You are confusing Chinese culture that goes back thousands of years with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that took control in 1949. When the CCP took over in 1949 they imposed Communism, a form of Marxism / Socialism and the conservatism of Chines culture mixed with the strong arm tactics of the CCP is what created stories like this one. Liberals in America, such as Bernie Sanders, emulate China for its ideology but don't talk about the authoritarian aspect of the CCP. Violence against people and especially women is surprisingly common, even on the streets of Shanghai I encountered it multiple times a year. I often went into the situation or called for police if it looked like it. But if you've seen it your whole life? People might be used to it.

If there are sounds of domestic violence in apartments, like things breaking, screaming women and crying children, me and friends are alarmed, the police never comes unless there is a dead body: "Are they married? Just wait, they will quiet down". Sometimes the building guard might knock and tell them to hit and scream quietly because it's late. So what can I tell you? On the surface it might look the same, but the reality is insane. And it explains a lot why Chinese people are so distrustful.

In Canada, it is legal to wear a mask in public which conceals your identity unless you are currently engaged in a crime or "unlawful assembly". An Unlawful Assembly is "an assembly of three or more persons who, with intent to carry out any common purpose, assemble in such a manner or so conduct themselves when they are assembled as to cause persons in the neighborhood of the assembly to fear, on reasonable grounds, that they (a) will disturb the peace tumultuously; or (b) will by that assembly needlessly and without reasonable cause provoke other persons to disturb the peace tumultuously." That can be broadly interpreted as "3 people close together whom others are suspicious of". I cant find it right now but when I did my initial research, I found that the legal definition of an "assembly" in canada cannot have a gap that exceeds the distance of 2 blocks in my city. So if there is someone less than 2 blocks from me, I am technically "assembled" with them based on the legal definition. Concealing your identity during an unlawful assembly is punishable by 10 years imprisonment. So on halloween, you technically CAN wear a mask but if there are 2 kids a block away with a carton of eggs, you could go to jail for a decade. Those aren't the only Canadian laws that are written circuitously specifically so you can be charged for bizarre edge-cases. One could argue that's the main purpose of laws. Many things are simultaneously rights and crimes in Canada.

When I visited Amsterdam and looked around the red light district, there were roving gangs of young British men drunk and being hooligans. I overheard some bragging to each other how badly they had mistreated a prostitute, finding it hilarious. It made a real impression about an 'out of the country' mentality. I recently learned this is pretty widely recognized.

@@craig2347 sadly this is so true. British tourists are nasty. It's the reason why I won't go to Spain. I go to a place north Italy away from tourists myself. My dad is a pure Spanish holiday, English fry up, cheap beer get hammered. I can't even stand English people here.... I won't even bother with places full of English people for holiday. Yeah there are places in the world that are terrible for women and it's not just China either. In Imperial China.... "extra marital affair" is actually forbidden. So... I don't know what really happened during this period of "post war and opening up".... I don't get what this mean at all.
