I'm the Evil Ted who makes props and costumes. I’ve worked on Star Trek Into Darkness, Walking Dead, Fifth Element and Guyver, among lots of others. I've made pretty much everything out of every material, but foam is my favorite.
I'm here to share my skills and shortcuts, and help you learn how to make foam costumes and props, too.

Ted: For what it's worth, you can also use flexible acrylic paints called "Americana", and "Folk Art". Since you have a Michael's out there on the West Coast, they're available there. The metallics of these acrylic paints are called "Goldens" and they come in 2oz bottles as well as 10oz bottles. I use a foam brush to apply. I do RC aircraft made from 1/4" blue insulation foam or 6mm Depron foam, and spray paints can't be used on these because the propellants eat up the foam, so that's where the brushed-on acrylics come in. If you have an air compressor, and you do, then you can get an inexpensive airbrush kit for around $30 and there you go. I really like your tutorials. You produce some very good stuff!

Thank you SO much for this. For whatever reason. even though I've thought about the costume I'm planning to make a lot, it never crossed my mind to cut the foam out at an angle. I feel a bit stupid, especially since I had been thinking about the edges as much as I have.

Your videos have been an endless source of help for me!!! Quick question: I'm making an axe and wanna get a nice edge and it's a pretty thick bit of foam, the edge I wanna make is more graduated and acute than 45° so do I just adjust the angle at which I hold the blade against my cutting surface? I'm finding it difficult to explain haha I hope this makes sense :)

If you're having trouble cutting it, you can sanding the angle down.

Hello Ted. I would like to thank you for your instructions on creating helmets from foam sheets. I currently use your method for making masks and helmets from paper mache sheets. I did encounter as you mentioned in your video a close mask fit when I made my first helmet. My question to you is how much length do you have to add to your pattern to get a comfortable fit? Is it determined by the thickness of the material? Thank you in advance.

Could you make a simple and cheap tutorial. I don't care what of, I just need one for my cosplay club i am starting in high school in a few weeks. You make amazing tutorials that are very clear and easy to follow and your costumes turn out amazing. I am trying to find a tutorial that can be done in about an hour to an hour and a half(not including painting) and that uses craft foam and hot glue and other stuff that you can easily buy and use for a group. If you can't make one, do you know of any? I was thinking maybe bracers or something similar

Hey Ted. You note about using the clear Plastidip on top of the paint for added flex. I did that on my first go at cosplay (before I watched this) and have peeling issues with it so I figured I shouldn't use it as a top coat. Do you do anything else after your clear plasti or have any suggestions and I thought it might help keep it durable on top but it just keep peeling off and looking terrible. I haven't come across anyone else yet who's done this. Thanks for your time and the vids - helps us newbies out a ton!

I am trying to make a sensei hat out of card board, but I don't know how to make the perfect circular shape. Can you make a tutorial on how to make a circular shape please. Thank you.
@kyokitty1
@kyokitty1 8 лет назад
You just need to cut out a circle with a dart or two in it. I suggest foam instead of cardboard.

On the enlarging segment: On that particular helmet pattern (assuming it's the same from the helmet demo) wouldn't you also need to size up the other pieces (the middle section)? Or am I overthinking the process?
@EvilTedSmith
@EvilTedSmith 9 лет назад
Merry Calliope You only need to do one side. If you do the middle it'll get too big.

Evil Ted Smith Thank you! I knew I was over-thinking things to the point of confusing myself. ^_^;

Ted, I'm about to start a helmet (Guard helmet from skyrim) do you think 10 or 12 mm thickness will do?
@EvilTedSmith
@EvilTedSmith 8 лет назад
10mm Or 1/2 floor mat foam will work.

Evil Ted Smith @ 5:50 or so... Exacto makes a 45* cutter that I use, but it doesn't cut deep enough. I MUST upgrade to a hot knife.
@EvilTedSmith
@EvilTedSmith 10 лет назад
Yes, you need to get a box-cutter knife. That's what I use in the video.

Hello, I have a problem, I buy a pack of foamy Fuxion brand of 10mm thick blue and green, the problem is that every time I cut it with the razor this folds, what is wrong? Is foamy different? I bought new knives and still the foamy folds, what can I do?
@EvilTedSmith
@EvilTedSmith 7 лет назад
The first thing I would say is you need a sharp blade, but you say you have new blades? I have not hear of Foamy Fuxion. Could you send me a link so that I can see it?

Thanks for replying Evil Ted, I realize that it is the same fomi, I was able to achieve perfect cuts last night sharpening my razor with a sandpaper, I do not know if a razor sharpener is needed, thank you anyway, and you do an excellent job, by the way. Which I have subscribed to for a few months, Supporting me on your advice and I will continue to see you from Toluca State of Mexico, good day Ted, continue inspiring me.
