Honestly, the part where KC loses it and starts screaming at his wife is effective, but not in the way he intended. It’s a pretty realistic portrayal of how abusive people (men and women) verbally explode at their spouses to intimidate them. And if your partner beats the (language) out of a garbage can after getting in your face and screaming, there’s a good chance they’ll use you as the punching bag during future tantrums. KC’s behavior isn’t “good guy who got frustrated,” it’s abusive.

I dislike it when Christians try to commodify things like marriage, because things like that can't be magically fixed by a 40 day tutorial book. I think in several instances, we like to take control of things and then slap God's name on it so we feel like we're doing the right thing, when we're actually doing the exact opposite. Great review. Made me think.

So true, the idea that very bad marriages should always "work it out" is a pure fantasy. The husband's character is extremely selfish and emotionally abusive, so they have two options: marriage counseling or divorce. Notice how they take neither route, and the wife gets treated like property instead of an equal partner.
@Musicalowl12

I just remarked to a friend recently how we always seem to want a formula for things rather than a relationship. The Israelites wanted a king to tell them what to do rather than a relationship with God. The Pharisees focused so heavily on the law, they missed the relationship with God, that Jesus was presenting. Today, the church has all kinds of books giving us a formula for things. I think that's why some things in the Bible are spelled out and others are more vague. It's because God doesn't want us to get caught up in formulas for righteousness, and instead, rely on Him for guidance in. every situation. He knows we will mess up and that's where grace comes in.

hose stretcher is an imaginary piece of equipment you tell a rookie to go get. We have the same joke in the production industry, "a cable stretcher". There is no such thing, and it will never be invented because it would damage the hose/cable. Its kind of like telling a new employee to go get something out of "the attic" or "basement" when there is no attic or basement.

His computer is still 15 years in the past.
@spacemanandy2
@spacemanandy2 8 лет назад
The depiction of his struggle with pornography was complete "trash." He throws his computer out and all of a sudden he's not tempted anymore? He doesn't feel any kind of urge at work or anywhere else? Porn is like any other addiction in that it takes huge amounts of discipline and perseverance to break, just like alcohol or drugs. And once you get addicted, even if you break your addiction you will still have that urge to relapse. They completely downplayed that whole subplot and made it seem like it is a really easy problem to solve, when in truth any addiction is a lifelong battle. That is the main reason I don't like this movie.
@jayblade2000
@jayblade2000 8 лет назад

@sarahberkner
@sarahberkner 8 лет назад
You have a point there, although throwing out one's computer (if they don't need it for work which they probably would) isn't a bad start.
@spacemanandy2
@spacemanandy2 8 лет назад
I would say it would be better to unplug it and put it away in the attic or somewhere hard to get to instead of throwing it away. That way you're not wasting a several hundred dollar investment that has many other uses. But each person has to deal with it in their own way so if that's the only way it works for them, more power to them.
@ASmith-jn7kf
@ASmith-jn7kf 8 лет назад
As a woman who has struggled, I have had no issues. I think that depends on the person and what they expose themselves to. I think in general sex excites people and I think he was 100% right to throw it out because of her commitment the movie isn't about his struggle but about showing his wife his commitment because she was the one hurting and it hurt their marriage. I prayed that our husband threw out his phone to get that moneky out of our marriage and had he had done that it really would have showed me how serious he was to get it out of our marriage. I also think that some people that are addicted are addicted for different reasons once I got married I saw no use for porn or masturbation even when he rejected me sexually. Jesus said if your right hand causes you to sin cut it off and your right eye, pluck it out for it would be better to enter heaven maimed than be thrown into the fire whole. Porm is the most avoidable thing in life. You can not have a tv and not have an internet connection you do not need such things they are just luxuries instead you choose to have access to things without denying yourself and thinking you are right. WRONG. Any Christian person will struggle as we are all excited by sex and seeing someone have sex but you don't have to fall you can gain self control to fight or you can just avoid it altogether but you choose to fall. I don't understand some Christians, they make a bed with sin it and pray not to fall instead of just denying themselves.
@spacemanandy2
@spacemanandy2 8 лет назад
Where you do have a valid point in that he could have been trying to show her his commitment to her, this is never addressed in the film. And she was not the only one suffering in the relationship; they both were. They were both missing each other. She was not respecting him at all, and he was completely withdrawn from her. The issue I had with the film is not necessarily that he threw the computer out; that is a small detail. It's that his addiction was very poorly handled in the film. It's almost dishonest how easy it was for him to break it. He never spoke of it to anyone else, and apparently never had another temptation even though he had made a pattern of it. Also, I don't agree with you that you can easily just "deny" yourself from sin. Now taking steps to prevent yourself from falling back into sin is a good idea, but if you were able to just "deny" yourself from sin then why would you need Christ's sacrifice at all? Perhaps in your experience porn is easy to avoid, but I very much disagree. If this is true, then how come at least 70% of men aged 18 to 24 visit sites at least once a month? What about the fact that 1 in 3 of porn viewers are female? It may be easy for you to avoid porn, but that doesn't mean it's the "easiest" in general. I think it is, as you have said yourself, that you do not understand why it is so difficult to break out of.

They could have used it! They never said how far bad they were in to want divorce! It is really so sanitized that we barely get anything to work off of! Why not? Why not just get counseling? If that 40-plan clearly worked so well, then I assume they couple in question never worked through these issues by themselves.

I do agree with you about how Christian movies (and most of the Church) make it seem that once you become a Christian that all of your troubles will go away. That becoming a believer is the answer to everything wrong with your life. That is contrary to what Jesus said though. He said it would be very difficult and we will endure many hardships and troubles by following Him. Keep up the good work Kevin!

The best christian movie I saw so far funny enough is a children's movie called "the miracle maker" that basically tels the life of Jesus. However it tells it very well, does some PRETTY creative ways of chnging the animation style whenever parables are told, flashbacks happen, or very dramatic scenes, has in some areas surprsingly unexpected references to history (especially for a chirldens movie) like portraying some of the desicples as Zealots, and overall is just a very good movie.

Two quick points about the "comic relief" scenes with the firemen: 1st, those shots help to break up the more serious/preachy material. 2nd, those shots were designed to show the camaraderie between the firefighters. One of my friends who is a volunteer firefighter (and training to be a professional) has said that he and his co-workers have goofy interactions just like that when they're not on call. So for him, the movie really nailed the sense of being a firefighter. Just my two cents.

While I believe that marriage can be a good thing for some individuals. I also believe in using common sense before jumping into marriage. And in turn, divorce is a necessary evil so to speak. There are times where divorce can be a good thing. The couple in this movie being a great example! They sound like they only got married just to appease their parents so they won't look bad because they live together while not being married. Basically marriage should never be a bandage for love or relationship stuff. Or gosh forbid appeasing your parents who fear they might have a grandbaby out of wedlock because a couple live together while not being married. Marriage should be only done if you feel it's the right thing for your relationship and you feel you strongly love this person. And by love this person, I mean don't have a screaming match every 5 minutes.

Nailed it. A movie for this "40 day love challenge" would've worked better if it depicted a marriage worth saving. She comes across as harder to live with than the wife from Flywheel, and he displays a way too unforgettable moment of being physically violent. And of course in Kendrick movie fashion, it all works out because he and he alone repents of his ways and she doesn't have to do a thing.

Does anyone think Catherine is just as bad as Gavin but the difference is that he's written and acted in a very stereotypical slimy way, while she's supposed to be the protagonist so that automatically makes her more of a good guy (at least in Kendrick Brothers world)? Think about, as far as I can remember, he doesn't know that Catherine's married until he meets Caleb at the hospital and until she finds out that Caleb paid for her mother's medical equipment, she was leading Gavin on.

The filmmakers probably thought the line "How am I supposed to show love to somebody over and over and over who constantly rejects me?" was cleverly ironic coming from a character who rejects Christianity. But it's not like the wife doesn't believe the husband exists, (that sounds like a more interesting premise), she just doesn't get along with him. They're probably going on the "God's Not Dead"-style premise of "They do secretly do believe in God, they're just mad at him!", but still, wow, what a terrible metaphor!

No, just gotta say, the point about it being dark "in there" (we're assuming it's a house fire) is incredibly accurate. No matter how light it is outside, inside the house it's like being lost in a cave, especially when you're carrying one hundred plus pounds of gear and a mask over your face. Also... if you've ever heard your parents fight about money or anything for that matter... that argument scene is pretty accurate. The exposition isn't just to explain stuff to the audience. The exposition is to bring up every. little. bitter. thing. because that's how real arguments go. I can't even watch that scene because it conjures up so many bad memories. I do like your reviews, but I think those two points were off.

I've never seen this movie before this, but I have to agree with you about the acting. I, unfortunately, have seen plenty of marriage arguments in various contexts, and it is so easy to tell that the film's scenes are contrived. Plus, what is with that end message? Paying for a girl's stuff is the way to her heart?? Good to know. **Sigh.** Anyway, the new format works great, can't wait to see what comes next. :)
@MicahGreaney
@MicahGreaney 9 лет назад
I would say to go ahead and watch the movie and form your own opinions. The money was not portrayed as any kind of key to her heart. If you see the development in the movie, you'll notice that throughout it the main character (the guy) has been saving up for a boat. It was the one thing he just wasn't willing to give up after (somewhat begrudgingly at first, but more whole-heartedly as the movie progresses) he gave up everything else. This keyed off his wife to the fact that he wasn't playing around. The boat had been more important than her before, but now that he'd given it all up for her, she understands that he's legitimately changed. Again, don't go by Kevin's lame, misguided, and overly critical review. And don't go by mine either. I'd say watch it for yourself and decide. (I'm not usually so critical but Kevin kind of upset me with this one. He just wasn't fair in the least with any of this and I'd challenge him to present anything legitimate that I, myself, can't easily refute by taking a closer look at the movie.)
@autumnhobbit
@autumnhobbit 9 лет назад
Perhaps, but that doesn't change the fact that the situations in the film are contrived and poorly-acted. I agree with the review simply because I've seen enough Christian material of a similar sort that I'm not surprised this movie follows the same pattern. I'll probably see it at some point at a church event, anyway, but I wouldn't be surprised if it follows the same pattern of being if not bad, then at least half-hearted.
@MicahGreaney

Autumn Hobbit You are of course free to form your own opinions, and your point is well taken. Believe me, I view everything very critically and most Christians films are just straight up pathetic. However, I really wouldn't say so about this one. Yes, the acting was in many cases sub-par but so are many, many secular releases. Let's not single this one out because it's "Christian." Also, just in case your weren't aware (It's difficult to detect tone of voice online, so let me clarify that I say this without any hint of sarcasm) none of the actors/actresses in this movie were payed. They all volunteered their time and effort for free. Considering this fact, I'd say the acting is pretty darn good. And overall, the acting was actually very decent. But Kevin hand picked (as it's essentially his job to do) every single bad scene in the movie. It's my assertion that's he's essentially created a "straw man" of the entire film. He's taken bits and peaces of it which were sub-par, misrepresented those pieces, and then thrown the entire movie out. This is simply ridiculous, and quite honestly deceitful. Sorry for the essay, but I can't encourage you enough to watch it for yourself. I suspect you might be pleasantly surprised.

***** Kirk Cameron's claim to fame is that he was an atheist who "met Jesus" and I don't doubt his sincerity - just his understanding. He has embraced the most simple and easy to swallow aspect of Christianity and treats it like the full truth of Christianity when it is really only a scratch in the surface. But complex facts of reality do not sell a philosophy centered around a benevolent creator who wants you to have the best possible life. I understand the reasoning, but that's not what the Bible portrays at all. God is not here for us, we are here for him. That is a lot of trouble for 21 century, western-thinking, post-enlightnment humans to swallow. We are the descendents of people who overthrew almost every single monarchy in the world because man has the right to be masters of their own destiny. As such modern Christianity has become nothing but fluffy, hypocritical, nonsense. Instead of reading and trying to understand the philosophy of our place with God, Christianity has become a checklist of "do this and your life will be good." Christians thrive on slogans like "It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve" or "Premarital sex puts you on the used car lot." Repurcussions are obvious - "If you sleep around before marraige, you will never have a happy marraige." They give reason to the vague rules and dogma that it has taken biblical scholars and church leaders generations to even come close to understanding. And why not? Easy answers are appealing. It's the #1 reason why people turn to religion. "Why is there evil in the world?" Because Adam and eve screwed up. "Why can't I sleep with my boyfriend." Because you will become a slut. "Why can't two men marry if they love each other." They don't really, they are just confused. "How was the world made?" In 7 days, by God. The thing is, those simple answers are satisfying enough to build museums and theme parks and movies around - but they don't stand up to the test of reality. What happens when someone who has been a good Christian all their life and believes God has great work for her finds out she has an inoperable, milignant tumor? What happens when her true and genuine prayers and cries of desperation fall on what seem to be deaf ears? Christians movies are so afraid to dig into the dark side of life, that they can't reach anyone except other Christians who just want to sit and go "Amen, brother" in church. Anyone who actually wants to think and examine their own faith, and anyone who simply doesn't believe are left on the sidelines laughing at the circus that is Christian entertainment. I was chapperoning for my youth group when Newsboys announced "God's Not Dead 2" and as everyone cheered, I just sat down and put my head in my hands and thought "Great. This fiasco again..."
@autumnhobbit

Lucky Egg Agreed. This is the thing that irritates me about modern christianity; everyone rejects it, sometimes because it tells the truth, but mostly because it's boring and one-dimensional. There's too much uncertainty when the hard questions have to be asked. And there will always be hard questions in life. Does God hate us if He gives us suffering? Does He hate us if it seems as if He's abandoned us completely? Does He hate us if we want to be happy and are denied that? I myself have struggled with spiritual drought for a few years, and it took me a long while to come to terms with it; partially due to the deep-seated belief that if you don't *feel* God's love, you're clearly not praying hard enough or you're hiding a sin or something. Which is odd, considering Jesus Himself underwent significant spiritual drought during the Passion, and some of the things Job says about God? Not at all modern-christian-friendly. But all of it is truth, and I think that's the problem. Even people who claim to be Christian will readily accept whatever is easy instead of whatever is true.

+TheMovieDoctorful The Book of Eli is one of my favourite films of all time, but sadly, most Christians reject films with R rated content (unless it's the Passion) so it's not counted as a Christian film, though it's message is more Christian than every Christian labelled film I've ever seen.
@TheMovieDoctorful
@TheMovieDoctorful 8 лет назад
Lucas M it's a shame because I feel like The Book of Eli is a far better film than the Passion and actually HAD something to say. I love the message about how we live in a world where wicked people will ALWAYS try and corrupt and twist God's word, but even in the midst of all this corruption, we must obey and spread God's word no matter what. Provides a clear distinction between religious authorities who want to actually help and uplift people and religious authorities who use the power of religion to control and dominate.

I'm a Christian, and as much as I love and really enjoy The Book of Eli (I own the dvd), it's not a Christian movie. It has great Biblical illusions, but it's not a Christian movie. Actually, just because a movie can be based from the Bible doesn't make it Christian. And there lies one problem with people demanding better Christian films. People would rather have either an over-the-top fictitious story (I am Legend) or some feel-good story (Heaven is for real) without being exposed to the real Christ (Fireproof, War Room, God's Not Dead 2). Furthermore, less people want the story of Jesus telling them to give up their facebook addiction, or how they may have to leave their 6-figure job for the sake of the gospel, or they may have to walk away friends that although love them but will hinder them from fulfilling what God wants them to do. That doesn't require extraordinary special fx. Honestly, many Christian movies are cheesy. That can be due to a number of reasons. But on the other hand, there are others that are GREAT!! Great storyline, actors, and message.

I'm a Christian and am also an avid movie fanatic and critic. My family and I watched this not too long ago and the opinions of this movie were very mixed. My parents and 13 year old brother absolutely loved it. They loved the story, characters, and message of the movie. My 18 year old brother said he liked it but his overall reaction said the opposite. I personally hate this movie. It sucks. The story is poorly written, the acting is dry and corny, and the dialogue and message is far from good. For the message of this film to be if you're a good Christian then you're marriage will some how revive into something perfect, is incredibly unrealistic and shallow. Don't even get me started on the acting. I know there's movies with worse acting performances but this is the worst one I've seen in recent years. There is nothing convincing about any of the performances in this movie. You're absolutely right that Christian films should be held to the same standard as any other film.

It disturbs me that they make Kirk's character's anger into an amusing anecdote. Like the neighbor is always seeing him beating at trashcans with a baseball bat. Wah-wahhhh. It's not funny, especially when earlier he was screaming into his wife's face. I've been screamed at like that; it's scary. And I have known people with anger issues, and being a Christian didn't keep them from blowing up like that. In fact, I think some Christians, especially men, bottle that stuff up because it's not "Christian" and then it blows. How long till he stops hitting the trashcan and hits the wife? Lust isn't this guy's only problem. He's also angry, and he needs counseling for both. I'm not saying his wife has no part in their problems, but those scenes of him using his superior strength to back her into a corner . . . yeah no. I did like the review. It's nice to see a Christian's perspective on these movies so that people can't immediately just blow criticism off saying "Oh that person's just an atheist." As someone who entered the church at 22, I can tell you a LOT of stuff that does not work to convert someone, and almost every single one of them shows up in these movies. Thank goodness for reviewers like Kevin. I just wish that had been brought up.

It's even been done: "The Passion of The Christ is one example" But they have to stop treating non-christians like myself as straw men, and make oddball claims from young Earth Creationists. If they want to be taken seriously, then they should take themselves seriously.
@SlaveofChrist1

Them making claims based on beliefs of the Bible is good, I'd say. But so many Christian movies don't actually have a correct Bible-based view of what they claim to, and they act like all Christians are sinless and perfectly represent Christ without any struggles or sins or temptations and they make non-Christians look like cunning evil villains who spend their every second of life trying to destroy Christians and not to mention how they make every atheist look like idiots who don't have a clue what they're doing. I know some non-Christians are consumed with hatred for Christians but they have other stuff and aspects of their lives. And I've seen a lot of atheists and non-Christians who are a million times smarter than I'll ever be. I've seen very kind unbelievers too. idk as a Christian I think we should do a better job at being kind and getting our message across lovingly

The thing about this movie is that it takes a lot of the issues it faces for granted. Although it doesn't give you a reason to root for the lead couple to stay together, it expects you to because "Christians don't believe in divorce". As the child of two Christian divorcees, I can say that their divorce is an instance where divorce is really the best option for them and for myself and my siblings. That is obviously not the case for every marriage and I definitely believe that people should work at their marriages. However, I feel that the bigger sin is getting married to the wrong person, which is not helped by the pressure common in the Church to marry and marry young. The message that if you get yourself right with God, all of your other problems can be easily solved (like how he stopped being addicted to porn by throwing his computer away rather than actually addressing the underlying issue) is just plain false and really screamed an ignorance on the creators part of complicated hardships like these... or they're lying for converts and profit, which is much worse.
