Boston College takes on Miami in 1984 at the Orange Bowl. The Eagles take the game 47-45 on a last-second touchdown from Doug Flutie to Gerard Phelan. Video Courtesy: CBS
I was stationed in Korea in 1984. It was a real treat to watch this game from so far away. The game was tape delayed. The world was not connected instantaneously like it is today. I was stationed at Camp Stanley. Its a fond memory that brings me back in time.
Living in Nashville at the time of this game, our CBS TV affiliate did not air this game. Instead, the station aired some old movie so that a sponsor could sell windows. The station GM, a first class jerk who happened to be shacking up with Dawn Wells from Gilligan's Island, said that nobody cared about college football. He was roasted heavily in the media after this.
@@markz2644 I knew your father-in-law quite well. He was a great newscaster and along with weather man Bob Lobertini, Channel 5 dominated the local ratings. I also watched Bill's Woods & Waters Show and his playing Captain Bill for the cartoons.
BEST football game I've ever seen. I remember watching it in my senior year of high school and I was as completely blown away watching it today as I was back then. Thanks for the video my friend, great stuff indeed!👍 👍
Right with you Chris I was a Sophomore and My sister was at BC at the time! College football was so good then too!!!! Flutie Bernie Boz Bo McMahon Kelly Keep going!!!!!!!
This was Black Friday, Nov. 23rd, 1984. It also was my mother's birthday. My father and I took her out to dinner and then Dad and I watched the game. It was fantastic. Neither team could stop the other and the two teams combined for around 1100 yards of offense. A year later my father became ill and by the summer of 1986, he passed away . I would love to have a copy of this game on DVD
One word.....WOW! Just WOW! It is rare to see a game like this. A epic back and forth battle. But for it to end on the last play like it did! The was not just rare, but it was beyond special and amazing! That last pass from Flute was not human! Epic! Amazing!
This was one of the best football games in college history. Was such a battle all game!!! Put BC on the Map!!!! From then forward BC was a recognized name in College Football. Everyone forgets but Flutie hysteria was rampant in New England non BC people were wearing BC tshirts and sweatshirts and Flutie's picture was in many a girls lockers wether you like to admit it or not it was so. Was a GREAT time for BC.
@@howarddamico1237 God could America use Tip today!!!!! Great Memory. My Dad was a Golden Eagle. All I ever heard my whole life during games and beyond was......"Go You Eaglessssss!!!!" or like you said....."How bout them Eagles????""""
Before this game, no one ever heard of Doug Flutie. In this time period people were getting tired of Florida, Florida State, and Miami dominating college football. You have BC fans, you have Miami fans, and then you have underdog fans. The underdog fans far outnumber the team fans. After this game, everyone heard of Doug Flutie. The only bad thing about this game was the world's worst sports commentator -Brent Munsburger.
@@bobroth1951 Incorrect Flutie's name was everywhere in College Football from the time he was a Freshman!!!!!! Second Brent was a good announcer until later in his career!!!!! The Game did cement him for sure I will agree with you there. Also Everyone thinks that game is the reason he got the Heisman...yes it helped but if you listen to that game you will hear Musberger say" Something to the effect of WHen this Kid goes to to New York and picks up his Heisman Trophy!!!!!! It was pretty much known that he would win. Where are you from Bob???? Might make sense as to why you think that?
@@FreedomRock44 I am from Pa. Flutie was not that well known outside of the football college circuit, until this game. If you google "Worst sports announcers", Brent Munsburger is on many of them. He frequently got player's names and numbers wrong. He did not know what he was talking about most of the time. He did not know how to read ref's hand signals. He was so bad that when he was the announcer, I would turn off the volume on the TV and try to find the game on radio and listen to that announcer, instead of Munsburger, if I could not find the game on a radio station, I simply watched it without audio. It also seemed to me that he was rooting for the favorite team. I do agree that this is the best college football game ever.
@@bobroth1951 Actually, Flutie was very popular even prior to playing Miami. He was up top with all the collegiate passing records and Heisman candidate. This game made him the frontrunner. As for the Florida teams, the Florida Gators weren't a player during that point in time. Many years of violations from the Charlie Pell era and pre Spurrier. Florida State had yet to win a major bowl and wouldn't get their first title until a full 10 years later. Miami was on the map but only had the 1 previous title from 1983 and weren't great in 84. During this period the Big 8, Big 10, SEC, SWC and Penn State were still on top in college football.
I will add to that my whole family was down Cape Cod for Thanksgiving that weekend!!!!! We Jumped up and down my hands hit the ceiling when they won that game. I opened the door and listened outside and all you could hear was cheers and yelling. Scott Harrington's family had a place on our street further down as well. Part of yelling maybe?????
Some of the best things about this game, in addition to Kosar Vs. Flutie? None of the players have those idiotic fake-ass hair extensions, nobody dances, struts, flexes, or does gladiator poses for simply making a tackle, and we don't have to wait minutes on end while the commentators tell us again and again "it has to be indisputable video evidence." Good times.
And that's why I go back to the old-time broadcasts of my youth that I have on DVD (the '81 Rose Bowl, the '81 and '82 Orange Bowls and the '86 Fiesta from NBC, and the '87 Red River Rivalry from CBS, among others)-- today's games have far too much rock music and hype, and far too many graphics, in addition to what you said.
2:54:21. Second best part. Defending champ Kosar comes over and rips first-year coach Jimmy Johnson’s staff a new one, and tells the coaches what’s gonna happen, while Jimmy listens.
Coach Jimmy Johnson As a players National Championship at Arkansas in 1964 Head coach at Miami Hurricanes and a National Championship in 1987 with the Dallas Cowboys two Super Bowl Championship in 1992 and 1993 now in the Pro football Hall of Fame in 2020.
I liked how, after Bratton scored what he thought would be the winning TD for Miami, Doug Flutie of B.C. simply nodded his head calmly and went over to the sideline, as if to recognize the apparently herculean task ahead of him (drive down the field to beat Miami with a TD); of course, we all knew (maybe not then, but we certainly do now in hindsight) that he would be up to the task, and then some.
