Mike wins by talent if you take your emotions away and focus on the talent and discography mikes wins. But Layne is more popular and simple and people tend to like that more then complex and underrated.

There is no competition, in my opinion. I am a fan of both singers, and have seen them both perform, live, on multiple occasions. I don't mean to knock Layne Staley unfairly. He certainly had loads of talent. I thought that the AIC albums that he sang on were great. BUT, Mike Patton beats him on every meaningful measure, as far as I am concerned. I don't think that there is ANYTHING that Layne Staley was capable of doing, vocally, that Mike Patton couldn't do just as well, if not better. Plus, from seeing multiple live performances of both singers, Mike Patton was/is the superior performer. Heck... I know that Layne Staley obviously was struggling with drug addiction, but he was, quite frankly, TERRIBLE at EVERY live performance I saw of his. I NEVER saw him perform well in person. During the rare occasions where he was actually CAPABLE of standing in front of a mic and singing, his pitch was HORRIBLE. He couldn't sing in tune. He didn't seem like he gave a shit about it, either. At another show, he came out, "sang" (if you can call it that) about a song and a half, walked back to the drum riser, laid down and apparently napped through the rest of the set, while Jerry Cantrell took over on lead vocals for the rest of the night (very well, I might add). As for Mike Patton, EVERY performance that I have seen has been SPOT ON. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now, I know that folks have TOLD me that Layne Staley, at his best, was much better than what I witnessed. But the fact remains... aside from studio recordings, EVERY vocal performance that I witnessed, live, was poor. By contrast, EVERY vocal performance that I witnessed, live, was amazing. I know... it was probably the drugs. But that's part of who Layne Staley WAS. Mike Patton didn't let drugs affect his ability to sing and perform. And Mike Patton went on to a MUCH more innovative and prolific musical career, which still continues to this day. Layne Staley? Not so much. Might he have gone on to become much better had he not OD'd and died? Maybe. But he didn't. Might he have been better than Mike Patton, had it not been for his addiction? I doubt it, but I suppose it's possible. But the fact remains... he was addicted to drugs, it did adversely affect his performances, and he died from his addiction before he could overcome it.

@Christopher Moltisanti mike patton can make his voice sound just like anything he wants....layne....zombie type dudes from I am legend...he has voiced monsters in video games....and at the same time asked by many countries official symphonies to conduct and be a vocal instrument to accompany then....Layne never got any of thos invites....Alice in chains was an awesome garage band

Those are my two favorites. If we talk about diversity or range, no one like Mike, maybe the Best talking about it. But emotionally Layne is one of the Best (the Best for me). Any of them its a genius. RIP Layne

They seem to really be only concerned with the standard "clean" pop style singing he does. They've really only been blown away by Easy, Just A Man, and Deep Deep Down, and highlight in those and this video that they're basically looking to see if he can sing "clean" and have belting ability. Diversity of technical proficiency - while a small amount touched on - really hasn't been a terrible lot of interest to them or shown on this channel.

I’ve never heard anyone say Layne couldn’t sing live, it’s actually the opposite everywhere you look. Not sure what you heard but everything I’ve heard from Layne live is top notch aside from a few shows here and there. I never could stand Patton’s voice but I gotta give him credit for range but to me that doesn’t mean much
