In today's video I share with you some of my favourite ways to reduce food waste at home! From zero waste recipes, to worm composting, to making meal plans! These are just a few of the ways I try to minimise food waste whilst also having those fresh foods all throughout the colder months. I also love to meal prep for the month, so I'll be exploring new recipes and creating more sustainable and zero waste food content soon. I hope you enjoy this calm cooking video!

you can go to the bakery departments of large grocery stores and they will save their icing buckets for you. I have several I just picked up from my local grocery store and am going to plant arugula in them, but I may try your hydroponic method, too. What I love about re-using the icing buckets is they are food grade and are no longer ending up in the landfill!

I can also get the icing buckets easily from the bakery department , but I hate cleaning them. I'm in search for other free buckets that will be easier to clean (although I'm aware they will retain the smell for a while).

With the insane food prices of the current times, using up all one’s food and veggie scraps just makes sense and more cents!! Ⓜary💕🌿

You could cut a few more holes in your bucket and use it to grow strawberries in the spring. I have a similar setup. I've, also, seen a method of growing potatoes using 2 buckets you could look into..

Ask for buckets from a burger place. I do that from pickle buckets from my fast food job that just get tossed. They are five gallon food safe plastic

Hi, Immy. I am a recent subscriber and have been inspired by your videos to approach food preparation with a sense of fearlessness. Even if something is not perfect, as least I have learned a new skill. Regarding knitting: are you familiar with the work of Elizabeth Zimmerman? Her books taught me how to customize a pattern (or to make my own pattern) so that all my garments fit me! Most of her knitting involves circular needles, and her thumb trick REVOLUTIONIZED the way I knit mitts. I look forward to all your meal prep videos and to hearing about your reading journey

Wow, Immy. You don't stop to impress me with you food, zero-waste and gardening adventures. I always learn something new from you :) A quick question, can plants grow to their full maturity in hydroponic systems, even if they are kept inside during winter?
@megan2349
@megan2349 8 месяцев назад
Yes but you may need supplemental lighting based on where you live. I used to work on a farm here in the Northeast of the US and we grew hydroponic lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers all winter. We have MONTHS of grey skies and no sun so we had to use supplemental lighting. But if you are lucky enough to live in a sunny climate and have windows to the sun you might be all set and not need lights.

Had a stomach bug last week and wasn't able to eat anything but broth and a bit of crackers. All of the fresh food in the fridge went bad. The guilt I am continuing to feel after having to toss all that food is still eating me up. We have a small bit of woods in the backyard with some wildlife and put some of the food out there (carrots, spinach, cabbage). I should have done something about those items instead of having them just spoil while I was sick. Thank you for showing these ideas.
@LilaVert-FR
@LilaVert-FR 8 месяцев назад
Nobody can be perfect all the time. And it's ok, because the point is not to completely eliminate food waste (which would be impossible) but just do our best in reducing waste as much as possible. Instead of focusing to the guilt, try to think about all the food waste you have prevented during the last year.

After a summer of travelling I‘m finally back to watching videos as they get uploaded which I love! Can‘t wait for this video and I know for a fact that there‘s much more I can do in regards to food waste (although I do already compost which I guess is a big step already). Currently living back at home with my family and struggling to do projects the way I want them to because I have to respect other people‘s space (so no dehydrator or using the oven for hours on end for me, but I cannot wait for the day that I‘ll be able to dehydrate everything that I get in my hands lol)

@@missloly824 I have 4 small plants, don't have more space in my tiny apartment, I think I'd produce a lot more waste than they can take... Would be nice to know if it's a good option also for people without plants/garden or if then using the municipal green waste is the only option

I would be really interested in knowing if you can use any kind of plastic containers for plants that you are going to eat. I wonder if it would degrade and become potentially harmful both for the plant and the human. Have you researched anything in that regard?
@sunshineprinces
@sunshineprinces 8 месяцев назад
that is an interesting thought. I only know the plastic containers or for the seeds and for growing the plants the biodegradable cups or egg container.

Just had a look at lomi. Wish I could afford it. It always frustrates me that everything that is eco is so dear. We are under so much pressure from the government to change cars,exchange heating sources, make the right choices both for the planet and ourselves, but it seems like the prices don't reflect that. I believe the government should support all of the eco products in order to quickly shift people's behaviour and habits. Instead of that everything that is more accessible ( cheaper) is no good for us or the planted.....😢really annoying.
