The EV Revolution Show - Special Episode
Thanks to VinFast Canada for inviting me down for their first customer drive event in Canada! They are opening their first store in Canada, at the Yorkdale Mall location in Toronto, Ontario on November 15, 2022. They are also providing some short test drives and I got an early look at the setup as well as some seat time (very short)!
I also got a great opportunity to explore the VF8 in more detail!
As always, I welcome any feedback and questions! Thanks for Watching!

Thanks for watching. Yes it is and that is what I am trying to get across. Don't shy away from this because it is a new car player here in North America. Remember, Tesla is not that old either and Vinfast has been building vehicles for about 9-10 years already in home country and they are part of a multi-billion dollar conglomerate group of companies so are very stable financially. This means they have the time and money to invest in manufacturing, technologies, economies of scale, etc, in order to bring very good products to market in this very competitive space. Time will tell but so far, so good.

Thanks for watching and appreciate the question. Post sales support will be done by a regional network of authorized service centres as well as a mobile service force. Some test drivers say Vinfast has a BMW feel to it. Can you please confirm? Thanks
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution Год назад
Thanks for watching. I would say in my very short time with it, it has a premium feel and look. I really can't comment on the driving part since my taste was just a couple of minutes in a parking lot. However, I fully believe that these will perform very well in all driving conditions. They won't be race cars nor do they need to be, however with 0-60's in the 5.5 to. 6 second range, that is plenty fast enough for all driving use cases. The jury is still out as far as a direct comparison to BMW goes, as we will have to see how they drive and how they last in the field over time. Probably after a good year under belt, I would have a solid idea and be able to answer that question.

This electric Vinfast VF8 looks almost exactly the same as the combustion engine Vinfast Lux. They sold about 9 thousand copies, most were sold at fire-sale price to get rid of them before the whole plant was shuttered last year. The electric version took over the plant and production restarted. Gas engines are now replaced with electric ones but the skin is essentially the same. Let see if the Vietnamese like the electric better, more importantly whether the Americans like Vinfast cars. Anyone remembers the Hyundai Pony? It took Hyundai 45 years to get from the Pony to the Genesis today. Vinfast likes to do it in one scoop.
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution Год назад
Thanks for watching. I understand this transition and glad they are all-in for EVs. We will see but it won't take them 45 years to build a success story globally. To me, even if they sell 100k vehicles a year, that would be good. I know the plant has scale to 500,000 yearly vehicle production targets, with more expansion. I agree the proof will be in the overall quality, performance of the battery system and after-sales support. Remember, the technology to build a vehicle is so much more advanced than the days of the Pony, so it's not a fair comparison at all. VF is using a high-degree of automation as well as a state-of-the-art plant and manufacturing processes. I expect good things from them.
@saigonaisnhatrang762
@saigonaisnhatrang762 Год назад
@@EVRevolution 100k annually? Only in your wildest dreams. I fear that the 999 being shipped to LA will sell 20 to local Vietnamese, who are Vinfast's baits, and the rest will weather the heat of California and then to scrapyard. Your heard from me first!
@saigonaisnhatrang762
@saigonaisnhatrang762 Год назад
PS: Hyundai builds rockets, ships, satellites, tanks, airplanes, oil rigs, a full range of high-tech everything. Can you tell me ONE thing Vinfast designs and builds? Not even a screw. I know they bough great stamping machines to stamp and paint panels in Haiphong but everything else is shipped in and assembled. That's the extent of their technology know-how.

@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution Год назад
@saigonaisnhatrang762 They've been building vehicles for a number of years now, but they are a young car manufacturer, no doubt. The good thing is they have a state of the art plant and deep pockets, being part of the VinFast Group. Which does Medical, Real Estate, Education and other markets. Again, let's see what happens but I am fully confident they will sell tens of thousands, and more.

$259/month for battery subscription or $10,000 to buy the battery. $259/month is $10,000 in 3 years 2 months. I would certainly expect the battery to last well beyond 3 years. It should last 10 plus years. The "Comprehensive" Warranty on the car is 10 years, 200,000km, which I assume would include the battery. Can anyone confirm? If the 10 year warranty includes the battery, why would anyone use the subscription model.
@AnhNguyen-ym4or
@AnhNguyen-ym4or Год назад
I agreed that it's a bit pricey compared to Chinese cars but Vinfast suppliers are top tier in the world: Germany (Bosch, ZF, Infineon), USA (Lear, Amazon), South Korea (Namyang, LG Chem, Skiet, Posco), France (Faurecia), Thailand (Aapico), China (CALT, Gotion), Israel (StoreDot, Karamba Security). It's hard to reduce the price if you use quality parts to build the car.

@Domenic DeFrancesco Thanks for watching and for the info. Yes, I believe the Battery Pack is covered under that 10-Year Warranty. If not, 8 years for sure as that is industry norm. Prob to between 65%-70% degradation over that time. That too seems to be the norm. So based on your math, for sure it makes better sense to buy the battery up front. However, I believe the subscription provides some additional benefits beyond just lowering the upfront and payment costs. Some Office integration stuff and I think some add ADAS items. You will need to check out their website for all info.

The red one you showed us must be an early pre production model. The ones that have been delivered have the frunk. I do wish Vinfast provided a rear seat release lever behind the backrest so that you don't have to flip down the rear seat from the side, then go to the rear to put things in. It would be more convenient, if you can open the rear hatch, pull the lever and the rear seat fold down.

I don't know how many Vinfast VF8s are earmarked for the Toronto market but I suspect that you needn't worry about not finding one to tickle your fancy. There are lots of wealthy people in Toronto, who can well afford just about anything, from a million-dollar Roll Royce to a hundred-thousand-dollar Vinfast VF8 (a VF8 is priced at 65,000 USD, add the taxes, foreign exchange and destination charges the total would come to about 100K Cdn dollars). As I see it, Canadian wealthy people are very smart (that's why they are wealthy!). They wouldn't blink an eye to spend a hundred grands for a Tesla, a Porches or a Lexus but, you'd bet, never for an unknown quantity like a Vinfast. Hence, I am seriously concerned that Vinfast will have a tough time peddling this Vinfast thing in Toronto.

You can start praying that the car will not bring you any trouble. Plenty of Vietnamese consumers have already experienced unpleasant surprises from Vinfast's petrol cars. When it got too hot, it burst into flames and the poor driver got stuck inside and turned into charcoal.

Only issue is Electric cars isn't cheap enough for most americans
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution Год назад
Thanks for watching. While it is true that if you only look at the upfront sticker price, EVs are more expensive than a comparable ICEV. However, if you look at the Total Costs to Operate (TCO) over the lifetime of your use, you will see they are dramatically cheaper to "fuel" and maintain. The average ROI for the additional costs you pay up front, are recouped in about 3-4 years of ownership, or even less time. I encourage you to do the math and do your research. If you need any help, send me an email to EVRevolutionShow@gmail.com.

@@EVRevolution Are you sure? Rich rebuilds had a video that showed he paid $70 just to fuel his rivian. Even my 4.7 dodge ram doesn't take that much in fuel.... I want to cross over to electric but it doesn't seem like the infrastructure is their yet
@EVRevolution
@EVRevolution Год назад
Yes I am sure. Costing can be relative of course and if you are filling up your Dodge which has a 26 gallon tank, for less than $70, then you are paying less than $3 per gallon. I find that very lucky, since the average cost of gas in the U.S. currently is about $3.67 per gallon. For that Rivian figure, that could have been a DC Fast Charge for a road trip. I can tell you that here in Ontario, to fully charge a Rivian R1T with the largest pack, 181kWh, would cost me about $16 Canadian. Yes, you read that right....that is it. That's about $11 USD. $11 USD!!!!!!!!! Even looking at the energy rate in California, which is one of the highest costs in the U.S., at $0.28 cents USD, that Rivian charge at home would then cost about $50 USD. That is still about 29% cheaper than petrol/gasoline. Plus, the vehicle is not polluting any GHG's while in operating, like your stinky and terrible 4.7 Dodge is doing. So, where you get off saying EVs are not cheap enough in TCO, well you are not doing your homework. One has to look at costing where they live (home, DC, L2, etc.) to do a fair comparison. You keep smoking what you are smoking.

@@EVRevolution Hoovies garage just got rid of his ford lightning because of battery degradation, you may believe it's cheaper to actually own a electric car till you actually add up how expensive it, 1st your electric bill will be higher, also your car insurance premium will be higher. I'm a car enthusiast, I'm employed by multiple companies were I evaluate car values. I also work on cars in my spare time. (Including Tesla's). Also I live in a state with much cheaper gas prices you just magically googled. Maybe if you get out and travel more in the world, you would see there is no actual infrastructure for electric cars for awhile.

Thanks for watching. The VF7 and/or VF6 will be lower priced when they come out. 70% battery warranty is the industry average. Their build quality is premium, with materials use, so we will see if it is worth it. Service network, they will have in place some fixed depots as well as mobile network in the areas they initially launch, with more coverages as they expand.

@dattran6962 Thanks for the links and this is very unfortunate. We will see how VF stands behind their product with this consumer. All OEMs go thru problems, albeit this person has some serious issues. If I were him, I would look to get them to fix it or replace the vehicle with a new one. In the US and Canada, we have "lemon-aid" laws to protect consumers. One person's lemon does not mean they are all like that, however it is worth to watch this scenario and see how many others, if more, are affected.

The thing about EVs is that they're just a big battery on an electric motor and barely a transmission to speak of. Much much simpler than a gas car and about 1/20 the moving parts. That's why non-industrialists and new economy types can begin a new EV car company, from the likes of cell phone companies, computer companies, etc., where in the past you strictly needed to come from experience with internal combustion engines of some sort. So look forward to lots of boutique car companies out of nowhere. Its already happened in China with some 80 car companies springing up out of nowhere.
