Radio Personality
Keil Lamont is no stranger to Detroit’s airwaves. He enjoys an extensively rich and varied radio broadcasting career, working on air in nearly every conceivable radio format, including Classic Hits, News, News/Talk, CHR, Urban, Urban Adult, Jazz and more.
Keil started his radio career while yet a sophomore in high school, landing a job at WCAR News Radio 1130 AM and CAR-92, WCAR-FM. As a high school senior, he joined urban outlet WGPR-FM and later moved to WLBS-FM. Through the years, Keil’s radio path has taken him to WDRQ, WKSG, WJZZ, WJLB, and WMXD. Keil hosted the “Quiet Storm” on three separate Detroit radio stations through the 80’s and 90’s, taking each station to #1 in the key Adult 25-54 demographic.
“I am extremely excited to be part of the WJZDRadio team,” says Keil. “We have the opportunity to showcase Detroit radio’s unique style to a worldwide audience.” You can hear Keil Lamont on WJZDRadio weekdays from 2PM - 6PM Eastern Time.Keil Lamont was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
As you will see from his personal interview, he had many challenges prior to being on the airwaves which had a lot to do with his upbringing as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He recalls having an interest in radio as early as 12 years old. However, he was told by the Elders that this was not a worthwhile pursuit and went on to state this his was mostly associated with worldly behavior.
Fortunately, Keil had other plans for his future other than service the Watchtower, Bible & Tract Society full time. He continued pursuing his goals as you can see from his accomplishments in life.

Exactly because I didn’t, I was born and raised in this cult. I got baptized at 18, I went to college, traveled to England with my non Jehovah witness friends, did what I want basically. I wasn’t living a double life because I never advanced in the organization, I just got baptized. My only issue is not having my relatives in my life, it still is extremely hard to deal with

You know whats amazing… that you can go up to just about any JW and confront them regarding this and ask them why and they will look at you like you are the one who is crazy and say something like, “Oh… We would neeeeever do something like that”. All the while they are saying this they have that lost glazed over look in their eyes. You’ve all seen it, of that I am certain. Total denial. Trippy stuff.

After listening to this I can't believe the amount of bullsh*t and mind control we had to go through as JW's. We became like little children who have to ask mommy or daddy if we can do something, or if this or that is allowed. We had to strictly follow the rules, as told to us by the Elders and the organization. It reminds me of all the rules the Pharisees had and the heavy burdens they put on the people. We were conditioned like Pavlov's dogs.

And if you ever moved, you had to learn the new flavor of your new congregation, because they were all a little different. Some allowed things, when others wouldn’t. Totally random things. Like, I got called into the back room and was counseled because I was wearing boots at a meeting in my new congregation in SD. Boots, in a SD WINTER were forbidden there! Nowhere else, but there. I was a pioneer, moved there at age 18, to serve on the reservations. So it’s not like I was a rebel kid, or anything. But I deserved being hauled back into the elders’ room for my footwear. My mom was mad, and mailed me some shoes. They arrived at the post office, where we all picked up our mail while we were out in service, and I happened to be in the car group with the same elder who led the counseling, and I opened the package, and I said, “Oh nice! Now I have shoes, since my mom heard I’m not allowed to wear my boots!” But he probably didn’t get the point that he made my mom mad, for picking on me.

That being said....Good to cautious when Hearing ONE version of what supposedly Occurred...

I got to a point where I hated the field ministry so much that I went 3-4 months without going out but still put 20 hours on my time sheet. No one ever asked me about it either. I was also told that because I was divorced unscripturally(ex wife filed the papers), I couldn’t qualify for any special privileges. I thought, “How can I not be considered an exemplary Christian because someone else violated bible principles?” After that I met the woman who became my second wife, then told an elder that I wanted nothing else to do with the borg. Blocked all JW’s numbers in my phone and haven’t looked back. I found out later that my best friend in the borg left as well which was a nice surprise because I thought I lost all my friends cuz all my friends were in the organization.

I studied with the Jehovah's Witnesses but was never baptized. My brother was baptized and then disfellowshipped. The way he was treated went beyond cruel! Most of my family here in Pennsylvania are witnesses. I had an experience a few years ago. My aunt and I were at a local Walmart where we ran into a cousin who was a Jehovah's Witness. He conversed with my aunt, but had no words for me, and was quite rude. My aunt excused herself from talking to him and reminded me that I was not a Jehovah's Witness, so that is why he was not speaking to me. My aunt loved her family, and did not treat us like we were outcasts, even those who were not Witnesses. She would call me and say, "I am just calling you to say I love you." I can only imagine how devastating it must be for someone who has spent most of, if not their entire life in that religion to be shunned or ignored. I did not spend a large percentage of my life even studying, but I must say that my feelings were hurt. I thought, oh, okay. Then, I looked at this man and said to myself well, hell, you ain't even cute, and you want to act ugly too? I turned my back to him and kept shopping. I saw this same cousin at a family member's funeral a couple months later. I acted as if he did not exist. My behavior toward him was driving him crazy. He went out of his way to get me to acknowledge him, but I refused. I could not help but begin to think, what is wrong with you? This is not about God. To me, these people have been completely indoctrinated by a bunch of narcissistic psychopaths. I am not a mental health professional, but I hope anyone who has decided to leave this cult will reach out and get help, specifically centered around trauma.

Thank you Keil for sharing your story, I feel your pain in regards to your mother. I stopped attending meetings in 2019 and my mother immediately stopped talking to me, in 2021 she got diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and she still refused to see me or talk to me unless I would go back to the meetings. She died after 7 weeks, she wouldn’t even talk to me on the phone. I wasn’t disfellowshipped or disassociated but she said she was afraid she wouldn’t get resurrected if she talked to me, that Jehovah would view it as being disloyal. That religion can make people do unbelievable things.

OMG!!!! DETROIT IS IN DA HOUSE!!!! I was a Teen Reporter for WJLB in the 80's. I did it on the down low though. My parents didn't know I was getting on the bus from school and head down to OZ...The Penobscott Building. That's where I met Mojo. I would stay late as I could on Fridays just to hang out with him for an hour or two. I knew at that age I wanted to be on the radio. But my dreams were squashed by the organization. It is only now since I left the JWs that I have met half my goals in higher education, really pushed forward as a journalist, and I started a podcast. Two podcasts. My goal is to get on the air. NPR or community radio. I have listened to Keil Lamont for years. Especially 92.3 FM. I live in Florida now. But Keil's voice is a regular fixture in the D. It's always encouraging and inspirational to come to know the story of JW kids who decided to live in their purpose. I am very appreciative and inspired. This interview really spoke to me.

I always wanted to be a witness, always thought this is what I'm going to end up becoming baptised as. A JW. But, after moving Norway - from UK - and after my uni education ended, I made a strong effort to begin association with JWs here in Norway, I was hoping I could study a bit and become baptised in a few months. I'd known about the so-called ''truth'' since I was a teen, got family members who are JWs, so by that time after moving to Norway to study\live I was pretty acquainted with the organisation, and versed in Scripture, with daily reading still a part of my life. I need Scripture in my life. But, after making 3 efforts to begin Bible studies here in Norway, I didn't like the way I was treated in those 3 attempts at contact. I felt insulted from the very first instance, and the other 2 attempts to reach out at other congregations went pretty much the same way. Which was strange, I was not even a baptised witness, but just some guy knocking on kingdom-halls' doors with a strong and sincere interest in the word of God and baptism. First, I was interested in getting my hands on a large Bible, due to weakened eyes after years of study, and Bible studies, meeting attendance, and Baptism. Simple. But they seemed incredibly suspicious of me, and in their baseless suspicion they insulted me by their careless judgemental words towards me. EG, the first kingdom-hall I tried in order to get started some Bible studies and baptism, I met for a chat with an elder and a circuit overseer who happened to be in town. After hours of talking about the word of God, Christ, the message of salvation, the world... it would have been so obvious to these guys that this was a man who knew the Scriptures and understood its theme and wanted to study; but after all of that, they proceeded to ask me for a telephone number for someone in the UK to PROVE THAT I AM WHO I SAID I AM 😲 But, I didn't say I was anyone special... I just dropped in for a chat because I would like Bible studies and meeting attendance and baptism. What's the problem? I replied politely, like wow, this is quite insulting, do you realise this? I'm just a guy who's interested in picking up a Bible, starting some Bible studies, attending meetings and baptism. We'd been talking for so many hours and so to ask me this question was pretty disturbing. I proceeded to ask, if I were a man from eg the north of Norway, and I approached you for Bible studies on the streets - would you ask me for contacts details for someone in the north of Norway to PROVE THAT I AM WHO I SAID I AM? This is not your job as witnesses. I proceeded to leave and told them to forget that I dropped in. The 2nd congregation I tried went pretty much the same way: I dropped in - still hopeful and interested - but there was a Sunday meeting in progress, so I left my number as requested with an elder serving at the door who hurried me out. Three weeks later, no one called. So I took a drive to the kingdom-hall. Still eager:)) There I met the same elder. It's as if it was meant to happen. So I said it's been 3+ weeks, no one called. The elder replied, I ran a check on that number you gave me and that number does not belong to you 😲😲 so I didn't call. *But what about the word of God?* Is this being a man of God???? I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I thought to myself *SO WHAT* if the number I gave you to contact me about spiritual things is mine (or my sister's, eg)? Is this man the police? The thing is my number is ex-directory, it doesn't show up because it is set to through my service provider. So it was obvious to me this elder was lying. And his attitude was bad. At that point I began to tell myself that something is preventing me from entering this organisation, felt like my way was being blocked somehow. I simply told him you are a poor ambassador for God and politely left. Remember: all I wanted was to begin Bible studies, establish meeting attendance, and work towards baptism. But instead, from that point I began to question more and more about the organisation and to view various vids on RU-vid, like this channel eg, and came to the conclusion that I am not supposed to be a part of this and gradually stopped seeking to be a JW.

Interesting I was just thinking that today. No matter what people say I have the right to call God Jehovah and Jesus Yeshua or Jesus I have the right to have his Holy Spirit and no organization is needed to fill my love for the God I have known all my life just like any other Gods people believe in it their right to use. It my proaugtive no not be in an organization for those Witnesses who think they serving Jehovah. I can serve him the way he leads me to and no Witnesses can stop me. My point you can believe in Jehovah and not an organization that has the name on it.
