Someone drew a timeline and asked me to name all the landmarks of my life: when did you move house, change school etc. then all the emotional important things like: with who did you buy your first bra, wo who did you go when you had your first period. All the milestones like who helped you choose a highschool, whohelped with homework. When did you start to go out on your own, atwhat time should yoube back home. If you were bullied with whom would you talk etc etc. Then i knew; yes that makes sense you would do that withsomeone of your family. But to most of these questions my answer was: i did it alone.

@@Johannastairwellstudio the strangest thing was: this was a jobcoach', not a psychologists that found out i was neglected. By that time i had an adhd diagnosis and was twice burnout. So i had seen a lot of psychologists and even a psychiatrist by then. And i always said: i think something was wrong with my upbringing but they ignored that. It would have meant so much had i had that diagnose 30 years earlier. it means so much to be seen andunderstood. I guess we can each other now. recognize the vous of neglect. and dissociation in my case. I gave a (experiencial feedback) lecture to a group of psychologists to tell about neglect by autistic parents but within that group everyone left that year and noone from that fascility passed itonwithin the organisation. They are so ignorent and indifferent

Same for me. Its heartbreaking to realize that not everyone grew up this way and we missed something so critical, but that didn’t even seem missing at the time. I just felt alone and broken.

I'm invisible in my family unless it's to belittle or make light of difficulties I go through. I don't spend much time with my family for my own health and well-being. Fortunately, I have a good support system that is appreciative and accepting of who I am.

My husband's family simply talk about weather, their jobs, and never about how they are. They change the subject too when they seem uncomfortable with a topic. Yes, service topics. I find it so boring, and I would feel empty inside.

Emotional neglect in my case ultimately led to severance from society and learning that there are two worlds and not just one.

This fits my family. I had such a a tortured relationship with my mother and blamed her for many years for my depression. But now I see my father was a part of this dynamic too, however, he managed to skirt his role. I've done better at forgiving them. They just didn't know any better and didn't have the tools to change.

Dr Webb, this video is extremely helpful!! An important point that I am realizing is how (without meaning to) I passed the same CEN to my son that I received, and he is also passing it on to his family. But, I can help break this pattern if I inform him of CEN and how deeply it damages our lives. Thank you for your work!!!

Dr. Webb, can you do a short video on the parent who raises a child as if the child is to only discuss a parent's feelings when the parent is ticked off about something? I find "talking about emotions" with your parents confusing to teens because it's not clear enough that the talking is about the child's emotions. A child can grow up thinking they've always talked about emotions - but they were the parent's emotions. What if the child/young adult/adult has never had their own emotions identified or validated but tells others they've always talked about emotions with their parent? Does it make a difference? Is this how a narcissistic parent "parents?"
@fionameredith8787
@fionameredith8787 9 месяцев назад
I think you might be on the right track with your last sentence. It's the parents role to notice and help the child/adolescent/teenager's talk about and understand their emotions. When the parent focuses on their own emotions... the child's emotional needs are neglected.

I'm reading your book (Running on Empty) and I think it's a true bible of our souls. I'm 47 years of young and I've been searching meaning of my life and the reason of not being able to connect life. The book gave me the information that I've been searching for years. Thank you sharing your gifts. Thank you being earth and reaching out us. I wish more people can reach that information. It seems to me that most of the world are emotionally neglected. I hope we can connect with ourselves, life and people as healthy as possible.

I use my emotionally neglectful father as an example of how I never want to act, so I act the opposite of him. It still hurts a lot, the painful childhood events and words are still stuck in my head. How can I try to erase them from my memory? They are always there on the surface.

Other people's feelings including their spouse and kids either don't matter or they don't know how to read them. Among siblings, mean things were said and if you reacted you got you were "too sensitive." Have to say with abuse from siblings physically or verbally neither parent intervened much. Early on I learned to do a lot of things alone. I learned help was not in the offing from parents or most people. That lack of helpfulness from parents is learned by the siblings. A lot of us don't know that neglect is abuse.
