Scripture what is not recorded - one can make a determination as to the meaning of Scripture and flesh it out in their minds, visualizing events as it might have happened, in order to gain better understanding, but I think there's a danger in injecting into Scripture what is not recorded. God is not the author of confusion; He gave us enough to understand and live by and Rom. 14:5 says it all. The Sabbath is not obligatory. Paul, an Israelite, a Jew, who grew up under the Law and observed it then with a passion, did not even mention the Sabbath by name - and I find that interesting. Finally, I believe that Adam's "sabbath - rest" was when he was spending time with God. Man had God's physical presence - but sin changed all that, destroying the kind of relationship which God had intended to have with His creation. But then, Good News - the Gospel - He restored that relationship with mankind by His promises to Abraham through Israel, through Jesus, through Whom we receive His Spirit, His indwelling Spirit...God's Presence within mankind by Faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. The name Emmanuel, meaning "God with us," is not there by accident! (Matt. 1:23)

The pre-Sinai Sabbath had a condition of God providing manna. That manna ceased. But a better manna has been provided. A manna from heaven. This bread of heaven is true life and it is not gathered physically for six days neither is the rest physical from gathering on the seventh day. Jesus is our manna from heaven, it is gathered and consumed in a spiritual manner, daily.

Holy Communion is a New Covenant institution established by Christ Himself. And guess what day after His resurrection he broke bread with His disciples to establish this Holy Communion? It's not on Saturday. Noooo ... but IT WAS ON THE DAY HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD ! THE SAME DAY PENTECOST TOOK PLACE. THE CHURCH WAS BORN. SUNDAY !* 🙏🏽🙂

Good stuff glory to God. You made a very profound statement in this video about the fact that God's creation Sabbath should have never ended!Therefore, everyday in God's presence free from sin would have been a sabbath! That is very true! If sin had never entered Adam and Eve would have had continual REST in God's Presence! Now Jesus Came to Restore that! He came to repair the breach and give us rest (Matthew 11:28) from our labour of sin if we abide in his Spirit (Galatians 5:16-19) and eventually we will enter into to his ETERNAL SABBATH. Praise God, I am being edified by this!Praise Jesus!

Yes, every day would have been a rest in terms of no sin. But every day could not have been a LITERAL Sabbath in terms of public communal worship if everone was doing manual labor on that day. The Sabbath commerates that we worship the TRUE creator. Yes, it can symbolize other things, Paul draws other parallels between the Sabbath and other things, but the PURPOSE it was given was a memorial of Creation. Exodus 20.
@ReverendThunder
@ReverendThunder 4 года назад
@@JaxCover nothing in Scripture remotely suggests that the Sabbath is THE EXCLUSIVE day of worship, nor that it is THE memorial of creation. Psalm 19:1 and Romans 1:18-20 are more than clear that it's creation and its complex, powerful intelligent Des that memorialize Creation and God's power. Not the Sabbath. You Sabbatarians need to think these punchlines and arguments through before regurgitating them. The Sabbath does not exist in space, nor can be kept there. Should I take it that God can't be known nor worshipped by astronauts in space? Again, research these things carefully before just regurgitating them. The Sabbath is not a Jewish institution because it was instigated by God from the creation of the world and that was long before any Jew and the religion of Judaism even existed. The Sabbath is God's institution, it is His day which He made Holy from the beginning of our world and anyone saying anything otherwise from that is dead wrong.

It's interesting the point elce is trying to make, in one breath he is saying that the Genesis account of the Sabbath is only a model explained as God working and resting once so that should mean that Israel should have one final lasting rest and then say that the Sabbath being observed is an ordinance to be observed only by Jews and or gentiles who so chooses, there is no consistency in these points, because if he were to say that the Sabbath commanded was to pattern the one in Genesis as he understands it then his arguments should be that there is no weekly Sabbath and not that it is just for Jews and optional use

In my opinion, Sabbath was given to Israel because they did not know how to cease work and not worship other gods. God wanted to teach them and for them to learn these things so that they could cease their work, be still, and worship The Only True God, to remember what they were coming from (Egypt) and remember what not to do so that they could do what they were supposed to do (worship Him). God just wanted to be able to bless them, but their faith was lacking in order for that to occur.

False. "For in six days the Lord created the heavens and Earth, the sea and all that in them is and rested on the seventh day. Wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it." It is plain as it can be. Notice Elce said there was no Sabbath in Genesis chapter 2 but Exodus 20 shows you what was blessed and hallowed in Genesis was in fact the Sabbath day! Hey Thunder 🙂: I've noticed that the creation days from the 1st -6th ended with, "And the evening and morning were the.....day" but that is absent in creation day 7. I see the 7th day as being "open." Is that in line with God's open ended invitation to enter His rest spoken of in Hebrews 4? What do you think?
@ReverendThunder
@ReverendThunder 8 месяцев назад
That's correct. God entered into a state of perpetual rest ever since, and man was supposed to remain in that rest with Him, but sin broke it. Hence the invitation of Hebrews 3-4 calling us to enter into that rest by embracing the Gospel when we hear it.

And while all the points were being made consider that Israel was never at any point at any time reprimanded by God for not living the Sabbath every day, for breaking out of eternal Sabbath rest. Every rebuke, reproof, act of judgment or correction of any kind was done against working on the Sabbath, so it seems God himself didn't understand why he gave the law or how it was to be kept.

I like the point on marriage in Genesis. It's obvious that marriage is not an ordinance required to be kept by all of mankind, but if I had to choose between marriage being required or seventh day rest being required, I would choose marriage because marriage was specifically instituted for mankind, but the rest spoken of is God's rest not man's rest. So if marriage is not required how can seventh day rest be?
@JaxCover
@JaxCover 4 года назад
Is there a mandate to GET married, or is the mandate to adhere to the marriage covenant once you enter into it? If the 7th day is blessed and sanctified, how do we treat something that is called holy? What ought our relationship be to it? The day is sanctified, set apart for a holy use. So, what ought we to be doing each time the day comes around?

Confucius wrote of the ancient history of China possibly as far back as the dispersing of the people at the tower of Babel: "The ancient kings on this culminating day (speaking of the seventh day) closed their gates, the merchants did not travel and the princes did not inspect their domains." M’Clatchie, "A Translation of the Confucian Classic of Change," page 118 Ancient Chinese characters that date back five thousand years or more tell the same story. The ancient Chinese character word for godliness (chien) depicts people in clean dress on the seventh day inside a tent, and the word for humble (su) depicts two people in a tent with hands uplifted in prayer on the seventh day. The fact that another character from the same time period, the word for boat (chuan), depicts eight people in an ark tells us that these ancient characters must have come from as far back as the days of Noah and the flood. These people were worshiping on the seventh day, the Sabbath; a custom that could only have been handed down to them by faithful Noah and his family.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FRmDS4fH57I.html New Covenant Christian Experience. If you think you know scripture read the following. With no additions or subtraction. Read how an Evangelist dealt with some of these issues; speaking at a public presentation. The following reveals what many do not understand; and further proves that a Sabbath to Sunday change in the Bible is absolutely impossible. “I had just finished preaching on the subject of the Sabbath in one of my evangelistic outreach programs. I stepped off the platform to greet people as they were leaving. 3 young men blocked my way in the aisle. One of them addressed me in quite a loud voice loud enough to cause about 50 people near the front of the auditorium to stop and listen. “Dear brother” he said, “we were disappointed tonight, with the way you put us back under the Old Covenant; don’t you realise that we are living under the New Covenant, and should keep Sunday instead of the Sabbath?” Though the congregation were leaving the Church, a group near the front gathered closer to hear all that the young men were saying. It was obvious that I would have to take the time to answer the trio's challenging question. As I suspected, they turned out to be young seminarians in training at a local Bible college. Eagerly they held their Bibles in their hands and waited triumphantly for me to answer. Usually, I do not like to debate controversial matters in a public forum, for fear of stirring up combative natures, but there seemed no way to avoid dealing with these ministerial students, who had my path completely blocked and the circle of listeners looked at me expectantly for some explanation. “Well, it seems as though you have studied the subject of the Covenants quite deeply,” I suggested. “Oh, yes,” they affirmed, “we know all about the Covenants.” “Good,” I replied. “You undoubtedly know when the Old Covenant was instituted.” One of them spoke up quickly, “It was instituted at Mt. Sinai.” “And how was it ratified?” I asked. Without a moment’s hesitation one of them answered, “By the sprinkling of the blood of an ox(Bull).” “Very good,” I commented, “and how was the New Covenant ratified?” All 3 chorused the answer, “By the blood of Jesus on the cross.” I commended the young men for their knowledge of the Scriptures and asked them to read me 2 verses out of their own Bibles. Galatians 3:15“Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; though it is only a man's covenant; yet if it is confirmed, no man annuls, or adds to it.” Hebrews 9:16-17“For where there is a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead: since it has no power at all while the testator lives.” They responded eagerly to the invitation, and read the verses, commenting on each one after reading. “We agreed that the New Covenant did not go into effect, until after Christ died; and nothing can be added or taken away after He ratified it on the cross,” the spokesman for the group asserted. All three nodded their heads emphatically over this point. I said, “Now you must answer two more questions for me. Here is the first one, and you must think carefully to give me the correct answer: When did Sunday-keeping begin?” There was a moment of shocked silence; the boys looked at each other, and then down at their feet, and then back at me. I gently prodded them for the answer, “Surely you can tell me the answer to this question. You have known all the others, and have answered correctly. When and why do you think people began keeping Sunday?” Finally, one of them said, “We keep Sunday in honor of the resurrection of Jesus.” I said, “Then I must ask you my last question. How could Sunday keeping be a part of the New Covenant? You just stated that nothing could be added after the death of Christ. He died on Friday and was resurrected on Sunday, if Sunday was added after Jesus died it could never be a part of the New Covenant could it?” The three young men shuffled their feet, looked helplessly around, and one of them said, “We will study into that and talk to you later.” They then fled from that auditorium as fast as they could go; I can assure you that they never returned to talk about the covenants.”

So we can lie cheat steal kill commit adultery and have no consequences according to what you are saying. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath the Pope is Lord of Sunday. When the Sunday law comes in it will be over the day of worship. 50 million people died at the hands of the Catholic Church over the day of worship. The Ethiopian Eunic went to Africa and spread the good news there were millions and millions of people in Africa keeping the sabbath until the Inquisition. David Livingston went to Africa and he found pockets of people still keeping the sabbath. In Russia there are many monuments about keeping the sabbath. I went to India where one of the apostles was killed they all keep the Sabbath. Interesting. Not one denomination would argue that Satan was kicked out of heaven for breaking one of the commandments of God. Jesus was crucified on Friday buried rested on the sabbath according to the commandments in the book of Luke and he rose on the first day of the week even Jesus at death kept the commandments. His last will and Testament he said not one shot not one title will be removed from the 10 commandments until heaven and earth disappear. Well according to the excitedpedia Botanica, the world has not disappeared yet. And you can ask any astronomer or physicist has the earth disappeared yet and the answer will always be no not yet. Even the book of Revelation clearly states here are they who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus. And the arc was opened in heaven and the testimony was seen. The 10 Commandments was put on the inside of the Ark. Moses law that was against us that was contrary to us that was nailed to the cross was put in a pouch on the outside of the Deuteronomy. If you have a will while you are alive it is of no importance. I will only comes into affect after the testor dies. Before Jesus went into the grave he said my Testament will not be altered will not be changed it will be still binding. In actual fact the first couple of words say {don't bring it to thought }. It's funny that when you ask a 10-year-old child what this means they give you a very clear answer.

Is. 66:22-23- “For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain. 23 From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD. (Sabbath will be kept in heaven and must be kept now.) If Isaiah 66:23 teaches that the “Sabbath will be kept in Heaven” and therefore must be kept now, by the very fact that chapter 65 & 66 form one contextual unit in describing the “New Heavens and Earth,” then it also means that: Literal Jerusalem is Heaven (65:18-19, 66:8, 10, 13, 20), Young men will die in heaven at 100 yrs old (65:20), Sinners will be there and live to be 100 yrs old (65:20), Accursed sinners will be there (65:20), The possibility of not enjoying one’s labour will exist (65:21-22), The possibility of labouring in vain and having children for disaster will exist (65:23), The possibility of animals hurting and destroying each other in heaven will exist (65:25), Animal and Grain offerings will be offered in heaven (66:3, 20), The flesh of pigs, rats, and abominable creatures will be eaten in heaven (66:17), Jewish missionaries will be sent to pagan, unconverted nations (66:19), The transport to Heaven will be on “horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries….” (66:20), Literal priests and Levites will minister there in the Temple (66:21), The New Moon festivals (which Adventism has NO INTENTION of keeping now nor in Heaven) will be kept (66:23), The dead bodies of rebels will be observed throughout eternity (66:24), The dead bodies of rebels will burn incessantly just outside of the city (66:24). A casual reading of Isaiah 65 and 66 will reveal that the passages are referring to the Exiles coming from Babylonian captivity and their home "Jerusalem" will be "AS/LIKE" a "new heavens and earth" compared to where they will be coming from--Babylon--and that God will bless them with conditions of long-life, prosperity, peace, the enjoyment of their labours, righteousness, continuous worship (“From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath” means- every day, every week, every month worship), restoration, justice, etc. These passages ARE NOT talking about the "New Heaven and Earth" of Revelation 21 & 22 (Rev. 21 and 22 reveal different conditions of life from what is described in Isaiah, i.e, no death, eternal life, no temple, no levitical priests, no night, perfect enjoyment of everything, timelessness, no sinners, the personal presence of God and Jesus, etc.)

I don't believe it is required for salvation, but falls under the umbrella of those who love Jesus will follow His commands. There are four areas in scripture I'm hoping you might help me understand the context on in regards to the Sabbath and your stance: I'm starting to doubt that the popular verses cited against the need for Sabbath-keeping really are addressing this issue at all. 1): "Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ."- Colossians 2:16 What I've Heard): I've heard arguments that Paul was writing to pagan converts and so those who would judge were those around these converts. That Paul is saying that these new traditions may seem alien to the surrounding pagan communities -- so don't let them dissuade you. Another argument is that this was addressing some form of gnosticism that was leading some of the converts astray and that this letter was to let the church know to not follow something other than what they have been taught directly. That the Law which includes Sabbath-keeping does not fit into the traditions of men because we know the Law to be good and Holy. Therefore it is saying that the Colossian converts should not feel bad for the keeping of feasts and sabbaths that these gnostic teachings may be criticizing them for. 2): "One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind." -Romans 15:5 What I've Heard): I've heard that because the entire epistle to the Romans doesn't mention Sabbath directly and that the context of this chapter talks about food and eating, that these esteemed days refer to fasting days. 3): "Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath." -Matthew 24:20 What I've Heard): This is Jesus speaking of the future tribulation to come. He is warning of the abomination that causes desolation and for those in Judea (Israel) when they see it, to flee the hills. So some are saying that Jesus recognizes that the Sabbath is still in effect even at that point (meaning that it hasn't been done away with). Some counter-argue that Jesus knew that the orthodox Jews would still be practicing and that it was prohibited for those in Israel to flee during a Sabbath. However, I've been to Israel, and even on the Sabbath, our tour guide said there are Israelis that don't practice the Sabbath (my tour guide as an example), yet she wasn't given a hard time (nor the bus driver etc..). Also, it seems there are Messianic Jews that still do keep the Sabbath so it seems like you'd really have to read into it to arrive at the conclusion that it's only because Orthodox Jews would be opposed and would try to prevent you; that there's no possibility that the Sabbath-keeping is still in effect. 4): Sabbath keeping was not mentioned in the New Testament but all the other 9 of the 10 commandments were. What I've Heard): Exclusion doesn't mean complete nullification. Jesus and the disciples kept the Sabbath. God made the Sabbath Holy since the creation of the world.

@@ReverendThunder Hi Elce, I hope you are well. I did have a chance to check out some of your more in-depth videos around Matthew 24 and the mention of the Sabbath. I guess I'm a little confused by the chronology of your interpretation because it seems like you are saying that parts of the prophecies Olivet Discourse already took place such as the abomination that causes desolation and flees on the Sabbath, but the others take place in the future like Jesus' second coming. But then Matthew 24:29 says that immediately after those days is Jesus' second coming? So I guess could you explain how you figured out the timeline or could you refer me over to a video where you go in-depth. I purchased and started reading your book: The Sabbath, What You Need To Know - but I don't think I saw anything thus far (maybe I missed it or haven't gotten there yet - I did skip around :P - sorry, but with work and class, time's a bit thin) about how your timeline was constructed. Do you believe that this single reference to the Sabbath and the difficulties that the disciples in Judea would face on it when Jerusalem is under siege somehow is a 1) command to keep the Sabbath, 2) discards everything else Scripture says about the Sabbath everywhere else, and 3) that Christians are currently bound to keep it? Help me understand the fixation to that single text about the Sabbath. Thanks for your diligence.

The Sabbath was instituted in the beginning.. God gave it to the Israelites because they were His chosen people. Who should He have given it too? So are you saying that the 10 commandments are not binding upon mankind today? Please read Isaiah 66:23. Why did God sent the flood if His laws weren't yet in existence? And why did He drove out the inhabitants of the nations surrounding Israel? Could it have been that their laws weren't matching up with the laws of God? The law wasn't given exclusively to Israel..they were to evangelize the nations around them and by extension, the entire world

I think that God's rest in Genesis is like the Sabbatismos in Hebrews. Sabbatism is like a state of being in which one has ceased from their works that we enter into by faith in the works of Christ not in our own works, we have ceased or rested from trying to obtain salvation by our works and instead are resting in the sufficiency of Christ's works. The seventh day in Genesis was pre-fall, pre-sin, there was no need for salvation, no need for man's works, it was Paradise. God was resting and was refreshed by His creation and the perfect condition of things. Man's eyes were not even opened by eating the fruit, man had no knowledge of anything except the "Sabbath" state of being that he was in. Any need for rest would be post-fall and Jesus was the promised remedy for the fall. Jesus give us our rest back that was lost. Jesus is our Sabbath. Jesus is more than that, He is the Lord of our Sabbath. We do what He wants when it comes to See keeping.

@Black Bear The new covenant is the SAME LAW. Not eliminating one commandment but keeping the other nine. Note that the new covenant changes the LOCATION. @JaxCover

@Black Bear Hebrews 4:10 absolutely is about a day off work. Hebrews 4:11 onward is about the eternal grace, yes. But verse 10 states that those who have entered into this rest of grace, SHOW IT by entering into the LITERAL day of rest like God did. Paul is making SEVERAL parallels and analogies here, not just one.
@JaxCover
@JaxCover 3 года назад
@Black Bear The text says that those who HAVE entered into this rest of Grace, do cease from our labors "AS GOD DID FROM HIS". What "labor's" did God rest from, that we are also to rest from? 1. A rest from a "works" based salvation? No, because God doesn't need to earn any salvation. So it's not those kind of works. 2. Secular works? Yes. Because that is the kind of works that God rested from after 6 days of creating. Therefore, the text is saying: Those who have entered into the rest of Grace, do *ALSO* enter the 7th day rest AS GOD DID. They Sabbath like God Sabbathed. We do what God does.

Before the commandments were written on stone at Sinai there was documentation of a knowledge of God’s law. In Genesis 26:5 God says Abraham regarded His laws and commandments. In Genesis 39:9 while there was no commandment written on stone saying not to commit adultery and Joseph was not living in the land of the Jews he still recognized even in Egypt sleeping with another man’s wife was sin. In Exodus 16 God tests the Jews to see if they would keep his Sabbath and His commandments even though they were not written on stone yet.

Why was the earth destroyed by flood if there were no morals laws at the time to determine who was evil or not? Why did God punish Pharaoh for taking Abraham's wife into his house? Elce commented "Man does not need Israelite laws to be moral, WE ARE inherently moral as God is inherently moral?..." This statement is an exact type as satan told eve "you shall not surely die"... in other words, satan told eve that she didn't needs to obey God, but that she could be just like him by her own doing and understanding. At this time of Elce quoting Romans 2:14, the new covenant was established in which God said I will write my laws on their hearts. Therefore, even tho they had no scriptures containing the law being read to them (hence having not the law "physically" present) it was written on the heart as God said he would do. And these were the same laws given to Israel. Especially seeing as how majority of the gentiles were lost Israelites. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord , I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jeremiah 31:33 KJV For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: ➡️Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts⬅️, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) Romans 2:14‭-‬15 KJV So the statement that we are (currently) inherently moral is false. We are inherently sinful as we have a sinful nature. We become moral by the guidance of the holy spirit which is what guides us to the Lord in the first place. Then also in the site of God through faith and rebirth. For the heart of men is deceitful without God, not moral.
