***** I honestly felt like every character in Bravery Default was paper thin; they were so predictable they were caricatures of themselves. Their internal struggles were so transparent, their actions so typical, it didn't even allow a suspension of disbelief. Maybe my expectations are a little high. I don't want to say I'm looking for a "type" of game, because I think that unnecessarily narrows the scope of creativity. I can offer an example though: I just recently played through Persona 4, and despite being a little juvenile, I really enjoyed it. The characters are ordinary but stay interesting, they're virtuous but have flaws, they're quick to judge but constantly reevaluate themselves - just like most kids in high school. I thought the pampering of ego to the main character (the player) was a little over the top, but it's not like I'd prefer the game to call me a loser who never gets laid. I thought it was a great game. I just want characters that are interesting and believable. I'd even settle for one or the other in most cases, but the characters in this game are neither. The quantity of made up words is not directly correlated with the quality of the story. This video makes a great reference to Tolkien - if you're going to burden the reader/player with a lexicon of story-specific, fantasy, terminology, it better be worth it.

I think the only thing that can save Final Fantasy at this point is one simple rule: No More Fucking Teenagers. That's it. All characters have to be above the age of 20 (with maybe one little kid thrown in for variety's sake.) A non-teenager plot would have no kawaii moe girls or coming of age bullshit. It would have to rely on an actual plot with mature people (most of whom are mature enough to shop for clothing at a decent store instead of at the Asymmetrical Hot Topic that most Final Fantasy characters have been shopping at recently. ) I know I sound like an oldster yelling at clouds, but I doubt many of the people who grew up with Final Fantasy can relate to the vapid skankoids who populate the games these days (and who seem to only appeal to the ephebophiles on the Square Enix staff.) When Rikku donned that string thong in FFX-2, I knew the game would be plunging into a spiraling toilet drain from which it would never emerge. Sad.....

It seems like the bigger games the less interesting the worlds get. The only two RPGs in recent history to actually make me want to learn about their worlds are Monster Hunter and Bravely Default. Because instead of shoving a wall of dialogue in my face to try and engage me through its "well crafted" world they simply said "hey your here now play" while also giving me the option to learn more if I wanted to. Devs need to learn that engagement with the game must come before the shitty story because then I might just care about the world being pushed onto me like a hillbillies daughter that got pregnant.
A well crafted story is a way to engage you in a game. The two often go hand in hand, especially when the game in question is, when you get right down to it, a fifty hour+ long grind fest. For me personally, there is nothing that gets me more disinterested in a game then having the developers drop us in the middle of an open field saying "Well here you go......have at it." We always need SOME form of background information to start us off. Why would anyone want to explore more of the world and its history if the developers don't start us off with something interesting to whet our curiosity? The issue isn't the focus on story. The issue is the lack of coherence in the narrative. They throw a barrage of new fantasy words and places at the player, but neglect to go into what these new terms and phrases are supposed to mean to the player.
DevilHunter1994 You make a good point but let me be clear because I feel I wasn't at first. I want an excerpt of what I'm doing both of the games I mention offer just that. What I don't want is for the game to drop the entire narrative on my spine before I've had a chance to experience what I'm going to be doing within it. All in all I agree with you on that especially when it comes to RPGs.

I knew nothing about Type-0 before watching this video other than the name and who it was made by. I am genuinely surprised how fucking shitty it is, which is surprising to me after how shitty the last couple FF titles (counting XIII sequels) Squeenix has put out. Are we finally done with FFXIII shit now, Square Enix? Can we please move onto greener pastures, or at least a pasture with any life left in it at all?
Badass Salmon Well, this is 1 person's input on the game whose name is RAGEAHOLIC for a reason. If you look at other reviews by most others and the majority of the playerbase and critics, it is pretty solid with a solid 73 average on metacritic. I didn't like it at first, but it really became fun after getting into it. Please, don't judge the game on only 1 review, check out others' opinions. However, i'll admit he has quite a few points on how awkward the game can be at times...

The problem with Japanese RPGs? Too many weeaboos, fan service, bad writing, and too much focus on the Japanese Otaku as they can't think outside of the box with great writing like what Hironobu Sakaguchi and Yuji Horii can come up with. I know that the Otaku in Japan are still a very strong market for game developers over there to try and please, but this is getting ridiculous.

That is what Hayao Miyazaki had to criticize about the current state of the manga and anime industry as they influence too much weeaboos and fan service which Square-Enix tries to present their games more for the Japanese Otaku in mind. That is why Japan's mindset with only appealing to themselves and not outside their country has become a focal point to the Japanese gamer since the medium of console gaming is dying quite rapidly. People like Hironobu Sakaguchi, Tetsuya Takahashi, Yuji Horii, Akihiro Hino, and those like at Platinum Games try to do because the oversaturation of how Japan portrays great game design has made many Westerners and Japanese gamers dislike their more recent games. I'm just saying that if this keeps going on, then Japan may as well be dead in the video game race. That shouldn't happen, but it is looking more grim. If you don't believe me, then Keiji Inafune has predicted this for quite a long time.
RRPGReviews I wouldn't even say it's a problem with Japanese developers not making games with the rest of the world in mind. I can only imagine consumers in Japan that aren't otaku are getting sick of the pandering as well. People everywhere can respect a good product, and products made to pander to a certain demographic are rarely better than ones made out of a real artistic drive. Case in point: Fire Emblem Awakening. A great series spawned a dumbed down fanservice game to grab some of that sweet otaku money by shoving the game full of DLC while forgetting how to make a good strategy game or story.
Thing is Beast Wars will be timeless because of its awesome story and amazing cast of characters... i haven't been able to say that about Final Fantasy since 2002...

koel700 It used to be that video RPGs at least were superficial facsimile's of tabletop games and as such did not fit under any other genre label. The makers of early games like Wizardry and Ultima (which set the foundation for the majority of games that followed) were influenced first and foremost by pen-and-paper RPGs. You had a character sheet with all your character's attributes listed, experience points, random die rolls dictating certain outcomes etc. Now, video RPGs lack even these cosmetic similarities. Since Japan pretty much ignored the evolution of reactivity and interaction in computer RPGs, I've taken to lumping JRPGs in with the Visual Novel genre.
Newbius93 Actually you right. JRPGs are more influenced by visual novels than D&D like WRPGs. Doesn't make them worse, you just need a different mind set going into them.

As happy as I am that you mentioned it, this HD craze has gone too far. They aren't HD, they're being adjusted for wide screen. Or the "remasters", fucker you aren't re"mastering" anything. Halo Anniversary and the recent Halo 2 are among the few games to get an actual treatment to the graphics. But wheres the gameplay? I get you're trying to sell nostalgia but fuck fix SOME mistakes at least. Can't play a single "remaster" or "HD" game today without running into ye old "oh fuck, this glitch again" problem. It's even worse when Microsoft boasts about keeping glitches in place. What the hell happened to gamers. Are they this dense and desperate for games they'll make up excuses for anything they get? Jesus, take a year break, go back in time and play some classics, watch the industry figure out where it went wrong. I'm scared of E3 this year. It's going to be HD the remaster all over the place.
Razorfist, I've seen your videos on Final Fantasy and the FFVII review brought much happiness to my life because I've never played the game itself but all I see from the hardcore fan-base is "FINAL FANTASY SVEN IS TEH BEST GAM EVUR R8 5 STERS JUST CUZ I SED SO N NOT CUZ U LIEK IT"... so yeah, cause of this I can never bring myself to play the game. This may seem a little random but is there any chance of you tearing down VIII? It's the first Final Fantasy game I've played, I enjoy playing it for the fact of nostalgia but it's honestly pretty bad, it took me a while to realize this fact but I think it's time for the rest of the fan-base needs a wake up call as well.

Beast Wars was a great show. The CGI in it is cringe-worthy by today's standards, but the show itself (and its hard-left turn into a surprisingly deep sequel, Beast Machines) was actually well-done for a kid's cartoon.
oh god this game, that gameplay... playing this on the PSP was a nightmare story? story??? there was story? I am Japanese but even that didnt help me to understand what the fuck was going on. wherever i was in the story, dont even care to figure out, i hadnt a flying fuck clue why a class out of a school was even being given these missions some of them can be done by the standard troops, just use tactics! oh wait, there are none. oh did i mention actually like ff14 where its at the moment? yeah take that how you will but it should at least express how bad this game was to some people.
I loved this review and agree with it completely, but with the current version of Final Fantasy XIV at 4 million paid monthly subscriptions, each at 13 bucks a month and no end in sight (new expansion in June), it's definitely making its money back at some point. It's also a legitimately good game.
Oh please. That 4 mill number is outdated. And was taken from the 'everyone gets a free trial, please God, please play our game' period. Which has since expired. I'd be curious to know what those numbers are in _actuality_, now that the dust has settled. Either way, your math doesn't add up. That game cost several _hundred_ million. And operated at a loss for the following THREE YEARS. And then they made it TWICE.

I wouldn't say that FF14 bombed, from what I've heard, its got several million subscribers at a time. Not exactly WoW numbers, but those numbers won't ever happen with a new game again when it comes to an MMO
Shit like this is why I've given up on eastern development to make good games. The only enjoyable titles I've found have all been outside of Japan, most of which being indie. And yes, I hate to sound like a hipster, but gaming is seriously almost hitting the point of "if you've heard of it, it's too mainstream." Look at games like Dust: An Elysian Tail (my personal favorite to crawl out of the indie scene in the last few years), or (if it's your cup of tea) Five Nights at Freddy's. The last AAA titles I've enjoyed were Skyrim and Mass Effect, both of which I could launch into a Razorfist-styled rant dissecting the how's and why's they don't stand up to a well-crafted indie game. But to further the dissection of this latest installment of what should ultimately be THE Final Fantasy, eastern devs have done nothing but fuck things up lately. In addition to this hunk of crap (that I was actually excited for before seeing the kind of typical "modern Japanese" crap that has plagued my following examples), Japan has ruined pretty much ALL of it's popular franchises. Resident Evil, Castlevania, Mega Man, Final Fantasy, Sonic, and that's just naming household names that have existed for the last 25 years or so. That's not taking into consideration the titles that Japan has buried in the Sahara like the US did to E.T. in an attempt to act like it never happened. But anyway, I'm doing precisely what I was trying to avoid, so I will leave you all with this; Japan needs to steer itself far, far away from game development before it bankrupts the entire country.

While I can't speak much on the NB front, as I haven't heard much on news of their games, Nintendo throwing out nothing but new Mario and Zelda titles (the latter akin to the FF-style "just let it die") has left an extremely sour taste in my mouth, as well as their last two consoles. I can also tear down Smash, for it's mindless repetition, among other shortcomings. Not to mention Nintendo is the whip-wielder on at least one decent second-party IP, which they have also opted to ruin (at least in my opinion), that being Fire Emblem. Nintendo is also in the works of introducing their 9th-gen console just after Sony and Microsoft's introduction into the 8th gen? Sounds a lot like SEGA's Dreamcast idea, right before SEGA stepped out of the console wars. Yet I did hear rumor of a tentative new Star Fox title (the first in about 10 years), which may or may not be worthwhile.

Bethesda has filed two lawsuits lately over the use of the words "Fallout" and "Scrolls," as if they own exclusive rights to LANGUAGE. I'm sure I don't have to mention how screwy EA has been with their business dealings, and then you have companies like Activision (doing the aforementioned "keep shitting it out despite it being the same thing over and over").
***** Probably. A big downfall of Resident Evil 6 was that Capcom wanted the game to appeal to the Call of Duty audience. Problem with that being that CoD players are going to be pre-occupied playing CoD. So they gained no new fans, and alienated their old fans. So to return to your previous point, you're probably right, because Japanese game devs see games like Halo and Mass Effect and it seems like they think "Why don't we include that?"
I've always been fascinated and confused by the FF series. The graphics have always been top notch and the fan boys/girls make it seem like you are missing out on something. But really, these games are nonsense.

In all honesty I think Type-0 is more a transition that Square is giving us. You go from Final Fantasy XIII's tactic switch based gameplay straight to a full on open world wide open combat fest were you're the boss of how things go and someone might get backlash. So you ease the fanbase into it with a okay Kingdom Hearts clone with out any of the visible magic. And no I don't mean curaga, I mean Disney.

What's a Cemetery? ...Was this lost in translation? Like, okay: did they use the English word for Cemetery in the original Japanese version, were all the characters speak Japanese? So, it sounds all mystical and foreign-y to the characters....so the other character tells them was equates to "Oh, cemetery (romanjii) means cemetery (kanjii)" or however the fuck the language works.
I noticed that even the character designs werent even consistent in quality Even their facial expressions and designs. The main character designs were great but if you look at the random henchmen they are talking to, they look like they just imported thrown away character designs from the PS2 era... I liked the battle system overall, but certain battles had that detestable bullshit of forcing a certain outcome where you cant defeat the boss then something comes in and swoops your ass up. The thing that infuriated me the most was at the end the game makes you think youve won but does the most sudden fuck you out of the fucking ether as your slapped with nearly everyone dying or already dead. It was the most sudden bitchslap ive ever seen in a game. What the fucking fuck?!
Final fantasy is the only franchise I honestly know nothing about about I can’t even tell you a single name of a character or a story premise or setting.
It pisses me off to see this series going down the shitter like a flaming noxious turd. i haven't been excited for a final fantasy game in YEARS. and trying to play 11 and not wanting to throw my 360 out the window. i waited thinking maybe 12 would be better...nope so i waited again (despite the shitty mmo i tried to pretend didn't exist) then 13 happened and that's when i considered this series dead to me. it was clear squire had stopped giving a iota of a fuck about IT'S FLAGSHIP SERIES and i decided that my cutoff was 10-2 every game after that so far i have avoided like capcom avoids putting out a megaman game. Hey Razorfist did u ever consider that Type 0 is basically a culmination of all the scrapped FF character designs and story bits from various FF preproductions? I can count at least three lightning designs in that game, or maybe it's bc SE has intentionally burned her image into my mind.
Sadly, I must agree with a lot of what is said here. Whenever, I was walking around the campus I kept thinking "why am I not playing Persona 4?" When I was fighting (as Jack because he is way more powerful than most of the other fighters and his only issue is easily nullified by dodging all the time) I kept thinking "Why am I not playing anything made by Platinum games?" When I was doing side quests I kept thinking "why am I not playing Kingdoms of Amalur." And when I was doing the strategy sections I was actually thinking "why am I not playing Fire Emblem or Valkyria Chronicles?" The story is also a mess, but mostly because someone thought it would be a good idea to hide 1/3 of it in a second play through (that and I couldn't tell if I was playing a war documentary or a melodramatic teenage drama half the time). The graphics I can excuse (I still play PS1 games, I can deal with crummy graphics), but the game overall was just not that good. And I was one of the dumb people that actually liked some elements of the FF XIII trilogy. Hopefully the sequel can iron out the kinks and give us something worthy of the interesting blend of ideas the game proposed, but didn't follow through on.
