WHEN YOU HEAR A KNOCK......STOP.......and change the oil make sure the oil light is working. jump it to ground and see the light on the dash before you proceed...

I would think that starting an engine which has been standing idle for 30 years could cause unnecessary damage. I would open it up and rebuild it without staring it at all.

My goodness. For the future, never start the engine like this again. Starting an engine after several decades is not such an art. The art is not to destroy him. The engine may be in a condition that does not require a complete overhaul. But after such unprofessional interventions, it needs to be restored. I wanted to cry.

Wow. No check if the engine is even turning freely. you keep dumping tons of fuel down the intake, there's dirt and dust everywhere being sucked into the engine. It's knocking more by the Minute but you just keep on going. Is this restoration or destruction? I usually love barn find videos but this makes me sad....

I can’t believe you’re trying to turn the key over on a motor that hasn’t been even turned over a prime with fuel drain and new oil in it checking the spark plugs out to see if they’re foed out or if the motor seized it just boggles my mind how silly you’re being by doing what you’re doing!!

Hi CT, When you pull it out and put it on a run stand make sure it's running on all cylinders. Sounded like running on a couple if that and back firing. That knock sounded really bad. Hopefully didn't do any internal damage? You have a strong starter for sure

CT :) think past 60 months warranty for maybe 35 years ago Lol and bath up then check engine oil plus others fluid on first start up! One eye monster car 1976 Porsche of headlights check out Lol ! Yes the adjustment is for headlights go easy on fast and slow is gentle!

Knocking the head light hoping to resurrect it was absolutely fabulous!

Excellent find. Sad state of condition. I was 16 years young when this car was built. The crash helmet looks very 1970s. These cars weren't a common sight on our roads here in New Zealand. I thought they looked similar to the Fiat Bertone sports car. Great that you got the lift up lights in the front fixed. Great restoration work.

Cool 914. Might save you an alternator sometime if you make sure to always disconnect the negative first and conversely connect the negative last. Especially on older cars a spark on the positive terminal can blow a diode out of the alternator.

The engine is in the right place but wow the access is even tighter up top than my 986.

I almost bought one of these in Koblenz, Germany in 1981 but didn't really need a car. Looking at it now, I wish I'd bought it!

Not being unkind here, but you were putting way too much fuel into the intake when trying to start. The extended crank and gradually starting to fire up was the engine clearing the cylinders of all that fuel (and oil). The engine will probably need a refresh/rebuild anyway, but use less fuel. A trickle is all that is needed. It will start/fire easier if the mixture is closer to right. Use a 2-stroke mix to lubricate the cylinders during test fires. They sell sprays that have cylinder lubricant in them and atomize and burn far more readily.

I would do a compression test adjust valves tune up and get injectors cleaned professionally and see what happens

Hi CT, just some thoughts from an old 914 owner. Pay no attention to the naysayers! Check and see if this is a 1976 model! This was the year Volkswagen canceled the project. Only a few 76 models were made ( less than 5000). They took the remainder of the 411 engines they ordered and produced the 912e. There were 20,000 plus of the 72’s, so if you need scrap it, there are plenty more. Honestly, when I saw the video of it, my first thoughts were it was beyond hope. There will be lots of unseen rust that make it dangerous to drive unless you do a deep and total rebuild. And I say that from sad experience. Mine rusted in a closed heated garage until you had to jack it up to get the doors to close. Looks like it is a good base to start from and it has the potential to be the most financially rewarding of all you have done. BTW it is a VW engine not Porsche! The 914-6 had a 2.0 six cylinder but they quit making them in 71. Good luck and look forward to more!
