Electronic Ignition Install on Chevrolet Corvair

Today, I tackle a no spark issue that I have been having with my 1961 Corvair Lakewood. I will be installing a FAST XR 700 Optical Trigger electronic ignition. ssl.corvair.com/user-cgi/cata...
Follow along as I install this unit and go for a test drive.

i like the the PerTronix Electronic Ignition,,,got them in 4 of my corvairs,,,,an my 69 mach 1 ,,they are very good too

I have a 1961 chevy corvair lakewood and I am going to go with the hei distributer, I do hope it fixes some of my issues. And amazing wagon you have!

It says it will work on the 009 distributor. The kit comes with stuff for multiple applications.

Great video and nice car! Why not reuse the dust shield with the EI unit? I bought a Pertronix to install but based on what I'm hearing in forums, the FAST unit is more reliable.

Thanks! I could not use the dust shield as it would not fit over the sensors.

Still got it! It is just been out away for the winter. Have not had to do too much too it. I will have to redo the rockers at some point. I will definitely post a video when that project comes.

I had problems with my '71 Super Beetle. The car would act like the cluch was bad. I eventually found out it was a loose distributor rotor. You are better off with an electronic ign. Electronic ignition put a lot of gas stations garages out of business. Each gasoline would have "TUNE UP SPECIAL $25."

I've been.seeing a lot of things on utube about faulty automotive replacement parts coming from China.Kinda makes you wonder if it's on purpose. Check out Uncle Tony's Garage Do you have an electric fuel pump on the Corvair? Looks like you could use some shocks! You can make those cars handle very well.Thanks for the lessons!!

Has new shocks all around. Out if all our cars, this has the best ride. Installed a Holley Might Mite fuel pump by the fuel tank. Then I modified the old mechanical pump so I could still use the factory fuel line routing.

What about the vacuum advance? Aren’t you basically deleting it ?

The vacuum mechanism exists below the mounting plate for all of this and operates independently. One would only be removing the points and condenser. The vacuum advance will still function as normal. The electronic ignition simply removes the mechanical functions of the points opening and closing to create a spark signal.

So how is it going ..the ignition? Do I go to points or this for my 64 ??

So far so good. I have driven it about 120 miles since the swap. There definitely seem to be improvements. Starting is easier. Both from dead cold and after there has been some heat soak to the carbs. So far, I am pleased with the system.

I am installing one this weekend. Fingers crossed. I have a 64 I took it completely apart to replace all the seals and now it won’t start. It’s backfiring in the carbs. I bough the xr-700 and a new coil hopefully this will correct my issue thanks for the video
