it took me 17 years to get diagnosed with Endo even though i had severe menstrual cramps and a bunch of the other symptoms since 13yo. And even if you do get diagnosed, they will just give you more pills which are dangerous long term.

As somebody with a chronically under-researched invisible illness (not SIBO or digestion related) I feel you on all of this; feeling invalidated and not believed, doing my own research, having to weigh up risk/ benefits for myself when I am not a doctor etc. etc. Your list of questions to ask yourself before starting treatment is really good. For me it's been important to find practitioners (allopathic or alternative) who have seen a lot of my condition before. Also to set boundaries, like everyone has a bit of advice and I can't try everything. Sometimes this even means saying no to the suggestions of my doctors and therapists because I am already doing too much and it feels like adding that extra thing will overwhelm me. The thing that has helped the most is reducing stress. My psychotherapist can also hold some of these strands of the different approaches to treatment that I am taking and help me to analyse what to continue with and what to let go of from an objective and unemotional stand point. Also stress makes my illness worse. I wish that there was a million double blind placebo controlled peer reviewed trials for my condition, but their aren't, and whilst I am still sick, I can't just do nothing and wait for the research to catch up. And the reality is that this is the case for most people living with a chronic illness; we have to work with the research that is out there and trust the clinical experience of people who've seen our condition before, making the choices that we feel are the most likely to work and the least likely to cause harm. Solidarity Abbey, I believe you will get there with this. I think it is not a coincidence that 'patient' is a word with two meanings in English. Medical patients have to be patient.

Yes! I have ADHD and it’s crazy how many people don’t believe it exists in children, let alone adults. It’s so frustrating! I been fired 3 times. In all three of those situations, I was doing the main, most importantly parts of my job very well. It was the small things I struggled with. Ironically, I’m a therapist and have found that mental health agencies don’t care about the mental health of their employees.

Maybe if you drank lemon water in the morning? I hear it detoxes and cleanses your body... Only joking, seriously though I am so sorry you're going through this. It sounds very difficult. Whilst you figure it all out, you could try to find a therapist that specialises in long term health conditions for psychological support as it sounds so debilitating. The UK has plenty of therapists that specialise in the psychological aspects of chronic health issues (I am one) so there must be some in Canada too. In no way suggesting that the problem is in your head but if the pain and discomfort is making your MH worse then maybe chatting to someone someone specialised might be helpful. I hope this comes across as supportive. Much love to you Abby 💗

Like so many others here, I also feel your pain! I've been diagnosed and treated for SIBO twice and the whole thing is so exhausting and isolating. I feel really lucky to have found a naturopath and functional medicine doctor who deal with a lot of SIBO and it was relatively easy to get a plan together and get my meds and supplements, but the process is still brutal. I hope you get some relief and find what works for you! And when everything sucks, just remember: you can do hard things :)

Abbey. It will be OK. This happened to my daughter. We found a grear dietian who supported us in finding a way for her to eat and move that gave her the best path forward to a pain free life. I feel you. I had the same problem in the UK 3 years ago. I had apparently for a loooong looong time a high amount of bacteria inside me and no one could help me to find out what I had, until I found a great nutritionist. She changed my life and I am so thankful that she found the problem. I had to pay the procedure and all medication on my own, but it was life changing after so many years of pain. But it was also very expensive, what shouldn’t be. I agree there is not enough help and education about this problem and I wish they would change it. It’s great that you’re talking about it and I hope you keep continuing to educate people about it. I hope you feel better and that you never have to go trough it again.

However in the past months it's also setting my gastro issues off and I have stomach attacks so bad I wouldn't wish the pain on literally anyone! As a person who has recovered from an eating disorder (with your help smashing my inner diet culture) and someone who has been plagued by years of severe gastrointestinal issues I empathize with you so much about how hard it is to get the support that you need to feel better. Most people, and even most health care providers, do not understand how debilitating something like this can be for someone to go through and it makes you feel really alone. I have never been more depressed in my life than when I was in the throws of it last year. Eventually I found a doctor that believed me, knew how to treat me, and understood that there were certain things that I couldn't compromise, such as cutting out food groups because of my eating disorder history. It was like winning the jackpot. It was a super hard road but, I promise that it gets better! Keep fighting for yourself girl! You got this!

I have gastroparesis and the amount of Doctors who just do not understand gastric illness is shocking, astounding and deeply concerning. At least here in America treatment options are sooo behind the times for most things. I went to Japan to get comprehensive care. I used the life insurance money my parents deaths left me with. I was disgusted I had to use that money on that. They got me in line with a doctor in Texas for after care. Shocker, when a doctor finally stopped accusing me and started listening to me I was able to get to a point of management. I've had only two flairs in 7 years since and have been able to maintain. Honestly, I can only speak for America, but our medical care and providers are getting crazy behind in technology, information and innovations. The system is so overburdened we're trapped decades behind other parts of the world in a lot of medical treatments

Thank you for voicing your experience and frustration with this SIBO eradication process. I have methane-dominant SIBO, too, and I've already tried treating it once. It definitely feels worse now and I am anticipating the results of my second breath test any day now. After several other GI tests the doctor has determined that my SIBO is likely due to structural problems from prolapse (after 3rd childbirth). I think I have every type of prolapse a human can have including small bowel prolapse. I may need surgery before this dang SIBO can actually be treated. I've tried the Elemental Diet route and you are so right - I only did 3 days of strict Elemental and it was very psychologically challenging. I don't know how people do the 2 weeks!

I’m sure you’ve gone down the SIBO rabbit hole (as all of us SIBOers have). I have good feelings about your protocol! Karla here. I can so relate to you. I have never heard of Sibo but I had been to so many drs to find out what was wrong with me. They all said “IBS”. I finally found a woman dr who actually listened to me and after a battery of tests at the hospital-and a second and third opinion that she insisted on-she performed surgery on me. She removed all of my large intestine and attached the rest of what was left to the “exit”. I was the first person who didn’t have cancer she performed this on. She gave me my life back. I will forever be grateful that she listened to me and didn’t think I was “crazy” or to just live with it like so many other drs did

Oh man, this hit close to home. I also have a sadly under-researched rare illness, and a chronic and debilitating one at that. What you described is way to common for people like us, being seen as crazy hypochondriacs and having to go above and beyond to just be heard. Please make more videos on these kinds of topics - it brings much needed awareness and incredible support. At some point I got so ill that I could only safely tolerate white rice - breakfast, lunch and dinner, for months. Adding in new foods was a challenge, and I still can only eat a short list of foods. I'd really appreciate it if you could explore different chronic illnesses that affect diet (MCAS in my case) and how to create balanced, enjoyable and satisfying meals. It always feels like juggling emotional and physical well being.

I've had c. Diff before and it was awful. It took me several weeks to find a doctor who would test me and who didn't dismiss it as food poisoning or a stomach bug. So just to be aware, you may not present with all of the typical symptoms but you can still have it. I never had a fever but I constantly had nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and extremely painful intestinal cramps (on par with being mid-labor). I found your channel a few weeks ago after my own SIBO diagnosis. I've been battling it for around 20 years. Thank you for continuing to post about your journey. I'm hydrogen dominant and also have suspected fungal overgrowth. I had to order my rifaximin from Canada (I live in the US) because insurance doesn't recognize it as a treatment for SIBO and wanted me to take antidepressants instead. I found it mind boggling that they would require me to see if an antidepressant worked for a bacterial infection. I'm grateful I was able to afford treatment out of pocket (although not from a US pharmacy, who wants $2,000 for 1 course). I begin my antibiotics tomorrow (it took a month for them to get to me). And when they're done I start an antifungal course and the SIBO Specific Diet (a la Dr. Siebecker) for an indeterminant amount of time but as I understand it should be less than 6 months given the damage such a diet can do on the flora in the large intestine. It's going to be a challenge, that's for sure. It's probably the most restrictive of all of the SIBO related diet options but I trust my doctor and I want to give my body every chance to get this under control the first time. I'm also working on addressing the things I suspect to be underlying causes which includes anxiety, abdominal adhesion from prior surgeries, and just a lack of motility possibly related to another medical condition. The anxiety is a part I know you can relate to, but for me I didn't realize I was living with high functioning anxiety. Like, I feel like I am not, although I get bouts every couple years that I can definitely pin down as anxiety. But all of my practitioners are on the same page about this so I figure they're probably right and am doing my best to calm my body down regularly throughout the day. Relaxing before eating and eating while doing nothing else are turning out to be the hardest part honestly. So, that's me I guess, to help others relate. I know we all have our own story and protocol and results. And I'm with you, I think we're on the cusp of SIBO becoming recognized for how prolific it really is.

I’m a pharmacist. I’m not familiar with the treatment of sibo, I doubt it really even is treated in my country because I’ve never heard it discussed, but I just want to let you know about antidepressants and gut issues: serotonin plays a large role in your digestion and your gut, and it stimulates contractions in the gut: this is just my personal speculation but maybe the idea with antidepressants (most of which help serotonin hang out longer in the nerve synapses to strengthen it’s effects) and sibo is that they’re trying to increase serotonin in the gut lining (the production of which btw is also largely affected by gut bacteria!) to help get the gut moving better to lessen the pooling of the bacteria. Lots of drugs that were originally developed for one indication are found to be benefitial for completely different conditions (some antidepressants and heart medications are used for prevention of migraines for example) so one shouldn’t be too quick to judge :)

@@enenenergp Thank you for all of the info. All valid and relevant, and probably helpful for folks with IBS-D as well. I definitely understand approaching antidepressants for IBS-D with spasms. I don't have intestinal spasms (I do have esophageal ones, but different issue, and if antidepressants can treat that then I have a whole community of achalasia sufferer's who'd be interested in that). Basically my anger is that in the US, the health insurer is dictating the treatment, rather than the health practitioner. I'm fortunate to have the ability to pay for some level of treatment without insurance, but I recognize that as the privilege it is. And I'm still mad that my insurer is following a scripted workflow rather than allowing my practitioner to work my case like I'm an individual human being and not a statistic described by claim codes.

If it isn't enough to rush to the ER, we just deal with it. I didn't understand why until I was physically unable to work, and for the sake of my financial survival I had to investigate the issue. No solutions, not even an MRI or CT offered, and the specialist I was referred to found nothing...and didn't mention next steps. The quality of doctors has deteriorated.

My family has dealt with extensive issues with the Canadian medical system (including misdiagnosed cancer, misdiagnosed PCOS, the list goes on...). You’re a smart cookie, Abbey! I am so sorry to hear you’re suffering with sibo and all the distress (intestinal and otherwise) that goes along with that. Your reminder that just because there’s no clinical evidence for something YET doesn’t mean we throw it out is a key distinction that many miss. Anecdotal evidence shows us where to focus research to find cures. Remember also that some types of treatment, such as acupuncture, will never have that “gold standard” double blind placebo-controlled study simply bc the patient / practitioner know whether they’re giving / receiving the treatment. Yet ample research demonstrates that acupuncture can reduce stress and inflammation and speed healing (which is why insurance covers it in the US). I have Crohn’s and was prescribed cipro for a long time, which ruined my gut bacteria and gave me a systemic yeast infection (read: yeast in blood). My doctor prescribed enormous does of clinical strength probiotics numerous times a day and also had me go on a diet that would starve the yeast and feed the probiotics. It worked! Don’t forget to support your wellness with regular gentle exercise, massage, acupuncture and other protocols for calming the nervous system. When you’re ill, these are NOT luxuries but essential to healing. Remember that the vagus nerve supplies the gut and responds to parasympathetic nervous system activation (rest and digest). Be kind to yourself. People with Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis (both types of inflammatory bowel disease/ IBD) know a lot about this. Check out those communities online and they’ll help you. Love your content! Hope you get relief soon ❤️

After drastic weight loss and my symptoms doubling in intensity with each round of meds, I took matters into my own hands did some research on evidence based protocols for the symptoms I was expressing. I came across actual real live studies supporting the use of black seed oil as treatment for antibiotic res. C Diff strains and WITHIN HOURS I had relief from agonizing abdominal pains and a fever that lasted 4 months. I followed up with my gastro doctor and he looked at me like I was a psychotic witch for claiming what I used worked. Evidence based medical care = witchcraft 🤔 call me a witch then. Hi abbey from experience and advice from several functional medicine doctors I've learnt that sugar and carbs are the real culprits to Sibo continuing as your continuing to feed these bad bacterias so eliminating certain foods is key and then to introduce certain foods with pro and prebiotics. Usually believe they both shouldn't be taken together. Ofc it's not so simple but it's very very effective just means need to become consistent.

It's so frustrating all around. I was diagnosed with SIBO almost ten years ago as a child. My GI doctor didn't believe me (or my parents) and refused to let me test for it initially. The nurses who helped with the test (I had to go to the hospital for it) didn't believe me either. It was a naturopathic doctor who lobbied for me to get tested and get proper treatment (a few rounds of antibiotics and a strict diet, in my case). It's sad to me that it's still such a battle to get treatment for SIBO. I'm hoping that i'll get easier over the years - but back when I had it, no one thought it was that prevalent, so seeing other people talk about it is encouraging.

Years of my life have been spent trying to get doctors to believe me (both for GI stuff and other health issues). Some doctors just don't want to listen or take the time to learn about what's affecting you if they don't know a lot about it. I've had doctors tell me my very real physical symptoms were anxiety or depression when I knew they weren't. I even wrote my college essay on medical gaslighting and how it's caused me to struggle with trusting myself and my body. It's really frustrating and the red tape of insurance and whatnot makes it that much more difficult. I hope this all resolves for you so you can get past it and all the red tape that's come along with it!

I'm in the UK and after a long horrible journey finally got diagnosed with SIBO. The dietician/nutritionist consultant T the hospital I was under followed Kings college London studies for my recovery and rather than antibiotics I was prescribed Symprove for 4 months. The first cycle worked wonders and cleared my sibo. It has come back over the years, sometimes triggered after bad cluster migraines but now 1 bottle of Symprove which takes a few weeks to get through clears the sibo up. I had my worst bout in 7 years recently and was so happy I still have something to rely on when it happens

My 8 year old son has a rare disorder and is on an elemental formula. Finding care for him is hard. Half the time I have to carry a binder of info on his disease so they can read about it 🤦🏻‍♀️ hugs on your difficult journey.

I’m going through the same thing right now in the US - I have a severe overgrowth of methanogenic bacteria, but not hydrogen. I’m currently seeing a functional doctor who went to traditional medical school but then did a fellowship focusing on functional medicine. She’s been the only one so far that has taken my digestive discomfort symptoms seriously and ordered the SIBO test for me. Waiting on her treatment plan but hoping it’s not too bad like you said!!

I always noticed no matter if it's IBS or SIBO, people always think it is in your head. It is annoying when no one believes you

I’d rather cut foods out of my diet than take the meds your talking about! That would give me the will power for sure

Your video is literally me, all the frustration and overwhelm. What’s crazy is that I was prescribed neomycin right after my positive test, it kinda worked kinda didn’t, and my Dr. said, just call if you need more. What. I’m in the USA so it’s interesting to hear the differences between Canada and here for that. Good thing I never did call for another round, I went to a ND and he was shocked I was prescribed that alone and also because I’m hydrogen dominant, so it doesn’t make sense based of evidence for me to use neomycin, and surprise surprise, my GI Map a few months after I did neomycin shoed high levels of C Diff, I never knew that that could be a side effect of neomycin until I watched this video. Holy cow. Good luck, sounds like our journey started the same time and hopefully we’ll be healed at the same time too!

I love you so much. This is my struggle on matching my psychiatric drugs with my PCOS condition. Lots of evidence. Lots of tests. Lots of dr feedback. Limited access to drugs and my medical plan doesnt cover the drugs i need. They cover everything that make me gain more weight and had me get letters from all my doctors. Then said no. Not covering it. I have to be diabetic first.

I’m so sorry to hear you’re SIBO returned. I had a return SIBO diagnosis this year which was met with “wow. People normally don’t get this twice…” which wasn’t a productive start. I ended up returning to a very expensive out of pocket doctor because I couldn’t find someone more “traditional” to believe me. It took me 10 years to get my first diagnosis two years ago.

@@AbbeysKitchen A weird thank you, but thank you for using your platform to bring awareness to things like this! I once had a doctor tell me "Well, sure you're sick but not 'sick enough' for insurance companies to find it sexy enough to invest money into." Appreciation for your efforts and a huge "I'm sorry" that you're dealing with this!

My GI told me to take Atrantil for my sibo and it helped so so much! I still have to take it as a maintenance due to my gastroparesis but it keeps it down and allows me to function normally!
