Filmmaker William Rouse returns to Gamology to react to the gorgeous cinematics of the cult RPG, Star Wars : The Old Republic. This time, William talks about the power of lightsabers lighting a scene, the use of color in cinema, the slow motion technique, symbolism, storytelling within a 5 minute trailer, mood and the power of "Show, don't tell". Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based in the Star Wars universe. Developed by BioWare Austin and a supplemental team at BioWare Edmonton, the game was announced on October 21, 2008.

The storytelling was so good in this game that I played it over and over with different characters and choices just to see how it all played out. It made me quit when they made everything pay to play.

When he said “anytime you’re trying to connect with a character in a movie or tv show, you gotta see their eyes”. That statement couldn’t be more true. That’s why everyone fell in love with the clone wars. What we previously saw as an army of people who looked exactly the same and were bred for fighting, now had complex personalities which is what made the show so interesting. Great to see this game again after so long.

I thought there was too much talking in that one without the talking you get masterpieces of story telling like the one with the twins, but with talking you get whats calling telling instead of showing. You always wanna show more than tell because showing is far more powerful storytelling.

Blur studios fckin ruuuules they make so many incredible CG trailers and even made a couple episodes for love death and robots. One of the best CG studios ever.

Can the special forces experts react to the army of two the devils cartel? It is a very complete game in my opinion towards coverage, shooting, simultaneous entries, perhaps not so much the recoil of the weapons but there are also many campaigns with different missions and injections of adrenaline, they could take many videos of this, in addition to the fact that the weapons from that game are great

Personally I'd love to see them react to all the Army of Two games. Especially the "FUCK IT" weapon customization of 40th Day. Just shove an AK barrel on an AR with a coathanger as a stock, why not? Don't forget the Underbarrel Shotgun.

Honestly, that battle for Alderaan trailer got me so hyped to play Trooper before the game came out. The way he was being bombarded with lightning but was still gonna shank Malgus, and then detonated a grenade after the knife was knocked away! That's so badass!

@@filippauljohnson6924 I wouldn't say it's better than the OT, but it is definitely overall better than the sequels. The Prequels definitely had some good cinematic moments (mainly the opera scene in RotS and pretty much any shot after Anakin falls to the Dark Side). Unfortunately the dialogue wasn't up to snuff.

@Gamology Not sure if he is aware but the planet in the Hope cinematic is Alderaan, the planet that gets blown up by the Death Star in Star Wars Episode 4. This game along with a brief scene at the end of Episode 3 are the only times you actually ever see Alderaan.

One of the few examples of the shaky cam being used correctly. Too many times it just goes everywhere and I can't see anything. Moving the camera along with the action gives certain movements more impact. Even when it just shakes for tension only it is only slightly so you can still clearly see the cinematography.

That’s because usually it’s being used to hide bad choreography or make actors that don’t have any martial arts experience look good. The difference between a Jackie Chan movie and a Jason Bourne movie is Jackie Chan knows how to fight.

@@producerjuan5850 Yeah that's very true. It is often used to cover up for poor choreography. There are times though that it seems like a really good fight but they still do the shaky cam for some reason. Like the fight with captain America and Bucky in the winter soldier. It seemed pretty cool but its so hard to ignore the camera spasming out.

Yeah but when the guy actually saw real gameplay footage you can tell that it needed camera shake because the action looked too static with little sense of motion.

What's even more true is that the trailer oversell the game so hard... everything is epic in the trailer but the the gameplay is just two or more dudes waving lightsabers around with no actual contact between the two and the characters are extremely still. If anything I'd want to play the game the trailers are selling me and it makes it look more like an action game than an MMORPG. Imagine this with gameplay from Jedi Fallen Order, that'd be sick. I hope the upcoming KOTOR Remake bring these modern features in.

Its not really overselling anything did you really think games looked that good back in the early 2010s? Thats because pre-rendered content (trailers) are far easier to run with higher graphics quality on computers than content in real-time which is what holds it back. Granted, the gameplay could have still have looked better even though the game was released in 2011.

Here is the thing though... I have been in IT for 40+ years. Wanna know the best game I ever played? The Hobbit on Commodore 64. Well that and Among The Stars TrekMush. Let me explain, the hobbit on C64 was a completely text based game. No gfx really to speak of. Why was it the best game, because you had to imagine the graphics. You had read the books by Tolkien that provided additional insight and descriptions/details. And then you sat down and re-lived the story from your imagination. ATS was the same, an user made Star Trek universe, everything described in detail via text, and you filled in the blanks with your imagination. Both of these were some of the most immersive games ever because of that. ATS even had the added bonus that because it was text it was far more open and those playing it could actually help build the world (thanks to the simplicity of text and the game mechanism that allowed players to add to the world new things from scratch). No games right now can match them, because with the amazing graphics come story limitations. You can only choose some predefined options and paths. It's a pity new players never got to see that.
