It's that time of year and time for a few long evenings. Not bad at all for year one and plenty more than needed for our livestock (at the moment). 😉

Back in my farming days we did 3000 + square bales of hay in Ireland. Circa 1990,s. Small sheds and yards so needed them. 2 prong pikes 2 people, Ferguson 188 and a flat bed trailer. Beer tasted better after it!

When I was a child we used to go camping on a farm during the hay making session, everyone there used to help collecting the hay, great memories of being on top of the stack trying to sort the bales as they were thrown up😁

Back in the early seventies I lived on a farm in Kent and as a ten year old always remember with fondness the field being hay bailed and sitting on the back of the tractor. One of the most amazing smells that lives with you forever. Love your videos and I'm sure your children will look back on these happy memories.

Took me back to stacking bales. Blisters were the worst and then stacking in a hot dusty barn with hayfever. Always more of a laugh in a group. I last did it 30 years ago. Still remember the aches, pains and blisters though. Keep it up BTW it's great to be on your new adventure with you. Loving the variety in posting and sharing in your excitement in your new projwct. My favourite channel at the moment.

I remember my family doing square bales when I was Eden's age. We didn't have the wagon that dropped them in big groups, we walked behind the baler and loaded them onto a trailer like you are but with the trailer cruising slow and all us cousins carrying bales to the trailer. Our neighbors were elderly brothers and were still stacking hay with pitchforks in the late 70s!

Tim, I really recommend you buy yourself a couple of hay hooks, they are cheap and once you have the knack they are excellent for moving small bales about day to day and when getting the bales in like in this video. They save your hands and back a lot and will save you a lot of time. There a few videos on RU-vid showing the techniques.

With a bit of practice you can stack the small bales 12-14' tall with a pitch-fork on your own so stack them high and keep the wagon close and you don't have to handle them as much. But great first time effort! :-)

Back in the late 70's early 80's that's all we had, hay, and more hay.!!. and about 10 to 12 thousand of them, all done with just my brother and father. Round bales didn't come til about 1986. Were great times, tho weather seemed more reliable then. I'm 55 now and still make about 7 or 8 acres, same way as you. I never really knew any different, so don't see anything hard about it. Welcome to farming, l wouldn't want to do anything else.
@JohntyNich

Proper load on that last load. On the second round stick them longways on the outside, other way on down the middle bridging. If they are fairly tight, they shouldn’t move too much. It also helps alternating on the mew/stack to keep it safer. Not too big a problem with the small amounts you are stacking but it might surprise you how many more you can get in.

Great video. Brings back memories of working on my Uncles farm, bringing in the hay bales as a teenager. Hard work! My Uncle had a taller trailer so we had to lift the bales higher. It's a two man job at the least. Never saw red kites on the field when we were young but I do now. Saw red kites yesterday doing exactly the same thing. You will sleep well after that.

Working with a brewery is a fantastic idea. I recall watching something about revitalizing the rural communities in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick where they focused on some former city-dwellers (and non-East Coasters) who had purchased farms. One young couple decided they wanted to grow their own grain and hops for the microbrewery they wanted to start. They collaborated with a local dairy farm: the brewery sends the used grain and hops to the dairy for the cows to eat and in return they received manure to improve the soil (which was rather depleted, if I remember correctly). Win-win, as you said.

Well done Tim! I don't envy you in the slightest - hay bailing season is HARD work! We have a small holding ourselves and I won't lie - I always dread this time of year! 🤣 Those bails around the edges of the field are always the hardest - like 10 ton weights! The best part I found was either the shower afterwards, or the few well earnt cans of beer that we put away afterwards!

You need hay tines for your loader. That will make short work of loading and unloading your hay tailer. Re the extra bails, definately sell them on. Put the cash into new kit. Re the pig grain from a brewy what a great idea. If you secured a small silo you'd be able to pick it up in bulk and store it for a while rather then smaller trips?

Tim do I remember correctly that you play rugby? Surely this would be a great training session for the boys. I have a memory of an interview with the great Peter Winterbottom and when asked what his training regime was he said I don’t really have one - while picking up hay bails and throwing them up into a hay loft like they were no heavier than the rugby ball. Also rugby players generally work for beer and food 😀

You may find it useful to store hay either in a shed with a good roof but no walls, the alternative is to store the hay away from the walls. Stone walls tend to encourage dust, and even galvanised walls are not ideal. If rain looks probable, any hay you can't pick up can be piled in 6's or 8's, this way only the top bales can be rained on, when you pick up bales that may be damp, spread them out so they get plenty of opportunities to dry, (we call this tumble stacking, it involves more handling but the bales will dry better).

Flog the excess hay - you don't want it, others do. Make a few quid and offset against inevitable costs. I have helped hay stacking on nearby farm years ago all local farms helped out and moved between farms and ended the day with an excellent meal in one of the farm houses.

i would suggest using pallets on the floor eliminates waste as moisture may rise up and spoil the edge of the bale,or next year leave the same bales as the base you used to be able to buy a grab that would pick 8 bales up at a tile not sure if it would fit you tractor though

Just as an add on to the comment regarding the possible build up of temperature, when my father was smallholding he had a couple of longish metal rods that he pushed into the stack to monitor the build up of temperature before any problems occurred, nothing scientific as it was 60 years ago but his hands told him if he needed to make some air space.
