Fr tho. You pay for the mockups cause most artists take time to draw the design for you. Its to ensure you have more of a say on what you like and dont like. I dont think id want to pay someone for an AI made mockup. Id pay someone who takes their craft seriously and the artistry is coming from them.

If the artist is fairly compensated for multiple designs & mockups then sure, AI doesn't need to be a part of the process. The concepts for Ethan were ridiculous and he is right to get a refund too. There is a reason that artists would use AI at this stage, however, and I understand it completely as someone in an adjacent industry. It's totally fair to use AI with a new client (ideally well-edited and it being discussed prior) before sending through proper concepts once an agreed-upon style and expectations are mutual. It's not about being lazy or lacking the skill to do the actual tattoo - it's about protecting themselves and getting proper compensation for their labor. At the end of the day, AI in this context can save artists being ripped off. It's extremely common that artists don't get compensated for all of the work that they do. The reality is, a massive amount of people take advantage of and don't value the time and effort it takes for a tattoo artist to do initial designs and concepts. Some people will expect detailed, amazing and time-consuming designs (that are EXACTLY what they described), and they will still turn around and refuse to pay for the concepts. I've also heard tattoo artists talk about scumbags getting initial designs, not paying for them/getting a refund and taking the stolen designs to someone cheaper. There are some scummy artists and designers out there, but most people are honest and are just trying to earn a living.

I had to go to like 5 artists before I found one that was down to do my sleeve. Well first my aunt (who’s done a bunch of my tats) started it but she got sick and now she can’t do super big pieces. So then not only did I have to find someone to do it I had to find someone who would agree to work on an existing sleeve. I have different arm bands (something many artist HATE doing) that is basically a timeline of my childhood to becoming a woman. I only 3 of the 15 done when I found my artist. He specializes in geometrical designs and very precise work. He was happy to do it. It looks so sick and everytime I see my arm now I’m so happy. You always want an artist that is stoked to do your idea.

false, if you get a tattoo you should make sure to find the absolute weirdest, sketchiest guy in your area/country, because true art will not be constrained. the artist must be unpredictable or he is no artist at all. get a dick tattooed on your face, cowards

also as a fyi- any tattoo artist worth their salt wont go tattoo you in a podcast studio. When risking infection and blood-borne illness, its always best to go with a clean, responsible shop not focused on insta-fame. Most of those celebrity tattoo artist do tattoos so small and intricate that age horrible and charge people astronomical prices. Find a local shop that caters to the style you want, make sure they show you the finished product so you can ask for any changes before they put it on your body.

@@laterlars but I wouldn’t say a tattoo artist standard is Photoshop. I have a been to almost every shop in my state and that I’ve seen shops that has never use Photoshop and just use an iPad and a drawing app just so you can draw and customize some thing but not use Photoshop that’s new to me especially AI photoshop.

In fact, designers are far more apt to use Illustrator or InDesign, because it’s suited for layouts, where as PS is suited for more suited for Graphic Artists or Photographers. Having said, that you’re absolutely right - I’ve always seen a tattoo artist with an IPad and Procreate or the like. The fact he said Photoshop is odd - for execution would be entirely overkill and clunky. That was a very good detail you pointed out about it being further suspicious.

Several artists will send a sketch prior but they charge for it, which is understandable. Then theyll make changes if necessary and charge for another sketch. Yeah, everytime I've gotten a tattoo, I approved it day of so I dont think its THAT weird that he said they would figure it out. I just think its soooo weird that NONE of the images are what he wanted. Lol.

@@manjuprabhu3393 They're not talking about getting the tattoo for free. Talking about seeing the tattoo before the day of the tattoo. Most artist charge extra if they want them to draw something up before the tattoo. I've never gotten a tattoo where I saw it before the day of the tattoo. You tell them what you want and then day of, they come out with a stencil and you either approve it there or make changes. Artists typically aren't gonna send their artwork for free and sketches are separate from the tattoo. I understand both sides.
