Setting up a new front derailleur can be frustrating, as it doesn't have much adjustment. For this reason, it's important to get it in the right place when you fit it in the first place. Modern bikes come with many different combinations of derailleurs and gears, so make sure your set up is compatible.
This is a long guide, so you can choose to either watch the entire video above, or follow it in smaller chunks by clicking on the individual steps below.

Steps to Fit And Set Up A Bike’s Front Derailleur:
00:06 Fit A Bike's Front Derailleur
A front derailleur doesn't have much adjustment so getting it in the right position is important.
01:37 Front Derailleur Adjustment & Set Up On
Front derailleur adjustment and set up should be performed after the rear derailleur is working. Then go back and check the operation of the rear derailleur with the chain in all positions at the front.
04:42 Diagnose Chain Length For Bike
On a derailleur gear system the chain shifts between cog wheels of different sizes. The system adapts to the demands for different amounts of chain with a spring-loaded arm that moves the bottom jockey wheel backwards to increase or decrease the path the chain must follow.
05:25 Connect A Bike's Chain With A Chain Tool
Any single-speed or standard derailer chain can be connected with chain tool. Narrow 9, 10 or '11 speed' chains have plates that are too thin to make this a reliable process and connect with special links that are supplied with them. Some chains - for example Shimano - have to be broken and reconnected with a special pin. Others with a trick link that can be dismantled by hand.

After literally HOURS of fiddling with my front derailleur on my new fatbike, your video showed me the factory position of the cable was WAY too loose. Getting the derailleur into the proper position was absolutely impossible, no matter how much I adjusted the barrel screw. Seeing you literally grab and pull the bare cable, to give it tension, made me realize the one step I needed to get enough resistance on the cable to pull it through the set screw. Turns out, the proper position of my cable needed to be about an inch more taunt than it was from the factory. No wonder I couldn't get the darn thing to move within the proper range! Shifting smooth now. Thanks for the insights.

Probably the best video I've seen on this matter. Clear, simple instructions, confidently presented, step by step and well illustrated. With complete ignorance on the mysteries of the front derailleur, I have spent the last few days trawling RU-vid only to suffer frustration and endure poor quality, confusing and ... well I've said enough. Found this video, an hour later I had my new front derailleur cable fitted, 'stretched' and all gears working perfectly. Thank you.

You may drop the "Probably". www.madegood.com/bikes/ is the definitive filmed manual for bicycle maintenance. Another perfection of British film production industry.

Great Video. I saw a lot of videos showing how to change the cable on the front shifter, but none of them explained how to properly connect the cable to the front derailer. I copied the transcript to a notepad and printed it out for quick reference when doing it. PERFECT, thank you! Subscribed and will for sure watch more videos from this channel

Ok, update from previous comment. My gear now switches to larger front cog, but I think I need to fine adjust cable tension. However, I don't have barrell adjusters and can't gain anymore tension on the cable manually. Any ideas ?

My bike is pretty close to getting launched over the back fence. It seems as though its not wide enough fro the full range of motion as no matter what i do it either rubs on the highest or lowest gear.

I'm confused, my front cage doesn't and will not sit flush with the front chain ring, I can get it parallel however it won't be flush, does this matter?

Ok, so, I had chain rub on the derailleur. I've adjusted using the L screw, Refixed the cable, but now my gears won't move upto the front big cog at all, any ideas ?

Could you please elaborate on which way to turn barrel adjuster? I just seem to over tension the cable whatever way I turn. Thank you.
@MadeGoodFilms
@MadeGoodFilms 4 года назад
You will see the barrel adjuster expand or contract depending on which way you turn it. An expanding adjuster tensions the cable, and a contracting adjuster will add slack.

'Spreading' a stiff link is releasing stuck-together components of a link to allow it to move freely again. We have a video that explains how to do it which you can watch here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qDFSTi6aMxQ.html
