There is no “studio” version of this song. This is the first song the time was played and it was played live, with an audience along with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra…. And it is simply perfection!
I was a metalhead in the Bay Area and I was in the school symphony. Going to the SFSymphony was a dream of mine since I was a kid. I remember being blown away when I heard this song and its still one of my faves to this day.
Cliff Burton was 24 yrs old... they were on tour in Europe and the bus hit black ice, Cliff was thrown out of the bus and the bus landed on him... He was possibly the greatest bassist to ever live... He is the main reason why the first three albums for Metallica were their best...
@@t7mf James loved Cliff and looked up to him... he read and listened to everything Cliff told him he liked... If you love someone to the point that you nearly drink yourself to death from grief... you need someone to blame for their death... you can't blame ice...
@@PapawsDadillacOEMplus I believe he did teach himself to play but he also was the only member of the band to go to music school and actually study musical theory... he taught Kirk and James how to read music...
This song is so underrated, it goes so hard and the orchestra on top of Metallica just takes this song to the top, I'm looking forward to seeing if you guys rock with it
I could not get enough of that album. With that being said, the live version is leaps and bounds better because Metallica feeds off of the energy of the crowd. They just keep multiplying that energy until the whole stadium is a mosh pit.
This song was written specifically to be played with an orchestra. That is the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra playing with 'em. Hench the name of the album, "S&M." Symphony and Metallica. And the song is absolutely awesome! As y'all get older, you'll more and more appreciate the light/freight train analogy. :)
That was a full orchestra with violins and trumpets playing with Metallica. Props to old men rocking. Thank you for listening to this song I requested. You guys rock. Jason the bass player and Dave Mustane got kicked out of the band. Cliff is the one that died. Next check out Whiskey In The Jar and Until It Sleeps.
yall have to listen to megadeth, TORNADO OF SOULS. it is such an awesome song i think you guys will love it!!! in fact the whole rust in peace album by megadeth is a masterpiece, considered by many the greatest thrash metal album ever made!!!
This song goes so freaking hard, it made me really appreciate orchestra as a kid, I was young when this was new, and it for sure left an impact. That show must have been amazing to be at.
Metallica is so well written that the bands can transfer music to a symphony orchestra, very easily with their harmony, melody and everything. Also, as you guys have learned that Metallica is the Masters of the breakdown and the change up.
Metallica had worked w/ orchestral conductor/ composer Michael Kamen on the 1991 single 'Nothing else matters'... so, when Metallica wanted to perform a live concert w/ a full orchestra in 1999, Kamen was picked to come up w/ the musical arrangements and conduct the symphony w/ Metallica. 'No leaf clover' (and the song 'Minus human') were written specifically for the orchestra performance (no studio version) that was recorded and filmed... released as the 'S&M' live album in 1999. Michael Kamen has since passed away (R.I.P.), and Metallica did the orchestra performance once again in 2019 and released it as "S&M 2".
it's awesome you guys have found Metallica and became fans. Great group with so many great songs. Their bassist Rob T was in Suicidal Tendencies in his younger days. Please check out Suicidal Tendencies - You Can't bring me down You'll see a young Rob on base plus it's a great song.
I've been wanting someone to react to this song for WAYYYYYYYYYYY TOOOOO LOOOONNG! Hell yeah i'm so glad someone finally gave this song the Justice it Deserves!!!!
I've watched every Metallica reaction you guys have done and look forward to more. It's been a pleasure watching you fellows on your 'Tallica journey. There's so much out there! Please do my favorite, Fight Fire With Fire from Ride The Lightning! I'll donate if I have to. As for this song, it's off their S&M album released in 1999. It is a live recording they did with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. The member that died was bassist Cliff Burton (check out the live video of him playing For Whom the Bell Tolls) He died in a car crash involving the band's tour bus while on the Master of Puppets tour in Europe. He was replaced with Jason Newsted for the And Justice for All album. They stuck with Jason during the 90's but parted ways in the early 2000's. Jason was replaced with Rob Trujillo for the St. Anger album and has been with the band since. I believe the new album name (72 seasons) is a reference to when Rob joined and brought Metallica to their hard roots. Please explore the albums with the different bassists, because you can really tell the difference in the band's sound and direction. Keep up the good work!
Alden, hopefully they'll read the entire msg. There's another YT Channel to check out if you haven't yet; POLO REACTS. He started his Metallica Journey about 8-9 months ago. He loves Bill Burr and he just started his journey into TOOL about 1-2 months ago and absolutely almost immediately enjoyed it. Here's the link to his reaction to TOOL - "Sober" on 11/11/2022. His YT Channel also just hit 100k Subs about a week ago. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5jhIIs_SoL8.html Here's another one of his favorite reactions. Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight". About 4 min 30 sec into the reaction, POLO says, "This is probably the best song I've ever heard without drums 🥁". All of the Subs.....just wait, Phil isn't there yet. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vlwO4KSEo5I.html
Please react to To live is to die , it is an instrumental(no lyrics) and its a tribute to cliff Burton, the bassist that passed away.A true masterpiece
In this case the studio version is the live version. I think what people were requesting was not having the second performance done of this much more recently done for S&M 2. The original is considered the superior version. Both versions were recorded from live performances with orchestras.
What happened at the time is that they did actually go back into the studio and tweak aspects of S&M that may not have recorded well or needed some extra oomph. This was a bit of a controversy at the time as far as “is it still live”. Then it came out that most bands do a lot of post production to live albums. Which is a duh, but some folks don’t catch on too quick.
I would love for you guys to react to symphonic metal. Nightwish - Ghost Love Score live at Wacken. The song has a really big sound with amazing vocals.
Also I loved your reaction to Kendricks video, count me out. That's when I found you all and subscribed. I really can't get enough of that video, he is amazing.
Small note: the "studio version" of a song *is* the album version. Some bands release versions that are "live in studio" which is kind of an in between of a live performance and a studio version. A "live studio performance" is a live recording of the band (with no post-production) but recorded in-studio, so it's much closer in sound to the studio version.
Y’all should react to Master of Puppets with the full orchestra, which is from the same album as this song. Make sure you do the live version where you can see everyone rock out. It’ll blow your mind.
S&M was a masterpiece!! I highly recommend you watch the DVD. It was the first time Metallica played with a full Symphony Orchestra. They did S&M2 I think 20 years later in California, also a DVD and worth checking out fellas, both performances are legendary
This is the album version... BUT the album is a Live recording of Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra thats why you hear horns and violins and what not... Hence S&M... great album listen to the whole thing!!
You should check out the Metallica Justice Medley (Live - San Diego '92). I love those guys but their live shows are where they really excelled back in the day.
Story goes, as told by Kirk, Cliff and Kirk were arguing over who got the better of 2 bunks on the tour bus so they played best hand of cards to see who got the choice, Cliff drew the ace of spades and took the bunk that ultimately led to him being tossed out of the bus window when it crashed; had Kirk won he said he would have taken that bunk and it might have been him thrown out the bus window.
Is like achieving a goal but than suddently as You Want to go farder something always has to go wrong but i take it as an no matter what You have to go through or struggle youve got to try your Best over and over again to make your dream come to live by working hard
I'm not sure where to comment because, I'm kinda new to this. I have been watching you guys and you're entertaining. Try some Otis Redding..These arms of mine, Try a little tenderness, sitting on the dock of the bay..amazing
This is from their concerts with the San Francisco orchestra. Metallica with an entire orchestra behind them!!! Amazing performances! They’ve done two of them now.
I love that y'all are loving on Metallica! Would you please please please react to Cemetery Gates by Pantera, if you haven't already???!!!??? It doesn't disappoint!!!
Guys... You deserve nothing Short of the best in life and the accomplishment of your greatest dreams. Watching your reactions to content outside of your normal parameters is inspiring, fun and funny. I hope your openness is infectious and creates a society that is actually open to new, different and more things to enjoy. We need it, take care gentlemen.
It was put on a collaborative album they made with a symphony called S & M, symphony & metallica. Studio means NOT live but recorded in and actual studio.
If you watched this year’s Detroit Lions HardKnocks, this is the song HC Dan Campbell referenced: “… light at the end of the tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way…”. That episode ended w/this song
Im a life long met fan and I've never heard of the "four leaf ☘ clover" album 💁♂️😂 The album is title "s&m" (symphony and metallica) ..... it was done with the San Francisco symphony in the late 90' early 2000's...... it was an experiment......and damn did it come out amazing 💯🎯
i know it's a long video, but u could do different parts of this, just search for "best crowd ever" we argentinians take passion to a whole different level. Love from buenos aires
This is a more mastered version of the song (studio)- even the live recordings have some audio mixing that don’t carry the same impact that the live experience would. Having the full San Francisco Symphony Orchestra back a metal band is a hell of a thing. The massive, bass-y, timpani drums of the orchestra can be over powering in the live performance (in a good way, I think it is an intentional part of the composition) which just isn’t the same. Aside from the idea of an unexpected fright train being sheer bad luck like the title ‘no leaf clover’ would suggest, the lyrics also suggest a rapid success (‘good day to be alive’) from ignoring or not preparing for the consequences (‘pay no mind to the distant thunder’) and achieved by cutting corners (‘sucker for that quick reward’) - so the tale of someone who rocketed to the top and didn’t take the time to build a strong foundation and are therefore more likely to fail, but because it was so easy for them to succeed in the first place they can’t recognize their downfall (the freight train) when it’s coming directly at them. Further, the artistry of the song itself uses the waves of big orchestral movements (particularly the drawn out rolling crescendos) to almost be an allegory for the anxiety and apprehension of the witness (the person singing the song, or the audience) which CAN recognize the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ as a downfall. I absolutely love this song. It doesn’t get played often (how hard would it be to travel with a full orchestra?) but that also makes it feel a little bit like a treat saved for special occasions.
