hahhahahahahahahahahahaha Lanius: legion will conquer everything Courier: [SPEECH] bla bla bla please dont Lanius: on second thought, you are right, we stop
How the actual fuck do you die to Lanius. Psycho, Med-X, a lot of Stimpacks and a Scorched Saturnite Power Fist can kill this guy before you can say “Hey dummy, you don’t got good logistics”.
@@fluorideinthechat7606 back when the game just got out, 12 year old me didn't know how to min-max my character or how to cheese the game. That plus my pride, making me play the game on the highest difficulty before finishing up my first play through, gave me quite the harsh lessons.
Speech 100, INT 1: Me no fight. Me good. You fight, you bad man. Lanius: Somehow your words have touched my heart, Courier. Very well, Im leaving this place. Farewell
Having 100 speech makes up for the lack of intelligence. You can just talk out your ass, and no one will realize. Like a politician. You don’t actually have to know what you’re talking about. having 100 speech means, you can just make stuff up and it’ll sound plausible enough for people to listen. Sounding confident is really all it takes for people to believe you.
I was told throughout the game that Lanius was a monster, a savage beast. He is as monsterous as they said, but he has more class and respect than any Legion member.
Do keep in mind, that his composure roots in his pride. He's absolutely ready to take on you, but he only takes a step back to make sure the next time he'll take you on, will be victorious, hence he's easy to snap at you for mentioning a "retreat" as that would be a sign of weakness. He's a man of pride but also of tactical forethought. If he knows that a battle will bring him and the legion no honor, he's not interested in taking it. I genuinely love the writing of him, as we all can interpret his personality so different, yet we all have the exact same idea of who he really is.
@@Fenrigalo exactly, he's as violent and ruthless as he's portrayed, but he isn't JUST that. He knows when to fight and when not to, he isn't a barbarian but a proper commander. You need tactical and strategical prowess to be Caesar's second, after all
The irony is that Lanius describes it is pretty faithful to how the real Romans waged war, they didn't really have long supply lines, they foraged or acquired what they needed in terms of food and water at the places they were marching to.
@@TheArrowedKnee Bro just said that campaigning legions in the hinterland territories of the Roman empire, a civilization known for its extensive and revolutionary understanding of logistics and the importance of infrastructure, 'didn't really have' long supply lines. My dude, forage and pillage was an essential part of military logistics, but they absolutely had complex supply lines that they primarily relied on to carry the necessary goods to maintain their numbers.
@@TheArrowedKnee May I introduce you to Caesar's accounts (The Proper Roman one) and how he was always on a time limit because his logistics kept getting screwed over?
@@JingMitsuyamaCH I know this is a late comment, but yours really intrigues me. 'Delusional cosplayers' but have they not made a war machine that has united a large swathe of the mainland US?. Sure, they're emulating something, but didnt Caesar emulate Alexander? I guess what i'm asking is would be when does the LARP command some respect? im a little drunk atm
@@lucasriddle5538 dawg most of their opponents have been inbred tribals in the mojave, and when they actually faced an organized force, they were destroyed. They’re delusional cosplayers
Courier standing there saying, "West, East, the West, East the West, West the East the West.." While Ulysees says, "Bear, Bull, Bull Bear Bull, the Bear, the Bull.."... It just gets Lanius every time.
Barter 100: “listen my salesman weekly is gonna run out soon so pay attention. I managed to amass a million caps from farming your legion assassins and then using an ancient technique called jury rigging to repair all the cool shit with the crappy shit. Then selling the loot to various vendors across the Mojave. Not only do I have a virtually infinite supply of caps. But all the vendors have distributed the weapons and equipment with the settlers across towns. However I will not need help from anyone. I’m about to take 14 different drugs, hit you with an explosive .50 shot that will knock you down. And then use a weapon called industrial hand that does 300 dps and ignores your armor. PS that knock down animation takes ages. And 1 of my drugs slows down time. According the official game guide you won’t last 4 seconds. So what’s it gonna be legate?”
The thing is, this approach is only a short-term solution. You may have stopped this attack on Hoover Dam, but you also taught Legate Lanius the importance of logistics, so now he'll go and make extra sure that his supply lines are well-reinforced and not a trace of flimsiness anywhere. Then he'll come back. What this means for the Dam is that they had better get extra serious with their defensive strength if they hope to stand a chance against a reinforced Legion. It's not a long-term solution.
Lanius may come back, but without Caesar holding the legion together, and with the Legion's momentum halted, he most certainly will come back weaker, not stronger. In all likelihood, by the time he arrives at Hoover Dam, the Legion will have fractured so deeply he'd be leading a shadow of the Legion.
He would know logistics, but not culture, or diplomacy. He'd see the Legion crumbling and respond with shows of strength, which would not work for long. Whereas the NCR is decaying, the Legion is a ticking time-bomb. It appears strong, but when the timer hits zero it's going to fall _fast_ . Lanius is so inexperienced with managing the unity of a nation that he doesn't even realise it.
@@thegoodbee9742 Yes, Mr. House had it right when he said that in the short term a Legion without Caesar is still the monster it was with him alive, but in a few months it will fracture and die without his leadership.
@@Fr0st1989 Caesar’s biggest mistake was not reinforcing the Legion’s unity. As Marcus said, the Legion only follows Caesar, not his ideals. Once he is gone, the Legion has nothing to stand for. In the midst of chaos, slaves will rebel. Legionaries will remember their tribal identities, and either desert, or rebel. High ranking Centurions will rush to take Caesar’s throne.
I love how when you bring up the fact that the Legion basically destroyed their best chances at resupply Lanius pauses. As if he's being forced to consider that the slaughter he would have brought would have been equally as pointless. Using barter and finance to utterly break his worldview is so much fun
Fun fact: you can also abuse speech 90 if you have beaten Honest Hearts, Lonesome Road, Kept Ulysses alive, AND talked to him about Lanius by the end, and just bluff the shit out of Lanius. Speech 85 with good or bad karma can convince him to 1v1 you if you fail a speech or barter check
@@-TakingSomeLs Yeah, I did it the cowards way (by mistake). Had Veronica with me with a balistics fist, and challenged him 1v1. She killed him with the power fist before he got to the arena. Technically it was 1v1 as I didn't have to do anything.
Never understood why the Legate accepts defeat like this. Being that Caesar doesn't listen to reason, For the Legate to come back defeated, Regardless of the reason, Lanius would almost certainly meet a similar fate as Joshua Graham
In fact, you can convince him to retreat if you complete Honest Hearts and Lonesome Road by making him learn about Graham mistake: underestimate the NCR until it was too late.
What I think is interesting is how lanius refers to the courier as NCR in that last line, perhaps a quirk of lanius speech pattern, or maybe he recognises with out the Couriers intervention, the NCR wouldn't be able to stand fully against the legion in Vegas.
I presume that was because the players character was idolized by the NCR. My character was more neutral with both the Legion and NCR generally speaking, and he didn't put me in the NCR camp in dialogue. If I'm remembering correctly.
I believe it is because of the soundtrack you use. Maybe you know the other video where the speech option is shown, there they use also the same music.
Don't listen to them about the music being loud. It made this interaction that much more epic. You're waging war with words here. Lives are at stake. Two powerful beings decoding the fate of many lesser yet important beings.
That's what I like about Barter. It feels more natural. I have always felt savage like Legate won't pay heed to philosophical arguments of the Courier. Instead, he has to be reasoned to give up on his plan to take over Hoover Dam.
Wish there was a line where Lanius asked you to come back and explain the same to Caesar himself. This seems like the kind of thing to get Lanius covered in pitch and thrown down a canyon.
Lanius is such a cool character. As brutal as he is, along with Caesar’s legion, he’s smart, and he can see when he’s been bested. He also displays honor in giving the mutual chance for each side to prepare for the eventual battle.
I once did a playthrough of NV where I roleplayed as Hank Hill and this was how I dealt with Lanius at the end because he's a salesman So, try imagining this scene but with all of The Courier's dialogue in Hank Hill's voice.
I wish they made a sequel to New Vegas, but with several storylines depending on which ending you chose in the original. I’d love to see how New Vegas turned out in the aftermath of each faction. I know it’ll never happen. It’s wishful thinking.
give it a couple decades maybe also considering after like 12 years the community is still arguing about how things would turn out i doubt the developers could get it right
@@Spikedog777 All I know is it definitely isn't the Legion. While New Vegas isn't black and white with its factions, it's pretty clear that the Legion is the "evil playthrough" faction. Typically, the good guy options are the canonical endings.
Makes me wonder (if someone has the inhuman saintly nature to leave that man alive after Nipton) if a high enough perception check, when he meets you outside the ToPs (I always screamed out for Nipton in the moment) after Ringa Ding Ding is completed, sees your character being all like, "I've never forgotten a face in a dog head..... _Vulpes?"_
given how much respect he has for vulpes (and for good reason), it's a very understated but huge show of respect that the last thing he tells you in either the speech or barter route is that your intelligence and skills are either on par or _well beyond_ his. nice lil touch and ig a cool lil pat on the back from the game for actually going this route as opposed to killing him outright
caesar : alright lanius, what's the report on the battlefield ? why are you ordering your men to retreat ? lanius : that courier guy was quite reasonable ces, you should hear him caesar : ... caesar : arrest this dude and burn him and throw him into a volcano
The legion will broke into a thousand different factions in no time. That's what happens when you rely on a single person as supreme ruler and he dies.
