I was going to draw everything in red pen, but then thought better of it. Note to emphasise: I'm not claiming I've got the flows around the sidepod right (or really any flows 100% right), this is just my best guess. These flows are complex, and sometimes unpredictable and counter-intuitive. I hope the analysis is still insightful!

Tip: the pen is great tool for explaining but maybe play with the opacity, like having 90% instead of 100% and after drawing the main flows switch to 50%.. That way the most important part, the main flow is always visible.

Also the whole front nose / wing section is modular : instead of a single detach point from the chassis, it seems to have two independent segments. It’s believed the crash validated element ends with the first segment, then the « tip » of the nose can be swapped for newer spec parts without needing a whole new crash test each time
@nicolaromanelli3321

It is indeed like that. It cuts on costs, time and it even has an advantage on the modularity and modulability of the front of the car. That's one clever solution that a lot of teams will implement in the near future, in my opinion.

Huge fan of your channel. As an FSAE alum who LOVES all the technical details in F1 design that by in large are all hush-hush, your channel and to some extent Giorgio Piola's books are the only sources that get into the details at the level I like. So keep up the great work as I know this has to take a lot of effort/work, even for someone as proficient and knowledgeable in CFD/race car design as yourself. I'm fairly sure I know the answer to this, but are you ever going to be allowed to do a discussion on some of the design features of the Mercs you worked on? I realize you probably have a NDA of some sort and even if it is expired I wasn't sure if it's considered "taboo"/frowned upon to go into the design features beyond surface level. As I'd also imagine you're probably still close with a fair amount of people on the team and wouldn't want to upset them.

Kyle, I want to thank you for your in-depth analysis of these cars. It's so refreshing to hear somebody with the knowledge required to actually explain in detail what is potentially happening by an aerodynamic point of view, instead of what other medias write. I get that not everyone is in love with the technical side of motorsports, but I see a general lack of focus on technical articles; not that I'm an aerodynamics phenom (unlike Kyle), but if you have nothing to say...why talking? I think I read the words "aerodynamic concept" at least 1000 times, without anything substantial being told.

When I first saw the nose I was thinking that they may have made the wing less sensitive to yaw angle changes. Then after seeing the T tray portion I'm more leaning towards them accepting less downforce on the nose in order to condition the air to the T tray. As for the side pods, maybe they're feeding as much air to the beam wing in an effort to drive the diffuser harder. Could be waaay off, who knows. Either way, without a doubt this is the most interesting car so far

With the packaging, I think: Ferrari, AMR and Sauber AR appear to be going make or break. Ferrari have taken this some what to logical extreme. This is the long sidepod/milk bottle? packaging. McLaren, Haas, Williams and Mercedes have gone conventional but Mercedes have taken this to the the logical extreme and Williams with the more radical interpretation. This is the short side-pod/coke bottle packaging. I am not sure how to explain AT and RBR, their downwash solution is not fully understood by me. This is like an intermediate packaging? I expect Alpine to take the long sidepod or downwash approach.

FTA (for the algorithm) I have nothing interesting to comment, but I love the vid and want more people to see it, so I'm commenting FTA. Thank you so much for your detailed analysis of every car and sharing all your knowledge with us.

In my opinion, these are the best looking F1 cars in a long time. Lets hope they make for some good racing too.

Sidepods, cooling air louvres would be venting air at a different temperature to the clean air flowing over the main intake, this would allow the hot cooling air to spill into the divet low pressure area, keeping the ‘clean, air flowing over the top toward the rear wing

Hello! I have a question for you. Do you think the 2018 Merc or the 2018 Ferrari was the faster car??? I would much appreciate the answer! Great video btw, love it

Another great analysis, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. It's certainly a very interesting car, I fear it will prove to be too adventurous but time will tell.

While not an indication of performance. I think one can glean from these analyses who has put more or less time (fabrication limits notwithstanding) into their concepts. Ferrari would seem like a team that has put in the most time in that regard.

Thanks for your excellent explanations and visualization. I am watching multiple of those videos from Scarbs and others and although they are all good resources and do also a very nice job, no one else apart from you could explain those things in such a way that I kind of get the grasp and think I can follow somewhat the design ideas and motivations of those concept. I never would say, that I really truly understand what is going on here, but what you are doing is to bring me as close as it is possible for a newbie to understand such things. Great work!

Absolutely mind-numbing that such small details actually make a difference. Crazy to understand how aerodynamics work.

When I first saw the Ferrari I said ok beautiful car but will it be fast? I didn't know if the undercuts beneath the sidepods would be enough but your explaining does a lot in convincing someone like me that this might be a title contender. Great series of videos so far and I can't wait for your take on the W13 (both the stream and render versions perhaps?).The silver arrow looks quick and tight.

Did you watch to the end of the video? He made it crystal clear that with the information he had available, there is no way to tell whether the car will be fast or not.

Do you plan on a video where you compare a few elements across the teams and telling us why they might have different approach here and there?

👍 Can you also add a few less-technical comments in your videos? Like this improves this, that makes the car do that, This makes the car corner faster, this reduces drag etc. Or also give after the technical explanation also a simple explanation of what actually is achieved through a specific part or flow

This car reminds me so much of the F2012 car, it was so different in regard to design to the others, and I absolutely loved the look of their 2012 car, and I love this car!!!

If I have a vote, I vote for F1 updates analyses for the next content, if you feel like it, of course. fyi,, half a million people a bit like me, might very well enjoy them! Thanks ;)

How these teams come up with such different concepts and all come within half a second of each other over a lap at 150mph blows my mind

Not only is it beautiful but its nice seeing a car thats so different from everyone elses design. Cant wait to find out where in the pack it ends up. I really wish i could see how the air comes over the side pod. Definitely a large vortex being created i just cant wrap my ahead around the reasons why. I do feel like they've done something very clever to stall some components at high speed.

It was exciting whilst watching this series that as I am someone who doesn't have much knowledge on aero design and bodywork, I was able to say THEY HAVE A DOUBLE T-TRAY when I saw it :D :D

Great content. Very interesting, well explained. Thank you very much. Keep up the good work. As a Ferrari fan with no understanding of aerodynamics, I almost had a heart attack when I first saw those massive side pods. Your explanation will let me sleep happily until the first qualifying session 😂 . I really hope to see a great championship this year with many teams taking the fight to the wire. May the best team win!
