I feel like the only person that has loved Alex's humor and blunt honesty since he first started regularly appearing in videos. I literally listen to his opinion more than AJ and OJ. He knows how to correctly critique movies without letting his fandom get in the way.

Dumbledore has a sister because he fought Grindelwald, which ended up killing his sister. Now he has a brother, which kinda doesn't make any sense because it was only mentioned that he had a sister. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald should have had more actual crimes from Grindelwald.

Since when are Aurors allowed to use Avada Kedavra? Isn't it a forbidden curse? But in this movie they throw it around like it was candy?

I don't care whether or not Dumbledore is gay or what, but I wish there was some actual character development and motivation instead of the dumb locket. Just imagine this - Dumbledore is capable of fighting Grindelwald, but is afraid. Afraid that despite being more powerful, his heart would waver at that moment, that he would hesitate, that he would be tempted by the person who he loved (in whichever way you want to interpret that), by the power that Grindelwald offers (after all, we KNOW from the seventh book that he was tempted by power).... and the story makes him face his fears because he realized he's being a coward, or because he sees no other option, and he overcomes a personal flaw in order to do what he believes is right... But no. It's a goddamn stupid locket.

My angry thoughts: Nicholas Flamel was such a waste. Queenie's plot was so dumb. Nagini's character and how she became bffs with Credence was empty. Dumb reason for Tina and Newt affair. Since when did the mirror of erised do flashbacks? What is that book Flamel looked into and who was giving him advice? Ministry of magic dumb af letting aurors go in that rally. Getting wands in the ground is not the action for a "climax" I wanted. Really, thats the most you can do? Who is that French chick Grindelwald with? Unnecessary Corvus plot. Fkucin close ups in the beginning. Newt has an assistant?

Dumbledore and/or his brother killed their sister by accident. And credence has a phoenix which is kinda supposed to add to him being a Dumbledore.

If dumbledore's family was high class.... why was their baby in the third class on the titanic? This plot hole alone destroys whatever reason anything happened

The Alchemist is the one who told the wizards what to do to save everyone from those blue flame dragons. So without him, those dragons go wild. Grendlewald needed Credence to fight Dumbledore because he couldn’t, he literally said that multiple times...

I mean the potential was there but the plot was all over the place, they tried to do to much and didn't do a good job with any of it. Like for a bit I was interested in the LeStrange character, then I got confused. And then I was interested in the Qeeny plot, then I got confused why she did what she did. Then I was interested in the Credence and nagini plot, then I got confused.

Am I the only one who misses the old format for the movie reviews? Not that it matters but I preferred it's simplicity as far as the layout goes. The movie screen isn't necessary- just replace the clips with more theater seats.

Why did Leta go to Hogwarts when she was born in France and was smuggled to America? She literally have no affiliation with Britain and we know there is a school in both France and America! But for some reason she went to Hogwarts and befriended Newt. Even the Lestrange burial tomb is in France.

Tina and newt were going to be killed for less in the first movie, yet grindelwald needs to stand trial? WTF?!

((Not really)) spoilers here... but we know how the pentalogy ends. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Chapter 6, Pages 102-103, Harry reads a card from the back of a chocolate frog: "Considered by many to be the greatest wizard of modern times, Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the Dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945, for the discovery of the twelve uses of dragon's blood, and his work on alchemy with his partner, Nicolas Flamel. Professor Dumbledore enjoys chamber music and tenpin bowling." One can reasonably expect that there will be a battle in a WWII setting involving Dumblebro and Grindeldepp.

Harry Potter is literally a story about a Failed Baby Murder attempt. Child endangerment is part of this universe from the start. Edit- I'm pointing this out not only because of this review, a newish mom on a different site was upset when she heard there was some baby murder involved in new movie. SMH

The real problem with the movie is David Yates, the director. Just like the HP movies he directed, the fantastic beasts movies are horribly directed, weirdly edited, and have terrible pace. It's like he wants to confuse the audiences even more because the plot itself isn't complex enough. And dont get me started on the magic in fantastic beasts. The HP franchise was successful partly because magic was shown in a realistic fashion where you could easily relate to it. In Fantastic beasts, magic feels like you're dreaming, half of the stuff you see is so ridiculous and unbelievable that you just lose that connection plus no context is giving behind the magic, it's like they're making shit up along the way and we're supposed to accept it because magic. That's not how it's supposed to be.

Sounds like Grindelwald used Fiend Fire towards the end which is canonically proven to be very difficult to control, even for powerful magic users like Grindelwald.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a textbook that Harry had in his first year. The real world book is a copy of said textbook, with a special introduction by Albus Dumbledore. Grundlewend was defeated by Dumbledore in 1945. Rowling has said that Griswold's defeat happening at the end of the second world war was not a coincidence. Gruntwhistle himself had very much a "master race" ideology, and it's suggested that he influenced Hitler's actions along the same lines, perhaps indicating that Muggleborn witches and wizards were also victims of the holocaust. Girdleward was wielding the Elder Wand, a mythical artifact claimed to make its wielder unbeatable, but Dumbledore defeats him anyway, perhaps suggesting Guntleweld was caught off guard or was holding back. Before this movie, Dumbledore already had a reason for not wanting to face Girthwang, which was the death of his sister; he did not want to face the fact that either he, his brother, or Goiterwelt had caused her death. Edit: corrected Groinwart's name, I think I spelled it wrong.

I saw the movie today and I had no idea what the story was most of the time but I was able to pick up a little bit. The visuals and magic stuff was pretty cool but everything else felt slapped on with little to no connection.

As a huge Harry Potter fan who grew up with the books and movies, please don't be afraid to call out this travesty of a film for what it is. This movie was beyond frustrating to watch and I wanted to walk out three different times but stuck with it. The whole movie was a trainwreck INCLUDING THE THIRD ACT, let's not tiptoe around the issues. The whole movie sucked. Personally, I'd give the film maybe a 3/10; and it's only really that high because it had some nice visuals.

In the first film they said that an obscurus is someone who "Repressed their magic abilities to an extreme creating a powerful being" but in this one they act like it's the lack of love which has made this monster.

I'm a mega HP nerd and this movie was so inconsistent with established lore that it hurts. Plus they just throw random information in there that makes literally no sense like why Lestrange who was born to a frenchman and smuggled to America went to Hogwarts.

Good review, but man I wish you guys would stop being so generous. If respected reviewers had the courage to call out trash when Hollywood makes it, then maybe we could get better scripts. Jk has no place writing screenplays, that is clear. The first movie was solid, but this was a bunch of convoluted nonsense and badly scripted storytelling exposition. Beautiful effects, locations, good actors, and a dynamic world can't save a movie if the story is absolute trash. Jk should've worked on this for a few more years instead of pulling a Lucas on us. Just came off as a second rate cash grab.

First off, by no means i think this is a masterpiece but i went in with so abyssmal expectations i actually think its ok. Tons of loopholes and it is indeed inconsistent but i see what there are trying to do its just it fails spectacularly. I like how Grindelwald is some kind of wizard Magneto but they didnt do much with him and based on the context the first movie it makes Queenie, Credence, and some other characters seem stupid. I may think its ok but i would not reccommend this unless you can turn off your brain.

The Queenie thing was pretty dumb, but what about the one agent who killed that one grindelwald follower? She goes to pull his wand on him, and he immediately resorts to killing curse, at the same time gristlewald is preaching about the ministry are the violent ones, not them? He could of used expelliarmis or stupify or ANYTHING that could have not killed her. IDK but that was pretty dumb

Leta Lastrange- the girl in the “love triangle” - loves Newt bc he loves... all those creatures/those beasts/those monsters. Lastrange says- “oh newt, you have never met a monster that you couldn’t love.” When? When Leta tells her worst fear/her secret- she was responsible for her half brother dying.

I just think Rowling wanted to reveal stuff in the movie that she didn't put in the books or she thought of it later and put it in the movie

(The goal of the ministry is to kill Credence, because just like Harry, Credence is part of a prophecy that inspires the rebellous purebloods. The ministry already proved they can walk into Hogwarts and legally curse Albus. If Albus finds Credence, the ministry will kill him) 1.Credence was revealed to be an OBSCURUS. Which means he spent his life choking out his own magical identity. Newt was trying to convince Credence of a different path at the end of the last movie (if memory serves me correctly). The Obscurus, Credence, did not die at the end. . .he fled. The reason why Credence is so driven to find out who he is because he is an Obscurus. To find out who he is, to embrace is, is the opposite of what makes an Obscurus. 2. Crazy Cat Lady. The thing to keep in mind here, is that every time you see a green flash, it is from the killing curse. One of the three unforgivable curses. In the Harry Potter timeline...these spells will land you in prison. What did you see this ministry of magic using? The killing curse. They even have an assassin in this movie. The cats, were called spirit familiars. Newt said, the moment the creatures appeared, that they are what the ministry uses as security. AND, he also said, they only attack when attacked FIRST. Which they were. 3. Grindelwald's wand is the elder wand. The wand, which according to legend was created by Death itself, that bestows immense power to the spells cast with it by its owner. To be its owner you have to kill its previous owner, as explained in the original movies. I'm not going to go and analyze everything brought up, but to whoever reads this: The movie does explain itself rather well.

Pretty much agree with everything said here, there are a lot of plot holes. My personal favorite is when Newt and muggle friend talk to Creedence's "relative" whom they KNOW talked to Tina and WHERE he talked to her, but when they meet him he goes, "yes, I think I saw a woman like that, let me show you where I think I talked to her." They already know that information but listen to him anyway! Also this quickly turned into a 'member movie when they show off Hogwarts and only the little kids are sticking their heads out of the windows, Lita goes gallavanting around the school in all these one-off shots just to reach a desk, etc.

JOE you guys should review widows if you can (go into it with an open mind though it’s a more artsier movie than the trailers lead on but it’s still fantastic) it’s a female heist movie that gives oceans 8 a run for its $$$

Damn I really enjoyed the movie till u pointed out all these good story flaws... to be fair the beginning prison break was awesome, and the old alchemist was cool, the creatures were cool, the fat guy is funny as always tho not as many jokes as the last movie... I think this movie seemed a bit fast because it's a transition to the 3rd movie... a little weird for a Johnny Depp film, the beginning was epic tho EPIC

Yah, I had a feeling that J.K. had gone too far away, and a little to full of herself. It's too bad, she use to write good stories, then again...most of Harry Potter didn't make sense, and it has a lot of plot holes, so I don't expect much from her these days.

actually Dumbledore's sexuality wasn't reveled until the books had all came out (and I think the movies on the 5th film) so it was one of those half ass attempts of making a character be gay but not really in the material that people first experienced them in.

Am i the only one who likes this movie? Even my brother likes it alright, and he kind of didn't even want to see it. I was worried when i saw the awful action scene in the beginning, but it won me over later on. Sure, there's a lot here, many characters should have been cut out of the movie, more specifically the snake lady, Newt's assistant, and Nicolas Flamel (although i believe all of them, safe for the assistant, will play roles in movies to come), Queenie should have been less stupid, and some minor things could have been cut out to save time, but overall i think the movie was completely fine. Give it a bit more color and better lightning, and it would be pretty good! In fact, i think i prefer it over the first one. There's less filler here, and the story is better. It has more mystery elements and it's more impactful. Also, with a bit of concentration, it's definitely possible to follow the plot. People are either stupid, lazy, or overreacting in that regard. Furthermore, it actually has good fan service (!), not like that Han Solo trash. I think Phantastic Beasts is better than the Hobbit movies, which are similar in concept, and i'm actually looking forward to more of it, which can not be said for Star Wars. Five movies overall though is definitely too much. They should end it with the third.

This film felt like a fanfiction come to life. The first movie was good, but this one felt awful. It seemed like a bunch of stuff was cut out and so you are just constantly lost as to what's going on. You don't even really know newts famous until the end of the movie. They ruin spell casting by transformerizing it, they Michael bay-Ed it. I hope the third one is good because this one sucked.

I’m a HUGE Harry Potter fan, to the point where I’m a member of the HP Fan Club at Penn State, and I don’t like this series. The magic throughout these films feels awful and very convenient to the plot and makes NO SENSE. The characters are pointless and the ONLY redeeming quality of this series is the inevitable face-off between Gristlebrand (lol) and Dumbledore. Also, I’ve read the series 9 times and I don’t understand the twist at the end AT ALL. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to read my rant :)

Me as a hard core HP fan I am fucking disappointed in this shit. Disappointed in the movie, disappointed in WB and disappointed in JK Rolling. She always seemed to me like a nice, humble women. The HP story was so lovely and macigal, and very very deep. It was about friendship and love. And it came with many freaking brilliant mysteries (like Neville possibly being the chosen instead of Harry). Nowadays it seems like JK Rolling is just the same greedy person (sorry) whoring for money, like everyone else in Hollywood. That disappoints me the most. She betrayed Harry Potter.
