From a fellow right-foot pronator to another, Emily, I can totally relate! No, I've never tried a Salomon shoe but have been intrigued by them for quite a while now. So, Thanks for this candid and detailed review, which gives me a lot to think about. As for pronating, being an older dude in my 50's, what has begun to work for me, for about a year, is to tape-up my right foot inseam before each run, for support. This helps to counteract the pronating action just enough to avoid any mild discomfort. Not a perfect solution, but seems to work for me. Thanks Again!
Great review Emily - its something I would be interested in trying as well - my stirde is fairly neutral so maybe it would work. The one it reminds me a lot of is the original Puma Deviate Nitro Elite which was a great shoe for me with the Puma grip in bad weather as well
Great review! Fellow MOPer here, loving my lightweight (6.5 oz) plateless Salomon Aero Volts for workouts/speedy stuff. I don’t understand how it isn’t getting more attention? I use it as a foil for my superstack maxcush long run shoes (NB SC trainer v1) to help keep me light off my feet. It’s my best-ventilated shoe, with excellent traction, so was great for the summer. I’m also over pronator but this is very stable for me, and a moderate width, not too narrow, but, like yours, these fit CLEARLY too large. Maybe give them a try for “punchier” paces, similar use case to topo cyclone 2’s.
Phantasm 2 was by far the best film in the Phantasm film series, so I'm assuming this shoe is better than than the first one and the models that follow will only get worse. Life imitates art... It is a cool looking shoe though...
I love Salomon trail shoes, I don't understand why this shoe is so heavy, I get that it has a carbon plate but their S/Lab Pulsar 2 comes in at 175 grams or 6.2 ounces.
Well, thanks for the honest guidance. Salomon promo-advertising trails that we mostly see are far from reality. Among other 'sports' companies, Salomon is known for its hard, uncomfortable and less durable shoes.
Do you size up in your running shoes? I normally wear an 8 but tend to size up a full size because I don’t even remotely like the feeling of my toes hitting the front of the shoes. But I’m wondering if there is too much room? Because my toenails still bruise. Nothing terrible, but is that normal?
Your toenails still bruising in a bigger size suggest your feet are sliding forward due to not having a good enough midfoot lockdown. A thumb's width (.5 size up over street shoes but more importantly whatever gives you that much space) is enough as long as you’re locked in. You need to find shoes with lacing that allows you to get that.
