This was not a simple renovation lawn renovation. It needed a lot of preparation work. The soil itself was very old and tired and had been compacted and compounded with lots of stones, rocks and bits of cement that had been left by the builders who had built an extension onto this home.
So it's safe to say that most of this job would involve me removing stones.. lots of stones.. In fact I ended up filling around 7 bags with stones, mostly by hand.
The soil also needed to be loosened up and levelled a little. So using a variety of rakes as well as my lawn scarifier I was able to get the soil ready for seeding.
The whole job including unloading the van and loading the van after took from 8am till 3pm
Tools and materials used:
The compost I've used for the last 2 to 3 years:
lawnright.co.uk/compost. (there is a discount code on there too).
Emerald Green (improves seed germination) & Turfsolv (for grub control and plant health): lawnright.co.uk/shop
The grass seed used:
Hurrells premium front lawn seed www.hmseeds.co.uk/product-pag...
Tools used:
My Stihl scarifier RL540 www.stihl.co.uk/en/p/lawn-sca...
Hand tools:
Premium Lawn levelling lute: amzn.to/3PMaL95
Bulldog Springbok rake (had this 5 years still going strong): amzn.to/3PMaItV
Bulldog Leaf rake: amzn.to/3TlUgBn
Wide landscapers rake: amzn.to/3IFhfT1

Just came accross. It‘s amazing how the garden changes from „ugly“ to „will be nice“. The homeowner should clean the patio additionally 😊 Great work!

Hi Shaun, can I please ask what topsoil have you used here or would you recommend for levelling a big garden in general? I'm in a big project of renovating a very undulant lawn in disrepair for many years. I've watched a lot of your videos and they have helped me make the renovation plan, really appreciate all of your work to share the videos and knowledge in a practical way. Now I am at the stage of levelling the lawn, will need about 5 cubic meters topsoil, so would like to get some high quality topsoil to reduce risk. Thanks!
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Месяц назад
Hi :)_. So you would need either root zone or a very sandy topsoil that is screened so its easily workable into the dips.. In this video the final stages are simply organic compost to get some goodness back into the lawn and cover the seeds :). Best of luck with it all!
@faren421
@faren421 Месяц назад
@@LawnRight Thanks a lot for the reply! Really appreciate the info/tips. Sorry to ask again but would you recommend some sources or online shops, which sell the suitable topsoil? I have phoned a few local companies but they either don't know the spec or the ph is too high unfortunately.

Great job Shaun, hopefully they’ll get the stone work pressure washed in time for what should turn out to be a lovely looking garden, looking forward to seeing the progress on this one. I’ve got a small lawn (50sqm) is it ok to reseed it by hand or would you always recommend using a small seed spreader?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
Hi.. by hand is totality fine.. I did this for many years.. the drop spreader made life easier :)

Thanks for a great video Shaun - out of interest, roughly, what is the coverage per bag per sqm using the compost roller? (I'm sizing up a job using the roller for the first time!).
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
Hi using the very fine compost maybe 5 to 10 sq metres it depends how fine it is... Pure sand would come out really fast

Lovely job. My neighbour had someone from a local gardening firm come over and re-seed some bare patches where his lawn bordered the footpath. Over the last week all of the seed has been eaten by pigeons. At one point there were twenty or so all feeding and getting fat. I’ve asked him to to get a few bags of compost and he can have some of my seed to do a proper job. I’m still waiting for some warmer weather to re seed as last year we had frosts in late March.

Great job, but why don't you use sand (quartz sand), or are the soils in the UK naturally sandy? Here in Germany the lawn channels always recommend putting a lot of sand in the ground. What do you say about that? Nice greetings from Germany
@LawnRight
@LawnRight 3 месяца назад
Hi I try and match what's there (unless its clay), so mostly medium soil... coastal areas would be more sandy though
