Independence Day gets picked apart more than....I don't know, something that gets picked apart a lot. And since Resurgence is out today, what better way to celebrate? It's an amazing film that will stir up your emotions and bring you right back to the mid-90s. The critics weren't completely wrong, but this movie is better than a 61! Here's everything right with Independence Day. Next week blinding cgi fantasy.

Little known fact. Will smith yelling about ‘And what the hell is that smell!?’ was not scripted. The filming location has a pretty bad odor that if I recall is from dead animals (brine shrimp or some such) in the dirt. Walking and especially dragging the chute behind him was surely stirring up a lot of the stench during a hot day. He just got kinda pissed off and added a very human moment to what may have otherwise just been him dragging something along the desert. I love that the director and crew knew a good take when they saw it and put that version in the film. Art changes life and life changes art.

I had read somewhere that the filmmakers said the tech was compatible because our computer technology had been based off the alien computer technology that they recovered from the crashed Roswell ship. I always thought that made sense in movie logic terms.

As a not-American kid, I like this movie very much. It's the very first movie that I loved to watched again and again (until Hot Fuzz arrive. Love that one). It is simple, it is awesome, it is fulfilling. As a kid that didn't know better, Independence Day is an awesome movie. We have a calm president who turned out to be badass, a drunk guy who turned out to be badass, a smart guy that badass in his own way, and a badass pilot who, um, badass. Love the characters here.

I always assumed the virus was compatible because they literally said in the movie that our earth computers are based off the ship that humanity has been studying. Obviously the virus would work, because he essentially used an alien laptop to destroy an alien ship. I don’t understand why people take issue with that plot point, they literally spell it out for us.

This is, was, and will probably remain one of my favorite movies of all time. Yes, it has areas where it strains credulity, but it's so *fun* I don't care. The characters are surprisingly well-developed for a disaster movie, too; unlike many other movies of its kind, I actually remember everyone's name, and care about what happens to them. The soundtrack is phenomenal, and the effects look better than a lot of recent movies. It's too bad Emmerich ditched the practical effects in favor of CGI. When I saw it in the theater, everyone lost their shit when the first ship was brought down -- and even now, after I've watched it I don't know how many times, I've still got the urge to squee.

@JakkFrost1

Will Smith didn't do ID4 because he wanted $50 million to do both planned sequels, and they weren't willing to pay that. Sure, maybe he _wanted_ to do it, but not enough to lower his price tag.

On the computer thing, I always went with "they had access to at least one alien computer in the ship recovered from Roswell and had been studying it for 40 years, so of course they'd have at least the basic understanding of its systems needed to write a compatible program, plus they had long since figured out how to make our computers talk to the alien computers."
@JakkFrost1
@JakkFrost1 7 лет назад
The problem with that argument is that Jeff Goldblum's character didn't have any of that 40 year access, he was an overqualified cable guy who came in at the last minute. The better explanation is that nearly all of current human technology was reverse engineered from that first ship at Roswell, including the computing language used to run it.
@gildedbear5355
@gildedbear5355 8 лет назад
I've always figured that interfacing the technology was so easy because our computer technology got a boost from imitating what we found in crashed scout ships, specifically the one in the movie. Of course, that also gave them a relatively easy to use back door.

This should be a sin, and this is what cinemasins should say, at 6:13 he should say" last time I checked the Israelis never bought a single F\A-18 from the U.S" 😉

The film makers didn't have the budget to get mock ups for different types of aircraft. If memory serves, they only had enough to by about a dozen or so models from a shop. (That's why all the jets are F18's) ID4 was made on a very small budget for the time.

A rather niche nitpick only known by people who frequent defense blogs.

There's still a Soviet Union existing in ID4 so something changed the timeline before aliens attack...

I loved this movie so much. My favorite live is when Jeffy G says, "Again, yes. This time without the oops." or something very close. I did also notice that you did quite a bit of double winning at the end there though.

You know that for anyone that doesn't live in the US this movie is very cheese and unbearably patriotic.

This will always be one of my favorite films. I watch it every year on the Fourth of July, without fail. Something my mom started when I was younger. And even though I've seen it over twenty times, I always jump when the alien jumps out after being cut open. :)

I love this movie, and the Laura Roslin/Battlestar Galactica reference makes me love you. I know it’s not a movie, but will you PLEASE do a win video for the BSG remake? People hate on the ending so much, but I love every minute of it. Also, killer Data emotion chip reference. You seem to nerd out on/love all the same things I do. DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS?

So nice to see this! I love Independence Day! President's speech is the best speech in movie history (20 years later I can still recited it by heart and I didn't even try to memorize it, it just happened). BUT, regarding the hacking scene: I want to give this great movie as much leeway as possible, so I can believe that after many decades people learned to connect our computers to theirs and maybe they could not power up the whole ship, but maybe they could power up separate gadgets and maybe even alien computer. And yes, David was connected to the ship and ship connect to the center where they docked, BUT I cannot believe that even knowing alien computer language David could write a virus to penetrate the MILITARY network and disable it. Just ask yourself if David could hack NSA with laptop and launch the missiles with a virus - and that's easier than hacking alien internet.

Also, yes, I do believe you've defended the indefensible, at least as far as 90s movie-goers are concerned - and we're the only ones who matter, right? ;-

6:35, which speech from miracle, he has a couple great ones. You more than likely mean the locker room one right before the Soviet game, but the one about the name on the front of the jersey being more important than the one on the back is pretty good too.
