Hi guys, Great videos 1-8. Rebuilding my C-351 from 1972 Mustang. You are the best channel on RU-vid!!!

This is so good to see. I've been doing this for 40 years (on everything with hydraulic lifters). It's amazing what you find on supposedly professionally built engines that come in for "tuning problems". Lifter preload is also my first go for rocker geometry issues as you mentioned. Great vid & great explanation.

I learned something valuable today. I always presoaked my lifters in oil as I was taught. I have a stock bore Cleveland that I'm building, and I'll follow your video. Done a bunch of windsor engines. But I've always loved the Cleveland. Chevy racers cry everytime a Clevo gets on the track. They say we have an unfair advantage, and the track outlaws them.

Soaking lifters in oil is the correct procedure. Never fit them dry.

I'm here state side in Los Angeles and building my first engine, a 351M 2V. This pre-load vid just took all the worry about wiping a cam lobe at first start. its a mild 252 .46 lift cam going into it.

Great. I didn't do this when I cranked my lifters down and then started my engine for the first time I was going to damage something! May have washed out the cam. As it is running rough now. But do not have a performance cam. All the lifters are moving properly. I don't see any issues. But rough running at about 2000 rpm. Idle is seemingly fine other than all the rocker noise. But after watching this I'm still not sure about preloading lifters. I'm wondering if there is a better explanation that I can understand, so when I replace my cam I won't do the same thing again and tighten everything down to torque specs on my 351C. No one ever told me I needed to shim the valve train! No one ever told me cleveland's needed a preloaded set of lifters. After watching video I need to know how to preload a lifter. Why I'm doing it, and what it is I'm doing it for. Thanks.
@thclevoking

All lifters come with a specified pre load setting. If you don’t get it in the ball park you will miss out.
@MrCbell57
@MrCbell57 2 года назад
@@thclevoking Thanks. The cleveland has no preload setting when it comes to adjustment. The rockers to torqued down to stopping point at so many foot pounds. There is no pre adjustment lash setting for these. At least no one talks about it or knows there is one. I found out the rough engine was due to a bad and faulty distributor throwing a intermittent spark. Now the non adjustable lifters work fine. No noise, no slap, no issues. So maybe I was right all along with my research. But the few people telling me I need to adjust a cleveland valve train are chevy people. ha.

Flat tappet cam failure happen to you? It did with my 351m build. One lifter lasted 25 minutes. Break in startup was perfect. Engine was fully oil primed, moly lube on the cam(which was installed by machine shop). .494 lift cam and FAIL. 1/16 lifter failure. Going roller now at a huge expense. Got any suggestions on roller rocker set, adjustable or not. Head been milled. 015 and deck .010. Comp Cam and lifters BTW.. Nothing crazy lift or duration 218° both sides and 110 LSA .494 Lift with stock rockers Thanks.

Ok this is on a dry engine, what is the procedure and torque process to install the rockers on an installed 351C engine with hydraulic lifters?

Really good advice in this video Ozzy - talk about devil in the detail ! I always just dropped lifters in and cranked rockers down - but that was with a virgin block and heads. The new clevo is decked 15 thou and heads milled 5 thou ( but no idea if they were ever machined before - maybe not, as exhaust seats were super receded ). Should I just get a new set of 20 thou shorter pushrods all round vs. shimming all the fulcrums up 20 thou ? Cheers guys, loving your channels 💪

I’d space the rocker up if it’s only .020 if it was .050 or .100 I’d get a new set of custom length

@@thclevoking 🙏 That's a huge help thanks - I have been hesitant to go ahead with the old stock pushrods also coz my open chamber heads have got EA/EL valve springs with the damper inner spring. My head mod guy said they only run 90 lb @ seat - I figured probz should get new pushrods in case the open pressure is higher ? Appreciate these super helpful vids and yer feedback 👍 Cheers, ig @john.krafty

Hello Clevo king. When setting up the pre load and shim the rockers should the cam be at base, not on lobe? Thank you
@thclevoking

Of course always do it on the base of the lobe.

Is it necessary to put adjustable studs in when u put a bigger cam lift my Cleveland has bolts for the rockers
@thclevoking
@thclevoking 3 года назад
It helps to be able to put lash in instead of pre load. Usually only use roller rockers on cams bigger then .540 lift or any solid cams.

I just show after a cam swap and any machine work to check the lifter pre loads. Most guys just do it up and that’s it, if pre load is too much you need to make a shim or use a shorter pushrod
