Great video. I remember getting my first pipe, a GBD, when I graduated high school. Paid close to one hundred dollars. Work has a box boy. Put the pipe on a layaway plan for twenty dollars a week. I still have it to this day, fifty years later.

Good job well done Sir, The lightness of the colour sits really comfortably with the lightness of such a beautiful delicate little pipe. Lovely job. Thank you for sharing.

I really like the faint yellow hue it gives, almost like a candied amber look. Sharp pipe!

You did an outstanding job restoring this pipe. I wouldn't change a thing. The staining you did really brings out the depth and beauty of the grain. Keep up the good work!

I think it works quite well. Beautiful grain on that pipe. You must have an amazing pipe collection. I think we all would enjoy seeing them. Thanks for the lesson. The steam with the iron is extremely clever. I must try. Cheers!

John Ferguson Thank you. Actually most of them end up back in somebody else’s hands either as gifts or resold to pay for the hobby.

I've been playing with yellow on some pipes I'm restoring. Your insight and experience is very much appreciated. I agree with a previous comment from John, it would be really great to see a "My Personal Collection" video. Or at least a "My Favorite Pipes from my Personal Collection" video (If you're like me and have some pipes you like to smoke but wouldn't want to show the world. lol).

Tim Mitchell thank you. I love discovering info about the pipes I am working on. Suddenly it turns from just another pipe into something particular.

In your video @5.39 you are using a clear liquid to wet the pipe before applying the stain? Is that alcohol, or something else? Thank you sincerely for all your posts they are wonderful
@jeffthechefpiper8227
@jeffthechefpiper8227 6 лет назад
I like the color, nice contrast really shows the grain. Have you tried Fiebings saddle tan? Seems to me the color you were working towards with the yellow and brown would be saddle tan maybe, a little lighter with the alcohol.

Jeffrey Greenberg I have not seen that particular color at my local leather store, but now that you have made me aware I am going to keep an eye out for it. Thank you!

Thanks for the video. Couple of questions. How long after the steaming did you wait before sanding , and what grade paper did you use? Thanks. Getting ready to try restoring a pipe.
@BarePipe
@BarePipe 5 лет назад
Jim Miller Great questions. I normally let it sit at room temperature and humidity for a day before I sand it. For sanding grades it depends a bit on how much you still need to sand out. If it needs a bit more work then I start with 300 and work my way up the grades from there, if it is just a finishing sanding I start at 600, I usually don’t go past 1500 before staining, because once you start to get a glossy finish the stain tends to not penetrate as well. After staining I take it up to 6000 before I buff it.

A bit late with my question, but here goes: how hot do you set the iron? I’ve got several briars that need the “dent fix” treatment. Thanks!
