Etho Plays Minecraft - Episode 527: Bass Overload

I'm an audio engineer, have recorded and mixed music for many years, now specialise in post-production. Don't bother with so much EQ, it sounds fine to me. I would however filter out anything below 60Hz. Your settings sacrificed intelligibility and quality. I would compress your voice, and add a small amount of saturation. The reason you sound different when close to the mic is due to 'the proximity effect'. The 't' and 's' sounds are called sibilance and the 'p' and 'b' sounds are called plosives. Pop filters are used to prevent plosives, which is air hitting the microphone diaphragm. For sibilance, you could try to angle the microphone slightly, what is referred to as being 'off-axis'. Otherwise, you could use a type of compressor called a 'de-esser'. Having said that, it sounds fine as it is right now.

Just a heads up pillagers will stop short of a villager to try and shoot them so they won't fall into that trapdoor area.

ethos raw voice is so silky smooth. equalizer is fine, but I think no equalizer is better.

It's all about proximity, invisibility only works if you keep your distance from mobs. If you get right up next to them, they can see you

No equalizer for me, since the equalizer gives the effect of a echoie non-soundproofed room. Also the Bass aspect of your voice adds alot of depth and I think it sounds great.

Arrows will float up the bubble stream and hit the villager, if you line up a skeleton correctly it will fire arrows into a bubble-stream that can be stored as entities

Your voice sounded awesome around the 4:00 mark. Whatever you did around that time, you should continue doing it. I also love the new editing

About 3:00+ is really good! Little away with no equalizer is the good ol' Etho voice. Very smooth. :D 5:34 I really like being able to see how you got there, but (if possible) maybe try putting a little border around the travel video so it doesn't blend in to the main video. they did remove ghost blocks but 1.14 broke a lot of things and they are back again

Ghost blocks happen when you break blocks instantly and move at the same time. If you stay still you can brake all the blocks you want. Then move to a new spot and start braking again.

Hey Etho, It sounds like you need a Cloudlifter (CL-1) to give your AT-2035 Microphone a clean phantom powered boost and you won’t have to crank up your audio interface up to max. This will probably increase quality too. It’s a tiny little box that has an XLR in and output. You connect it between your audio interface and the mic. Hope this helps!

Hey Etho! I have a really fun idea, I don't know if you'll read this but I have been watching your older episodes and saw that once upon a time you talked about making a zoo in the end. The zoo would consist of every mob in the game, which is a really cool idea, but you ended up making the Nexus instead. It would be kinda cool if you tried to make a zoo in the end considering that there isn't too much to see on your End Island. Maybe you could try to make use of the end towers in your build, maybe using them as "cages" for some of the hostile mobs, and then you'll have all the passive mobs wandering around on the island itself.

In this episode, your voice was the best without equalizer. That stuff that danielhackett guy said about EQ, compression and saturation would definitely enhance the quality a small bit. Cutting everything below 60hz with EQ, compressing a bit (1:3 or 1:4 ratio maybe, and threshold down till it compresses 3-6 Db should do), and adding a bit of saturation (5-30% should do, tape saturation is my favourite). Good stuff as always though.

If you don't have one, think about getting a mic with a pop filter to reduce the hard 'p' sounds you get when you are closer to the mic.

I've been watching for years, and there's been no RU-vidr that I'm consistently excited to watch and inspires me to play minecraft again as much as u. I still remember the chocolate island and mindcrack days, It's been a fun journey with many memories. Even if people say minecraft isn't as good as before, you always seem to defy that and prove that it can be fun at anytime. Never change Etho!

15:27 The new FOV is great. For singleplayer and casual playing, 80 is fine. 90 and above would be more for PVP. Ya it will take time getting used to, but it will help you and the viewers (especially some of us who watch in high resolution on big screens) see much more of the surrounding and avoid tunnel vision.

Hey etho, what do you watch on RU-vid while doing things in Minecraft, or in your freetime? Is is just Minecraft videos, or other games, or maybe certain RU-vidrs specifically? Loving the changes and the content.

When I was having low gain problems with my microphone, I missed a spot where you can adjust the gain settings on the computer. OBS has one, the software equalizer you use has one, the hardware converter may have one, and Windows has its own. I missed the Windows one. In Windows 10 right-click the volume icon -> Sound Settings -> Sound Control Panel -> Select your microphone -> Levels. I found increasing the gain a bit on the Windows part to be helpful. If it is set too high though it will pick up everything in the room and will be grainy. Don't use the boost option if it has one. I set the levels to 50 in my case, though it may be different for you. Also, Condenser microphones diaphragm has to be pointed directly at your mouth otherwise it won't pick up as well. A pop filter is good for the puh sounds, and a boom arm/stand will help with any vibrations. Good Luck Etho!

From the first episode I was intrigued by your technical approach to the game, as well as your calming nature and subtle sarcasm. For EQ you should use a high pass filter around 80Hz. I would also recommend taking a look at some multi-band compressers or a de-esser for the higher frequencies.

Etho, if you hold your place block button while destroying blocks, it prevents ghost blocks from occurring. I do it all the time. You could use your place block button where you suspect a ghost block is and it'll appear (doesn't matter whats in your hand). Hope it helps :D

About audio quality, I really like how etho's voice sounds when he "eats the mic" at the beginning.

Etho, the equalizer sounds a lot like your older mic. Try to put a very light, low-order high-pass filter with a low cutoff if you don't want to go too heavy with processing. Or just keep using the EQ if you want your videos to sound the same as your old ones.

Etho, mobs can detect invisible players if they are in close proximity. Also, the mob spawn algorithm starts at the bottom of the world when looking for spawning spaces. Therefore, the preference for the pillagers to spawn in darkness might actually be a bias for spawning lower down.
