Fancy Free - The Little Green House
This week we will be exploring a large luxury house that was likely built in the 1930s and remained almost unchanged since that time! With vintage art deco fixtures in the bathrooms and a kitchen that looks like it was last renovated in the 60s.
The home appears to have been abandoned for quite a while, with the decay starting to settle in nicely. There were holes in the roof and the walls had started to crumble, I wouldn't be surprised if this house had been abandoned for at least 10 years.
It was bought for $3.6 million about 5 years ago and was demolished shortly after my visit. In its place now stands an enormous and even more luxurious mansion with an estimated value of $18 million. I somehow doubt this new home will sell anytime soon but at least the new design was tasteful.
The second house in this video was a fairly standard mid century built home on a large piece of land. It had some great original features but unfortunately was bought by a private buyer to be demolished and replaced with a much larger home.

WOW ! This is a gorgeous home, could still be fixed up fairly easily. Such nice wallpaper; carpets; stairways; real wood. I call these "Home Alone" houses. I love the beautiful past building and architecture. This place is a real treasure.

Yes, this house really does have a Home Alone feel to it, same type of house and time period. Glad you enjoyed it and thank you very much for your comment!!

The unit on the left at 12:07 is a hot water boiler for a radiant heat system. It was originally designed to use coal but was then converted to natural gas (or possibly oil, then natural gas). Next to it on the right is a very old Carrier air conditioning unit (based on what I can find) which was a forced-air system. I've never seen one of these before but it was pretty easy to find out. Having one in your home during that period (1940s perhaps) was a MASSIVE luxury.
@StaticSpaces
@StaticSpaces 5 месяцев назад
That's crazy, I had no idea they used to make air conditioners that went inside the home. The boiler makes sense though. Thanks very much for that info!!

That’s the tale of two house’s, one massive retro and one mini retro. I don’t believe either of the house’s either updated anything in them, true original’s. Can you imagine buying a 18 million dollar home? 😳 Great video James.

Ya, they both had vintage decor which is my favourite kind of home. Even if you remove one of those zeros, that's still too much for a house! 😂 Thank you very much for your comment Harriet!!

A couple of nice homes there. First one quite spacious with lots of nice features especially the staircase. Love the toile wallpaper in the foyer and hallway , just timeless. Would love to see this house and it’s many bathrooms restored to its former glory. The smaller house was cute would be a cool renovation. I wish everyone’s mind didn’t automatically go to demolition. Thanks for another enjoyable video James!

Ya, I hate to see all these older homes disappearing because even though they aren't very affordable, their replacements are even less so. Thanks very much for your comment!!

The first place was really big. That can opener reminds me of my grandmothers kitchen. Thank you for showing us this house. We even had a bonus haunted chicken. I need to go back and count the bathrooms lol. The bungalow was fun too. I thought the kitchen is so cute. Thank you for taking us along.

Love the entryway. Liked the wallpaper and color of the messy bathroom. Unique kitchen shape but I like it. Liked the green color of the 2nd bathroom. Love the huge walk-in closet. Overall I really liked the colors of the house. The basement staircase may be bland compared to the other one but it still is fancier than other basement staircases. The 2nd little bungalow was really cute. Finally a place that has wallpaper that isn’t atrocious. Love the retro red light to the basement. Finally a place that seemed to just had chillax vibes! Great places!

That first house really was cool, there wasn't much to complain about there. Agree with you about that red vintage light in the second house, that was great. Thank you very much for your comment!!

A nice double feature. The first home needed quite a bit of work. No wonder it got the bulldozer and a new one is on the lot. The second one is a cute home. That exterior green is cool and unique. It has potential for a great income property. Great explores JH. Big Hugs 😊😊

Ha ya, they were both short videos so it made sense. A lot of the value comes from the location but it is also a very well appointed house with good building materials. Thank you very much for your comment!!

Loved both of these places. The older house would have been quite the show place in its time. Such a shame it wasn’t kept up. The mid century house was basic but I bet the people that lived there had some good times. Thanks for the video.

I enjoyed both houses!! The first one was marvelous!! Loved the main staircase!!!! I would love to have a house like that to restore to original!!!! Just don’t see that kind of detail anymore!!! How many staircases did it have? The can opener was one like my grandma used to have!!❤️. Be safe walking around in the dark!!! Enjoying your videos in Illinois!! Pam❤️

Oh ya, I could definitely live in a house like this, especially considering the art deco! I'm not sure but I think there were two staircases going from the main floor to the second. Glad you are enjoying them and thanks a lot for your comment!!

These videos are a double edged sword. I really enjoy seeing these old places, they have so much charm, but I also hate seeing them demolished. We are so wasteful as a species. Also, they key to wooden toilet seats is to not pee on it!😁 Currently have one in my bathroom.
@StaticSpaces
@StaticSpaces 5 месяцев назад
But isn't it also going to absorb the chemicals when cleaning it? I guess they are probably warmer than a plastic seat though. Thanks very much for your comment!!

@@StaticSpaces as long as the wood is treated and urethane applied it should be fine. I never understood wooded toilet seats either. I guess it's for a fancy look.

Hi James! 2 great homes. Really like the first one. Love the original features. $18,000,000 that’s just…I don’t even know! Who needs a house that size and that expensive? There’s some greed in the property business
@StaticSpaces
@StaticSpaces 5 месяцев назад
From what I had seen it wasn't even that big of a house, just very well designed with expensive taste in mind but it's a world the majority of us will never know. Thanks a lot for your comment!!

James I liked the second house better than the first. As you said it was mostly dark. I only liked the staircase and the upstairs rooms and the kitchen. It seems all those bathrooms were all destroyed. Oh and James try not to show us those gross toilet bowls EW🤮 I have heard the term MCMANSION used by other explorers but exactly what is its. Two pretty cool houses. But seriously James I would have enjoyed more if there was more light. There were dark corners that the nosy neighbors wouldn’t have seen. I don’t mean to be critical but I’m taking the time to watch so I’d like to see what you are showing. Overall these Static Spaces were cool. I do like your work. Thanks for sharing these 2 houses. As always stay safe and well.👍🆒👀

Yes I completely agree, I shouldn't have tried to film the first house that day, I should have come back the next day. I am kicking myself for that but at least I did get something from there but the video really didn't do it justice. There was nothing gross in the toilet, it was just bits of the ceiling that had fallen into the bowl. Thank you very much for your comment!!

First house it seems like all the bathrooms were the most messed up, except the one with the blue sink, toilet and tub. Second house, you went through it pretty fast, I understand why you did it fast in the first house but not the second.
@StaticSpaces
@StaticSpaces 5 месяцев назад
Honestly, I wish I had spent more time in both the houses. It was getting dark fast during the first explore but back when I filmed these, I was told I should make shorter videos, Soni tended to rush them. I don't think that was the best advice. Thanks very much for your comment!!
