Chavie Weisberger was raised in a Hasidic family - an ultra-orthodox Jewish sect - and “was groomed for the ultimate level of success, which was marriage,” she tells PEOPLE. But after she came out to her family, “all hell broke loose,” says the 35-year-old Brooklyn native who now works at Footsteps, an organization that helps people who want to leave or have left the ultra-Orthodox community. “I lost my job and the support of my family and friends.”

Chavie is altogether lovely and admirable: brave, smart, articulate, determined, persistent. Of course, it is awful that she was forced to choose between her community and her sexual orientation. How appalling, too, that she was separated from her children for so long at the hands of a supposedly secular, reasonable, objective judiciary system. Due to her strength of character and wisdom, I feel certain that she will find fulfillment in her life and provide a wonderful role model for her very fortunate children. Mazel tov, Chavie!

Carol Bloom and why shouldn't the children be awarded to the father so that they could live in the community in which they are born and share in the values of their own extended family
@photobloom
@photobloom 6 лет назад
First, what about joint custody? Second, why should living in their birth community and sharing values with their extended family supercede Chavie's right to raise her children and impart her values to them? Third, what about the children's right and need to have a close relationship with their mother?

Carol Bloom , would you advocate for ANY mother? An alcoholic, a drug abuser, a thief, a murderer?
@photobloom
@photobloom 6 лет назад
Sarah, Since you compare Chavie to thieves and murderers, would you advocate that she be criminally prosecuted and jailed for being a lesbian? Clearly you disapprove, but in fact, the law in NY protects the civil rights of gay people. Sorry (not really).
@sarahlippman7708
@sarahlippman7708 6 лет назад
Carol Bloom , let's start from saying that NY State's law is not "written in stone". People make mistakes, and history is full of those. In certain places the law was to kill elderly parents once they lost their first tooth. Or weak babies. As to the question of prosecution of homosexuals, read the Torah, and you will know the answer. But I know: for those born with imbalanced hormones it is a challenge from Above which they need to meet. Of course, it is a hard one, but hard challenges are given to strong people. Most of "gays" are normal human beings who just follow the trend, misguided by the perverted society. Alas!

This intelligent, articulate, honest lady has made the right decision for herself, and I’m glad she fought for her children. However, it’s not enough to say that children are resilient and adapt easily. Presumably, they still have to straddle two worlds, and I’m guessing that they have problems with people within the Orthodox community who want to influence negatively their relationships with their mother. We must never assume that our children are resilient and are managing; it’s not a child’s responsibility to navigate the world of adults. I can only hope they’re getting a lot of positive support from both of their parents.
@tthinker9897
@tthinker9897 4 года назад
This is the fallout of isolationist religious communities that force gay people to marry. So many people hurt - families feel betrayed, spouses feel betrayed, the gay person feels nearly suicidal and, finally, any children are in the midst of turbulent divorces and ex-spouses using them as pawns to create friction with the other parent. What a tragedy - and completely man-made. I understand how insular Hasidic Jews are, and some Christian communities (often cult-like), but even these groups need to awaken the reality that not everyone is created straight.

You certainly wouldn't have a pro-Orthodox Judaism bent to your argument, would you Orthodox Fox? Because I'm guessing you do. Yes obviously, because I suggested this naive and sheltered AMERICAN woman should have had enough access to health books and "the real world" to recognize her own sexuality, I believe the US should march into other countries to make them live the way we do. Good job on spotting that AND name dropping "white man's burden" like the pretentious college freshman that you are.
@cheesecake134
@cheesecake134 5 лет назад
Would you please elaborate on how modern society is "pretty messed up"? We all have different ideas of what "messed up" looks like and I feel like yours would offer a lot of insight. Because you do see your own personal bias here, right? YES INSULARITY IS HARMFUL. It's not as if this woman, as a mature adult of sound mind, decided wanted to remove herself from modern society. She was born into blindness because her PARENTS and COMMUNITY decided it for her. And that is the very problem. She was not given the choice. That is brainwashing. Full stop. You just don't see it because of your own bias.
@cheesecake134
@cheesecake134 5 лет назад
You seem to be offended that I criticized your religion and not others. This video was about an Orthodox woman, so my comment was about that particular faith. I'm so very sorry I didn't take the time to call other religions and groups of people that similarly isolate their followers. Clearly that's what you really wanted. I can agree with certain aspects of the world being "messed up", but a lot of your reasoning still seems to be biased. And honestly, the fact you hearken back to the 50s as some idyllic, safe landscape tells me you are A)white as fuck and male and B) completely naive and will believe anything your religion has told you. The "good ol' days" NEVER EXISTED and you can stop trying to get back to a magical time that never happened. The 1950s were prime Jim Crow years, and it was made sure that black people weren't allowed to lead a life as nice as whites. And a lot of white people used religion to justify their racism and the laws they enacted. The world was only "safe" if you were white. Also, if you need to see the detrimental effects of brainwashing and insularity, go watch literally any "I escaped a cult" documentary you can find. Read about the women who escaped the FLDS, read about people who have escaped the IBLP/Quiverfull movement. They ALL talk about how stifling, controlling, and insulated they were and how damaged they were after leaving. How they knew very little, often nothing at all, about the outside world and modern society. How they were often lied to about how evil the world really was and how bad outsiders really are. How they knew nothing of sex and relationships before being thrown into marriage and families of their own. There is a wealth of information that you just seem to want to turn a blind eye to. But clearly I'm trying to reason with someone who has been brainwashed by his religion and will continue to be brainwashed by his religion. You're in a cult, bud. I hope you've come to that realization by now.

She is a very articulate, beautiful young woman, but as some wiser people have pointed out, there is almost certainly a lot more to the story. Let's put aside the question of her sexual/romantic preference for the moment, and just consider any young Beis Yaakov/Charedi young woman of 18 letting herself be pushed into a shidduch/arranged marriage, and finding a few years later and more mature, especially after having three young children, that in fact she and her husband don't get along, and even that the antipathy is mutual, that he is not crazy about her any more. So they get divorced, which may be a very sensible solution rather than live another 50 or 60 years of misery and frustration together - assuming that joint therapy didn't help. In such a situation the woman would probably not have lost the children, and at the very least would have had a shared-parenting judgement. As in so many other areas of life, there are supportive parents and non-supportive parents, there are sensible judges and there are idiots. What did impress me was that she seemed to suggest that the Chassidic therapist was actually very accepting and supportive, which is how any good therapist is. Listening, helping the patient work through the problem, and being non-judgemental. If the therapist cannot accept who the patient is or their lifestyle or their behaviour, then refer the patient to someone else who can be empathic.

“Letting herself be pushed” in to this marriage???? You say that like she had a choice. Most of the women in this community lose their children when they leave their husbands, whether they are gay or straight. Even if the woman has lived with years of abuse from the husband. This community has attorneys that know how to beat the system. When these women try to leave they are penniless, uneducated, and usually unemployed (exactly how they are raised to be). They don’t stand a chance against this system. And because of the “status quo” rule the children are almost always given back to the father.

Eltan Prian-Ben Zion: Wow.....Your statement is exemplary of the masogyny prevalent in certain religions and especially prevalent in the Abrahamic faiths. Furthermore, your statement is very assuming and exudes the sort of shallow smugness prevalent among the judgemental and narrow minded faithful who claim some sort of absolutist ideology. What's more; the Abrahamic concoction of the one Deity--'G-D' is a condescending, authoritarian and vindictive universal dictator who exemplifies some of the worse aspects of humanity, being a figure who lures humans to follow him through a sense of fear. I'll even go further to say that the historic Abraham is in my opinion one of the most opportunistic, self serving, manipulative and antagonistic figures in all of human history.

+Alex Charalampidis: I agree with you, but in western societies, any criticism of Judaism is met with derision, suspicion, hostility and accusations of 'anti-semitism.' It's basically socially unacceptable and even contemptible to point out any perceived flaws and incompatibility with western values in regard to Judaism, but any signalling of these same issues in Islam has been fine and substantiated in the west until relatively recently. The same worrisome traits are reinforced and present in contemporary zionist christian faiths such as Mormonism, Fundamental Mormonism, Evangelical Fundamentalism (of the Hillsborough Baptist variety), in addition to other repressive faiths rife with group think and forcible conformity like The Jehovah's Witnesses. Any objective criticism of those faiths is also met accusations of bigotry and religious intolerance etc.

I used to be a religious Jewish kid. My girlfriend told me if I didn’t talk to boys, people would tell me that I am a snob. I like people. Men and women are attractive. I feel like asexual because I don’t think that I ever wanted to get physically intimate with anyone. My friend and I made a joke about this dream that I had about this Iranian man who was really old. She said that I may like people with white hats because it was the ayatollah. I was eleven. I had a boyfriend. We weren’t romantic. After being alive for so long, I realize that I am not jealous and I can take rejection easier than others. I love my asexuality and people in a different way.

I see a lot of people in the comments section being extremely critical of the "arranged marriage;" and suggesting Mayim Bialik play this person in a film. If anyone is interested in how these arrangements ACTUALLY go - this is pretty accurate. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A2QlWFSakaM.html Marriage arrangements are optional, the matchmaker is optional, and usually offered as a paid service. The woman in question is in full control and allowed to say "no."

I went threw similar journey, left the Hasidic ultra orthodox community, and as a result of that I lost custody of my children and lost my business, which was in the community. As I turned to this Non-profit group which Chavie works for called “Footsteps” which is the only major organization to help people who left the community. And they denied any help what so ever. They pick who they wanna help. There is a sort of “selection” mostly they pick like someone who is gay or queer. Footsteps is not there to help everyone who leaves the ultra-Orthodox community. Unfortunately, that’s the truth! Eventually my oldest kids followed my footsteps and left the community as well, they didn't have any friends, only in the community, and they wanted to meet like minded people who left the community I knew chavie personally, I asked her many times for help. She was nice, but kind of never got back to me... Unfortunately that's the truth! I went around to other people who left and a lot of them say they felt the same way!

Unfortunately, this same story is repeated in almost every conservative religious community. If you're straight and fit the mold of the community and their beliefs, it can be a truly wonderful and fulfilling life. But for gay people (round pegs in square holes) these communities try to force us into a life we can't genuinely live without extreme emotional pain and depression. It seems so hard for straight people to comprehend that God's creation is wonderfully varied, and not everyone can fall in love with someone of the opposite gender. I am quite serious when I say that if I were ever forced into bed with a woman (I'm a man) I would not only be in panic mode, I would be physically ill. Conservatives Christians tried to coerce me into a heterosexual relationship, but whenever a female became amorous I would have a sever panic attack; what an injustice to me, and to some wonderful woman, to be in a loveless relationship - we both deserve to know and have real love.

The sad thing about religions is that most failed to produce men that were faithful; kind and who treated women properly. In addition they have been the cause of so many wars and women have suffered so much because of them. The day a religion produces people who are good and stay good because this will only be the way to put an end to wars, violence, economic disparity, exploitation, abuse of all sorts, I will convert. We should only give the Nobel prise to people that have showed through their life that they treated people well whether in the marriage/family circles or in the public space while striving to find ways to alleviate and even put an end to poverty, extreme economic disparities, violence and many other things that are adversely affecting the world. That is the only religion we should also have.
@alk158
@alk158 6 лет назад
The thing is by the way if a man left the community and complained he would likely be treated badly as well and lose the children. It really is beyond Gender and it is sad that people see this in such a Misandrist way. Many of the men in some of these communities are not allowed to work and are controlled even more then the women are.

Your misogyny is really nasty. Actually religious Judaism today is very similar to other organized religious groups. It isn't just women though. Men are not allowed to disagree with the Rabbis either. And some of the idea's in religious Judaism today is about not appreciating the contribution of men some who were not Jewish. Considering turning a light on as "work" when the invention is already completed and all your doing is pushing a switch is a good example of this. They should appreciate inventions like those of Edison not consider it somehow unholy to use technology on the Sabbath even when the act clearly is not "work".
@alk158
@alk158 6 лет назад
I'm just going to two points of your rant which as I said it isn't just women (as your rant shows) who face problems if they disagree with the Rabbis or anything that goes on in their self imposed ghetto. Eiton wrote>Second, normal Jews aren't allowed to disagree with rabbis.< Most Israeli's don't follow everything the Rabbis claim and no Israeli PM agrees with everything the Rabbis say. Menachim Begin didn't and he was the most religious of the Prime Ministers of Israel. >Regarding the Sabbath you wrote. >We are not allowed to do them because they are crafts, < Are you serious!!! Turning on a switch to you is a craft. I don't think it is a craft to push a switch. Maybe making the circuit in the first place is a craft but any idiot can push a light switch. It isn't a craft of any sort and to think it is sends the wrong message of course that somehow you made the invention when of course you didn't.

Eitan Prian-Ben Zion: It's easy for the religiously pious to ignore, deny or be outright blind to unpleasant or disconcerting aspects about the particular faith they adhere to. Your absolutist statement of 'We have never murdered people like Christians and muslims. NEVER" is utterly unconvincing and an easily refutable statement. First off, there was the command given in the Torah by YHWH or Hashem to annihilate the nations of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, the Perizzites and the Hivites (Names used are in the English version of the Bible) without sparing anything in those nations as dictated in the Book of Deuteronomy. I'm sorry, but in my estimation, that is considered Deity sanctioned genocide. What about the murder of Shimon Peres by a radical 'extremist' jew? Of course collectively speaking 'we' as in the Jewish people have not murdered, but there are plenty of instances where Jews have murdered. No different that Christians or Muslims, who as a whole haven't murdered, but where cases and historical examples abound of murders and atrocities being committed by the aforementioned. In any case, according to most historians, Zoroastrianism is the first monotheistic faith recorded in human history and that originated in what today is Iran. In any case, as I see it, Judaism is the root faith of Abrahamic religion, which has wrought more misery and conflict upon humanity than any other sort of ideology except perhaps communism, which was conjured by an ethnic jew and initally carried out and financed in Eastern Europe by influential Jews in positions of governance just like you yourself acknowledged in your statement. Furthermore, the notion that the whole world revolves around your nation or people is a narcissistic, dangerous and delusional view of your own people in relation to the rest of humanity.

Only one in 10 Orthodox Jewish relationships end in divorce and they have fewer restrictions on divorce than both the Christian Bible and Islam. There are several stories out there because they make good TV and people like to talk crap about Jews. But even in Chadidism it's not like this is a rampant problem. But most people have no exposure to this culture so they don't know that. They just believe whatever they stick in the video without checking it. The reason she's on TV is because she is an exception. If it was normal there would be no need to put it on television because it would be something that everybody knew about that happens all the time. And the families are not allowed to pick a spouse for the person. Just like any young girl, a lot of these people get involved in relationships way too soon without thinking about what they're doing first. Except that instead of sleeping around and getting pregnant by some guy that leaves in a few months (as our relationships tend to do with over 50% divorce rate and multiple sex partners) they get married to the guy and divorce later. So the situation is the same thing you see in young relationships all across the West, just painted with a different color brush. I know several Hasidic families in the area and have gotten to be acquainted with the culture. This is not some kind of oppressive normal fact of life for these girls. Only the ones who put themselves in that situation by jumping in when they are not ready and have the ability to say no
