I hate that your walking example issues were strictly just either a missing handle or an unnecessary behavior. We need other walking issues and their fixes!

Walking has so many moving parts and can be applied to any body type so it's often difficult to narrow it down to one issue. Hopefully we can make this tool catch more walking common issues in the future.

Hello, there is a bug thats been anoying me for a while, after i record the arm movements, in the preview they get inverted, i cant find a way to fix it, it even renders inverted !

Can you make a video explaining the elbow threshold? I’ve noticed that when bending the arm for different poses, the elbow will sometimes bend in a way that does not look good, and I have to set the keystones in different positions on the threshold for each different triggers that I create I assume do you want to place a hold key frame Keystone in the trigger to make sure that animation looks correct, but it doesn’t seem to work when I have different animations at different threshold‘s because they seem to overlap each other. Is there a workflow that you can provide that would make this easier for me?

For elbows I play around with the Limb IK parameters until I get something that looks good most of the time without needing to keyframe anything. If you are getting a lot of bad positions, maybe the original parameter setting or other Limb IK settings are causing issues, or the rigging makes the elbow space too tight or something tag related? If the problem persists, please upload a video or screenshot of your issue to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to help you out.

The text in panels are often out of focus. This makes it difficult to follow what you are doing. Also, The tiny size of your cursor and the speed with which you move and clck makes it difficult to follow. A highlighted cursor might help

Try the 4K version at fullscreen, might help. In other videos I zoom in and highlight more, but this was a quicker/shorter one.

Is the arm definitely independent (crown icon)? That should make it be able to move on its own and not expand/contract with breathing. But it should move a little as it should be connected at the shoulder. Hey, i was watching your tutorial on using a existing puppet take it into illustrator and change it to my liking, everything was working fine until i decided to change the name in illustrator. BAM! My rig just got messed up, and facing all sorts of weird issues, like when i go into recording mode my head is almost leaving the body behind not following properly, i decided to check the previous rig settings such as which parts are INDEPENDENT, still no luck, it behaves weird, i still have the previous puppet template below my puppet, when i change it to the template puppet everything is fine but my modified one seems to act weird. I wish they fixed this issue. any help? I dont want to remake the characters face again in illustrator it was long.

Hard to diagnose without seeing the puppet, but yes, renaming or reorganizing things can unfortunately break the rigging. My advice would be to post a video, screenshot, or a puppet to adobe.com/go/chfeedback for more direct help.

In Rig mode, there is a circle icon at the bottom for adding handles. You can add a handle on any selected group or layer and tag it using the tags on the right.

It sounds like you just need to make sure the mouth is tagged properly, not a handle. Check out "Chad" from the home screen and see how his mouth is set up, and copy that for your own creation. I talk more about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7GKCw4f1UrI.html

Hey, I love your videos! I have just learnt to use adobe character with your videos this past week and it's incredible. I am having an issue though. I have just recorded a character and it has a very subtle shake to it. I don't want to re-record the take because it was a pretty perfect take. Is there a way to remove this shake after the record? And why has this happened?

Hmmm not sure. You could try playing with the Face parameters and seeing if anything changes. For example, turning down Face > Head Scale, Rotation, and Position may reduce any unwanted movements. @@okaysamurai Hey. Thanks for your response. I think it was a combination of not good enough lighting during the record, and recording the head and body movements separately. It caused them both to clash with each other a little.

This usually means there is an eye tag missing or the eye shape is considered to be bigger than you want (usually extra stuff in one of your eye groups). I suggest checking out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5SxNChhm0jo.html and making sure your setup is similar.

Hi my mouth movements stopped working and in the rigging issues it saying: layer tagged as L is not being used by any behaviors. My mouth was working but for some reason it doesnt anymore.

First, make sure the layer named "L" is actually part of the mouth - if it's just something like "L Ear" for left ear, that's okay and not a big deal. But if it is the L part of the mouth and you're seeing this, then that means it can't find a Lip Sync behavior to connect to it. As I said in the other thread, if you post a screenshot or puppet in the official forums we should be able to help you diagnose it better!

If it's dropping that sounds to me like it has physics on it, like a dynamic tag or something. If it persists, please post a screenshot, video, or File > Export > Puppet (.puppet file) to adobe.com/go/chfeedback for more help.

Select the character, in the right properties go to Transform, and either change position x/y or scale to reframe the character. You can also select the scene in the project panel and change the scene width or height to see more.

In the top workspace bar, click "Rig," then click the alert/triangle icon at the bottom of the screen. If you don't see it you have an older version and need to update.

@@okaysamurai Got it. Silly question: Is there a way to adjust to the viseme to align with the blue marker? The inability to do so, causes the Lip Sync to be off. A problem I didn't have with the old version. Please advise. Thanks

I have an issue where my puppets eyes are overlapping each other. ie the blink or worried eyes always have my neutral eyes overlapping. Any idea what’s happening here?

Are they in a triggered swap set? That should only show one at a time. Blink should automatically hide everything else at its same group level, so if it's not at the same PS or AI group as the pupil, eyeball, etc - they won't disappear. Good Afternoon :) I have an little issue that hopefully is something very simple to correct. I have created a puppet, aligned the anchor points, set parenting. I was able to manually select the nodes and they would turn green, however, now when I click and drag the default rig on top of my puppet , the rig window pops up like normal but once i select the initial node and click on my puppets hip anchor point, The rig window disappears like I closed it and the magnifying glass turns into the cursor. If you have any tips, please let me know. My project is soo close, yet so far... help please!

Hard to diagnose here, but I would check the Body behavior and make sure the parts you want to track are checked under the "Tracked Handles" section.

@@okaysamurai I donät know what just happened, sorry if this get's posted twice, but I sent a reply and I'm not seeing so I'm replying again. That puppet I was having trouble with, I saved the project and shut it down so I could work on it another day. I just now opened it up, and not only had it replaced the puppet with a completely different character, but it also erased a bunch of edits I had made to the original puppet in the Photohop file. I could see how I may have accidentally saved over the character animator file with a different one, but I don't see how that could have erased saved work I did in Photoshop. I'm going to post in the feedback on the official adobe site, but I just wanted to through that out there and see if you or anyone else has had this problem. Is there a specific saving process that might cause this?

And now, I went into Photoshop, redid the edits, imported it into Ch as a brand new file, and when I saved it I kept getting a prompt saying it could not save as a new project. So when I saved it as a new version it erased the other puppet's file completely. Is there some thing that connects all the files to each other? If I'm editing in PS and CH is there a specific way I need to save and exit out of each?

You'll need to move the origin of the piece you want to connect to overlap with the one you want, like the top arm socket with the shoulder. Make sure attach style is set to "auto" on the right when you have an independent limb selected. I have a very strange issue. Whenever I add or change something in the photoshop, all my position keyframes in my timeline are messed up. Like my puppet just shifts more down and to the right in general. Now when I fix the position keys and I change something again in my photoshop, like add a layer, and hit save, the same thing happens again! It just shifts. And I have to redo all the keyframes. How can this happen? What am I missing?

Don't record anything until your puppet rig is done. If you make changes to your puppet, it may not sync up correctly with the recordings because it's based on old data.

@@okaysamurai I See. Unfortunately the puppets are still evolving but I had to start animating. With the other puppets it was no issue. I reset the position properties on each view and the puppet and see if that fixes it. Otherwise, I was hoping that an origin marker in photoshop might help. Thanks!

If behaviors like Limb IK or Walk aren't added, there's no need to tag elbows - no other behaviors need them. If you do have either of those behaviors and you still get this error, this means the behavior can't find the tag for some reason and you may need to double check where your tags are. Hi there, thanks a lot for great tutorials. Just a quick question, in Adobe Character Animator, is there a way to animate both left and right arms together in same time like mirror effect? Like I would like to lift up both arms together same time during the record.

Yes - add a second Dragger behavior. Then you can arm one for the left and one for the right. If you record them one at a time this method will work great!

If you set up your puppet like the examples where your head and body are both in a +Character folder, it should automatically connect. Make sure neither the head or body group have a crown icon next to them, or that all the parts inside have crowns (make at least one thing not have a crown, usually the face background).

Great vid as always! I'm sure there's a way of doing this: I'm happy with how a puppet is currently moving/rigged; is there a way of copying the puppet in Character An. and Photoshop and retaining all of the rigging of the original puppet in Ch An. while at the same time being able to change the look/color/shape/etc of the new copied puppet in PS -while at the same time not changing the original puppet? Sorry if that didn't make sense. I know I can create a new puppet based on the PS art, but I'm not wanting to go through the process of rigging a new puppet in Ch An. -I can never quite get the same rigging set up for new puppets.

But the best way to retain rigging would be to copy the puppet in the project panel, click the blue PSD link in your right properties for your newly copied puppet, and select a separate copy of your PSD to be linked, so like Chloe2.psd instead of Chloe1.psd. Then you have a copy with the same rigging but a separate PSD file you can edit/modify however you want. For me, I almost always rig from scratch for every character - it's tedious for sure, but my character vary enough that one size doesn't fit all.

Ok, how do you select a separate copy of the PSD to be linked? When I click on the PSD link for the new puppet it takes me to the same file as the original puppet. I did a save as to a different name, but not sure how to link the two. @@okaysamurai

When you click the blue link, it's looking for the location of the PSD file. So if you select a different PSD file, that is the new one that will be linked.

Check that the puppet is independent (crown icon on top folder group) and the Transform behavior is on the top level next to eye gaze, face, etc. Make sure the eyeball toggle is on. If it persists, please post a screenshot to adobe.com/go/chfeedback for more direct help.

Hi! I'm having a problem where the walk behaviour is not available in the drop-down menu and the fix rigging issues icon isn't showing up. I have a Standing, Right PRofile and Left Profile groups with head and body and the body has +right leg, +left leg, +left arm, +right arm groups with hands/feet in them and a Torso group. Care to help?

Hey my charecter is not imitating me well i mean my pupil .may be it is because of my glasses but I cant work without them is there any way to do it manually with mouse and keyboard

Yes. Twirl open Eye Gaze on the right, turn off the red dot next to camera input, and try arming either mouse (click ands drag to move eyes) or keyboard (use arrow keys).

if anyone can help, it would be very much appreciated. :> I'm getting this error handle tagged as left pupil (left eyebrow, head, right pupil etc) is not being used as any behaviors. I have no idea what's wrong and how to fix :< Also the left eye pupil acts weird when i look up. the right pupil doesn't look up with it. thanks in advance!

Ugh! My hand trigger show up in a different location than my arms in record mode. Rig mode shows an outline of my hands that are not in that location. I'd whats wrong with this puppet😒😒

If you see the outline in rig but not in record, most likely there is a visibility issue - that means the shape is being considered part of the puppet, but it's turned off for some reason - usually a trigger or the eyeball icon being toggled off. Hi @okaysamurai ! I am stuck on a problem and would love a little help. I recently got a new imac and am running CA2020 and am trying to open a puppet that was made on my previous computer running CA2019. When it opens the puppet looks like a set of barcodes, with each layer being its own barcode. Cant find an answer for how to fix this...

That means the linked file is missing. In the project panel, select the puppet, then click the blue link text in the properties on the right. Select the file to link it to, and the colored bars will go away!

Might have fixed it...I was disabling record button but not the eyeball on the dragger behavior. For some reason, when I left the eye on it blew everything apart. Can someone explain that to me please?

Hard to diagnose here - if things are coming apart, most likely they are independent and aren't connected to a particular parent layer. By default your head movements will determine your body movements. If you want them to be different meshes, you can make either or both independent. but it will create a disconnected look.

Hi Dave, any idea why a character's mouth shapes would get messed up after updating an unrelated part of the puppet art? I added to her legs, and now her mouth shapes have a weird little "bump" in the middle of all of them, like it's not calculating the mesh correctly, but I didn't touch her mouth. Any idea what I could do to fix this?

...I just reverted to version 3.0 (the version I originally created the rig in) and that fixed it, so, must've been a bug with the new version. Guess I'm finishing this project in 3.0 :)

Hmm hard to say without seeing the puppet but my guess is something is pinning down the mouth unexpectedly, causing the bump. Hi, whenever I import a character, its head is squishy, I made most of the parameters independent, like eyes and eyebrows, yet I don't know which parameter is forcing my character's head to be squishy whenever I move my head around. Also, Should hair and colouring layers be merged with the Face background layer, or can I leave them separate?

Try selecting the Head group in rig mode and set the mesh shape on the right to "contour" instead of "auto." If that doesn't help please post a screenshot of rig mode (or your puppet) to adobe.com/go/chfeedback for more direct help.

Hi, my puppet often seems to close its eyes for long periods. I record using camera capture, and my eyes are not closed. Do you know what would cause this? Also, when I load my puppet, the background size seems to be random (zoomed in too big about 50% of the time) and I always have to adjust it. Do you know why this would happen? Sorry for the newbie questions.

The eyes shutting might be a calibration issue - make sure you press the Calibrate button under the webcam with your eyes wide open and you should get better results. Another option would be to remove the blink tags and just add them as triggers so you can have more control over your blinks (this is what I end up doing most often). Hmmm, I'm not sure about the background resizing issue - that should be something that stays consistent. If the problem persists, please upload a screenshot, video, or your File > Export > Puppet file to the official forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback so we can take a closer look.

Sorry for the silly question but what exact format does File > Export > Puppet file create? I had an artist create the puppet for me, and he gave me a bunch of files. Maybe I am loading them wrong. The one I am loading is ".chproj"

A .puppet file is your puppet artwork + rigging information, without any recording data. So you can think of them as your actor files. It's a more condensed way of sharing characters instead of an entire project file.

I downloaded the steve puppet from the adobe website, it was working perfectly and now it doesn't move his mouth at all and I don't know how to fix it. Any ideas?

If it is just the one puppet not working, I would re-import him and see if that fixes it. Also make sure all the red dots are on/armed on the right side when the puppet is selected, and your microphone is working - you can check with other puppets as well. Hello first time viewer, my animation teacher suggested your page. Ran into a problem i have no idea why its happenin. As im tryin to record, the right side of my face (left side of puppet) is either strecthin as i pull away or squishin as i get closer. Any suggestions?

First, try turning Face > Head Scale down to 0%. Next, if the face is pinching like this it usually means there's a rogue tag or extra hidden artwork layer or something holding it back. When you select groups / layers, if you're seeing a yellow rectangle instead of going around the contours of the shape, try setting the mesh on the right to "contour" instead of "auto." If it keeps up please post a video or screenshot at adobe.com/go/chfeedback for more direct help!

Hi! I was wondering if you could help me with an issue i'm having, but first of all i want to give a big THANKS YOU for all the amazing videos you share. I'm having a problem with a puppet i created and the Arm Ik doesn't detect the handles that i add. But i think that it must be a problem with the "body" because when i select it, its contour doesn't turn to green (i have a similar puppet and it works fine and the contour turn to green and also when i select the sleeve handle, for example, it point also have a green contour -in the new puppet it doesn't happen either). Update: I import it again and the green contour issue it's solved, but not the one of the ArmIK, one thing that i noticed is that in the place where the number of 'handlers' appear next to the name (body......Nro) in the body only appear a number 1. And only appear the number of handlers in each arm separated. If you know why could it be i would really appreciate the answer. Thanks from Argentina and keep teaching us please!

If Arm IK isn't showing the numbers next to the tags it means the behavior can't find them. If you haven't already, try putting an Arm IK behavior on the Body group itself and see if that helps. If you have the elbow, wrist, etc tags on the arms like the example characters, it should work. I would also check out Blank from adobe.com/go/chexamples as a good example puppet who has Arm IK and copy his setup. If you're still having problems, post a screenshot of your rig mode to adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we'll try to give you more direct help.

I couldn't get the Arm Ik to detect the tags on the body, but I found a workaround by creating two Arm IKs, one on each arm, and while rigging like this took a little longer, I was able to get it animated. Now I have to work on a new puppet, so I will be testing with more time. Thank you very much for the reply!

All the face components you want should be inside the group tagged "head." Also make sure that not everything inside is independent or they'll all want to move on their own. Take a look at the structure of characters like Chad or Chloe from the home screen to see how they set up their faces and compare to yours, it should help isolate where the issues are.

I was really hoping this tool would help me but it found no issues... My character's arm art is deforming wildly between the upper arm stick and the shoulder handle when I move the arm dragger. This doesn't seem to happen on example puppets with the exact same arm structure (the art seems to blend nicely between the shoulder handle and the stick on the example puppets). What might I be doing wrong? I noticed there's no yellow outline around my arm art when I click the arm layer, and I'm not sure why that's happening, or whether it's related to this issue. Any ideas?

Is the arm independent (crown icon)? That should show you the yellow outline. If not, make sure the "show mesh icon" icon is blue in the lower left corner of the Rig mode puppet panel (2 icons over from the rigging issues). My guess is the arm mesh is being considered bigger than you want it, whether it's stray artwork or something else, and causing weird warping issues. If it persists feel free to post videos / screens / your puppet file to the forums at adobe.com/go/chfeedback for more direct help.

@@okaysamurai I clicked "show mesh" and you are correct-- the mesh fills a random box around the arm artwork rather than the artwork itself. Any idea why Ch wouldn't be detecting the edges of the art? It's a Photoshop raster layer, but I can't find anything different about it from the example puppets that use Photoshop. Are there any common reasons why this happens? Interestingly, "create clipping mask" works properly, even though the mesh can't seem to detect the edges of the artwork. Thanks for your response!

...was playing around in Ch and figured out I can solve this problem by going into each one of my layers and under "layer mesh" change it from "auto" to "contour" so for now I'm just going to do that :) Thanks for your help! I would never have figured out the mesh was my problem.

Usually it goes to rectangle if it can't distinguish edges well enough or there are "islands" - floating artwork / specks. Auto normally works but every once in a while you might have to specify contour, depending on the artwork.

Hard to say without seeing anything, but if you think the artwork is there but it doesn't show up in Record mode, it's probably getting hidden by a trigger or behavior. No worries. Orange means the trigger doesn't have any layers associated with it. If you drag a layer into it, it will turn white again. Or you can delete them if you don't need them.

Hmmm that seems strange. And other arms from the example characters move fast for you? Then I'm guessing something must be up with the rig. Post a video or your .puppet file on adobe.com/go/chfeedback and we can help you diagnose more.

Sure, you could take a CH character and re-rig it in DUIK probably, since most characters have separate layers and groups for their parts. You would want to choose on or the other though, doesn't make sense to rig for both.
