Fiery Joker Reacts To: Gaara Vs Toph 

I know folks are upset about the outcome, but sometimes you just gotta accept it and say, "Toph Break."

Actually, in The Last Airbender (and The Legend of Korra), there are several moments where Toph either destroys or redirects sand, mud and other forms of earth despite them being airborne. Even without that extra detail from the DVD, the show itself has evidence to support the idea that Toph can see any piece of earth, even if it's not on the ground, and assume control of it.

I saw in the comments of the death battle video that a lot of people were saying that speed was a big factor. They mentioned that you'd have to move almost at the speed of sound to be able to dodge or get away from Gaara's sand. Even if Toph could anticipate Gaara's attacks and see them coming, would she be able to effectively dodge them in the heat of the battle? Apparently Death Battle thinks she could. Personally, I like Toph and WANTED her to win but.. I felt like Gaara should have. I feel like it really could have gone either way. I'm too nice to pick a side ha.

I mean...The ability to sense Earth even if it isn't on the ground really does make sense if you think back to the show. Kinda explains a lot. Maybe one day an Anime character will actually win...Maybe one day

Toph can indeed sense where earth is even in the air. Its 'official' even if you discount the 'word of god.' Remenmber one of her favored attacks is to levitate huge boulders and send them flying through the air at her opponent. How could she do that unless she knew exactly where the boulders were when she levitates them? Unlike Naruto, the characters in the Avatar verse don't feel the need to exposition every detail of their attacks while they're happening, so somethings have to be taken from the actual hapenings on screen. The in-air earth sense seems one of the most obvious, since Toph ahs done floating-boulder attack a great many times in the show.

I knew Toph would win when they started talking about what she could do. Yes sand was a challenge for her at first but she was able to do some very interesting things with it. Also I don't think the fact that she can sense vibrations in the earth even when it's not contented to the ground was the key factor. That was Gaara's abilities when compared to Toph's. He can control sand and it is powerful and deadly, but Toph has mastered earth, mud, and metal (that gold dust). And she can turn sand into stone. To me it was obvious who the winner was going to be.

Honestly people are just butthurt cause the character they like or thought would win didn't. Just like in Goku vs Superman, I knew it would come down to whether ki counted as magic or not.

I'm agree with Toph winning, but I feel like they should have made Gaara put more of a fight in the video.

Josh...the whole being able to sense earth even in the air thing wasn't just word of God. The block of text they showed when they brought that up was from a special showing of the episode where the creators put little tid bits of info that either related the scene to another episode or in this case gave info that wasn't originally stated in the show but was what they intended. I understand why you didn't know this as it wasn't a very publicized bit of info, only really being shown off in that text box. I just wanted to clear that up.

4:12 Don't thank Death Battle, thank Gaijin Goombah, who probably gave them the info long before they found out. Also, as for me, I still watch Death Battle, even if I don't always agree with the result for both the banter between Boomstick and Wiz, and the matchups between opponents. Plus the voice acting's hysterical! I could listen to Deadpool breaking the fourth wall all day between him and Deathstroke!

Understandable why you may think that the little quip about Toph being able to sense earth in the air even if it's not connected to the ground, but take a look at that very episode the info was given on. The guy she was fighting _figured out_ she could see through connection with the ground and jumped up before he tossed his projectiles at her, and she still wasn't having it. Plus, on the "assault" on the Earth King's palace, there were two telling opportunities that gave more credence to this idea. She could sense the "surface to air rocks" and helped accordingly. But then when the Dai Li sent out stone fists against her, she was able to easily smash them in the air. She is able to sense specifically earth in the air. And maybe metal, but that would still be harder (though even when asking Sokka where the nearest airship was in the four-part finale, she didn't even wait for him to answer before launching them into the air near-perfectly onto the ship). Gaara's greatest strength became Toph's greatest strength against him. And before anyone says that "speed is a factor," Toph-... Oh, well then, guess I'm a bit late on stopping those comments. Well, in LIGHT of you naysayers talking about speed, Toph never actually dodged or evaded any of the sand projectiles. She sandbent those away. She didn't need her speed because she had mastery over all Earthbending arts. She used the shell encasing his body as a form of Gaara's own Sand Burial. I knew that Toph was going to win, but...I still wish they had Gaara give much more of a fight. I can understand why he lost, but the fight seemed wholly in Toph's favor, so they should have either changed a couple things in the fight itself, or added to it with more of Gaara's strengths. That way there's a visual representation that gives more credence (despite them calculating the winner before ever animating the battle itself). Just to add to the flair. And Josh, your reactions were priceless, especially at the part-that-shall-not-be-named. I had to stop the video and go shake my head a bit to get that info out of my head enough for me to function, it just...wigged me out xD;

Fun fact about myself: I am actually blind in one eye, the right eye to be exact, from birth due to a rare disease called sterg weber syndrome and another called glock homa. Because of this I really grew to love toph as she inspired me to look beyond my disability and turn it into a strength. Now I have a heightened sense of smell, sight in my remaining eye, touch, taste and hearing. However this also comes with it's own down sides: with the sight boost in my remaining eye I more quickly loose it so I need glasses, the sound booster is great for locating people and their next moves but it also means I'm like a dog with high pitch sounds, I can hear them and they hurt, my smell booster is really a pain in the butt if I get a wif of something terrible like rotten food or something, and with touch it's like a snake slithering on hot coals or in a frozen tundra if I don't have the right gear. I manage to live with the ups and downs but sometimes I feel like I'm a bit too heighten.

Sorry, but I have to go with Gaara on this one. Toph can't take a single hit or she's going to lose, sand in the bloodstream means Gaara just has to shred her organs with the particles. That Metalbending armor trick? Desert Funeral / Sand Burial makes it an IRON MAIDEN. The pressures invoked by the crush are comparable to that of the Marianas Trench's seafloor... or possibly the core of Jupiter. Another factor is attitudes. Toph likes to play around, Gaara is always serious. If Toph starts the fight with intent to kill, he's going to annihilate her immediately. Suna needs their Kage, after all.

I'm not a Naruto OR an Avatar fan, but I watched all sorts of stuff with both characters before the battle and the result pissed me off. If Toph was on the same level as Gaara, she'd win. But Avatar's characters are not on the same level. They're not as fast or as durable or as strong as Naruto characters. Rock Lee had to go faster than the human eye could see to get past Gaara's sand barrier.

The main problem I have with that "sense Earth anywhere" detail for Toph is this; even if she can sense the earth and know the attack is coming, she has to physically REACT to it in order to bend it and prevent attacks from going through. They even stated that Gaara's sand can travel so fast, only someone going faster than the speed of SOUND can outrun it. Considering they were in remotely close quarters (lets say 100 feet from each other tops) The speed of sound would carry the sand to her in one tenth of a second, that's FAR faster than the human body can react to any type of external source, considering Toph would have to know where the attack is coming from, how large it is, and how to bend it to prevent it. It just bugs me that these Death Battles keep pulling the "well this person had NO CHANCE because of this ONE FACTOR that we say trumps everything!"

Man I hate it when people make up lies saying screwattack hates anime it's sad and pathetic real -__- (I still believe gaara should have won but screwattack bring up good reason why toph won I still don't agree with it but I still respect it)

Word of God or not, it IS an official canonical source provided by the creators of the show themselves, demonstrated on-screen to boot. I know this is old, but I had to get that out there.

I love this death battle. I'm a fan of both characters so It was difficult to choose who would win. they made some good points though. unlike Gaara, Toph is not susceptible to being weakened with lack of chakra. give her earth and she will move it and her exhaustion doesnt affect the strength or speed of her bending whatsoever.

I totally agree with your opinion Josh. This is a really close fight and I thought Garra would've won if it weren't for a few things. The ability to sense the opponent reaction as such(like Spider-Man's spider sense). Including in the air was one. The other lies in the magnitude of Garras' sand skills. I think that was somewhat underestimated and would've turned the tide completely. No puns included just my opinion.

The earth sense IS an official detail. The creators of the show made it so, and you can observe that very fact many times during her fights.

That detail should count because we see many times in the show where Toph catches or stops earth coming at her in mid air like the Dielee and their rock hands so the only reason it would make any scents is if she could see the earth in the air, she has also blocked fire and water in the air so she must have some scents of where things are in the air

Strangely enough, my favourite reactions from you was when you figured out who the voice actors were. As for that little detail, the way I see it, as long as it's from an official source and there's evidence to back it up (Earth Rumble 4 being the case), I'd say it's reliable.

I always laugh when they reveal Tophs ability to sense the earth even not connected to the ground when, in the first episode, we see her dodging earth bending and catching rocks being thrown at her through the air with immense precision.

By the way Mr. Scorcher the behind-the-scenes extras were added to the original episodes, and they were aired separately to give The Last Airbender a final breath before moving on to Korra.

Smell the butthurt in the comment section. Smells like... Victory. Here's my argument to toph should win: AVATAR AND KORRA ARE BETTER SERIES THAN NARUTO AND SHIPPUDEN. If you deny it, then you really need to work on your critical thinking skills.

That sensing is a valid official trait but it shouldn't have been the deciding factor. Just like we can sense fire when it's near us due to the heat, Toph can sense earth. This does not mean she knows what it's doing, is fast enough to react to it, nor can she use her sonar-like sense using earth she isn't touching. She just knows that there is earth there. Gaara surrounds his battles in sand and uses sand clones out the wazoo. There is no way Toph should've known what is going on to the degree that death battle is insinuating.

The funniest part for me was that when I discussed this with a friend, I brought up the aerial sight thing and showed the clip from the show to prove it. We both decided to let death battle choose if it counted or not, but even more hilarious, the last thing I asked him before was "If Gaara loses, how much will people complain that 'ANOTHER ANIME CHARACTER LOST!'" This is not to spite anyone, I just wanted to laugh at how sometimes your sarcastic comments actually become a thing. The fight was a lot of fun too, very flashy, epic, and that finale gives me a shivers. Hope everyone else enjoyed it too!

Personally josh, I haven't watched death battle in a long time because I think after a few episodes things just became ridiculously stupid and instead of providing factual evidence to the fights, they start just using stupid known things that THEY think will decide the battle. Example: Buu Vs Kirby. Their argument was that Kirby can eat anything and can copy so therefor he should win. Do they even have any idea how fast characters in DBZ move? Buu could've literally just obliterated Kirby inside and out faster than you could've blinked. Just my opinion but I'm glad you uploaded this. It gave me something to watch and think on since I got nothing to do at the moment.

this was a pretty good battle, and I LOVED the animation. nothing will ever top Kirby vs Majin Buu, though. That one was amazing.

If I remember correctly earthbending doesn't really drain you energy when you use it, unlike jutsu that is solely based on ones energy. So I feel that could have been a factor too.

I accept the reason Toph won due to the logic of idea explaining how she was able to stop the earthbender coming at her tarzan-style, minus the famous yell. Through the rock she knew his location. Also in the battle Gaara doesn't use the flying ability much because according to death battle rules, he doesn't know how she sees, thus neutralizing his using that trick even if she didn't have the mentioned ability,

That detail was probably put in because they probably wanted to be sure they had all the details and didn't want to miss anything important but I could be wrong on that

4:03 It doesn't take an expert in japaneese folklore to find out about the whole tanuki-scrotum thing. Heck there's even a Studio Ghibli film called Pom Poko about tanuki who use their testicles to perform magic arts and such. They hillariously try to sensor it out in the english dub by called it their "racoon pouch" (even though they aren't racoons, they are racoon dogs).

That little detail about Toph sensing Earth that's not connected to the grounds is official. The show's creators confirmed it, and all official sites consider it canon. Besides, the clips that ScrewAttack used to demonstrate Toph's abilities show her using that ability, even if it wasn't outright stated that she was doing that as would have been done in most anime.

Going into Deathbattle I thought Gaara had this won up until I found out about two things. 1. Toph can alter sand to stone (and back) at will. 2. Gaara had Goldust in his Gor (no not the wrestler but then again would you be surprised if he hid in there) from his father.

The fact that Tpph can feel the earth has many proves. Even in that scene they showed, you see her effortlessly catch 2 rocks, thrown by a guy that wasn't connected to the ground. Both the guy and the rocks were mid air when the guy set a course for his projectiles. At that moment, if Toph only had seismic sense, she would not have known from which side and how fast they were coming. Yet, we see her not put up defenses to catch attacks from all sides, but we see her facing a specific way and PERFECTLY times her move and catches them MID AIR. If she wasn't able to sense earth, there is no way for her to do what she did there. Also, Toph isn't the only bender that can do this, pretty much every bender can sense their respective element. Katara and Aang have bended water that was underground. They didn't see it, yet could feel and manipulate it. Water benders effortlessly bend water that is behind them or at their sides, without hqving to look. Airbenders bend air all around them when using there circular moves, without having to see them. Toph does the same with her element. This is how benders control how much of their element they bend, it is a mental process as much as it is physical. Toph is just more in tune woth it because she relies more heavily on it and utilizes it every waking moment. There are also many other examples of Toph reacting to rock projectiles that were thrown without being connected to the ground. This is a proven feat with concrete proof. So no, it is not "the word of God". It is a well established fact in the Avatar universe and Toph isn't unique in this attribute. In that behind the scenes blu-ray, it was highlighted just to remind people that benders could do that. There is jo denying it. It is a proven feat demonstrated by many benders, including, bit not limited to, Toph.

People are arguing about Toph's seismic sense, but since the actual physical strength of avatar characters isn't really that far from peak human, I'm pretty sure the shockwave from sand moving near the speed of sound would be enough to cause catastrophic injuries even if she blocks it (due to the force transferred directly onto her limbs through her bending).

I believe the thing about gaara encasing himself in sand is a HUGE deciding factor, I have stated this many times before but the majority of Anime fans are too caught up by flashy attacks and techniques to actually see it as a legit factor. somewhat if gaara held of madara or and other powerful characters, it still doesn't negate the fact that he covered himself in sand and fought someone who could use it. screwattack also didn't mention that gaara is the ONLY one in the naruto verse that has used sand in a fight or at all, so gaara never had the experience of facing someone else with a similar fighting style. toph on the other hand has. she fights other earth slinging people on a daily bases so gaara really wasnt much of a threat in the beginning that, and if u encase yourself in your enemies weapon then u lose, point blank the end

They forgot to mention that Gaara's chakra is a limited pool, whereas Toph's bending could be done (hypothetically) for days on end. Had Gaara been drawing from an energy pool as deep as Toph, the fight wpuld have easily lasted much, much longer.

Only point I think DB forgot to include was their physical traits. I know that in both shows they have incredible strength and endurance, but in the naruto world they are extremely fast whereas in avatar they usually have limits. I'm sure they considered this point but why they left it out has me clueless because it is a big difference and might have had gaara survive longer to pull out more tricks to entertain us.

Oh hey look, Death Battle made another mistake when judging an anime character. Remember back when they were judging Goku's statistics at the end of Goku vs Superman, and they got it completely wrong because they judged Goku based off of earlier parts of the show instead of the end. Well now they forgot to take into account how they said that Gaara's sand was faster than the speed of sound.

For the sense earth even if it isn't connected, I think the best proof of that comes in the promise comics. Toph is in Appa, flying high above her academy, jumps out, and earthbends a giant slide up to catch her. No way she could have done that if she wasn't able to sense earth that she isn't connected to.

I will say this much. Gaara should win due to the insane speed of his sand period. He blocked and explosion with his sand as it was happening. An explosion moves at speeds from 2000 - 8000 m/s at detonation depending on the grade and how much of the explosives there are. He was both able to react to it as the explosion was happening right in his face and block it with his sand. That is a mach 7 feat. Can anyone here say that Toph could even react to something moving 7 times the speed of sound? Even if she could see it coming with her seismic sense her body would not be able to move fast enough to do anything about it.

Even though it was a factoid in a BTS extra, it was an official BTS extra. So yeah, it's canon. However, Toph has proven in the show that she can sense earth in the air, like in the beginning of the Dai Li battle in "Lake Laogai" when Toph dusted rock fists out of the air. You know, as well as I do, battles can be won or lost by one overlooked detail.
