Mike Patton was just 20 years old when he wrote the lyrics to all the songs on The Real Thing album. He wrote them and rearranged some of the songs in 2 weeks. He actually changed his singing voice for this album to differentiate FNM from his other band, Mr Bungle. He sounds very different on subsequent FNM albums. He's a bit of a musical genius tbh, with all the projects and collaborations he's involved with. Great review. Jay Rah. 👍
This song is a masterpiece. Mesmerized when I first heard it in 1989. I remember walking under the Throgs Neck bridge listening on repeat. Still get chills when I haven't heard it in a while.
The thing about this song... Whenever my kids were crying about things... This song would start up in my head, reminding me how little they know in communicating their frustrations. Helped a lot.
The Real Thing is a Top 10 all time album for me. Every track kicks like a mule in its own way. For me, it's their masterpiece, although most FNM fans would probably vote for Angel Dust. Mature beyond their years when the recorded this
Everyone splooges about Patton's vocals, which is great, but I've always loved FNM's instrumental compositions. I could listen to these songs without any vocals and still love 'em.
I'm not sure too many at that show knew exactly how special that performance was. We need that passion today. We need music to bring us all back together as humans. Thank you Jay Rah for helping make this happen.
Glad you mentioned Real Thing as that is potentially my favorite FNM song. That's a very well written song for any musician let alone a kid as young as Mike was when he wrote it. Going to check out your react to that one right now. Cheers!
Mike Bordin , the faith no more drummer is probably 1 of the best in the business. He played with OZZY OSBORNE for awhile . You should watch him with ozzy playing PERRY MASON, an amazing song 🎵
Yes that's Mike!!!! he can literally do anything with his voice and trust me when I say you haven't heard anything yet, the number of times I've had people ask me if that's Mike singing because he sings in so many different ways, he can sing anything, really glad you like the song and thank you for your reaction
This is actually one of my favourite ever songs by these so I'm glad you did this! The haunting keyboards give this a haunting atmosphere and I absolutely love that about it.
You automatically gained my respect for using a video with the lyrics subtitled and discussing them. Most song react videos I've seen don't bother with lyrics, they just make wild guesses. That shit just pisses me off. This is one of my favorite Faith No More songs, but let's be honest, nobody's gonna be able to make out most of the vocals on their own. Hard rock and metal are like that. That's why bands would include lyric booklets in CDs. I dunno what they do with digital downloads...maybe they include a PDF or something? I like owning a physical product though.
Same here. Epic was top 10 video back in the day and I couldn’t stand it. Never listened to any other songs from them until the other day I heard “We care a lot” on a talk radio show but wasn’t sure who it was but went straight to FNM based on instinct and now I’m discovering and learning of Pattons ventures.
Glad to see you reacted to one my favorite songs by them! That whole album is fire 🔥 , if you don’t mind covers check out War Pigs! It’s a great cover!! And if you like instrumentals check out Woodpecker from Mars!!!!
Yes! That transition...I was thinking wait til he hears that scream...hell love it! I think ya did.wicked. live at the Brixton academy is an awesome album.
Oh YEEEEAAAAHHHH! Nobody ever reacts to this song. Love it, man. Keep ‘em coming. Insightful interpretation of the lyrics, too. You are a great reactor. Love.
You should absolutely listen to their song "Evidence"... after what you've seen so far from FNM, this song will trip you the fuck out. It's a stupid funky song, even though you're a guy there's still a 70/30% chance you'll get pregnant just from listening to it. They really are an insanely diverse band, wildly underrated and it's a shame that everyone seems to know them from "Epic", which is one of the most garbage songs they've ever written.
I swear I must be the only person that thinks without a doubt it's about an abusive, toxic relationship...lol ...love this song, this band and most of Patton's projects...so glad I found your channel! Definitely earned a sub! :)
I am learning these guys with you. I'm glad you get them better than I. Listening to them isn't necessarily enjoyable but not unlistenable. I'd never buy anything by them but I can listen again. I guess I find them interesting but not fascinating
Wow never seen anyone react to this song. This is in my top 3 FNM songs, Woodpecker from Mars is my #1 you should check it out. You might also like Melvin's start off with "The Bit"
Renee picked an Explosive/Awesome SONG again for you to react to!! Your personal 'Thoughts' on the Lyrics are spot on, 'I Believe'. Keep on 'That' brah, everybody has their own perspective but yours are most always 'Spot On'.. Yes the 'Lyrics' are about EVERY child's perception.. BUT they also delve into the perspective of like a 'Teenager/Young Person', right during 'The Time' when they 'Think' they know everything LMBO.. NO doubt, Patton made F.N.M. explode ST8 THROUGH the STRATOSPHERE with his uniqueness of Vocals & Presence !! F.N.M has so many other ST8 Bombshell musical giving's that i do not think they get the resect they deserve. ROCKIN MUSIC!! LOVE F.N.M!!!
While the real thing is definitely one of my favorite tracks, you should check out midlife crisis. It really shows how crazy Mike Patton's voice can get. If you really wanna hear his crazy range check out Mr bungle and Fantomas. If you are in a nice r&b mood check out Lovage Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By, him and Jennifer Charles have an amazing vocal chemistry.
At some point you should react to this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-onN3b1vaOdw.html it's the band on my favorite at the time Yo! MTV Raps--yeah I am old. around the time of The Real Thing when Epic, which you reacted to was a huge hit. The second song also from the album, they Fab 5 Freddy and Ed Lover can't help but join in, it's fun. Keep up the good work. love the channel.
"Mike hates children.."blah, blah..`C`mon, people... Really ??:) I mean, we all get mad sometimes on a random childish behavior, but that`s not really the message of this song, ok?:) It`s bit more complex than that...A mother-child relation in this song is more like a metaphor of `hit and miss` teaching regarding the behaviorism psychology....and yes - for the adults, to be more funny!:) It`a about a person with a strong creative energy, somehow independent, but who likes to share the products of his creativity - "the toys" (music/songs) - to the world, as the world by itself had manufactured these toys - all in a matter of free will and the greater spirit.:) Yet, the first expectation of this person, regarding the people he meets, will be openness for him and those gifts, right...? But, look what happens: instead of open-minded people, he gets a hoard of `brain-cooked` zombies, trying to break his free will on the most euphemistic way - by playing the role of a parents on him! How would you feel when someone would approach to you on that level of false nursery, either from a wish to glutton you in `love` urge or thinking you`re to small to comprehend `Life`, or out of personal existential and irrational fear - just like most of the parents do!? You would get sick of it, right? :) Shocked by this, our protagonist still manages to look through the eyes of this zombie-persons who misjudged him, only because "he`s omniscient" - moody, free-minded and open to the integrity of the world - as he was from the beginning! :) He`s a `child` in a christian way, but he gets a poor treatment from others, that`s been labeled in his mind like a siege of zombies around him...... So he starts symbolically to eat those zombies, by playing a role of a weak child, pretending he`s everything what `a zombie` is trying to impute to him - giving them the taste of their own medicine! But, he`s still open to share the toys, since he`s omniscient, as always been.:) As I told you, an unique and a complex lyrical stuff! :))) Now, Patton`s voice has really evolved through the years...From 1988 to 1991. - when "The Real Thing" album was out, he forced this nasal, high pitched voice, somehow irritating, yet mellow and poppy by the mainstream standards of that time.:) Soon, from 1992 to now on, he went to tenor and baritone crooning voice as his main voice by this time. :) If you want to taste this voice of a grown up Patton, take a listen of FNM`s : A Small Victory, Evidence, Everything`s Ruined and last but not the least, their cover song Easy!.....Yet, if you want to stay on the trail of a funky-shit and Patton`s poppy nasal voice, feel free to go to: Mr. Bungle`s The Girls of Porn and Squeeze Me Macaroni....That stuff will blow ya, take my word! :) You won`t believe your ears.:) Once again: a totally different experience from My Ass is on Fire...Word!
This earned you my sub. Keep it going with the good choices. If you like to check out an artist that Mike Patton got me into, the check out Ween. Try the song Voodoo Lady for starters. You won't regret it
Here is some old school Faith no More with their original lead singer Chuck Mosley. I would love to see you react to this song. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LQhX8PbNUWI.html
I always recommend to first time listeners to avoid videos as a rule. And with Faith No More, Epic is one of the worst songs to start with. It gives you an inaccurate view of the band and often turns people off. Mike Patton is one of the most versatile vocalists out there with an insane range. He is underrated, as are FNM as a whole.
Mike Patton is absolutely NOT underrated. He's extremely highly regarded for his vocal talent. A critical analysis of singers and their ranges from 2014 found him to be the most gifted vocalist in popular music. He is literally as highly rated as you can get.
