Have you accessed an EV incentive? Was it a make-or-break in buying one? If so, did it make it more affordable and on par with a gas or hybrid counterpart you were considering? On a non-ev front, has an incentive ever helped you make a positive change in your life that wouldn't have been possible without it? Let me know in the comments below! I always appreciate the amazing feedback!

Given the last few years Nd the incredible amount of misinformation and manipulation from government and "experts", it's no surprise that people are becoming sceptical of government "incentives". Particularly when they are out of reach for so many people. I don't mind driving any vehicle, but I think if the product is good enough, you shouldn't need to legislate it. If you are legislating it before there is any sort of suitable replacement (or in the case of flat owners, anywhere to charge), then all that you are going to do is foster and grow resentment. Here in Aus you can buy an EV tomorrow, but people are willing to wait 18 months for a diesel version, and in some cases, up to 5 years for some cars. The first round of people are getting rid of their ev and some have bought another, but many are disolutioned by their experience as the product is not actually superior in everyday and they obviously needed what it was deficient at providing. Anyway, that's my 2 pennies worth.

Yes absolutely! If it wasn't for Ford and the government taking off over 17,000 on my vehicle I wouldn't have been able to afford a new car. I've been eagerly awaiting my purchase of a Ford lightning since it came out. And now I'm able to make all those older dreams come true :-) My next purchase will be a RV that I can tow with The expected range of the lightning so that I can have some fun driving around for free staring at God's waiting room :-)

I can't believe I missed this comment. Sorry! Thank you for the great feedback on what is happening in other countries - and a great point on a vehicle being considered on its merit alone, rather than using incentives. This is an important discussion. But as my video addresses, incentives have been as much for fossil industry vehicles and the underlying infrastructure as it has evs - in Canada, well into the hundred-fold range. The #s are different here too: According to CAA, over 97% of people who own evs state that they will - or have already returned - to another one. So, it has a lot to do with the driving environment, I'm guessing. Incentives here in Canada are actually structured for the lower income bracket (those above a certain point don't qualify). But what is stupid is that many of the vehicles they qualify for are too damn expensive for them to own, even with the incentive! I'm curious: what is the adoption rate in Aus? @@AllInVehicleInspections

@truckedupevs The take up is moving, depends on what you call a success. You can buy an EV tomorrow if you want to and 8% have, but I talk to the dealers and they say they struggle to sell them. People tend to be high earners for many of them which excludes most of the population to begin with (incentives are irrelevant it seems). One dealer expressed they could sell me an EV tomorrow but their most popular car which comes in diesel has an 18 month wait, and people are still choosing that option. Another 8%ish of sales is hybrid, with the taxi market clamouring for hybrid Camrys (and government fleets) the wait time is 5 years, and they are still ordering new cars. I would call that a win but the government "new fuel efficiency standards" is set to punish manufacturers and buyers who don't buy an EV. Basically a carbon tax on ICE vehicles, now I may agree with that once all the infrastructure and vehicles are in place and available to make it viable, but if I kept more of the tax I earned, I might be able to afford an EV and it's side affects. Instead of the innafficient government handling the incentive, we could all put the money to companies that have invested in helping solve my problems instead of a government contractor who solves the government's ideology Maybe a long reply, I don't mind EV, I am trained on them, but I do mind massive amounts of my tax spent on an idea that will probably solve itself if it was allowed to mature over a decade or so. We hear how great this is in other countries, but we are not other countries and have our own challenges. Politicians around the world are all trying to implement the same rules, seemingly as part of a club, but can't take resistance when they rules aren't tailored to the country or the businesses and people that live within it. Anyway, rant over, loved the vid, and yes incentives have been around for a long time, many were pointless, like it didn't save Hummer from insolvency, just delayed it.

The rebates for EV’s and solar have done a great job making the technology more accessible. I have 2 EVs and I didn’t qualify for any incentives but they still made economic sense. This probably would not have been the case without the incentives to help make the tech mainstream. Great content, keep it up.

There were three incentives that affected my lightning purchase. The first was a dealer incentive that was passed along. I noticed that some dealers took a cut of this. Mine didn't. I had already made the decision to purchase a lightning and so had been gathering my resources and this incentive changed my timing. I was prepared to wait for a 2024 Flash trim mostly for the heat pump. The second incentive was the tax rebate, which is capped at $80k MSRP, so Ford rejiggered the Lariat to fit under the cap. After Jan 1, 2024 this is applied at the point of sale, but since tax time was a few months away it was an easy call. The first incentive only applied to the Lariat trim but it put that in realm of the XLT I had been eyeing. End of year 2023 was a tough time for Ford and trucks sales generally. Not only were lightnings piling up on dealer lots, the automotive strike had recently been settled and the Cybertruck was barreling toward release. Ford exec's were probably worried back then but since the Tesla network is open they're probably sipping on their third martini. It didn't take much to read the tea leaves blown in the wind. The third, less significant incentive, was another tax rebate on installing home charging infrastructure. Recently looked at my dealer and noticed the 2024 Flash trim lightnings are "In transit". $5k in dealer incentive on the 2023 Lariat. Coincidence? Incentives are time honored mechanisms to get consumers to make choices they might otherwise not make, wielded by governments and companies alike. Naturally there are many other forms of incentives not just financial but vehicles purchases are largely governed by market dynamics which is why modest incentives can have an outsized influence on the fledgling EV market. Great content. Keep on truck'in.

Excellent insight and great breakdown of the buying/incentive process! Yeah, a lot of things have changed in our market as well, and some incentives no longer apply due to the cap being only $70k (Canadian), much lower than the US numbers. It basically puts everything but the Pro out of reach for the foreseeable future, but that might be adjusted by government moving forward. We'll have to see.

Myself I was torn between getting the brand new Ford Rally Mustang Mach e, or finding a camper to tow with my new lightning. When Ford dropped the price by over $17,000 on my vehicle it made it clear.

I think it's great that crazy old coots like yourself are able to step into the modern day as you are! And I hope that when I get 4 years older I'm able to reach the same amount of excitement over the change for progression that is needed! Keep up the great work my friend. I hope that when I'm 56 I will be able to have such energy :-)

All great points that people seem to forget, or don't even want to know or hear about. They just want to complain about incentives on things they don't understand because they don't want to change.

My thing is when people buy new. Depreciation plummets and so that can take its toll on someone's wallet. There are tons of vehicles (some EVs) that are great deals within a person's price range. One just has to do their research and so they don't have to play the incentive game.

If they’ll repeat that old $100k deal with the Silverado EV, I’ll start printing up business cards for my new dessert-tasting business. We don’t make desserts or sell them, but for a price we will drive this $105k Silverado EV to your location and taste them. I mean, they never said the business had to make money, right?

Well i was looking at an f150 lightning, i have commented on your other videos. they gave me some hefty money off, truck was about 50k (from 57k, before tax incentives too) but my payoff on my camaro is 37k they only wanted to give me $32.4k for it, i'd essentially be paying MSRP due to the "negative equity" (despite being under mileage for the lease). compared to some folks situations, that's still a deal but i'd be losing like $5k compared going in without car to trade, and still have room to get more off. So i'll just wait it out as the lease goes on, the pay off will go down and make things more fair. Not in a rush to dip out of a lease either, still a year and 6 months i really just wanted to see where the numbers were and if i could get a deal on 2023s before 2024 is released in august. incentives will drive people to "catch a deal". EV or not, if they gave big incentives for ICE cars people aren't gonna pretend they're being bribed lol. There some powerful dealer incentives back in 2018 when i got my Ram 1500 bighorn. that was a dope truck, and like $33k at the end of the sale back when things weren't ass backwards. The issue is these vehicles can be expensive as you said. I am not paying 80k for a car, EV or not, especially when there are ADDITIONAL expenses to even set up the infrastructure in my home to charge it reasonably. I don't see us phasing out ICE cars in 11 years, maybe 30-40 years. There are going to be a lot of people who can't afford or the infrastructure not in place to properly own one.
@truckedupevs

Wow. All fantastic points, and I think making a move when it makes financial sense is just plain smart! Various government phase-out initiatives are for new passenger vehicle sales anyway, and I agree that it might get pushed back. But like the horse and carriage rig that autos replaced, it took a few decades for the complete switch.
@rxibot
@rxibot 3 месяца назад
Yeah the reason why Ford offered you such a low amount on your Camaro is because it's absolutely worthless compared to what it was when you purchased it. I wrestled with the same situation. Back when I purchased my vehicle it was when the pandemic was happening and all used vehicles were worth more than they are now. So unfortunately I had a high mileage vehicle which meant that it was just going to keep on dropping in price pretty steadily pretty heavily. So I took Ford's low offer and went upside down on my loan even though I know full well that it's about to go down even further come June.

Good video. I like it. I hope you are wrong about the price of the Silverado EV. They are promising a lower price than that 😬😬. Ramcharger is the competition for diesel btw lol. Maybe 😬😬😬😬. I'm not sure how much incentive is appropriate. I mean capitalism is a whole different subject. I'm not a huge fan of large incentives but you are right. We do it all the time. I also hope you are right that soon we won't need incentives. The product will just be better for its given application soon. I hope 😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬

The incentive didn't completely offset the added cost of getting a PHEV, but the amount of gas I've saved since buying it has made up the difference by a long shot. :) Did you get the survey the gov't sent out late last year about whether to continue the incentives? I told them pretty much what you just said - we're not there yet, but give it another couple of years and we'll hit the tipping point where economies of scale take over & EV's will be available at every price point. When that happens, we won't need the incentive any more.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 3 месяца назад
I'm in Canada so I didn't see any survey in the mail where I live, but exactly - a few more years of getting the prices down and we're there. Great point on the fuel savings. Being that I went from ICE trucks to pure EV, I actually make my truck payment almost exclusively off fuel savings! Thank you for supporting the channel, joining in the discussion, and adding great insight!

@@truckedupevs I'm in Ontario, which some say is a world unto its own, but theoretically part of Canada too. ;) The survey came out in November-ish.. That said - i'm definitely not going to buy another ICE (not even a PHEV). By the time my current car dies, I'd be shocked if there wasn't an extensive enough fast charging network to cover even the remotest parts of the country. Only reason we went with a PHEV this time was because we still go into the hinterlands where charging isn't possible
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 3 месяца назад
Ha! Ontario rocks! DEFINITELY part of the great white north ;-) Yeah, that explains it. I believe the survey was Provincial. Good call on the PHEV. Even with our standard range truck, we manage to do a fair amount of back-country logging and mining roads to remote hiking spots, but yeah, range needs to improve for longer stuff, or more remote, strategically placed 'adventure chargers' (or a 'tidy tank' for evs - "Hello, Ford? Is this mic on?") @@taragwendolyn

I have no issue with tax incentives. There is no cash handout. It's a tax cut. They could do similar tax incentives for other things, like buying things built in America, if we want to incentivize that. I'm okay with the caps on EV cost for the reason you mentioned, so at least to some degree, the manufacturers can't just raise their prices by the incentive amount, which is highly counter-productive to the goal. I'm not okay with the salary cap limits. There is no reason we shouldn't incentive everyone, including the rich, to do things that are considered beneficial to America.
@truckedupevs
@truckedupevs 3 месяца назад
All great considerations. I think the salary cap limit is absolutely ridiculous. The last time I checked, rich people burn fossil fuels as readily as everyone else. Sometimes, the bureaucratic side of things forgets to look out the window every once in a while and remind themselves what the goal is. Thanks for the comment!
