On that day, Raikkonen became the 2007 World Champion in a car that could not even beat Heidfeld's BMW

@64Fabby 2007 definitely not, considering they actually finished with less than half the points of both Ferrari and McLaren (technically). But 2008 for sure they were close, they were not far behind in the constructors

High downforce circuits weren't ferrari's strengths like Hungary, Monaco etc. Kimi got the job done that year. People will remember him as 2007 world champion while this generation of fans won't even know who Heidfeld is. And that year BMW was mighty strong. Not as strong as 2008 but still good. The only reason they couldn't get decent points is because both Ferrari and Mclaren had phenomenal drivers in great form. Back in the day Massa was a legit top tier driver

This is and probably always will be my favourite year of F1. To see Hamilton burst onto the scene as an F1 Rookie and not just take it to but sometimes outshine Alonso, the reigning world champion with a BIG reputation was totally phenomenal in my eyes. I really hoped he could make history and win the title in his rookie season, I thought it would happen and it was agonising to see his demise in the final race!! Alonso was a major prick that year so it was small comfort at least that Kimi snook in and took the crown that year! It had everything, the highs, the lows, tension, it was just epic and bittersweet!

I felt about the 2007 season the same thing I felt about the 2010 season: mostly bland races at the same time there was a very interesting fight for the championship. From what I remember the european, japanese and chinese GPs were awesome but most of the other races were a bit dull, and the Monaco GP was one of the worst/most uneventful races I had ever seen at the time. I was a die hard Kimi fan back then (today I don't follow auto racing anymore, since the last 5 years) and even right after the chinese GP I wasn't counting on him to win the WC, I thought it was so unlikely and, as you, I was rooting for Hamilton for some time because I thought it'd be awesome to see a rookie to win the championship. And then came the last race and the WC was settled in the most awesome way that was possible. The only thing that displeased me a bit was that Kimi became champion driving a Ferrari, a team I disliked - in 2005 I wanted so much to see Kimi being crowned champ in the Mclaren. I remember that soon after that '07 championship ended I noticed Mclaren would have the last car numbers and pits the next year, because the lack of drivers' champion AND any constructors' points after the spying episode...I thought something like "what an irony for all the performance and leading role they had this year". Lastly, IMHO the best F1 seasons of the last 15 years were 2008 and 2012. 2005 was interesting too, and it was refreshing after all those Schumi years

Interesting fact: ALO beat HAM time with HARD USED tires
@MT-pv2rf
@MT-pv2rf 3 года назад
The tyres were different back then. Sometimes drivers could put in similar times on the hards and softs because the hards allowed you to push, without doing too much damage to the compound. Hamilton was actually well known for preferring the harder compound back then because they allowed him to lock up, with the super aggressive style he had, while keeping life in the tyres. At Hungary, Alonso chose the hard tyres because the soft tyres weren't working for him. He says all of this in the post qualifying press conference. He specifically chose the soft tyres for q1/q2 and the harder tyres for q3. Hamilton preferred the soft tyres that weekend. Also, Alonso wasn't faster than Hamilton. Hamilton was faster in q1, q2, the first run in q3 and then Alonso only went a tenth faster than Hamilton's first run, with his second run. Hamilton clearly would have taken pole without being impeded by Alonso.

@@MT-pv2rf the fact McLaren puto Alo on USED hards says a lot from them. I mean, if they were as fast, wouldnt the soft tyre be useless? That doesnt make sense for me
@MT-pv2rf
@MT-pv2rf 3 года назад
@@elsergios6704 Alonso wasn't on used tyres either. This was initially misreported on by the media, based on what Alonso said to the FIA. Firstly, Alonso claimed that he held Hamilton up in the pits because of a miscommunication with the countdown. He said that the countdown he was given by his engineer was longer than the countdown the lollypop man made. This was a lie. The countdown was completely in sync for everyone listening on the radio. Secondly, after realising that his lie wasn't going to work, Alonso then changed his story, in front of the stewards, by claiming that he waited until the countdown was over to ask about why he was put on a used set of tyres. Alonso could have proved this was true by handing over McLaren's private pitlane radio. (On track radio is public to all the teams and the FIA. Pitlane radio is private). But Alonso and McLaren failed to produce any pitlane radio because they lied. The FIA didn't believe them and handed out penalties to both Alonso and McLaren. You can even see from the live feed that Alonso is on new tyres. They have zero contract patches on and are completely fresh out of the tyres blankets.

@TheTororist 4 года назад
lewis not letting alonso by on track during the fuel-burning lap is just disobeying teamorders which almost every driver does every season so yes, intra-team problem. Alonso intentionally blocking lewis in the pit lane and preventing a crucial final lap from him was deemed to have breeched the sporting code by the FIA and was therefore considered ''prejudicial to the interests of the competition and to the interests of motor sport generally'' thus the penalty.

The truth is Hamilton was McLaren's rising star from a young age. They signed the best driver on the grid (Alonso) expecting him to be their title contender with Hamilton being the understudy, but since the opening round in Australia, McLaren realised Hamilton was much more capable than they had previously believed. They made promises to Alonso that they couldn't deliver because Hamilton's performances wouldn't allow them to do so. Each party was partly to blame, but this is unsportsman-like behaviour in the truest form from a World Champion who will do anything to make a point and/or win. I respected Fernando for being one of the best F1 driver's I've ever seen, but it's fair to say now, and with Fernando agreeing in recent interviews, Lewis is the best driver we've seen in decades and this caused an upset from day one.

Edgie Braahhh You're missing the point. Alonso had the opportunity to win 2 titles with McLaren from 2007-2008 straight after winning his 2 titles with Renault. He literally joined McLaren at the perfect time to become a 4xWDC but Hamilton walked into Alonso's life and destroyed his career before becoming the McLaren world champ in 2008 that Alonso failed to be. Alonso also had 2 chances at title glory with Ferrari and failed there as well, hilariously by getting outperformed in the 2010 title decider by Vitali Petrov of all people.

@@MT-pv2rf I doubt that dude will take your points on board. He thinks that Fernando failed to add to his titles purely because he wasn't driving a merc lol. The funny thing is that even if that were true it would still be Alonsos own fault as after showing us how toxic he can be towards the ambitions of the whole team in the season featured here he painted himself into a corner where Ferrari were his only chance of joining a relatively competitive package. No other team wanted to touch him after '07 when they realised how dysfunctional Fernando could be when he feels he has a a grievance that justifies it.

It really seemed Hamilton dominated a bit Alonso since Canada 2007. But also seemed Lewis didnt get much better as a driver since 2008. 2011 to 2013 he had a better car than Alonso (17 poles by the car he was driving vs 2 poles in wet from the Ferrari) and Alonso scored more points than Lewis in every season by avoiding silly crashes on track and being consistent. I dont think Alonso would have lost 2016 championship with Rosberg and I dont think Alonso would have been 10 laps behind an Alpine in Hungary 2021 or making a mistake with the Brake Magic button in Baku 2021. I think Hamilton is better in qualifying and F1 until 2011 was hugely determined by grid position as it was impossible to overtake due to dirty air and no DRS. I dont think Lewis will score more points than Alonso in the current Aston Martin as it is quite true what Alonso said that Lewis was an expert starting 1st on the grid but he has weaknesses when he had to battle with the pack.
