100 episodes later, it's time to weigh in on one of the greatest JRPGs ever made! Special 100th Episode Intro Edited by: / ultimist Breath of Fire II Metal Remix here: • Breath of Fire II - Dy...
Halophilic NC So...Does it make me racist if, despite knowing who Jackie Chan is and what he looks like, I was easily convinced that some entirely different asian man looked exactly like him? I think I'm racist...
nosferatu5 It was a joke. Unclench your sphincter, learn to take a joke, and you might enjoy life a bit more. BTW, love how you responded to a comment about racism with a comment saying murder was acceptable. With logic like that, I have to assume your a social justice warrior.
You should take your own advice my friend. I didnt expect that you would think that it was a serious response to a completely innocent and a really really silly comment you made, that nobody would really take seriously. I mean, since when was mixing people up was considered racist, right? Take care friend.
***** I know I should maybe make this a separate thread and not jump into the middle of someone else', but I kinda wanted to maximize my chances of you reading this personally. I hope you'll bear with me a while here, 'cos this might just get a tad long-winded, although I won't blame you if you decide to TL;DR. My first RPG love was Suikoden. Let that sink in for a second. I was too young to have run into any of its spiritual predecessors on the Super Nintendo, so the sprites didn't bother me and nor did anything else, as far as I was concerned here was a game doing something possibly entirely unique and I fell head over heels for it, I really did. The deluge of characters, the runes, the mythic stuff, (even if I didn't know it was mythic or possibly even what mythic meant at the time) I ate it all up ravenously. Even when it consistently beat the everloving crap out of me in the late-mid game and story progress stopped dead I still came back to the front of the queue like Oliver Twist and asked for more. Then I lost access to it, and like the stupid kid I was at the time (and I'm not claiming not to be a stupid *adult*, just in exciting new ways) I didn't think to look for more of the same elsewhere, the idea that I could possibly do so simply didn't occur to me. I mourned the fair maiden I'd loved and lost and moved on, like you do. Fast-forward maybe five years, and the same guy who introduced me to Suikoden reappeared briefly and basically said "Hey kid, remember that game I lent you? You loved that, if I remember right. Try *this*". And then he dumped an unwanted duplicate copy of Breath of Fire 3 on my lap. Mine to keep and do with what I willed. I speak with no hyperbole whatsoever when I say that I left my room exclusively in order to eat and use the bathroom for in excess of a week, if Suikoden was analogous to the sort of heady but ultimately simple crush who first looks back at you with a nervous smile and invites you home for dinner then BoF3 was the one you meet in college; the one that makes you shove aside all else just to watch a crappy tv show with them when you really should be studying and then maybe go to that party one of their friend's friend's friends is having where you meet all the other people you're going to spend the next few years making your whole world and will remember 'til you die, even if none of you stay in contact any more these days. Teepo, Nina, Garr... even those horse dudes whose names I've forgotten, I can still see them on the inside of my eyelids years later, bobbing in combat stance and waiting for commands to either enact or react to. The world, the mythos, the balls to the walls gene-splicing system mentioned in the video; it's all still here (if more than a little faded from distance, I've got a shitty memory for details even of things I love a lot of the time) and I kick myself to this day for losing track of my copy. I miss everything about it. Yes, even the fairies. Uhm, in short I'm picking up what you're putting down here, Razorfist. Thanks for sharing and damn well *ensuring* I'm going to find it again along with the other three you recommend, however much it costs. Happy 100 and excuse me while I duck into your back catalogue to watch the other 99! Also, sorry for running my mouth like that, I knew this was going to go on a while but I never imagined quite how long. Whoops.
Breath of Fire 3 was one of those special games from my youth, even if I think Chrono Trigger is the best JRPG out there. Oh the wonderful memories and dragony goodness.
13:24 God dammit, Razorfist! You present the most fatally badass breath of fire retrospective and then proceed to make me shed manly tears. Well played.
And thank you for providing hours and hours of hilarious entertainment and commentary. As well as thank you for introducing me to movies, music, and videogames I wouldn't have looked into otherwise.
Great video! fuck Capcom never gives us anything we want these days, heck most great old japanese developers don't give us anything we want anymore either. The great old Japanese RPG is dead pretty much replaced with emo kids in action games.
Congrats on 100 episodes dude! I remember seeing your Super Mario RPG review and slamming that subscribe button faster than Jim Sterling's heart disease diagnosis. And since then you've become my favorite RU-vidr. Here's to 100 more episodes!
The way I see it, everyone has that one jrpg franchise other than Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest that they readily identify their love for whether it be Wild Arms, Grandia, Lunar, Shadow Hearts, Lufia, Persona, Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia etc. For Razorfist, it's Breath of Fire with an honerable mention going to Phantasy Star (as far as what he has revealed). For me, it's Suikoden with honerable mentions going to Anachronox, Evolution, and Star Ocean.
Shin Megami Tensei in general is about as good as turn-based RPGs get, though mind that difficulty cliff. Never played Suikoden, but I'm planning to check out the second sometime soon.
Shadow Hearts and Lunar for me. Still holding out hope for a HD remake or something of the Shadow Hearts Trilogy...maybe through in Koudelka as a neat bonus.
PlayerEssence He accuses the game of not having much customization. While on the surface level that's true, I think Chrono Trigger replaces it with the single most robust party system in any RPG I have played. Many games allow you to change party members, but it's often time meaningless (i'm looking at you, FF7). But in Chrono Trigger, just changing one party members changed the way you played the game. Having a certain trio meant you relied on triple techs, but just replacing one changed up your available attacks and the way you played. Certain party setups meant dependence on single attacks, others meant relying on double techs, so on and so forth. The fact that they could take something as simple as changing a party member meant rethinking your entire strategy due to its deep tech/combo system is the core of Chrono Trigger for me.
PlayerEssence I know, but Chrono had a bigger budget, Akira Toriyama and was released later in the snes lifespan. If BOF was given the same treatment, who knows what heights the series would of gotten.
This is the video that convinced me to hunt down a copy of the first two games, so that I could play them on my SNES. The first one was easy enough to get a hold of, since it’s one of the more common RPGs for the system, but then there was the second game. For whatever reason, the second one is so goddam hard to find, that I actually saw multiple copies of Little Samson on NES before finding one copy BoF2. I finally ended up getting a copy for my birthday, just two days ago, and that specific cartridge was found at a game store more than 5 hours away from where I live. All that said, both of them are pretty good, definitely among the best RPGs on the console.
After geeking out over the Breath of Fire review itself, and hearing your words of genuine gratitude for your subscribers, I have to follow that up by saying that I'm sorry for being late to this party. Thanks for still churning out the art and god-ffffucking-speed!
Awww, I remember when I found your channel in 2009, and you only had about 500 subscribers and three or four videos up. You were my 5th or 6th subscription on RU-vid. *Wipes the tears away.* They grow up so fast don't they?
Congrats on the one-hundred episodes! You're the reason I got into music. Beforehand I wasn't really a music person. The Metal/Music Mythos are pure quality compared to what I have seen on the whole website. And thank you very much for getting me into Daredevil! He surpassed everyone on my favorite list of superheroes and is now sitting at the top where he should be. Favorite person on RU-vid! Here's to another one-hundred episodes!
Thanks for introducing me to this series. I have the first two games for the SNES right now, and since I recently acquired a PS1, I’m on the lookout for 3 and 4.
Yeah, I'll agree BoF3 does feel like the end of the series. When I picked it up as a teen I loved the hell out of it, it was a great RPG adventure. Then 4 came out and something was just off about the game overall. It was an alright game, but it just didn't capture my imagination the same way 3 did. As for anything after 4 they don't exist to me.
MarsGundam I also loved 3 but didn't play 4. It's funny how 4 looks more dated though with it's use of more 3D while 3's sprites have aged much better.
+MarsGundam The fourth BoF had these huge philosophical/existentialist undertones that ended up forcing the plot to make little sense, especially towards the end. While not a bad game, BoF 4 was kind of an unnecessary sequel that just felt mediocre compared to 3 (which ended with a positive enough note to not let any sequels go by).
I've noticed early on that you make these videos because it's fun for you and you like doing it and it can be easily seen, especially in your Music Mythos episodes, that you are passionate about this stuff. You're doing great job with your content. Keep up.
Thank YOU Razorfist for putting a tons of effort into making such hilariously good videos that always make my day and ameliorate my english d= I swear you're my favourite youtuber/reviewer! I wish you good luck on everything and please keep up the good work as long as you can =D
This is your first video that has caught my attention (as I usually do not look around for vintage gaming videos), but I want to thank you for taking me to a trip down memory lane to my early teen years. God-fucking-speed.
Great video! This is the first of your vids I have watched and I have to say simply based on how you speak I am going to watch many more. Thank you for covering one of the best rpg series, (until DQ anyway) of all time.
Bit (extremely) late on my part, but BoF5 is one of those rare games that's bad, but actually has enough love put into it to be almost worthy of forgiveness. like razor said, that game was literally *one* step away, in every direction, from being amazing, and that's why it hurts to see it be so bad. bof 6 on the other hand... there is no BoF6
Dude, you do awesome work. Your videos are thorough, thoughtful, and well constructed. You deserve no less than the full praise for your work, and a whole LOT more. Can't wait for the next one.
I'm glad to hear your passion for this channel is still alive and well. I look forward to anything you upload because for that passion, I'd watch you tile a bathroom or mow a lawn you're so entertaining. Keep it up.
Man, as soon as I start to replay Breath of Fire 3 after not watching you for like a month, I see you doing a retrospective of it. Fuck yeah, good to see another person who even knows let alone is a fan of the Breath of Fire series out there. Rock on, dude.
Been watching your show since the Deus Ex review, and I've been waiting for some form of Breath of Fire review since you mentioned it in one of your vlogs I think, so I think it fits ep#100 perfectly! Just wanted to say congrats on your journey thus far, and god speed!
By the time news of Breath of Fire 4 made it to my ears, I didn't own any consoles anymore, only a PC. BOF4 came out for the PC, which is why I even heard of it at the time, so I had the pleasure of playing it. At a time when I was beyond disappointed with the Final Fantasies, and expecting nothing from it, BOF4 swept the rug from under my feet. My whole point here is that for someone who never touched any of the earlier games in the franchise because they seemed uninteresting, when amateurishly compared to Chrono Trigger and the Fantasies, the fact that BOF4 found a permanent place in my memories and nostalgic reminiscing is a testament of the brilliance this series possesses. Even if said greatness was already fading by then.
I had only heard of the Breath of Fire series before but I had never seen it in its entirety. Now that I've seen it, I think I should check it out. Great 100th episode btw.
Dragon Quarter was actually my first look into the series and I did actually enjoy it cause of how different it was from most JRPGs. However, the whole "counter going up with each step" was the straw that can break the back of even a sturdy camel. Even if it was thematically appropriate, its seemed to be more of a way to limit exploration, probably cause they didnt make the areas all that big...though they were interesting areas. Also, goggles aside, I wouldnt really say that it was steampunk. More like general dystopian future. They had computers and robot running on electricity, as well as cloning and bio-engineering.
Glad someone else is showing this series the love it deserves. Played breath of fire 3 on the ps2 for the first time in 2011. Didnt know what it was at first. Fucking loved it by the end.
100 episodes (along with the rants and Music Mythos) later and you're still my hands down favorite YT personality. There are lots of "edgy" reviewers and critics lurking about on the internet but so far you're the only one to deliver with such a high level of passionate eloquence and scathing insight in every topic you tackle. God fucking speed, good sir. Now I'm off to my local game shop to hunt for anything BoF-related I can find (that isn't Dragon Quarter obviously).
Thank you Razorfist, your taste in gaming, humor & metal are without comparison. Rock on and keep it coming : Metal Mythos episodes seriously kick ass, I salute you. \m/
Good video. I found myself feeling the same as you about Dragon Quarter when I initially played but now I find myself wanting to give it another go after reading more about it.
Rock on, man. I've enjoyed your thoughts and disturbing visuals for these past few years. On Breath of Fire front, I played the first one and that was it, sadly. Now I'm strictly a PC gamer so unless GOG picks these up, I'm likely to miss out. But now I sorta wish I'd hung onto my old PS one and Super Nintendo.
god fucking speed man...ur show is awesome and i love ur blunt honesty on certain things....its because of u that i was able 2 get into certain bands that i never heard of like Dokken....thanks 4 everything u do and keep on rocking....
The only game I've ever played in the series is 3, but after hearing how good 2 is I'll be sure to check that out. Also, congrats on 100 episodes. Here's to another hundred then a hundred more!
Breath of Fire 4 is one of my all time favs. Never managed to get the the prequels. I did pick up Dragon Quarter but just couldn't finish it due to it's difficulty. Loved the retrospective and keep up the good work bro! God fuckin' speed!!
Keep it coming for another 100 Razor, best show on RU-vid, no joke. And may I humbly request a legacy of kain retrospective and/or a W.A.S.P metal mythos somewhere down the line?! ;-)
Well it's good to see that you are still having fun with your hobby, all of is fans love your work even thou some of might not agree with everything you say but love the passion you put into your videos. I was only able to play Breath of Fire 1 I still got a long way to go to play the other titles.
Thank you for the trip down memmory lane! I startet with BoF II. Actually had to learn english fist before I could fully enjoy it. In retrospect, I'm so happy it got released like that in Switzerland.
After years of studying, I finally put my Japanese to the test by playing the majority of the game without an faq, and to my surprise, I beat BoF 2 based on that ability. Never regretted playing this series.
