The 60’s and 70’s has many songs about caring for each other, no matter who they were. Lord have mercy, we need music to inspire this caring now. With social media and other factors, people are so self centered and hateful it’s sickening😔
Galveston by Glen Campbel was the one that made me think about the guys going to Vietnam...not knowing if they would come back and missing the ones they left.
I can appreciate that point of view in that moment......but its about sooo much more than that...its about your clan, friends, lovers ,community ....the person you pass everyday and pretend they aren't there....... to put this in a box ...Vietnam....today .....is to not seeting the big picture. But ya, Vietnam....
Allan Clarke was a fine vocalist, one of the top of his or any generation. The song refers to the brotherhood of man. (He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother)

In 1918 at Father Flanagan‘s home for boys orphanage in Nebraska young resident Howard Loomis who had polio and wore braces had trouble walking, especially up and down the stairs. The older boys started carrying him on the stairs. One day father Flanagan asked Ruben Granger if Howard was heavy, his reply, ‘ he ain’t heavy father, he’s my brother’!
The Hollies had a lot of great songs, and in several different styles. You should listen to "All I Need in the Air that I Breathe", which stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. One of those "I know where I was and what I was doing" moments.
This song always makes me cry, his voice and the harmony are so pure and It brings me back to the music I listened to in the 60"s and 70's. I miss this kind of music it was so good. The air that I breath is another one of the Hollies that gives me the goosebumps.
This is one of the best songs ever written and performed. The Hollies were the group to perform it. The guy who wrote it was actually dying of cancer when he wrote it as I understand. This is a secular song exemplifying the spirit of Jesus' command to love one another. This is one my favorite songs of all time. I've yet to hear an arrangement to beat The Hollies. Peace,
I've had the honour of seeing Allan Clarke sing this many times live in Hollies concerts, and he gives a stunning performance on stage. The whole theatre would give him a standing ovation. Truly one of the greatest live singers of all time in my opinion. Although he retired from the Hollies in 1999, he has recently recorded a solo album called "Resurgance" and the Hollies as a band still perform to this day, having never broken up. I have my tickets already for a concert in the UK in 2021. Although the lineup has changed over the years, both Tony Hicks on lead guitar and Bobby Elliott on drums, are still in the band and they still pack the theatres out worldwide. Brilliant group!
Never realised this was inspired by Father Flanigans Boys Town, wow Fr Flanigan is our own claim to fame here in Ballymoe, in Ireland as he is our own born and raised here before he went to America
Hi India, nice to see you again :) . . . . . This song was big the year my brother graduated from high-school. It was an all boys Catholic school and they sang this at their graduation. It made my mama cry! She was very sentimental
I also feel it represents all of us all over the world with what we are going through right now. We need to be there for each other and help each other out and lift each other up through all of this evil that has been thrown at us ✌🙏❤🌏🌸💮🌹🌼
I love The Hollies ❤ Remembering listening to them with my parents when I was a child. 'The Air That I Breathe' is one of my favourite songs of all time. Gets me every time ❤🧡
Of course, the Hollies were one of the top four or five bands of the British Invasion, and were a great, great group. I still listen to their music all the time.
This is one of my favourite songs! The Hollies are awesome, I love their vocal harmonies and the simple fact they're such good singers, not something that is common these days imho. Graham Nash was once a member of the band and that means something....thank you India.
I saw The Hollies playing in a converted church hall near London when Graham Nash was still with them. When Nash left to join Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young The Hollies were written off but then they came back with great songs like this.
I attended 13 years of Catholic School back in the mid 60s. We had folk masses the first Friday of each month. We sang this in church with the guitar, piano and harmonica. We had the church packed! Ahhhh. Good memories. Except the crazy nuns! LOL.
I lobe there music i have only hrared them by accident recently a week last sunday i love there music very gentle.brilliant voices and lovely music playing.
I Have a little brother who has been an alcoholic we are getting older I am 70 and I have always loved this song ! I will be there for him and others ! We need more songs like this today
Growing up in the 50's 60's 70's , these groups and their songs meant so much more then they do to people now. Because we went through the 50's and 60's Civil Rights Movement, the assassination of this worlds greatest men, the ending of one war and living through Vietnam, experiencing the heartbreak of our fathers, brothers, sons shot down in battle. The hippie movement which brought about the changing tides of the world was an experience that can never truly be understood or felt unless you were a part of it. I am so blessed to have grown up in this time as I see the world and it's music going back 10 steps to every step forward.
Has anyone but the Hollies got the word " Encumber" in a hit song? Lol I love it. Made me learn that word when I was 11. My favorite song for years. Might be back on top now that I hear it watching you react. Its so good for that little low key band. Good kids, never heard of bad behavior out of those guys. Every song is a hit.
I've loved the Holies since I was a child. Bus Stop, On A Carousel, Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress, Carrie Anne, Look Through Any Window...even their covers of other folks stuff like Manfred Mann's The Mighty Quinn.
@@markbyers1651 Maybe, but it was Manfred Mann who had the hit with it which is a good thing because although Dylan CAN write, listening to his actual voice is like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard, lol.
Love this song but it always brings up a lot in me. I volunteered in casualty recovery for people lost at sea, either accidentally or by their own will & I always think of the young men who went too soon. There's a lot of fraternity among men even if it's not explicitly expressed or seems like it's not there.
When all is said and done, it's a universal appeal for everyone to love one another as brothers (and sisters). Black is Beautiful was one of the 1960s themes. People began began mixing together as equals and celebrating music, life and love.
You are correct, "brother" refers to your fellow human being. I always get tears in my eyes when I hear this song. An interesting trivia point: In this live performance, Singer Allan Clarke makes a mistake on the bridge. The lyrics are supposed to be, "If I'm laden at all, I'm laden with sadness that everyone's heart isn't filled with the gladness of love for one another." He replaces "gladness" with "sadness" a second time. Anyway, beautiful song with a beautiful sentiment. Makes me pine for the 1960s. A contemporary song with a similar vibe is Bill Withers' "Lean on Me." Be forewarned, however that Bill Withers songs get blocked a lot.
This song is about a kid who had polio and when asked how would he get to anywhere, the answer came back I'll carry him,he ain't heavy. The answer came from his actual brother, wonderful!!☘
You can see it on her face! She was into it the music! The words has touched her heart! Her eyes sees the emotion❤️ first time watching your her! Great job
We need music like this even more, now, a year later. Americans are divided with no way to turn. This music points to a better future for all of our kids. We need to get back to what the hippies prescribed. As a teen when this came out, I took it as an inclusive brother. Everybody is my brother. This concept has been brutalized since the 70’s. We need it back.
Please remember to do reactions to AWB the Average White Band: "A Love Of Your Own", "Pick-Up The Pieces," "Cut The Cake," "School Boy Crush," "Work To Do," "Person To Person," "Cloudy (Live Version: 6:36)," "If I Ever Lose This Heaven," "Queen Of My Soul," "I'm The One" and "Soul Searching." I don't think they got enough credit for all of the great music they made back in the day and they are still touring today!!! Hats-Off to AWB!!!
