Rod's busy mending his bicycle, but the Pink Windmill Kids are intent on spending the day making kites. Grotbags and Croc, meanwhile, are of course keen to terrorise the lot of them from the safety of the Grotmobile. I believe this episode was originally broadcast on Wednesday, 10th November, 1982, and it features the songs Happy Talk (from the musical South Pacific, but a then-recent hit for Captain Sensible) and Let's Go Fly a Kite (from the film Mary Poppins).
The educational side of this era's Emu's World pops up again in this one, this time in the shape of a few of the Kids demonstrating their foreign language skills, plus a little talk about kites and their history. On that subject, by all accounts it was nigh on impossible to get the Kids to actually dance to that second song as they were far more preoccupied with playing around! Never mind - it all adds to the fun, and what a fun episode it is, despite Grotbags not really having any sort of ingenious plan other than to make a nuisance of herself. I also enjoyed the opening skit with just Rod and Emu being silly, and the foam magically appearing out of nowhere without the aid of special effects.
On a technical note, there are some outdoor pyrotechnics in this episode as Grotbags takes pot shots at the Kids running through a field - I'm trying to think of another example of when they did this, but I can't. Also, at around 6:23, there's a weird slow-motion shot inserted (presumably) over an edit in the middle of Francesca's bit. It's a real testament to how television used to be made back then: studio scenes were assembled on-the-fly, with only the footage selected at the time being recorded on a single tape. Nowadays, they'd record the direct feed from every camera as well as making a live edit as they went, and patch up anything iffy later; in 1982, if you hadn't got every shot you needed in that session, you had to pretty much make do with what you did get and use your own resourcefulness.
Many thanks to Jayne for lending me this tape.

Ah the infamous "Let's Go Fly a Kite" sequence where nearly all of us forgot to sing during filming because we were having too much fun flying kites - and got right royal roasting from Alan Harding - hence the wide shots - haha!!!!

By the way, I hope you all enjoyed running through that field of landmines around 4:40. No-one can say the Pink Windmill Kids weren't willing to suffer for their art!

Producer: “shouldn’t we have croc mic’ed up?, he’s a bit muffled” Sound: “no can do boss. No where to clip it” Produce : “can we at least dub in his lines like series 1?” Director : “if we do that what’s the point of having the actor in the costume” Producer : “what’s the point indeed….”

Could someone please tell me which kids are are Julie Wright, Natali Williams and Debbie-Anne Greenwell? I found their names in Wikipedia in the list of Pink Windmill Kid cast. I would like to make a compilation with Hungarian music for 1982-1983. Thank You in advance for the answer!

Natali and Julie are both at 17:51: Julie is the tall blonde girl in the red/blue feather patterned dress and Natali is sending her kite up in the air. Debbie-Anne has really long blonde hair and wears a white top and blue skirt. She’s with Aaron Burchell at 8:31. Natali, Julie, and Debbie-Anne are in series 2 only. There is also a girl called Adele Graham who isn’t in the Wikipedia yet: she has blond hair in a ponytail and wears pink shorts, and is in series 2 and 3.

I wasn't sure if I was imagining this episode! I swear, the shot with the kids running in the landmines has been a distinct image ingrained in my head, yet I wasn't sure if it was just some silly dream or if it was from an actual episode. That is definitely an unforgettable aspect to this particular series. This was once again another strong episode, with a plot that moves along quite nicely, with every scene being connected to one another and not jumping around from idea to idea (though I do think this is probably the earliest point in any episode that Grotbags comes to the Pink Windmill at the top of my head). We're already halfway through, and based on the first three episodes, this is arguably one of the most cohesive series yet! :-) Here's an unrelated question, this one might be a bit of a stretch - with the recent discovery of the remaining 1984-1986 episodes, were you able to find the missing/incomplete 1987/1988 episodes (Teamwork/Hip to be Square, Octopus's Garden/Tomorrow, Shakedown, Working in the Coal Mine), or are we still on the lookout for them?

Glad you're still enjoying them! Good point about this being the first time Grotbags makes it to the Pink Windmill this series - presumably she must have done in the first series, too, but not in that single episode we've found. Or maybe not...? Besides that first series, I'm afraid we're still currently missing: - The 1984 live episode that didn't happen - One full episode from 1985, and another we've only got part of - Those two partial Emu's Wide World episodes - Those two 1988 episodes And that's it - only seven Corona episodes still outstanding, along with another five from series one. We're within touching distance of the complete set! :-)
