First OVERNIGHT at the CABIN! | THIS MAN Only Eats Wild Food! Ep5

We spend a wintry first night at the off grid small cabin in the woods with a special guest who only eats wild food! We are now working on the outhouse: • Building Outhouse at O...
I am joined by Jeremy (One Wildcrafter) who is only eating wild food for a whole year!
Jeremy (One Wildcrafter): • Catch and Cook | Woode...
Cutting boards by Adam Craig: www.inthestick...
We spend the weekend mostly catching up on lost time, but we also set traps for cotton tail and try for some off-game like crow. We go off and check my coyote live-trap and eat plenty of wild food including goose, hare, squirrel, raccoon, maple syrup, maple candy, yarrow spices, bear fat and snack on black walnuts.
We will talk about what it's really like to live off wild food and if Jeremy is able to keep healthy, fit and strong over the course of the year. We talk about what challenges he has faced during his "big wild year."
Whenever we run out of lumber, we just mill more wood from trees that are right on the property. We'll use handtools like hammers, axes, saw, shovels and prybars, but will also use power tools including chainsaws, winches, atv's, and a chopped up SUV whenever it is convenient.
We will be using cedar and spruce trees that are standing dead so we don't have to kiln dry the wood or let it season.
Please follow along with the full playlist in order to understand the full construction of the tiny cabin.
In this series we use materials around us to construct a small forest cabin.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

I want you guys to know how much your videos have brought life back to my great grandmother. I really think she was happiest as a child living in the mountains of Colorado near Silverton. Because of your videos she has been educating all of us of her life and how important conservation is and how much we throw away. Last weekend we rented a cabin. Granny helped us buy groceries. We wanted to experience what her life was like. We all were amazed as we watched her cook " from scratch" everything. Nothing from a can or from a box. When we wrre done eating in the evening she tpld us the most AMAZING stories of living in the mountains of Colorado. We all came home with a new look at everything. I cant find the words. We are planning to do this next weekend again. We ALL cant wait. I love what you say about kids need to be outside more. We probably look like idiots to you guys. I hope you guys keep making videos. Maybe we should build a cabin soon.

I dress my own game, season it and then cook it for myself and anyone else that will try it. I have eaten all of your wild game except skunk, beaver and bear; mainly because I have no access to the beaver and bear. I have eaten bobcat and I haven't seen you eat that, even down here in Texas. As a kid on a farm in the 50's, I was raised eating wild food, including plants. It supplemented our home garden veggies and fruits. I learned to shoot a single shot .22 at about age 9, and Dad and I shot pigeons off the barn roof, and back in the woods and fields were squirrels, cottontails, raccoon, woodchuck and game birds - we did not own or use a shotgun. As I grew older and moved to the city, I got away from hunting and eating game, but still relish some venison or small game that a friend sometimes gives me. I got hungry watching you guys eat! And I found a new use for the Canadian maple syrup that is stocked in my basement pantry!

Tell Jeromy he can use the cattail roots as starch for his bread. works perfect. Just clean the roots, hammer them , pull them appart and put it in water. The water will become milky, the starch will sink to the bottom of the container. just pour the grubby water out and let the starch dry out. it will be poudery after and you can use it to keep the natural flour and seeds together.

Then you have a yummy stock powder to take with you. I always freeze the leftover broth from stews etc. Makes an amazing base for other meals.

Foraging food is awesome food. I live off grid and forage as much as possible. I collect rain water also. I feel the best I have in years. I am 1 year 5 months into my journey. I have heritage breed chickens, goats, bees for honey. Wild grapes, elderberries & other berries. Grains are the biggest challenge. I do use organic heritage tubers, sweet potatoes, to sub for grains. Those are gluten free foods. Goat milk, cheese and fermented products are great. You can do this indefinitely. It is a full time job but so rewarding.

Guys. Make bone broth from everything you kill and freeze it. It makes a perfect brazing liquid for tougher meats. I have never eaten tough rabbit or squirrel when brazing. Bone broth, wild onions, wild garlic, wild mushrooms. Sear the meat first. Braise an hour or so.

I don’t think u should pick on Jer about his sweet tooth with the maple syrup/sugar. He is giving up far more carbs than anyone else and is being true to his dietary lifestyle. If you gave up your standard carbs intake for 57 days you’d make the most of any carbs u could get ahold of to compensate. We need to listen to our bodies more and give in to the hunger it tells us to. Our bodies know what we need and communicate this by cravings.

Really enjoyed the footage playing while you guys enjoyed the meal. Respect the thoughtful sharing of conservation versus reality. The knowledge you're sharing is what we are lacking as a modern society. Thinking about what a person needs to sustain life realative to their location, is something left out of education. Seems like planned dumbing down to be dependent on convenience? Our relatives knew exactly what & when to collect edibles. They over indulged when appropriate which made some foods special, like berries. Being able to buy something out of season takes away all of the "special" that our realatives knew. So many deep thoughts inspired by you two. Thank you for what you're doing! Late add: the little one & the sleeping bunnies 😂 so sweet.

I’ve been watching this as if it came out this week or sometime soon and I was like “how are you on day sixty if you started on January 1st and we’re not even in February?? Does time work different in Canada??” Then I realized. It was posted a year ago 🤣

I really enjoyed this episode. I’m in a wheelchair and I don’t get out much. I use to do a lot of fishing camping and hunting before the accident. Think you very much.

Sucks. Hopefully you can still find a way to get doing some of that stuff even still.

I find squirrel and rabbit turns out much better if I sear the outside in a cast iron then roast/boil it in the oven for an hour. Also leaving it soak in salt water for a few days seems to improve flavor as well as tenderize the meat a bit. One of my favorite meals with rabbit is to make a stew with Guinness beer, beef broth, kale, onions and potatoes.

Just listened to the comments about this individual who claims what you built is all wrong. It makes me laugh when people comment about how your doing it all wrong , BUT NEVER offer to come and lend a hand and help. We call these people "know it all" and TROLLS. It's easier said then done to pay them no mind. You guys did awesome and much respect from me guys 👍👍👍

When you've watched a guy eat 2 day old warm turtle remains out of a ziploc bag, you take their word when he says acorn flour is bitter. Probably be staying away from that one lol
