@@WEHVideos I have 1 question right now, I'm using a MacBook Pro 16" with an M1 Pro processor and 16 GB RAM and screen mirroring on my 55" TV. I have no problems with performance. I've been using a Sony DualSense controller from a PlayStation 5 which is much better than trying to use the trackpad (mouse) and keyboard. Is there much difference between using a DualSense controller and, say, a Logitech G Saitek Pro flight yoke and pedals system? The yoke and pedals are about $200 each which isn't cheap. But if the yoke and pedals is a lot better than the DualSense controller I don't want to waste time with the controller. Thanks!
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos Год назад
Hi JoeD1, I'm not familiar with the controllers you mention but I can say if you really want to experience flying on the computer as close to real life then the yoke or joystick, pedals, and trim wheel is a must for realism. Check out this video on my recommendations, note the new Honeycomb yoke was not available when this video was made but if you can afford it get it, it's the best for the money. Hope this helps. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9SiJwp9NvlU.html Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos Great information in your video and I can't thank you enough. I still have a question if you don't mind. I've eliminated the Logitech Yoke - it is very inexpensive but appears only partially compatible with Mac. The Honeycomb is only about $25 more than the CH Eclipse but the Eclipse has those thumb pedals. I DON'T plan on dishing out another couple hundred dollars for pedals so do you think I would be better off with the Eclipse or does the Honeycomb have buttons or switches that can act as the pedals? Or are the pedals simply not that big of a deal. I'm more concerned with minimizing hand movement between yoke and keyboard/mouse. I don't think I'll ever fly a real plane - I can't afford it! Thank you very much.
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos Год назад
Hi JoeD1, I really recommend pedals if you can afford them they really make a big difference but if you are not going to go that way the Eclipse with the paddles would be my second best choice. The Eclipse has everything you need even trim wheels and that you will find very important as you learn to fly. I used the Eclipse yoke for many years and it preformed very well. However the Honeycomb is by far the best yoke for the money and once you go that way you won't want to go back. Unfortunately the Honeycomb lacks buttons etc. So go with the Eclipse it should do the job quite well. The trouble you will have is sensitivity in the yoke and paddles on the Eclipse (or any other yoke you purchase in that price range with similar features) they are made of plastic and there is a bit of drag that makes it hard for fine adjustments when needed. Not a big deal but you will find yourself sometimes not able to control the airplane like you want in some circumstances. So if you run into situations where you are struggling it could be the yoke not quite responding to your inputs, keep that in mind. Hope this helped, happy flying keep me posted on your progress :-) Blessings, skip

That was a perfect airfield traffic pattern you pulled off! I'm new to the genre and dont fly a plane irl, MS Flight Simulator 2020 though made me want to try the whole experience from preflight checks all the way to after landing checks like what you did in these videos! I'd love to see you make a series on MS Flight Sim 2020, more tips around traffic patterns, and landings (you made it look so easy and it's nice to know what to do step-by-step)!

Thanks Matt glad to hear the video helped :-) As for Microsoft 2020 I'm not sure yet if I want to get it I don't like their privacy policy, they collect a lot of information from you that I don't think they should collect. I'd love to give it a try but will wait to see if there is a way to keep Microsoft from collecting my personnel information that has nothing to do with flying their simulator. For example, why do they need to collect my Browser history?? Also to bad they don't offer a free demo so you can try it before buying. I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of disappointed people when they find out it won't run well on their older computer. I have a pretty powerful computer but looking at the specs for MS 2020 I would be running at the lower performance levels. Sorry didn't mean to get on my privacy "soap box" or complain. How do you like MS2020 so far? Thanks again for watching glad you liked it :-) Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos no need to apologize! and thank you for sharing your insights! I share the same concerns actually. In my case however, my personal and office "work flows" are deeply ingrained with MS software (from my OS to office apps I use at home and at work) and, as far as I understand, the same privacy restrictions you set for those apply to software that run the XBOX ecology, such as MSFS. I don't mind personalized ads either coz most of the stuff I buy I purchase on a budget, so I'm always looking for good deals. And yes, this was my little attempt to convince you to try MSFS! lol If you haven't yet, there's a 1 month trial for game pass for only $1. You could get that and download the std ver of the game to try it out (if you really wanted to)! I've had so much fun with MSFS. I wasnt a flight sim fan but MSFS just made me want to get my hands dirty and experience the whole thing! The sight seeing is ONE thing, but the ease of trying flight checks and manually manipulating systems is ANOTHER! So much to do and so many places to see! I'm making plans to travel the entire country (Canada) on a cessna 172 (i like avionics on it) on MSFS but am learning the basics from you!

Thanks Matt for you "little attempt" and I probably will give it a try just want to wait to see what the average user thinks and the problems that they experience. I switched to X Plane from Microsoft Flight sim FSX (starting with MSFS 98) when they stopped supporting FSX. I was very disappointed but have found X Plane to have many features I really like even though the scenery isn't that great. I've added photo real scenery (Ortho4XP) and other add-ons that have helped but it's nothing compared to MSFS now for sure!! Hi Skip, first of all, this is so far the best set of tutorials for flying/flight sims that I have seen. Thank you so much for this series! I have a few questions: 1. I noticed that on take off your rate of climb was between 1,000 and 1,500 feet per minute. Is this the recommended rate of climb after take off? 2. Also, when you turned into the crosswind leg of your flight pattern, the rate of climb reduced to a little under 0. Were you reducing power as you turned to crosswind? 3. How can you tell if you are about half a mile out from the runway? Just from experience/visual approximation?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 3 года назад
Hi Jose, Thanks so much, glad you find the videos helpful. For climb you want the best rate of climb based on speed and you find that in the Pilot Operating Handbook (POH) for you airplane. For the Cessna 172N that's 70-80 knots for normal climb out and I choose around 80 kts, I don't pay much attention to FPM at this time. As for turning crosswind again FPM is not the instrument I'd use in the pattern. I may have had a moment where I wasn't climbing according to the instrument but that probably was just for a moment. As for telling how far out you are that comes with experience. Look for landmarks to help you determine distance. By the way, if you are interested, X-Hanger has given me the rights to their Cessna 172N for X Plane 11, the airplane I use in most of my videos, and have allowed me to give it away to anyone who would like to use it for following along in my videos. Hey Skip, I'm glad I found your classes! I bought Xplane 12, can I also install your plane there or will I have conflicts? There are currently only a few aircraft for sale for Xplane 12, does this have to do with what these aircraft look like or can I also install aircraft from Xplane 11?

Hi pfv3462 I'm glad you found them too :-) Yes you can install airplanes made for X Plane 11 into X Plane 12. Actually you can put any airplane in XP12 Aircraft folder and if it's not compatible it just will not show up in your list of airplanes when you run XP or it won't run correctly so just delete the airplane from the Aircraft folder. hi Skip, thank you for putting together this set of tutorials and making them concise!. I have a few questions. Why is the carb heat needed during landing?. When you kill power it means throttle all the way back or idle cut off?. How do you slow down after the climb - use attitude or power? why?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 лет назад
Hi Vin, Here is a link to my video on Carb Heat, it should answer your questions check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qtzIgxXU1TE.html Sorry the "kill power" is confussing :-( What I meant was pull all the way to Idle not shutting off the engine. I'm a bit confused with your last question, sorry. Normally you would not be slowing down after a climb, the climb usually will cause you to loose speed. So If you are climbing at the recommended rate of climb according to your POH when you get close to your desired altitude you would push the nose down and trim for level flight. Once you level off you will start to pick up speed. Also, because in most cases you will be at full power for a climb you will need to trim as you pick up speed to maintain you altitude and then adjust power for the speed you want. Hope this helps, let me know. Blessings, skip

For taxing on the runway, we just use the rudder to move forward with both feet pressed on the rudder?. Go left on left rudder, go right on right rudder? There is no effect of controlling the yoke?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 лет назад
Hi Richard, Yes you use the rudder pedals to steer the airplane on the ground, your yoke or joystick will not do anything for steering on the ground. You also will probably need to use the brakes a bit to steer since the pedals are not enough to make sharp turns. So when you need to make a sharp turn use the rudder pedals and toe brakes together. So for a sharp left turn you would use the left rudder pedal and left toe break as needed at the same time to make the turn. Hope this helps. Blessings, skip

When taxiing do you keep your rpms at 1,000, or do you bring them down for turns? As I speed up, I find it almost impossible to turn well using the rudder pedals. And I’ve seen elsewhere that I shouldn’t use the brakes much. I have the saitek rider pedals that have differential toe breaks.
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 4 года назад
Hi Derrick, Turning on the ground in an airplane requires the "right" speed. For the Cessna 172N I fly in real life if I'm going a bit fast it's hard to turn, the front wheel only turn so far so "hard" turns are not possible without using the brakes, at least for me. In the simulator it's easy to be going too fast and turns are then very difficult so watch your speed. Remember the air speed indicator is not too accurate at very slow speeds especially on the ground so look at the ground to get some idea of how fast you are going. You can sorta tell if you are going too fast if the airplane bounces around a lot as you taxi. Bottom line if you are slow enough turns should not be a problem and sometimes you will need to use the brakes to. Practice taxiing around your airport at different speeds to get a feel for how to handle your airplane on the ground, with practice you will get it right :-) Blessings, skip

@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 7 лет назад
Hi Oscar, Thank a lot, glad to hear the videos are helping. VFR stands for Visual Flight Rules meaning you must be able to see all around you, no flying in clouds or low visibility conditions. There are specific rules for VFR and IFR. IFR stands for Instrument Flight Rules and requires a pilot to be qualified or certified to fly IFR which allows you to fly in poor visibility conditions or in the clouds. I realize this is a very simple (if not poor) definition of VFR and IFR, there is so much more to know, You might search the web for a more detailed explanation. Blessings, skip

WEH Videos thanks Skip Great response Again learning alot IFR means flying only by instruments on very low visibility or not at all correct? Flying at night will be the same? I will be taking PP lessons at Reid Hillview soon Just took my introductory flight
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 7 лет назад
Hi Oscar, You are correct about IFR but there is much more. Usually IFR flights are flights that have been planned and filed with ATC so you have what is called flight following. You are always in contact with a control tower or "Center". They monitor you flight on radar and warn you about other airplanes in your area and more. I can not explain it all here and, again, this is a very simple explanation. Flying at night does not require an instrument rating, so no flying at night is not the same. You can fly VFR at night and you are required to do that on you way to you PP certificate. How did you like your introductory flight? Were you allowed to take off and land? For my first flight I was shocked when the instructor had me taxi takeoff and land. He just talked me through every step and naturally he was ready to take over at anytime and he controlled the rudder and may have done somethings I didn't know he was doing and that's all it took to get me hooked. Let me know how your lessons go. Blessings, skip

Thank you very much for making this excellent video series! I am a beginner. These videos are extremely helpful. I have a question. Why I start a new flight on the Benton field on my x-plane 11 it always starts on the end of the runway and is ready to take off instead of the parking spot or the taxiway as shown in the video? Thank you!
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 лет назад
Hi Jian, There are a couple ways to have your flight start somewhere other that on the runway ready for takeoff. When you first start XP select New Flight then by LOCATION select Customize, under START you have the option of RAMP or RUNWAY. You will have different options to choose from for RAMP depending on the airport you are at. As you select each location option you will see where that location is on the map to the right. The second option is to save a flight to load. So taxi to a location at the airport where you want your flight to start then from the File Menu select "Save Flight" Next time you start XP select "Load Saved Flight" and select the flight you saved. This is a really nice option because you can save a flight in the air, so you can be on final approach and pause the program and save the flight, then you can start your flight on final. This is a good way to practice your landings instead of choosing the 3 mile approach, save a flight with a one mile approach. Flights will be saved in whatever condition you set up so if you shut the engine(s) down that's how the flight will start, engine(s) off. I have a lot of saved flights under different weather conditions and aircraft so think about that as you are flying you might want to repeat a segment of a flight later so save a flight. This will not effect the current flight, you can save as many flights as you want from one flight. Hope this helps. Blessings, skip

I'm having trouble with my takeoffs. Maybe I'm heavy-handed, but when I pull back on the yoke, the plane REALLY pitches up. When I try to trim for 70-80 knots, the plane REALLY pitches downward. I see others do this and they seem so relaxed at the controls. I feel all tensed up. I'm clutching for dear life. Any suggesting? BTW, I'm using the CH yoke and peddles. Thanks...

Hi RbSims, Check the calibration of your yoke then play with the sensitivity controls for the yoke to find a position that works for you. (It may be necessary to have different setting for different airplanes you fly.) Find a video on how to set up controls (I don't have one, sorry). I'm not sure about the trim. Do you have a separate trim wheel or is it on the yoke. If it's on the yoke you may need to calibrate it also but I'm not sure. If it's separate you need to calibrate it to. I have a separate trim wheel and I find I need to operate the trim wheel "before" using it in flight. I make it part of my start up. So before take off I move the trim and watch the trim indicator and it "jumps" the first time I move it and I need to re-trim to set the indicator to take off position. If I forget to do this first I have the same problem you describe. Let me know if this helps. Blessings, skip

Good morning, Skip. How are you and your family? I badly need your help. I am finally ready to run X-plane 11 with CH Yoke and Rudder Pedals which are the ones you recommend. I have two problems: 1) I accelerate the Cessna to 2500 rpm and it does not move. I step on the pedals and the plane just goes into a wild circle and sometimes it even overturns. When I try to calibrate the pedals, the following happens: 1) Axis 1 (right toe brake) goes all the way to the right as a blue line. When I slide the left pedal, a red line goes halfway and I clicked Accepted. When I control Yaw with left and right pedals, Axis 3 moves up to the middle. But: 1) When I press right pedal to brake, Axis 2 (left brake goes all the way to the right. and 2) When I brake with the left pedal, Axis 3 (Yaw) goes all the way to the right. Skip, I know there is something wrong here. What is it and how can I fix it? Why doesn't the plane move? I am almost sure the plane does not move because there is something wrong with the pedals. Please, help me, Skip. I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. And I thank you for your kindness. Larissa

Hi Larissa, So sorry to hear you are having troubles! I have no idea way "things" are acting the way they are, I'll do some research. Have you looked this up at the forum? Have you used another airplane to see if it acts the same way? You might try reinstalling X Plane 11. Don't uninstall it just install over the one you have and don't add any scenery so it will install faster if that's possible and make sure you have the latest version. My dear Skip. You are so sweet. Thank you very much for taking some of your precious time to write. Late last night, I fixed the problem. The CH rudder pedals had been incorrectly configured. Left toe brake was assigned at the place for the right toe brake and vice-versa. Yaw was not configured, and so the plane was constantly braked. All set now, up and flying. Again Happy Thanksgiving. I fly helicopter and I found there are some differences in fixed-wing. E.g., When I am in mid-field downwind, I pull the throttle gradually to reduce the RPM according to the suggested POH setting, and therefore the airspeed will subsequently be reduced and the airplane starts descending. Then, I apply the flap during the "Final" to achieve the landing speed and an appropriate descending angle (Red on top, and White below)? Anything I need to adjust the yoke? Should I close the throttle first before mixture off? I will do this when the cylinder head temperature is cool enough to be shut down. In your video, you instruct to reduce the airspeed but didn't mention how to do it. Sorry for the stupid questions.
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 лет назад
Hi Richard, Sorry I took so long to reply, been away with family. Everything you said about landing is fine just remember no two landings are the same, winds and weather will effect everything so you just need to control speed when landing. Downwind 70-80kts. base slowing to 70kts final 60kts. Descending at around 500fpm or so 250fpm on final. Naturally you will need to make adjustments to these figures as necessary! Conditions will determine throttle settings and flap settings. For example when landing into a strong head wind you don't need full flaps in fact that could make it a pit harder to control the airplane if the winds are too strong, you may not need flaps at all. You may need a little power to keep you speed up also in a strong head wind. If you are landing into a 20mph head wind you indicated airspeed will be roughly 20mph higher than you ground speed. As for adjustments with the yoke use the yoke to control speed and power to control descent. In other words if you are too high reduce power do NOT push the nose down you will pick up speed. Conversely If you are too low don't pull back on the yoke you will loose speed so add power as necessary to maintain your altitude until you get back on glide slope. Again, everything depends on the conditions you are flying in, there is no "set in stone" rules of thumb for landing. You will figure this out as you spend more and more time landing and learning how your airplane is effected under different weather conditions. Reducing airspeed, yet again, depends on conditions. Normally reducing power will reduce airspeed while you try to maintain altitude so first start pulling back on the throttle. If you try to maintain altitude your speed should drop pretty fast. If you are not slowing down fast enough add as much flaps as necessary to get to your desired speed (Obviously only add flaps when within recommended air speeds). When shutting down (Cessna 172) you should already be parked and at idle so just pull out the mixture to cutoff, cylinder head temp should not be an issue. Hope this helps Richard, by the way there are NO stupid questions!!! Blessings, skip

Also, the VASI lights don't seem to work in that scenery airport, and I can't start from the parking spots either. Anyway I can correct that?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 7 лет назад
Hi Rohit, Learning to make the turn to final takes a bit of pratcice and in a simulator it's actually harder than in real life. Just keep practicing and look for ground references such as buildings or roads to help you determine when to start the turn. As for the VASI lights, well that's my fault there are no lights!! I forgot I had to add those lights to the scenery package. I will do another video explaining that and show you how to add the lights, sorry for the confusion. In the mean time there are PAPI lights with the default airport, no building but it does have approach lights. There are 4 lights side by side, when you are at the correct approach attitude the two lights on the left will be white and the two on the right red. All white = to high, all red = too low. To start from the parking area you need to set up a "situation" in X Plane. You will have to taxi over to the parking area and park where you want to start your flight. From the File Menu select Save Flight. You have a choice of "Replay" and "Situation" click on "Situation" then give it a name and save. To load the situation select Load Flight. You can create a situation anywhere when you are in flight. Create a situation on the downwind leg of your flight then you can practice your turn to base and final without having to fly the whole pattern. Thanks for bringing this to my attention! Blessings, sklip

Thanks, I installed the VASI lights as instructed in the part 4 of the series :). Also saving the flight was really useful and I saved the flight in the downwind leg, now I can fly only the base leg and final. I decided to create a camera at about 60 degree angle to the left, previously I used to lose sight of the runway, now I keep an eye on it directly from the base leg until the final. Instead of frame rates I decided to put the RPM information on the top. Now I don't have to guess the RPM anymore :). Actually I had downloaded WED before and tried to install VASI by myself in that airport. But I only saved it, and it was not working, after watching your video I was like, Ooo I have to export the scenery as well :). I used the Ctrl+Numpad numbers method, it works quite well. I've installed faceTrackNoIR as well, which worked nice with default settings, but I couldn't get to other views, so I installed xCamera as well. I was worried about fps with all the plugins, but so far X-plane is holding up quite well. So far I've installed reshade, xCamera, hd sceneries of the region from alPilotx, and the airport scenery. I want to try ortho4xp for scenery in the immediate areas around the airport, and maybe some days fly near the Himalayas. I'd also want to try out fsEconomy for X-plane, but right now am just trying to follow the tutorial series. Right now things bothering me is few trees in the final in my scenery which is not present in the real world I guess right near the runway 33. Also the approach to runway 33 seems a bit hilly, and I end up bit high on approach. Thanks for the answers and the followup video. I really like the way you explain things and the short to the point videos.
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 7 лет назад
HI Rohit, Wow you have done a lot! I just run X Plane as it came "out of the box" so to speak. For the trees near the runway you can use WED to get rid of them. Open Benton Field in WED. Notice the two squares, one at the end of RWY15 and one over the buildings on the left, these are exclusion areas. To add exclusions areas click the icon with the RED X for Exclusions (Left column, second icon from the bottom) then click on a point where you want to start excluding trees and drag the cursor over the area. when you unclick a box will appear. To the right you will see "selection" and Name, Class, Locked, Hidden, and Exclusions. Next to Exclusions you will see "None" with arrows to the right. Click on the arrows and check trees and they will be excluded in that area. Save and Export and no more trees :-) Benton Field is on a little hill, RWY 15 is about five feet higher than 33 so this can make it look like you are on the right approach but are not, I will be discussing this if a future video. There is nothing you can do to correct loss of vacuum 99% of the time you must land and have the system checked by a mechanic. 13:06 After so much effort, I can't understand the altimeters/actual altitudes... I don't understand why you say that we are going to turn at 500 feet, yet you turn at 1500/1600 feet. Why are you 1,000 feet above 500? I don't understand why, if you're flying the pattern at the same airport, you don't set the altimeter to 0 upon takeoff. Why do you have to do all this math in the air? So, when you're landing, you're not actually touching down at '0' on the altimeter, you're really touching down at '717' or something??? So you have to remember the altitude of the airport that you're landing at each time? That seems prone to error! I just can't understand it :(
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 5 лет назад
Hi Zhōu yǔ Qiáo, To get the correct altitude displayed on your altimeter it is necessary to make adjustments for atmospheric pressure from time to time during your flight. When you set the BARO's to match the air pressure for where you are then the altimeter will display the correct altitude (above sea level). Here is a video on the altimeter that should help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oT7M1RHMUfQ.html The reason I said we will turn at 500ft is because that's the normal procedure for a lot of airports but not all. At Benton Field they don't want you to make a turn from runway heading until you are 500ft above the surface. Each airport has "recommend" takeoff and landing procedures, this is for safety and noise abatement reasons. The traffic pattern for many airports is 1000 feet above the ground or airport elevation. So if the airport is at 500ft above sea level the traffic pattern would be 1500ft unless there is a specific reason not to be, again, based of safety and noise abatement needs. For example San Carlos Airport is California USA has a traffic pattern of 805.5 ft which is less that 1000ft above the surface. If you set your altimeter to "0" you will not have the correct altitude displayed. For example since Benton Field's elevation or "altitude" is 720 ft. you must set the altimeter to 720ft or get the ATIS report and set the BAROs to whatever ATIS reports, 29.92 (standard pressure), 29.85, 30.05 or whatever. As I said the altimeter works off air pressure so to the have your altimeter display your correct altitude you must make corrections frequently as the air pressure changes all the time. So if you set the altimeter to Zero while on the ground at Benton Field and wanted to climb to 1000ft you actually would be at 1720ft, 720 feet above where you think you would be when your altimeter displays 1000ft. While that may not sound horrible If you were at an airport in Denver Colorado USA the airport elevation would be around 5000ft. Setting the altimeter to Zero there would give you an error of 5000ft so when you climbed to an indicated altitude of 5000ft on your altimeter you would actually be flying at 10,000ft. If you left from an airport in Denver at 5000f and set the altimeter to Zero then flew to the California coast, elevation 50ft your altimeter would quickly become useless as the needle would sit on Zero as soon as you started descending below the 5000ft. Finally your don't have to do any math just set the altimeter's BAROs from time to time by contacting ATIS in flight. Finally before you fly to any airport you should read the charts for the airport you are flying to so you know the airport elevation and traffic pattern altitude. Unfortunately flying is not like driving a car where you can just "go". You must do a lot of planning before taking off so you don't get in trouble, there are lots of videos on flight planning you can check out. Hope this helps please let me know. Blessings, skip
