In this interview by Simon from Keto Island, I discuss the roles of thiamine, how chronic deficiencies can often go unnoticed, and why a nutrient dense diet often does not resolve long-term deficits.
In this episode we discuss how overnutrition is leading to nutrient deficiencies often only seen in parts of the world affected by malnutrition and how the impact of thiamine deficiency on health may be more common that we think.
Listen in today as Simon and Elliot about the relationship between diet and chronic health issues and the impact on micronutrient deficiencies in the modern world and much more.

I can vouch for Elliot and his knowledge on thiamine. After a consult with him I started mega dosing Thiamine and Riboflavin and after a few days it lifted me out of debilitating headaches, depression and a broken down body that could barely move. I've spent 10's of thousands on specialists chasing some relief and this champion nailed it on the first consult and in under 90 min. Can't thank him enough and I'm looking forward to working with him in the future

Recently, I had megadosed about 1.5g of thiamine a couple times (and am considering high-dose riboflavin as well) to treat ADHD-induced anhedonia. It was too soon to tell its mental effects, but physically there was a huge difference in how effortless even walking became, and this is from somebody without fatigue. If I weren't on a budget, then I'd love to experiment more with thiamine megadoses. It can't hurt!

Elliot really is a genius. He's the ONLY nutritionist who constantly talks about thiamine (on YT I should say, Lonsdale has his blog)... and him constantly talking about thiamine is the ONLY REASON I began taking allithiamine. And I realized within 30 mins of taking benfotiamine.. my heart rate dropped so dramatically, I've always had a fast, racing heart... but for the 1st time in my life I couldn't feel my heartbeat. And immediately realized something was up. Then that same day ordered a giant bottle of allithiamine. I thought going into a food coma after eating a small bowl of rice & chicken was normal. I thought not being able to digest at least half of all my food was completely normal. That peeing 30-40 times a day was normal. I thought spending an hour every morning just taking minerals, aminos, vitamins was totally normal. I thought being depressed, anxious & tired most of my waking life... was perfectly normal. And what's crazy is thiamine hydrochloride was one of the first vitamins I bought years back. I merely went through 1 bottle, didn't notice much (other than more energy/slightly better mood) but that wasn't enough to catch my attention. Moving to the fat soluble thiamines was a totally different story. Now after 3 weeks of benfotiamine (150mg) and allithiamine (100mg) I can't even begin to explain how different I feel. Eating food no longer makes me feel like I'm eating poison. It actually gives me energy again rather than taking naps. I pee so much less. I've already had to cut my minerals as they feel so much stronger. My mood is better, my attitude, my stress coping & anxiety, my motivation... everything is slowly improving. I still have "detox days" where I feel horrible, but it was much worse weeks 1 & 2. And now I'm gonna up my allithiamine likely to 200mg a day. Elliot if you ever open up a practice by NY or NJ I would like to take my whole family to see you. Or maybe just pay you for virtual consultations because MANY in my family have these symptoms. They've paid thousands for useless treatments & I'm the only one in the family actually getting healthier now. I've noticed a lot of italians seem to be thiamine deficient because we're raised on macaroni, pasta & coffee. When I was young every other day we had pasta or macaroni for dinner and looking back now it all makes sense why I developed this problem. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THE WORLD A GENUINELY BETTER PLACE YOU ARE AWESOME. And thank you for perpetuating the message of Lonsdale & Marrs in a format (YT) that can now be found by younger people who refuse to read. Thank you thank you thank you.

Doctors suspected a virus then MS but were no help. I was completely nonfunctional. High Vitamin supplements got me out of bed and eventually 95 % well. I agree, the modern environment we live in probably necessitates nutritional supplementation. The liver needs much greater support in order to detoxify exposure to various pollutants e.g. pesticides. The liver is very B-vitamin hungry when performing these tasks, as lots of energy is needed for the functioning of phase 1 and 2 detoxification enzymes. It's a shame that people, even in the alternative health space seem to disregard nutritional supplements, I think perhaps it's because they are unfamiliar with functional health and it's testing.

I think this has been an issue for me at least since I was 8 - well over 50 years (I had a year of physical stressors - very strange and unusual ones, including surgery and psychological trauma - so that was the trigger year). I've been disabled for nearly 20. And what you say about weight is true for me. I've never eaten much of any sweets & junk food (don't keep it in my house and we were too poor when I was a kid). But I noticed early that my body doesn't handle carbs. When I feel better, weight falls off of me, and when I get worse, weight piles on. I'm eating more when I'm more slender (120 lbs for a 5'6" woman), but I still couldn't eat a lot of carbs, but I could eat more, and I'm not fully well even when I'm in that state. And then, something happens that sends my health into a spiral and the weight comes on and won't come off. (This has continued during disability though feeling better is measured in smaller degrees.) I know people look at me and assume I'm well fed (I'm just shy of being overweight re BMI @ 154lbs), but it's too much weight for my body, as it's mostly in my gut and my waistline is too big. Also, because I've not been well since I was 8, I haven't each hardly any processed foods in my entire life (e.g., food allergies and labels in foods showing too many additives and such). We didn't eat processed foods in my home growing up either. It annoys me that the assumption is that we heavier people are eating bad food. I've had health care professionals tell me that Fibro (one of my conditions) is because of what I eat. I could slap them upside their f'ing heads. They are not in my home; they have no clue how clean my diet is. I'm also pre-diabetic, and I have been for over 20 years, despite eating a diet most people with diabetes would be advised to eat. I did a keto like diet before it was named keto, but that only lasts for a while re energy. (And it cured the chronic diarrhea I was having.) I couldn't afford to keep up with the vitamins (loads - including high doses of Bs three times a day) and the pistachios and sunflower seeds that seemed to help. (I'd researched all of the potential nutrient deficits that I had, but I didn't write down what I did and so that was lost to time.) I didn't know what it was about what I was doing that was actually helping me, but in the end I discovered that keto alone wasn't it. (When I tried it later after developing chronic diarrhea again, it didn't solve it and after a year I fell into total disability and had diarrhea for 10 years.) So, I thought what I did was coincidental - that it was a spontaneous recovery (yet, still incomplete). That said, I knew, even suspecting that keto might be part of the issue, I needed to eat oats (some carbs in my diet) and so I have. I'm probably within the Candida guidelines re carbs because of how I've gotten used to eating even with eating my morning oats. I've looked at the SNPs related to thiamine and I have numerous mutations, particularly the TPP SNPs. I'm just now organising liposomal glutathione (have other supports in place) so I can increase my thiamine consumption. I've been taking 120mg for a while now. 100 Benfotiamine and 20mg HCL - to no benefit of course. I'd gone up to 500mg a day of Benfotiamine because I'd heard high doses help, but didn't know about the 1800mg therapeutic level, and so, I dropped back down when nothing happened, figuring that wasn't the issue. I've ordered the TTFD and TPP forms, because I suspect a genetic issue with TPP, and will begin this process soon. I have homozygous MTHFR and have finally figured out what my body needed to get folate levels up last year (magnesium in a form my body could handle... without it I couldn't have more than a crumb without serious side effects and with it, instantaneous ability to consume as much folate as I wanted). It wasn't a moment too soon as I'd developed megaloblastic anemia. I'd given up trying to find a magnesium supplement I could handle because my serum levels were normal (learned that's not a sign that they are in fact normal), but I discovered that a symptom I was having meant that I was in fact low in magnesium and then I stumbled onto magnesium glycerate.

Another superb presentation that every medical student, internist and primary care physician should watch. Would like discussion on thiamine and kidney function - have stage 4 ckd initiated by acute kidney failure from doctor-prescribed lisinopril/ibuprofen interaction. Too numerous to count adverse side effects from other pharmaceuticals, but no help for kidneys or hypertension. Many, many of the low-thiamine symptoms you have mentioned on your channel, so am going to try benfotiamine, as have already tried regular high-dose thiamine, which was instant cure for arrhythmias.

Chech his video on "Can keto & Carnivore diet fix Thiamine deficiency" . Talks about symptoms of Thiamine, including unexplained chronic low blood pressure( its me all my life ).Low blood pressure, up down blood sugar(IR) , very high activity level(ADHD - stuck on sympathetic brain activity, adrenaline seeker, unable to relaxation and self comfort (life was very exhausting mental and physically). The only way to shut off everything was to drop exhausted from physical activities, just to wake up with no signs of mental rejuvenation(all experiences heavily weighted, pilled up in my mind). I am very athletic, very productive, looked for help everywhere, and the doctors always told me that i was very healthy on all my exams and tests. But i knew something was off in my inability to relax and self soothing. That's when i started researching everything on my own, even having no basis on medical education at all. I had no choice. I did not want Adhd or depression meds, because it felt just like a band aid that could cause other main issues. I was looking for help to cure my issues not for more problems to add to my already challenging ones. This young men is amazing on his profound but simple explanations. 😊

Excellent discussion, gentlemen. My theory on the initial bad symptoms in ramping up the B1, from my personal anecdote and opinion, is that when coming off of the Cori cycle dominance, lots of lactic acid gets freed up in the liver and other tissues causing an elevated metabolic acidosis that needs to be flushed out. I personally had high urine pH for awhile and took a half teaspoon of baking soda 2x a day away from meals and felt much better until my pH returned to normal.

Excellent. Thank you. OAT indicated I needed all the Bs, especially B12, but even after getting it up, I still had some fatigue and “bad breathing”, which I’d had for awhile (like over 15 years). Air hunger. Very tiring. I did take a bit of extra thiamine, outside the B-complex, but when I learned about high-dose thiamine for CFS, I decided to give it a go. Lo-and-behold I had better breathing than I’d had in years. I still have energy issues, though. As for the other Bs, riboflavin made me feel exhausted (maybe this is like liver making someone tired?), and niacin gave me scary ocular symptoms. It’s one giant puzzle, trying to figure it all out. I’m up to 900 mg twice a day of both benfotiamine and sulbutiamine. I wonder if I should try higher still (remaining fatigue).....

Othromelcular! Yeah! Thank you for bringing this into the discussion. I have had great success with this approach and applaud Abram Hoffer and Pauling. The argument for what is natural and what is not is well done 👍🏼 I SO agree about the “tipping point” or “point of no return”. The scenario I witnessed was prior 7 years of Veganism. (Severe deficiencies) followed by abuse of high potency marijuana ( probably for self medicating) that became the trigger to push the person right over the deg into severe schizophrenia paranoid delusional disorder. Veganism and weed: a very bad combo. On the up side. So glad I discovered orthomolecular, because High dose Niacin saved them. Is there any correlation. Between those who were doing extreme vegan for many years who had worse diarrhea when switching to Carnivore? Perhaps their enzymes have been wrecked by anti nutrients and Enzyme inhibitors?

Going from vegan to Carnivore is a shock to the microbiome, since it involves two completely different microbiome for digestion. Yup, haha, echoing the 2nd comment above. I would clarify by calling B1 as significant as D INSIDE the body. D is a hormone and must be synthesized from sun exposure to midday UVB sunlight. It’s stored in fat cells so if youreta northerner, load up in summer and spend the winter in delicious restful sleep since melatonin takes over the same docking station. It’s all super fascinating and exciting that humans are learning more about how we function and how interconnected with our environment we are. Look into quantum biology for the circadian rhythm piece.

@stefanweilhartner4415

additionally, magnesium is a cofactor in the krebs cycle, maybe also directly involved with B1. B1 needed for taking up magnesium? and on the other side taking high doses of D3 that needs magnesium to convert into 25 hydroxy vitamin D and depletes magnesium which makes you tired. so, maybe taking magnesium + B1 is a good idea

If you dig into whole foods, potato, meat, fruit, vegetables. Their nutrient matrix is perfectly set up for the body to utilize it seems. Even cooking to a degree alters that matrix. Potatoes have high carbs but simultaneously more thiamine, manganese, potassium, etc all necessary to handle sugar. Our processing system and fortification methods are killing us because of whatever we're exchanging. You probably strip food of a lot of unknown helpful compounds doing this.

in diabetics type 2 there is also the problem with the fatty liver that is overproducing glucose. but of course, if B1 can be optimized and together with low carb then blood sugar levels should get down which also lets insulin get down and then increases fat burning which resolves fatty liver

@@pragavirtual over consumption plays a role but is not the cause. there are many people who consume huge amount of carbs while not getting diabetes type2. at the end, it is the sum of carb consumption and gluconeogenesis in the liver. a lack of GPL-1 can be seen as cause of excess gluconeogenesis. but there is of course a cause for the lack of GLP-1.
