Fluval Edge 6 gallon: Unboxing and Setup 

I was reaserching getting a new fluval tank and this was the top suggested video still 9 years later! Thanks Sean for setting this tank up for me all those years ago and continuing to make great videos.

This video saved me. The directions that come with the Fluval Edge do not clearly show you how to hang the filter on the back of the aquarium or hide the filter chord so that it is not wedged between the lid and the aquarium. This was the best!

I always thought they were cool aquariums, but I can't believe how small the opening is!

I have 2 of them, and love 'em both! Gorgeous, easy to keep clean (it is small, just a few minutes), and well worth it (but maybe just to me :))

It can be but mostly because you don't ever want to skip a week of water changes. If things go bad they go bad pretty quick. But that being said all I ever do is scrape the glass trim plants back and change 20% of the water. so about 10 minutes a week.

I love how pretty this tank is. I had one but there were 2 problems. The opening is too small and once the lights go out they r hard to replace without replacing the entire part and I'm not sure how that is done. Ended up trashing mine.

best starter tank ever I could never

After close to 40 years in fishkeeping, this and the fluval CHI were my only purchases last summer. Sold or gave away ALL my shit from lighting systems to 55 gals and moved from a house to a condo. NANO tanks were never on my radar, but with the accumulated years of experience, I figured I got this. I LOVE THIS TANK!!!!! Thanks for the quick and dirty aquascaping Peck. I simply duplicated it easily after digging through a box of old aqua stuff, finding the perfect driftwood. Everything looks Great! Bought the exact same BURNT ORANG3 to match my bedroom and maan does it pop! Of course sinc3 it’s the old model, I ended up with halogen, but I upgraded to the LED Bulbs. Thinking about buying the LED BAR - wondering if that migh5 be too bright (42 LED) an ruin the cool rustic groove on this…. Comments?

Cleaning the tank and trimming plants seems like it would be a pain in the ass with that small opening on the top. Also if you decided to restart the tank with new substrate it would be hard to get the old stuff out. Looks cool though.

I purchased one of these about a year ago. Like you said in one of your other videos: it is very hard to maintain and capture fish because of the tiny opening on top. You have a larger version (which is taller, in your other video) and that one is probably easier than the 6 gallon Fluval to get a net into. I find it so frustrating to get a normal sized net to maneuver around this tank! I also found the filter's waterfall disturbing my substrate because of the low profile (especially when the water level decreased). Lastly, the "old" version of lightbulbs, are actually quite dangerous. They get VERY hot and I found myself accidentally burning myself when I would lift the hood for maintenance. They are very cheap, as you said, I got mine on sale for $100 I think.

I had one of these tanks a few years ago and loved the look... but, the opening truly is a pain. I would suggest using your hands instead of a "tool"... hehe. BUt, that's me. Maintenance is not as fun with the opening and the lights do die. I like your LED idea much and if I ever get another, which I probably will do, I'll definitely get LEDs. Nice video though and very nice landscaping.

I found a fish tank in my back garden a few years back and I just found out that it was this model! It didn't have the filter or lights but I used it as a danio tank and got a new filter for it. I always wondered why someone would make a tank with such a small opening since it was quite inconvenient but now I know!

You can cut it anywere along the stem. Make sure you have a few leaves on both the cut pieces

You have a good eye for aquascaping.

Since you depend on using a magnet cleaning the glass i would never use sand and gravel in this tank. With soil there is less chance scratching the glass when it gets stuck in between the magnets.

I think the glass on top could be confusing. And the water is turbulent at the opening because the filter is there. So bettas won't be happy trying to get to the surface.

I’m thinking about getting one of these tanks. How would you rate it for the money it costs? Previously on another tank I’ve been using a clip in filter, the fluval filter is slightly different. How would I set this up? You talk about biological etc..

I've learned a lot about this fun hobby by watching pectec's videos.

Hi Pecktec, Thanks for posting this video on maintenance for the Fluval Edge 12 gallon. I just set one up a couple weeks ago and have been adding some low-moderate light plants: Anubias and Java Fern on driftwood, and Undulata planted in fluorite (the only substrate I used in this system). I wanted to add some floating plants (wisteria and dwarf water lettuce) and have kept the water level below the top glass -- do you think enough light will reach across the entire top surface for these floating plants?

Hi did you know that Hagen the company that owns Fluval also owns Aqua Clear filters? What that means is you have an AQUA CLEAR 20 so they can use it in a 6 gallon and a 12

Another fine video and educational video at that. What is the name of the plant to the right. Not the Lace Java fern or the anubus the smaller one planted in the substrate. Also do you sell any of your plants?

Fluval needs to remake this tank with either a bigger opening length and width wise or make the tank with a removable lid for aquascaping, water changes and floating the bags with the fish inside so the water in the bag can reach the same temp as the water in the tank. All in all, it's a nice looking tank.

I have watched Several of your video's and you often use more than one kind of substrate, this tank you only used the Eco-Complete Substrate, Can you effective grow plants with just the Eco-Complete, or do you need the others as well ? I have always had fish tanks but I have always used fake plants I want to start a tank with real plants so watching your video's are very informative. Thank you.

Hi i am not sure but i think there is a manufacturing flaw with this filter. The water pump sucks the water and it over flows straight out as there is no wall that separate the sucked in water (dirty) from the filtered water. The water should be channeled to the bottom of the filter and should make its way up through the medium please help me if i am wrong.

The substrate can be a hassle at first as it produces so much amonia but is can be worth it with patients

Fluval makes some of the coolest looking, non-functional aquariums. So much so that another company exists solely to make acrylic inserts for their filter compartments.

I wonder if there would be any problems with a betta. They need the surface of water to take small gulps of air

I've had one of those and though I think they're beautiful the size of the opening drives me crazy. Also, the next I get, if ever, which is very possible for a larger tank I will not use the inserts for the filter and just stuff it with foam from swiss tropicals.

Wow even back in 2013 these tanks came with an AquaClear 20 filter.....nice but that sealed top is a no go for me.

I can be, keep it away from windows for sure! Great for an office though where not natural light gets to it.

IMO: I own the 6 gallon Fluval "Edge" & I'm not a fan at all. It's a very hard tank to keep clean. The access hole at the top is way too small to really get in there & really manage the tank. The supplied lights aren't efficient enough for plants. I had to upgrade my lights to T5 lights at first & later purchased some good LED lights for my jungle Val plants. But if you're going to use the supplied lights, than maybe fake plants would be better. And the water flow in the tank is horrible. The corners of my tanks barely get any flow so a lot of debris builds up. It's hard to add an air stone because the bubbles tend to collect at the top, therefore hindering the view from the top panel of glass. And no matter what, bubbles will always find their way to the top panel of glass from the HOB water filter kicking up bubbles. I ended up cutting out the glue/caulking that holds the top layer of glass so now it's a fully open-top tank. But I would've been better off just buying a regular open-top tank to begin with. If you just wanted simple desktop fish tank with fake plants & 5-8 fish max then this wouldn't be a bad tank. But if you're a serious fish keeper who wants an easily accessible planted tank than this tank just isn't for you.

Fluval edge will be my next 5th tank..hehe...naughty thoughts!!!

I like the orange colored lights more , The blue/white colored light have been proven to confuse animals , fish and insects at night into thinking it is daylight disrupting their natural behavior .

We are replacing our daughter tanks, which is in her bedroom. We were sold a tank that only has a air pump, no filter at all (even though they said it was) and her plecs -"spook and kirk" died :-( As we need the tank to go in her bedroom, just how quiet is the Fluval. On your clips (which are great) I cant hear any noise? We would be grateful if you could let us know, before we invest. Many kind regards Lizzie (UK)

I was planning on switching to this tank, but find that because of the small opening, and that you can't open the actual "top" of the tank can get infuriating trying to aquascape. Is there another aquarium that is similar but offers more space at the top to put both your hands in and really get in there... Sorry that was confusing.

That looks great, i love it, but not loving the little top space you have to put the plants in etc, doesn't it make it a little hard to clean ?

I am going to buying this tank and it will be my first tank, any advice?
