Many People have had issues with the D-pad not clicking as the spring can come loose or get caught under the D-pad tabs. Here is a quick tutorial on how to fix that.
I was struggling to get the spring back in, but I put the top in first and it worked just fine. Just in case anyone was having the same issue with the newer controllers that have another longer tab to insert on the top. Awesome video, fixed it! Thanks :)
I originally opened up my Controller to fix the Bumpers but then I needed to fix the D pad. Your video was perfect. I don't like messing with things but your video made me feel at ease to give it a shot. Thank you soo much.
I had this same question! I know this is super old but I still found this video when I was looking, so maybe this will help someone: First, I dripped a small amount of hand sanitizer in there. I'm sure pure rubbing alcohol would have been better. Try at your own risk. Then I kind of mopped it up with the corner of a napkin. My dpad button was still stuck in the pressed position (it was the right one, by the way). So I took a piece of packing tape and folded it so I could stick it to that button only and try to pull it out of the pressed position. it worked, but then it slipped right back to pressed. I figured I was done for and it had lost its spring, but I kept messing with it. After many times of pulling it back into the unpressed position, it stayed there and could click down. I had to do it more before I could click it and it would unclick on its own. I put it back together and it seems to be ok so far, but try this at your own risk I guess; I am no expert, and it was a janky process.
Thanks so much man! I was putting a new shell around my controller and the d-pad was not working properly at all.. Thanks to your video,, it is. My personal savior!
Thanks, worked like a charm. The hardest part was taking off the side panels. Was afraid of breaking them since it's my Cyberpunk 2077 controller. But now its all good. Decided to use a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to also clean out any dirt/dead skin that built up in the controller while I had it open. Working perfectly fine now.
To think I was about to buy a new controller when fixing mine was so easy. I had to bend the spring a good bit for it to work again, but it did! Thank you so much for this.
Thanks for the video luckily my d-pad wasnt broke i just cleaned it really well and bent the springs back and it works like a charm i liked and subscribed keep up the amazing work
One semi important tip for the screws. The one in the middle, where the batteries are, I did not see at first. I only saw the 4 screws. 2 on each side, and then I tried opening the top off. Didn't work. What I didn't realize, there is a sticker covering the 5th screw. The one in the battery section is in the middle, just under the Zip code on the sticker. Just use a small device to tear open the sticker in that spot. Then poof ! , there's your last screw. Maybe most of you already knew this, but I didn't and I wanted to help out the others that didn't as well.
Great video ! I followed your directions, and also bought the specific tool to unscrew the screws. Was a few bucks on Amazon. Alas, it didn't fix my problem:(. Apparently my controller d pad is no longer working. Everything else on it works great. Oh well, was hoping I could just spend a few bucks for the tool as opposed to 40-50 bucks for a new controller. Thanks anyways
QUICKDRAWMODS1 I understand, but in your video you go right to it. The screw is visible in the battery area. I'm just saying in my controller, you don't see the screw. It's covered by a sticker. I didn't know the screw was behind it. But like I said, great video.
Not to seem petty but If I am showing everyone there are 5 screws and show there one under the battery cover and if a viewer is following along and sees a sticker on their controller, isn't it safe to assume their going to say to themself... "oh I have a screw under my sticker" I just saw it as common sense.
Thank you so much. great tutorial. Once I took off the dpad I just had to literally repoke the top part of the pad with my pinky because for some reason it wasnt clicking. After that I put dpad back on and the ring thingy and good as new. only had this for a month when this happened. thanks again
You are awesome, I just finished fixing my Xbox One controller because the D-pad down stopped clicking!!! Followed the video, and BAM works perfectly now!!!!!
Thanks for this. My *new* controller's dpad left direction wasn't registering input even though you can feel and hear it click. I had to HARD press left for it to work. Suspected there was some dust build up between the dpad plastic and the PCB board. I opened it up, took the spring out, blew on it, put it back together. Working as expected now!
I did this and it actually made the problem massively worse, as in my right direction that had become desensitized now almost doesn't work at all after doing this. I did bend the springs a bit more than you did - is it possible to go too much in the other direction like that? They don't look too bent or anything...
the same reason is what led me here, I play a lot of Tekken which i believe is responsible for it happening as blocking and backing away are the same input..... also i feel like if i take it apart i won't be able to fix it again despite this video
My D pad clicks fine, but does not respond properly on screen. Sometimes you push two or three times before it moves once in a menu. Sometimes you push once and it jumps two or three spots. Any ideas?
I didnt even know you could remove the controller grip plates, I swapped the ones from a broken white controller to a perfectly fine black one, it looks cool
Thank you. Just had to swap the core of a new controller with my primary that the right stick was drifting. Must have mishandled the spring a bit. Took it out and reformed it and now it's just fine. Is controller modding a viable means of income? This was a fun project.
Mine is still working all the way around but the left direction is not clicking. I'll give this a whirl. It's a brand new controller (a replacement for a one with a bad "Y" button) so it shouldn't be dirty. I'm defintely going to watch your full breakdown video too. Thanks for this. 😎👍
yes, i don't have a T8 security screwdriver, nor a regular T8 and not even a T6, just realized when i peeled the sides and saw the format of the screws.
I have 2 gamepads. One perfectly functional and one with an issue. With the functional one, if I'm in an Xbox menu navigating through tiles, if I keep pressing right it starts going easily tile by tile * tick tick tick *. The same if I press left * tick tick tick *. With the bad one, I if keep pressing right is ok. If I keep pressing left it goes through those tiles to the left, but very very fast. First I thought it was a spring issue, but because the behavior differs when the button is being pressed continuously the spring should not matter. Do you have any advice on what might have gone wrong?
I got the Xbox series x 20th anniversary controller, and according to Google, some batches had the spring for the d-pad make an annoying slight sound like a guitar string. Personally I really don't want to take my controller apart because it's a collector's item, so what do you think the noise is and what do you suggest?
I have the controller with the wires, so when I tried this to disassemble it to fix the D-pad, it was assembled a bit differently, didn't have the battery pack.
The left side of my pad has no spring to it at all. When i'm running in hardline it drops ammo packs by itself. I was doing a lot of driving in 10 matches, then the left side of d pad went dead and the throwing of the ammo?
It very good video to help. I had a trouble with Dpad button got stuck down Dpad. So I took it apart recleaned it,fix the string bend it little bit. It work well. I hit like button
My d pad left wont recognize an input about 50% of the time if i press it quickly. But when i take the dpad out and press the buttons it works every time with no problems. Is my board worn too much in the spot that the dpad strikes? Would have just bought a new one if it wasn't an elite
I have an elite controller where the dpad is acting weird. When I click up or down the dpad doesn't react the first time, but after the first click it reacts normally. Then, when I stop using it for a minute or so I have the same problem again. First try nothing happens and after that the dpad works fine as long as I keep clicking. Any idea what the problem could be?
thank you I spilled orange juice on my whole controller, had to clean everything with alcohol and my dpad was sticky and this just fixed it. The controller works perfectly fine now :)
Looks like a bad design. Just bought a new Xbox Wireless controller and the dpad's up direction has an uneven springy click compared to the rest. Wonder if I exchange for another or replace it with Switch Pro controller.
my left dpad registers a long press even tho it clicks. In other words, it feels great but will fly across the screen if I push it . I cleaned it, etc. Can I use electrical spray?
I bought a used one but my d pad is a bit noisy + a bit loose and springy. (Sometimes you can even hear the metal frame a bit) Is it supposed to feel like that? Should i bent the metal springs to make it feel tighter? I'm a new xbox1 user so any help would be appreciated.
My down D pad on my series x controller is stuck and it won’t correct itself. I have tried blowing in it and rubbing alcohol what should i do to fix it? Some help would be appreciated
IT might.... If your spring is off center or not aligned this will work for elite controller too. IF your elite controller button is defective then no.
I have a different problem, on my depad all four of them click. but my bottom button and the right one on the depad don't work. is this fixable? please help.
my d-pad clicks at each spot, but only down works... I took it apart, gently flexed the spring... with the d-pad out I can make each contact pad work, I found that each of them has an actual contact under the shiny bubble that had shifted their positions... left, up, and right would only make functional contact in the upper-right corner edge of each contact pad... weird... there's no physical way that the d-pad tabs can engage the contact pads now... I kinda think the controller maybe got hot, and the conductive adhesive or solder on the contact pads melted just slightly enough that the pad shifted a bit...
Anyone know where i could get a new ring for the d pad? I kinda have bent it wrong so the d pad wont feel right. Happily it still works but i would like to have it working right.
For my controller the metal dome did not click and stayed in the down position (luckily not registering double clicks or contious down, but the dpad down did not spring back) Problem was: The metal domes are secured by tape (revisioned controller) the tape glue did not stick to the dome and showed some bubbles around it. So I massaged the tape to stretch it and stick to the dome and then added extra tape on top to tighten it, getting back the clickback (for now).
for some reason my dpad does not work in the right direction... ive dismantled it and check it all and its fine. but when i use the controller with it all apart, it works(clicking on the motherboard[green bit] underneath the dpad) perhaps its my actuall dpad not being deep enough or something i dont know
QUICKDRAWMODS1 hey what should I do if it doesn't click when it's all taken apart. I'm looking at the bare controller and where the d'pad should be the down on the d'pad isn't clicking
i relize this vid is a bit older but if you could message me back that would be great. ok so i did everything in the vid and none of the buttons on the dpad are sticking, however the dpad keeps pushing down all by itself. like i said when i take it appart all the buttons click so i dont know what it is
My screen been stuck scrolling down and I went to see what it was and it was my dpad going down and my up d pad doesn’t do anything but make it where it balances everything else I need help pls
take out the screws... but you dont mention that they arent normal philips screws. infact i dont even know what they are so i cant buy a driver to fit.
Well I have mented it in other videos and by now anyone who is used to taking apart controllers from Xbox should know they are torx t8 screwdriver. They have been using the same screw type for 15 years now. It's like not knowing nintendo uses tri wing screws. I can't cover the screwdriver type in EVERY video. Sometimes these videos are done quickly and on the spot for customers who need instant results.
Wow first my left dpad was stuck and now after cleaning it and putting it back on, my down dpad is stuck (doesn't click). Grrrrrr. I got it finally. Put the dpad on the metal spring wrong. 😁
