So far ive only heard one side of the argument. What I wonder from the other side is...Are these "helping" organizations legally liable to be financially transparent? I'm curious to know, if it is how you say, how the money would be spent. For example I wonder how much it actually cost to run the operations (pay wages). We all know businesses come with a shit ton of expenses. I don't know much about the running of organizations but it is a business. Therefore the organization will be guided by a business model (which inturn, fails to factor in that their clients are human). So money/financial gain and maintaining ALL current government policies/laws is essential. I keep seeing one main flaw in how businesses, governments, hospitals, etc operate. They all are void of what humans are innately guided by...morals. I theorize that han civilization would be better off if law was guided by morals with a splash of policy and law to complement the societal/cultural morals. I dont know. Just my thoughts with no actual expert experience or education backing it.

I'm no different than I ever was, but I've started telling people I'm autistic because I want to normalize it. The people in my family who are diagnosed? I found out years after they got their diagnoses because they wanted to keep it a secret. They don't act NT. Who do they think they're protecting by pretending? They're either ND or they're just extremely weird. I'd rather be "weird" with a reason. A reason with an explanation that provides for strategies that make me more capable of coping, planning, and achieving. An explanation that some, not enough, people can relate to and be helpful with.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s tells people, “just bear with me. I have autism and sometimes words are hard.” Im 56 and was diagnosed 2yrs ago and the shock value of telling people I’m on the spectrum is quite satisfying because I’m a Navy veteran with a college degree. You would be surprised at how many people think autism is a learning disability or a mental disorder and yes, it helps normalize it. I try to explain autism the best I can, usually from my experience on the spectrum. It’s been 2yrs and I’m still learning about myself. Hope you have a great week my fellow autistic person! ☀️❤️✌🏻😁

I won't throw "autism" out there because it can be a shock factor for people that don't know the spread of "types" & what specific ones entail. It's your golden opportunity to enlighten someone about the differences & that any type doesn't mean you're stupid, illiterate, etc. Hang in there. I'm a gay autistic man with ADHD. The extent to which what you say applies to each of those traits of mine is, well, a lot. Pick one, and lots of people with the trait will tell you: - they have no role models - they are shamed and shunned - they find society outright hostile - they are starved of feeling of belonging, they feel alien - they find niches for themselves to protect their minds from potential attacks in ordinary life situations, and miss life changing opportunities

It's a hellish battle getting diagnosed if you're presenting as "high functioning" (ablist bullshit). I paid for my ADHD diagnosis so I could then access meds and support, I was hoping the NHS would transfer it over. No chance because I still have the waiting list for the psychological assessments to make sure the meds aren't damaging me. I'm still waiting for the ASD diagnosis on the NHS. Meanwhile I continue to suffer damage through a lack of meds and recognition.

Suddenly the world and my experiences in it began to make sense. My kids were bullied by teachers and principals for most of their lives. I couldn’t stop them. This is one of a number of reasons that we homeschooled from pre-K through 12. We had seen how other disabled kids were treated at school, how the parents had to go to court to get the school to perform for their kids even though the school was already legally obligated to do so. Then there was the whole bullying thing. The sad thing was that whenever our son did have contact with public school kids he was always picked on - once on school grounds at public swimming lessons that everybody had to pay for. When I told the people working at the pool (school employees) that one of the kids had stuffed my child in a locker (and the mother of that child simply ran off with her kid and didn't even tell me what the heck was going on) they did absolutely nothing. Now that our son is in his 20's he has told me that if he had had to go to public school it would have ended tragically for either himself or someone else. Even with all the challenges we faced over the years I am 100% convinced that we did the right thing by our son. Unfortunately with the way the system in general is here, it would be easier to find a four-leaf clover than get help if you have autism.

This is SOOO frustrating to watch. I have to admit, even more because this is coming from a very well developed, rich, human rights-focused nation (I know I know, no one's perfect). But I live in Turkiye, watching local news here is ... well, I can only handle 10 minutes of it because it is really depressing, infuriating and super confusing. But at least at the end of it, we can say 'oh well, this is Turkiye' and shrug and move on with our day (we have to because the stress would be a killer). When I watch news from developed nations, I become so frustrated because you guys are supposed to have figured it all out, you are supposed to an example to countries like Turkiye and many many more. So this topic is sooo heartbreaking. But your voice will be heard if you are loud, so be loud! Stand up for your rights! It happens with everything government does. Those the get elected have to reward friend with deal that allow profits to be made of tax payer money. Here in Canada they do this by private delivery of healthcare services yet there is no competition. A corporation just magically appears to have exactly the set up that government is looking for to do the private delivery. To me looks like someone in government said to friend, start corporation offering X, Y, and Z services that we need. Then we'll lay off the healthcare staff doing it now and give you a lucrative contract that costs more than what we currently pay doing now.

The fact is us late diagnosed people are so used to being a burden on everybody else that we wouldn't even apply for funding as our quality of life seems so bleak that why would we waste the funding that the next generation could use... So many of us are not even going to waste the doctors time getting formally diagnosed - We are too polite and too understanding of our "lack of" value to others. What I am saying is if we all went to get diagnosed and got the support to improve our lives, the government would be astonished at how many more of us there is - they should be grateful that our condition makes us not feel worthy of others time/help - it's only advocates for us that anything gets asked for. My point is, it's too late for many of us and knowing that those who need it most now will lose funding is even more motivation for me/us to avoid getting the support we need to improve our lives.

I really appreciate your video on this, especially it being unmasked. I'm not used to seeing videos like this by autistic people and I'm glad. I feel like I'm sponging up a lot of anxiety through it but we've gotta be there for each other :( The reason all this is freaking me out is because I've suspected I have ASD (and perhaps ADHD) since 2019 and now I'm less than a week away from a screening that my psychologist suggested and I'm on my way to a potential diagnosis... I remember seeing something else on instagram, I'm not sure if it has to do with this but people in Australia who are diagnosed with ASD might have to retake their drivers' test?? I've had my license for 8 years and I've never been in an accident that wasn't my fault (even then it was only one time) and never been pulled over. I live in the sticks so busses and trains aren't a good substitute for everything and ubers are way too expensive (if they can even come out here cause I can't get food uber'd). The idea that I would need to take that stupid test again while I'm also actively legally able to give my younger brother driving lessons is ridiculous and I really don't want to get caught up in that. I think I saw it effecting QLD the most but it's throughout Australia and I really don't want it to become an issue down in NSW.

I found what they were talking about, There is an ABC article titled New national Fitness to Drive standards are 'discriminatory' and 'humiliating' for autistic drivers, psychologists say If you look at that it is that the national Assessing Fitness to Drive standards were updated in 2022 to list autism as a medical condition deemed to have an impact on driving. Apparently in Qld it has been in place since 2012 that autism is on the list of disabilities that need to be reported but it isn't listed on the TMR website. It also doesn't say how often you need to get the medical clearance. Looking at this article Qld has the strictest reporting requirements but they aren't the only state to say that you do need to disclose it. Something that was mentioned in the article was that people that were being late diagnosed weren't being told at diagnosis that this was something that they would need to report to keep their licence so it seems like they haven't been made aware of this requirement either. Currently in NSW you don't have to report it.

In Canada, you are only covered for an Autism diagnoses until the age of 18. That means the onslaught of females who were misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed and others who find out way too late, have to pay thousands of dollars to get the official diagnoses. I'm pretty sure my dr knew this for years. I asked him one day why he never told me (found out on my own with the help offriends) he said cus he knew I'd never be able to afford the diagnoses. It's beyond terrible in Canada even whilst dying in the ER from whatever. We wait 3 days in waiting rooms. Only to be treated as drug addicts or mental patients when you try to explain how severe pain can cause and usually causes terrible meltdown even in adults. @@igitha..._Quite frankly, there are a few common mistakes in dealing with slow drivers (mistakes which neurotypicals are just as bad or worse about making) that probably contributed (not knowing the situation or your exact reaction I can't say for sure, but I think the odds are good that the following will be applicable, given how common they are). First of all, tailgating. It increases accident risk, tends to make the driver ahead of you think you're being aggressive, and makes frustrated gestures more visible to the car ahead. And just about *everybody* does it routinely. Make sure that you're passing any given mark on the pavement at least 2 seconds after the car in front. Even a 1 second following distance, which is still too close, would be a significant improvement for many drivers. The second issue is awareness of drivers in adjacent lanes and confidence in passing: many drivers get too tunnel-visioned into their own lane and aren't aware enough about what's going on in the next lane or confident enough about switching lanes to pass a slow driver in their own lane, and this often contributes to the tailgating problem. If you have 25 kph of closure speed on a driver ahead of you, you should be moving left to pass (assuming right-hand traffic) well before you reach him (assuming a multi-lane road, if it's two lane you may not have that option, depending on oncoming traffic). And not tailgating is important if you need to pass: it gives you more acceleration distance before you leave your lane if there's heavy traffic moving significantly faster in the lane you'll be using to pass, making it easier to find an opening, and, if you're dealing with a two lane road, it gives you a better view around the car in front to see what incoming traffic is doing.

I'm in Canada. At 14, I started asking professionals for help because I thought I might be Autistic. Begged for testing. Pleaded with someone to help me get a diagnosis. I was CONSTANTLY brushed off for "making good eye contact." I'm 21 now and sure enough, my psychiatrist says it's highly likely I'm Autistic, but that he can't diagnose me without proper testing.. It's a goddamn scam, I swear. I'm one of the lucky ones, at that. I'm already in social services. I got diagnosed with ADHD when I was younger. And that might be enough for me to apply for disability. I have the option where I am, that if I go back to school, I can request they screen me for learning disabilities and gets diagnosis paid by SS that way. IF I can ever go back to school, that is. Which is unlikely because I need a therapist who specializes in AuDHD.. which I'm having trouble getting without a diagnosis. But not everyone is as "lucky" as me. And it's infuriating. I wish they would do more to help us. I want to participate in society, but I *can't* play by their rules.

There are people who want to pretend to be disabled (some even purposely disabling themselves), but they are few and far between. They do not have the disability they claim to have, but instead have another disorder that causes them to fake a disability in the first place. The tricky issue with that is sometimes the layman will think they have enough knowledge about the disorder, and likely end up harming truly disabled people when they falsely claim someone is faking. So I guess the answer is "nobody in their right mind, but not everyone is in their right mind". Not even close to being enough people like that to justify cutting spending though!!!

I am a 67 year old art teacher in the UK (retiring at Christmas) and I have recently had a positive diagnosis of autism. There have been a number of things that prompted my suspicions that I might be autistic. My daughter took her own life 5 years ago; she struggled with social anxiety. My mother attempted suicide several times. I heard on the radio that autism runs in families, I read statistics that 1% of the population is autistic and 11% of suicides are among autistic people! We NEED diagnosis. We need understanding. And in most cases we need assistance beyond diagnosis and understanding. I am only now just starting to get to know myself, starting to understand my struggles as a child, my struggles socially throughout my life and in my failed marriage. After my daughter died my grief and guilt were overwhelming. Knowing that I am autistic and that she was almost certainly as well and starting to understand the ramifications is the only thing that has started to give me some sense of relief and self acceptance again. On a different note....and maybe 'out in left field'?... I wonder... This may be naive but I wonder if the Aussie history relating to UK deportation of prisoners could have resulted in higher percentages of autism? As a teacher I have witnessed first hand how a failure to understand young people can lead to 'bad' and even extreme behaviours and labeling by the system. So if historical UK autistics were ending up more 'badly behaved', undiagnosed (obviously) and were more likely to become criminals and were consequently then shipped off... Just a thought... I know I am ignorant of the numbers and the history.... But just a thought.

In the USA they has a system called Social Security Association which states that I would rather live on 1000$ a month rather than work a full time job that would pay me 2400$ a month but I choose not to because I am lazy and not " really" disabled. I'm looking to be diagnosed as autistic, but I'm Bipolar and have been since 2007. Yet no one can explain to these people that you cannot cure Bipolar. It's with me for the rest of my life. I'm 54 yrs old. Any mental health or developmental problem I have would be significantly worse because of my age. Where do they get this information from? If I was well enough to work like other people, I would. I don't want to be disabled and on a fixed income but others want to save money at my personal expense. If you found a psychologist that is $200 an hour you are doing really well these days and psychiatrists are even more. I guess they look at it as you playing the long game, you are taking the chance with spending approx $2000 to get the diagnosis because of the services that you can then get from NDIS will offset that within a year if you get a plan I'm with Orion though, that they think so many psychologists and psychiatrists are on the take that they are willing to diagnose people just so that they can get some home help, psychologist appointments and if you are lucky exercise or OT. Also if those people are so fine then why would they be wanting psychologist and OT (cause it would flag as suss if those services weren't being asked for), other things I could see people wanting for free though.

I suppose the increase in diagnosis has nothing to do with the increase and improvement in knowledge and education of the doctors. (sarcasm) I have very little hope for any diagnosis. At my age there in the US is no help. I'm not self-diagnosing because I f'n WANT to be autistic. However it is the way I AM. It is fortunate that people like you are giving us the access to the information so we CAN sort it out for ourselves. The system certainly isn't even interested in helping us. They want to be able to SAY they support autism, but when the truth is known they do NOT want to actually pay for any actual help. It's all about the money. There is no empathy in the system here. I know how hard you are trying. Keep educating, but don't get your BP up. It's overwhelming. America has plenty, TONS of undiagnosed people. I’ve just got my forms filled for NDIS but only want psych support tbh. I scored a lot higher than I thought and have comorbid ADHD (combined), only diagnosed in May. I’ve got so much trauma caused from my undiagnosed life. Best analogy is imagine being a square shoved into a circle my whole life and not doing to properly, then told “everyone else can, why can’t you”, “you are lying about struggling to do that”, “you’re too smart to not know such a simple task”, and “just try” Honestly, when I found out I was 33, a single mum, had a phd (top of my uni), just taught myself to DJ as I love music, and running events in my city… I realised why I was so sick all the time as I didn’t understand my boundaries and what a meltdown was. My immune conditions have mostly subsided though! The other thing I have asked for is someone to hustle me once a week so I can keep up with normal. Since when I thought things may be this way: I’ve backed away from everything. Moved house twice since I found out. Had 3 jobs. My daughter’s dad has called DCP on me twice when I was just struggling, which is what they said too but I was putting everything into my daughter. @Vexorgthedestroyer
@Vexorgthedestroyer 7 месяцев назад
I think it's important to understand that the term 'self diagnosis' is misleading when it comes to autism. We're not talking about a medical condition that can be easily externally assessed and tested. We're talking about something that is largely, if not almost entirely validated by the perception and experience of the individual. The individuals own experiences are the foundation for 'high functioning' Autism diagnosis, as opposed to guiding the diagnosis process which balances experience with external manifestations. With ASD, there often are no external manifestations of the marked degree exhibited in 'more serious' cases. Those of us who have gone down this road of self discovery, have not done so lightly. It is an existential shift to have to admit that this is who you are, there is no possibility of 'getting better' or 'being normal'. That comes with all the highs and lows of revelation and mourning. On the one hand you're not crazy or stupid, on the other you've wasted a life, and now you have to effectively start over with this new understanding of your limitations. But it's not just starting over, it's the daunting reality of starting over and knowing that there is no support structure for you. There was when you were a defective normal person, but now that you're autistic, you have to keep it to yourself or face a barrage of disbelief, rejection, even disgust that you would use that as an excuse for your problems. Nobody in their right mind would take on this label publicly unless it was the only legitimate way of describing their lifelong experience. So we don't, we go in in secret, and we express ourselves in small, closed community forums like this, where we're safe. The irony is that the people investigating, creating awareness and supporting the autistic community are those who have autism, when it should be the other way around.

@@doctorno3912 Found an ABC article, towards the end they had a breakdown for each state's requirements. Qld isn't the only one, they are the most draconian though Technically it isn't a driving test it is closer to having a medical evaluation and it might have to be a functional assessment with an OT to assess your driving skills (not many OTs that specialise in this so long wait times). The other thing to worry about is that the national Assessing Fitness to Drive standards were updated in 2022 to list autism as a medical condition deemed to have an impact on driving.

@@amandamandamands my mistake and thanks for the clarification/correction in regards to the other states. Personally I don't drive because I have terrible spatial awareness. @@doctorno3912 Yeah I don't drive because of my perspective on the road, I ride a motorbike instead because it is the same width as you so don't have that issue. I figure that if I have been riding for more than 15 years and I haven't had an accident I must be doing something right on the road.

That is crazy! I'd be livid if they did that here in the US. I've been driving for nearly 20 years! I have a good awareness of my vehicle's size and driving itself is fine, I'm, objectively, a rather good driver and have zero problems reversing over long distances. But I get anxious on interstates and higher speeds, and in a lot of traffic. Other drivers are a bit insane around here, though I've seen crazy drivers in other countries and I wouldn't be able to drive in those conditions!

The waitlists are nearly over 2 years in the uk and not everyone understands autism. After that it seems to be just paper because most do not take it into account. Then longer waiting lists for what could make school easier (speech therapists, occupational therapists and educational psychologists) just because someone else’s needs are higher. If anything there should be more diagnoses, plus not a lot of time is spent in educating about children with additional needs and neuro-diversities so a lot struggle academically.

How sad. The British Government has recently said that too much funding is required to support children in schools so there should be a rationing scheme to reduce the numbers assessed as needing support 😢 They didn't even bother to quote a report 😭

I live in a smallish town in regional vic. Thankfully we had a psychologist who could do the assessments. It's not easy and can have a long wait i was waiting about a year and 6 months and it cost me around $1400 aud. You may have to travel and it may pay to put your name down with more than a single psychologist for your assessment. It's a pain in the ass and expensive but worth it in the long run imo.

I feel your frustration! You do what I do when I’m frustrated, rub my face with my hands. My key-worker got me to ask my doctor to get me a referral to an ADHD clinic (I feel I’m inattentive adhd and autistic from my own research), but my doctors didn’t want to spend money. So she wrote a strongly worded letter and finally, I got a referral and put on the list…..a VERY long list. I’ve also been abandoned by the local mental health service, they didn’t take me seriously, they didn’t notice my behaviours. They did diagnose me with CPTSD (due to my childhood and other traumas) depression and social anxiety. My key-worker said that I wasn’t the only one abandoned by the services. It’s bloody hard as it is without these people not even trying to help you. Ah yes, the over explaining and people pleasing.

Not to get into anything too extremist, but Autism/Asperger's is vastly overrepresented amongst White/Caucasian individual and especially men. While almost all other disabilities or unfortunate acts of biodiversity are validated, cared for, or made to be accepted, ASD and Asperger's are widely discriminated against.

Orion, I'm wondering if possibly the cost of providing services to autistic people should be provided directly by the Government (that is, the Government directly employs the service workers) rather than through private agencies who charge additional amounts (such as overhead and profit for the agencies) on top of the salaries for the support workers, which likely significantly increases the costs for these services.
@amandamandamands
@amandamandamands 10 месяцев назад
That is what used to happen, then there was this great initiative that the end users should have a choice in who they see. In between when it was written up and when the start date was we had a change of government, they took away the government option and only left the free market. The NDIA does set the rates that they pay for different services, I don't know how they decide on those numbers though (the price list can be found online). I know that my old OT said that she was paid about 1/4 of the amount that NDIA pays for her service (she works for a company so they get the full amount), so I am sure that a lot of it goes to making a profit for the industry that has popped up to provide the different services.

I was only able to get help after a bone fracture which became a disability. Nothing for all those years of suffering and I have gone through a large number of symptoms both mental and physical. I was in such poor health that a small fracture has permanently disabled me. I do understand a bit of the scepticism because there is such a wide horizon from those that don't speak and self soothe by rocking back and forth for hours a day, to those that are able to manage a yt channel, write a book, and maintain a marriage with kids. I mean that's a wide range of ability. It's makes ppl suspicious about the whole thing. I guess its the difference btween autism as a disease or as a divergence. That's what determines whether or not assistance might be needed. Those that do need aid should be provided an income.

I feel terrible having to say this but there is a part of me that feels that those with higher support needs are able to get support faster and easier than those with lower support needs. It's like either you need a lot of support or you don't need any at all, according to the agencies that determine this shit. I'm also in the USA. Sigh.

@@yeahokaycoolcool I feel you, I live in Australia and am late diagnosed. 13 years ago I was diagnosed with mental illnesses and was looked after by the public mental health team for a couple of years, they never suggested any services for me and actually had a team meeting to decide if they should fill out disability paperwork for me (ultimately decided that they would and it was up to the government and not them to decide if I qualified) as I had been working up until a year before I asked them to fill in the paperwork and they had the mindset that working is one of the indicators of recovery and I was essentially going the opposite way. They never suggested or offered any other services to me, I found a community mental health program and from then learned about all these different programs that existed, a couple of them would have been really useful to me, and then NDIS came in and most programs were defunded because the assumption was that everyone who needed help would be on NDIS. A couple of years later they started funding some programs again because they realised that there are people who do need help but don't have NDIS for various reasons. Totally agree though that the mindset is that if you are high functioning then there is no possible way that you could need support or would be struggling in any way.

I have been trying to think of the ways autism makes life difficult to navigate , the reasons why maybe some are better able to cope than others, and not just focus on things we share so here goes (1) ask or manipulate others into speaking for him (2) avoid leadership roles or competition (I used to cry over board games) (3) have body dysmorphia, fat phobia (4) has an eating disorder and does it get worse with stressful situations (5) if in college has difficulty getting to classes (it was when I learned that student volunteers were walking with autistic students to class that I first wondered if I might be autistic - it was difficult for me to leave my dorm room - I was always there ) (6) is easily startled or some issue with startle reflex, because this can become PTSD with even a mild trauma Just a few things 😅 and some are probably more female than male autistic issues. I was just thinking that anyone suffering like this would have difficulty achieving very much in life. But for some reason there just isn't much sympathy out there even from family. The autistic person doesn't recognize what it all signifies until years later. Those that can stay focused on succeeding and survival I tip my 🧢 to you. The attributes listed (plus any others that are making life difficulty), and their severity should be part of any determination for receiving aid/help /whatever - not only the determination that yes this seems like autism and so what ?
