During this HVAC service call, I replaced the TXV on a newer 2 1/2 ton Trane system. The AC system was installed in the last 18 months, so the part was still under warranty.
I used the MeasureQuick App to demonstrate how the TXV restriction affected the system pressures and temperatures.
In part 2, I'll show how I pulled vacuum and started the system up.

did you know that if you dont insulate your liquid line it can actual cause for subcool to be low given the illusion of low charge. This is apart from the txv good job on the diagnosing

new tech here, on a heat pump would it be possible for a bleeding by reversing valve mimic the signs of bad txv? or vice versa?

As a matter fact, I just came across one of those the other day. A reversing valve seal bleed would usually causes high suction pressure and high superheat with slightly low head pressure, as a result of the Discharge gases being slightly diverted to the low pressure side of the system. Also if the TXV were stuck open, you would also have high suction pressure due to a flooded evap coil, but that will cause low superheat and because there’s not much or any superheat to subcool you would have low subcooling as well. Good question because sometimes they can be tough to you diagnose if you ever come across it in the field. Thanks for watching!

Both in cooling mode because the bleed is between the high and low side so the true suction and vapor service port will be the same. In heat pump mode your vapor service port will reflect the high side of the system, just after compression.

I thought if the txv was not opening you would have high subcool and high superheat?

Yes sir, I’m not sure if you noticed in the intro the superheat was high, about 32 degrees and around 25 sec mark the sub cooling was beginning to climb as a result of the liquid backing up in the condenser right before the unit shut off on low pressure. But if it weren’t for the low pressure switch the sub cooling would’ve gotten really high. That’s what I really like about the fieldpiece rapid rail clamps they respond quick enough to observe these types of things. Thanks for watching!

LOL yeah, I just figured it was quicker to leave it installed and work around it, than to try to uninstall and reinstall. I also left the left panel on for the same reason, so I didn’t have to cut the drains loose and reinstall. I try to be as non-evasive as possible and working on equipment, something I’ve learned over the years. The more you mess with the more chances things can go wrong. Thanks for watching!
