The opening and naming of Elizabeth took place 67 years a go today, on the 16th of November 1955. Despite pressure to name the new town after himself, then Premier Sir Thomas Playford elected to name the new town after Her Majesty, Elizabeth the Queen of England. This video is made in honour of our Elizabeth Originals and their ensuing generations. Happy 67th Birthday Elizabeth. Much love, Will

Wow - 38 years. Very cool Christine. Yes, still a great place. I just wish the aesthetic history of the place had been better preserved

When my family came to Australia in 74 our Hostel experience was in Whyalla, but could have been fairly summed up by the witness statement from the Smithfield equivalent. Dust, Nissen Huts, Wire Fences and all...Weirdly ended up living in Smithfield a few years later, after the hostel there was demolished, and all that remained were some train tracks.

Yes, I think most Hostel experiences would be very similar in first hand experience. I'm currently working on a mini doc covering life at the Smithfield Hostel, and I think many who resided in other Hostels will relate to many of the recollections of previous Smithfield Hostel tenants. Hope to have it ready for next month....it's finding the time 😬

@@elizabeththatwas The Hostel I was at in Whyalla was named Milpara and was demolished sometime in the 80's I think. To me as 6yo boy it was like a safari adventure to a new land.... don't think my mum saw it that way.... I am interested to see the Smithfield Hostel when you have it ready. Keep up the good work mate
