This is soul music … the term ‘blue-eyed soul’ was originated for Bobby and Bill. They were one of the first white groups to throw deep emotion into their singing and they were phenomenally popular in the sixties. Bobby’s high tenor (3 and a half octaves) was pitch perfect and Bill’s bass baritone could shake your bones. Their harmonies were uncannily tight and beautiful, but they started out in straight rock and roll. ‘Little Latin Lupe Lu’ , written by Bill was their first hit an covered by dozens of bands from Mitch Rider to Bruce Springsteen. Also ‘My Babe’, Justine!, and Koko Jo. They sang blues - ‘I Just Wanna Make Love to You’, ‘Summertime’ and gospel. Their first Billboard #1 was the ballad ‘You’ve Lost that Lovin Feeling’ and that song was the most played song of the 20th century, only overtaken in about 2015 by ‘Highway to Heave’. So these guys have a lot to offer and they sang together for 40 years, although Bobby died in 2003, his partner Bill is still singing to full houses. BTW … if you chose to listen to Justine, take the studio version…. It was a bit raunchy and when they sang it on TV they had to ‘sanitize’ it😁

Your comment was very interesting. I am from germany and heard as many songs as possible. I become a big bobby fan. Maybe i am the only one who think that bill sang much more notes in the songs like bobby did. I red bills book and i still think the same. Bill is just a baritone singer and we have a lot of them but bobbys very rare voice was really unique. I think he should be much more apprechiated. To me he was the heart of the duo.my opinion.
@zanhar7688
@zanhar7688 8 месяцев назад
@@sylviabuck3369 I agree - Bill is a lyric bass-baritone. Although there are others whose voices can reach those low notes, very few can actually sing down there. His voice set off Bobby's beautiful tenor ... and to my mind there would be no Righteous Brothers without both of them. 🙂

the fact that his live recording, done in front of an audience, is objectively better than the actual recorded song speaks volumes to the level of talent this man had...It wasn't his song originally, and many MANY people have recorded versions of it since it was released. But NOBODY, will EVER, do this song better than Bobby did it. This is his song for all time. RIP Bobby Hatfield.

Oh my, young man, going down the rabbit hole of 60's music will literally blow your mind lol. I am 73 and this was the music of my teenage years. From Motown, the Beatles, Acid rock, Janis Joplin, the list goes on and on. The biggest make out artist was Johnny Mathis but this song would have been called a panty dropper, lol. If you like the rat pack you would love Perry Como and Nat King Cole. Just heard you say "panty dropper" and laughed!

Bobby had a rare voice called a countertenor, which is the equivalent of a high soprano in a female singer. Most men who have had his voice were Italian opera singers called castrati which means they had been castrated to preserve the voice. That made Bobby even more special because he had it and didn't lose it. He'd probably still be alive if not for his having a cocaine induced heart attack in his sleep 21 years ago.

Thanks for such a heartfelt reaction. Bobby and his talent will be forever etched in our minds and hearts. PS: the lyrics were written in 1955 for a movie, Unchained, about a man incarcerated.

Alex North music composition and Lyricist Hy Zaret together wrote one of the greatest love songs ever in "Unchained Melody." They wrote it as the music score for the 1955 movie "Unchained." Ten years later in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show. Bobby Hatfield of the 'Righteous Brothers' along with the Andy Williams Orchestra gave the greatest live performance in the history of (Live) television. It was one for the ages. It has become the quintessential version of them all. The rest as they say is history...

I 💖💖💖💖 your reactions 🙌 You are a joy to watch, no joke 💯 Plus listening to you makes me nostalgic. Not a New Yorker, but originally I'm a Jersey girl 😁 But all the guys my Dad used to work with and hang out with were all Brooklyn guys. Anyway, I grew up listening to all kinds of old- school music that was before my time. I absolutely 💗😍 this type of music. Not to say I don't also appreciate other kinds of music, I do. I'm pretty open- minded when it comes to music actually. So just a little FYI: "Unchained Melody" was actually written by Alex North and Hy Zaret back in 1955 for a little known film called "Unchained". The plot was centered around this man who got arrested and convicted and was conflicted about whether he should just do his time and hope his wife was still there waiting for him or if he should escape and take his chances in an effort to be with his wife and live life on the run. A Black- American opera singer by the name of Robert Todd Duncan was actually the first guy to sing this song and he first sang it in the movie, playing a bit part as one of the inmates. Robert Todd Duncan was something of a trail blazer, actually. He was one of the very first Black- American opera singers to sing before integrated audiences back in the 1930's. (He refused to sing in theaters where audiences were segregated.) Another Black- American singer by the name of Roy Hamilton would soon cut his own version of "Unchained Melody" on the heels of the release of Robert Todd Duncan's version. The movie didn't break any waves but the song "Unchained Melody" for the movie became a hit. Roy Hamilton was actually one of Elvis's idols and Elvis got to meet him in 1969 at American Sound Studios. There's some film footage and some pictures of Elvis and Roy hanging out. According to Bill Medley, it was Roy Hamilton's version of "Unchained Melody" that was both Bobby's and Elvis's favorite. They both admired Roy Hamilton as a vocalist. Bill Medley is a bass- baritone and still alive and still does live performances and is still putting out albums. Bobby Hatfield was a natural counter- tenor and died in 2003. The other guy in the pink turtleneck was Andy Williams. Only song I know of his is "Moon River". (My elders weren't fans of his, obviously). Now as for more Righteous Brothers suggestions: "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" "Soul And Inspiration" "You'll Never Walk Alone" "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" "Brown- Eyed Woman" "Ebb Ride" "Guess Who" "Justine" & those are just off the top of my head. My Dad loved The Righteous Brothers. So I grew up listening to them (amongst a lot of other old- school greats). If you want other reaction suggestions of this type of music, I'm gonna put in two requests now: "Since I Don't Have You" by The Skyliners & "Up On The Roof" by The Drifters. Two of my Dad's personal favorites right there. Thank you, thank you, thank you oh so much to whomever requested this one & a big thank you to you, Mr. Vibe, sir, for reacting to this one 💪👏👏👏👏🌹🌹🌹🌹 My sincere well wishes to you & yours 💕

Love the way you describe his voice as butter pouring out of his throat, and silk you can drape your face in. It’s exactly that ! Note also that, as much as his voice is pitched very high, it is smooth and buttery throughout the registers - never edgy or freakish. That makes his middle register actually sound low. Only Elvis had that kind of seamless transition between registers.

My mom took my sister and me to a dinner show in our early teens in Tahoe. I didn't appreciate her music then but listening to Elvis, the Righteous Brothers, and so many other artists really makes me appreciate some wonderful music. Our mom would kick us out of the apartment on Saturday mornings so she could clean (we didn't do a thorough job - lol-and no job is worth doing, if not doing it well - but that says more about my upbringing than the song.) Great lyrics, though!! I'm glad that you played it!
