In this video, I go exploring the most dangerous mine I've been in, and probably the most dangerous mine at Cerro Gordo. This was not just an exploration, we were searching to see if the 200 level opened to the outside, because there were theories that cold air was coming into the main shaft and freezing the water pipes. The mine itself was completely boarded up, so Johnny and I had to dig in from above through tight squeezes to get into the 200 level of the Union Mine. This shaft was deemed too dangerous years after the deadliest mining disaster in Cerro Gordo's history took the lives of between 8 and 35 miners in the 1870s.
“Cerro Gordo’s deadliest mine disaster struck in the early 1870s when a cave-in killed at least eight and as many as 35 Chinese miners. They were mining in limestone below the 200-foot level and failed to shore up the tunnel with timber, former Cerro Gordo mining foreman Fred Fisher told a Times reporter in 1950. Their bodies were never recovered.”
- LA Times March 12, 1950
THANK YOU!!
I moved to Cerro Gordo in March 2020 because of the pandemic and to relieve our longtime caretaker so he could be back home. I've been here ever since. There have been ups and downs, but I feel I am learning a lot and becoming a better person.
Follow along on this channel for more from the town. I have no plans to leave and will continue making videos to update the progress on all the projects!
The town was originally established in 1865 and by 1869 they were pulling 340 tons of bullion out of the mountain for Los Angeles.
The silver from Cerro Gordo was responsible for building Los Angeles. The prosperity of Cerro Gordo demanded a larger port city and pushed LA to develop quickly.
The Los Angeles News once wrote:
“What Los Angeles is, is mainly due to it. It is the silver cord that binds our present existence. Should it be uncomfortably severed, we would inevitably collapse.”
In total, there has been over $17,000,000 of minerals pulled from Cerro Gordo. Adjusted for inflation, that number is close to $500,000,000.
It’s been a wild ride so far owning a ‘ghost town’ and we’re having a lot of fun figuring out what to do with it.

If you plan on going to any more places within the mines that were previously sealed off I'd definitely reccomend investing in some respirators (n-95 preferably) just because there could be some potentially hazardous mycelium down there

My great grandpa worked on that mine and lost quite a few friends in the incident. He always told my dad that a rival mine company had been trying to sabotage the mine by cutting electricity and destroying the tracks at night. He said he didn’t know for sure if it collapsed due to someone’s malicious actions or if it was an accident. Either way still crazy

No abandoned mine but where I lived in England had an entrance to a priest hole from the 1600s because it was made illegal here for Catholics to practice their religion so many old houses and castles from secretly Catholic families built tunnels and hiding places for priests (and themselves) to escape when they were searched by the Anglican authorities. It lead from an old house built in 1500ish to the cemetery half a mile away and we found an entrance into the tunnel that connected with the cave system under our house. It was pretty neat but unfortunately so much had collapsed that we couldn’t get too far.

I learned recently that in the early years of denim, jeans were really expensive and most people couldn't afford them (including miners), so some of the mine bosses who were more affluent would buy them for their workers. The miners would change into jeans at the start of their shift in the mine, then at the end of the shift they'd change back into their own clothes and leave the jeans for the next work crew. It's why stacks of discarded clothing can occasionally be found in older workings. I'm glad you both made it out safe. It sure was sketchy with all the dynamite and blasting caps scattered everywhere, and the rocks sheering off at the end! Scary. I think you've made the right choice in sealing off that level for safety reasons, and I think it's also respectful to the miners who are buried there. It's always an eerie feeling watching someone walking around a mine that people have died in, especially on the same level. When I saw the miners graffiti I did wonder who they were. Do you have records on the miners that died there, and some history about their lives? I think that would be a fitting tribute if that information is still available. (I apologise if you've covered this in a newer video - I haven't caught up with them all yet.

My Great-great-grandfather and Great-grandfather were lifelong miners in a small coal town in Arkansas. My Grandpa was one of thirteen children that lived in a house that was 30 x 40. That was considered pretty luxurious to the fellow miners. My great-grandfather heard that a photographer was going to be coming to town. He had my Great-grandmother clean off the porch and find the nicest clothes she could for the two of them. My grandpa said that he took absolute pride in that picture and would look at it most nights after coming home. Back to my Grandpa. The boys in the family were expected to start working in the mine after school around the age of seven. My grandpa despised working in the mine. They were raised to believe that there was only two ways to live. You either mine or you join the Army. My Grandpa decided to do the latter. He became a cook. He ended up meeting my grandma who was in the Army as a baker. They spent 55 years together.

The center piece mentions the actress Marion Davies and how her new movie "Going Hollywood" is in its second week, smashing the box office. That movie was released in December 1933 hence how we can infer that a release date 2 weeks prior to this article means this journal is from late December 1933 or early 1934 !

Edit: There are actually two different papers being shown. The first is the Arizona Daily Star from January 1934. The second is the Los Angeles Examiner which is also from early 1934. The Marion Davies picture seen at 8:06 is 'Going Hollywood', which came out in 1933 but was still running in early 1934. It actually says 'copyright 1934' at 8:16 if you look really really carefully under the headline 'Milked'. I bet different miners had different papers from Arizona, and L.A, depending on where they were from and what they wanted to know.

@@aussiehighways1130 Yes you are correct, that is one of them. The other is an L.A paper from the same time or perhaps a bit earlier, as it aligns with the release of 'Going Hollywood', a Marion Davies picture seen at 8:06. My uncle worked the mine his name was Richard Gandara. I will make it a point to head up that way next time we’re in Keeler my brother owns the Ranchito Mendoza property on the coroner of Laws & Cerro Gordo. Hope to meet up with you one day. In all the times we went up there we never ever went into the buildings except the mine you guys are in. The craziest thing about the whole experience was how the hell did they get all that machinery up there, and the elevator shaft unbelievable and cold. Stay safe you’ll get it done. See you!

I actually mentioned that. You get pets that also give back & what Old Western town wouldn't have a few. It would add to the authenticity with very little work. I know there are predators & I've lost a few over the years & I've got many more predators than he will up there. Wolves, Bobcats, coyotes, birds of prey, bear, dogs, fetal cats, snakes, opposums & believe it or not Ravens... the smartest bird in United States goes after the chicks. I let them out and they free range during the day and go back to the coop at night and I just shut the door. They know where to return to. I imagine there are a lot of insects, seeds & even mice they can supplement their diet with. Also they don't need a lot of water expecially when they're not in chicken houses or triple digit temps. The USPS will bring them to your house or call you when they arrive at the nearest post. Good idea. Living things are great for loneliness. We ALL get a bit lonely at times.
