This video is a fairly comprehensive troubleshooting diagnostic walk through for a starting issue on a FORD Powerstroke Diesel engine.

~~HOT NO START DIAGNOSTICS:
A hot no start is generally caused by a substantial high pressure oil leak. Common leak points for a hot no start are;
LATE '04 TO '07:
~ STC Fitting (Under High Pressure Oil Pump Cover)
~ StandPipes/Dummy Plugs (Attach to Oil Rail)
ALL YEARS:

I learned the hard way using after market dummy plugs and injectors trying to save money. I use motor craft parts only now and it will save you a lot of heartache .

I had 3/4 tread on nitto grapplers and the thieves burned them bald in 4 days. I saw the video on the air test you did. I havnt owned the truck very long and i bet it has the old sct fitting. When i got it back it took longer and longer to start. Once it did start it ran just fine, no problems. Now it wont start at all. I will get to work on finding the leak. I'll update this with what I find. thanks for your help

The 1510 ICP and 64.6 Ipr reading your getting with the ICP unplugged is normal. It's just a default reading assumed by the computer since it's not getting an actual signal. You have a High Pressure oil leak somewhere or a bad IPR. Air test with the iPR closed to see if you can find the leak.

thank you all that put your videos. I have a 04 ford 6.0 super duty I drive it 45minutes and it dies I need to wait 20minutes and it will start again any ideas on sensors I should replace

I got the ScanGauge2 for my 97OBS It has less functions than on the 7.3 SDs but it is worth the retail.

My 02 7.3l power stroke has a hard time starting in cold weather. Once truck i get white smoke for at least one min.

Since some time I OWNER 2006 Ford F350 6.0 diesel. When trying to run, hpop pressure in the first 3 seconds is 0psi, for the next 3 seconds the pump is pumping up to 100 psi. After the next second the pump is pumping from 100 to 500 psi - then the engine starts up. Pump is new, proven IPR valve, the system was checked for leaks 120psi (air presure). I have took out the pcm power relay, and have started the starter, Max Pressure on high pressure strip was 1400psi. What else can I check ??? I have no more ideas.

I have a 7.3 turbo diesel got to work went to leave no start replaced fuel pump n filter glow plug sensor 7 of 8 glow plugs water sensor wiring harness batteries good fuses good but no start any suggestions everything points to brain but that has to be programmed with truck vin

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger Deisel. I have had a egnitionswitch that was bad but functional. you just had to turn the key 2-10 times to start. Now It only cranks but does not start. I did order a ignitionswitch but I can't find where it should fit. So I belive I got the one for a gas one and not diesel ? what do you think ?

Hi, I have a 2000 f350 with 7.3L power stroke. It does that noise that you showed when you are trying ICP pressure but mine never fires up the engine. The battery seems to be good and the fuel tank is full and the fuel is getting to the engine. Any ideas what the issue can be and how to fix it? Thanks

I don't understand... I bought a Vgate ELM327 looks just like the one in the video, also bought BAFX Products Bluetooth OBD2 Scan Tool for Check Engine Light and other Diagnostics along with the extension cable and Torque Pro for Android. I was able to connect to both devices but the display results were just general info and nothing like needed shown on the video here. The software did not pick up differences in info from the two devices that I could see. There were no sensor readings that came close to shown in this video. This is for a 2006 F350 6.0L Diesel. Cranks, no start (sometimes). I did find a fault code P0335 but not sure if it was old or recent so I cleared the code to see if it comes back. Once again, the engine was hard start... Turn off the key, try again usually fires right up. No fault codes... I bought all of the stuff because I wanted to see the voltage readings like shown here. The sensors come with their own software mini disc for PCs, but they too only show rpms, speed, fuel remaining, mpg, etc.. Nothing diagnostic. I looked for additional plugins in a list provided, saw nothing for Ford. Can you help? Thanks

Help ! Customer ran out of fuel several times and now they wont start...po1095..inertia switch..we reset the switch (clik) but we are very lost to find why pcm command the switch...we have clean fuel delivery to secondary filter but no injection at all...self test the injection module and he's ok.. ..

I took tore it down and could not hear an oil leak. I was surprised to see the stc fitting had already been replaced with the new one. I put the air back to it and only heard some noise below the oil pump. Like air bubbling in the oil pan. My icp was 7 no crank and 7 when cranking, it didnt change at all. Is there away to check the oil pump to see if it is functioning.

You can pull the ICP and give it a quick crank. If oil shoots out (watch out) it is pumping. You may have a bad ICP sensor as well. The test for this is to unplug the connector and try starting it. The computer will assume a default value since it is not receiving a signal.

If you are not getting any air leak sounds with the IPR commanded closed and full shop air pressure, you may have an oil supply issue or a pump issue. Have you checked to make sure you are getting low pressure oil?

With the icp unplugged I had 1500 icp and 66 ipr but no difference. Didn't try to start.

Yes I have low pressure. Fills up the oil filter when cranking. I don't have a way to command ipr closed. I just shot air to it with key off and only heard bubbling noice from below oil pump.

Eric Dieckman That's the problem right there. If you don't command the IPR closed or feed it 12V from the battery, all of the air will just escape out the IPR. It has to be closed to send the pressure to the oil rail and injectors. If you feed it 12V directly, don't leave it connected for more than a min or 2 each time.

I'm not familiar with Houston. If you want to do it yourself, start reading and watching videos and find a machine shop that has worked on the 6.0l .

I got one,it’s a 6.4 the customer drove the truck til it ran out of diesel now it has extended long cranks when hot. Before that it will start just fine,it would start before turning the key.🤨😤😡🤬

Looks like you opted for the Bluetooth one with your phone app? Also, is there only one Torque app or do you need a special plugin for the IPR/ICP diesel monitoring stuff? I found the Torque app on play, but I dont see where it monitors those items.

You need the Pro Version not the Free version. The Free version DOES NOT HAVE THE PIDS programmed in. You can do it manually much like a scanguageII but it is just as tedious. For $4.99 you get ALL of the custom PIDS for ALL cars. i know my time is worth more than $4.99 times the number of hours it would take me to manually enter in all of the formulas.

cr38er or anyone ever heard of an ICP leak that was intermittent? I've got a 97 PSD 7.3 that started out with a "no start when hot" problem. I changed my IPR and ICP sensor and thought that fixed it. Then the “no start when hot” came back intermittently. Now, when it doesn't start, my ICP pressure only hits 350ish. When it does starts, it fires right up with >800-1000 ICP. During my troubleshooting I noticed the ICP pigtail would change the idle speed of the engine when bumped, so I wired in a new pigtail. Initially, when I rewired the ICP pigtail, I had the signal and signal return wires on that pigtail crossed (unknowingly) but it still started. I went back and rechecked the wiring, rewired it correctly and now it isn't starting at all. I’ve pulled the ICP connector and tried to start with no luck. I feel like it’s electrical, but not positive. All fuses inside and outside the cab check good. I just bought the Torque Pro app. Torque Pro live data seems normal but for some reason I can't get it to pull DTC's. I’m frustrated and was looking for ideas.

You may have a chafed wire somewhere. Check your 5V reference voltage while wiggling wires and connectirs

yes i bought the auto enginuity pc scan tool pro line vci. okay my question is on the live data meter drop box were you make ur selectons on what sensors you want to monitor. mine does not give me the option for the ficm main power option. why? do i need a enhancement for this to be possible

You do need the FORD package to read all of the PIDs and do the self tests and power balance.

Got a 2004 f350 6.0l swapped injector number 4. Husband released pressure under injector and flooded the system. Now leaks diesel fuel from right over the oil pan. Won't start. Starter just clicks. Only reads code for KAM sensor.

Sounds like you need new injector O-rings to start with. Beyond that will have to go symptom by symptom.

Yes. There are 3 different versions of the ELM327 bluetooth adapter on ebay:\ ~ a large black version ~ a medium sized blue version ~ a small blue version We have tested all 3 and they work fine. I personally use the medium sized blue version daily 24/7 to monitor my truck and have not had a single problem with it

Ok here's one I have a 04 f350 6.0 driving and whole truck would shut off. Cranked it a few dozen times and it would start. Repeatedly did this. Any ideas?

Wayne Rowland Probably a high pressure oil leak. You need Torque Pro on Android, Ford IDS, ScanGauge II, or a tuner to monitor your ICP while running and cranking. Links in the video description.

Hi. I have a 1996 7.3L no start. I've run the scanner looking at the same numbers you have up there while cranking. I'm wondering if based on this information you can help me diagnose if it's either the IPR valve, a high pressure leak, or something else. I've already ordered a new IPR but I'm wondering if I should pull out the HPOP while I wait. The high pressure oil reservoir is completely empty (I stuck an 8" straw down the little plug at the top of the reservoir and the straw came out dry), and I'm slightly overfilled on oil (maybe 0.5qt over full on the regular dip stick). On crank I get Revs: > 120, PW: 0.42ms, IPR: 54, HPOP was mostly 0 but at one point spiked to 2700 for a second then back to 0 psi. Thanks for any advice you've got.

Have you tried with the IPC disconnected? Sounds like the IPR. You can remove it, disassemble clean and replace the o-rings. That can help. Had similar problem. Gunk in the IPR. cleaned and worked fine.

i have a 1999 ford f250 7.3l and when i was driving to work one day i noticed it was losing power and when i pulled over and turned the truck off thats the last time it started but yesterday when i tried messing with it the starter comes try to fire the engine up but the truck wont start. i need help please

I try think u may have a few litres/quarts I f oil short, or your hoop switch needs replacing, injectors may need replacing, as for cld starts there is a few things u can do

I have an 00' 7.3 for the past 2 years. come some chilly weather I find my rig wont want to start on first crank. I have to cycle the key 3 times and then it will fire up. summer no problems and if plugged in heater no problem. its the days it goes down to 40-50 degrees. any thoughts? I do have a WVO system too(if that has any impact)

Douglas A I have a 2000 f-350 does the same thing but won't start in cold weather even if I cycle glow plugs 6 times. I give it a sh of either it'll start and die, after a few shots of either it stay running but runs very sickly until warm then runs fine and starts fine when warm or plugged in

@@scotteudaley8421 I had same problem with my 2000 7.3L F-250. Turned out to be an intermittent glow plug relay. Corroded contacts inside the relay. Some times it would make contact, sometimes would not. Plus I bet it had a lot of voltage drop even when it did make contact, with all the current that has to go thru it.

Does the air test work the same for the 7.3 as it does for the 6.0? Close the IPR and air in through the ICP?

Technically yes, but HPO leaks on a 7.3 are rare and not really something you need to go through the trouble testing for

+SuperDuty I've developed a long crank/no start when hot on my 7.3. I've changed the icp, ipr and injector orings. It dint help. I'm hoping this test will let me know if I have hpo bleeding off somewhere. Great video by the way.

I have a 2007 6.0 With scan guage I was only getting 7 ipc when cranking and 84.7 ipr. I removed the ipc sensor and then registered 1510 icp and 64.6 ipr. fmc stayed at 48 the whole time. sycn was at 1. it still never tried to fire. I have fuel in the bowl, looks clean. I can hear the fuel pump kick on. My truck was stolen and when i got it back it ran for a few day but right away i noticed it took longer to crank. I had a sct tuner on performance tune with egr off that was stolen aswell. help

Yes, It will read all available PIDS that you can normally read with ScanGuage II, AutoEnginuity and IDS.

Farid Mahfoud it will show it in torque pro and any scanner. look for injection control pressure. on Torque pro you have to load the extra does POD set from options

+pam papamechail Pam, try unplugging your fuel heater, the connector is located directly behind the fuel bowl, it is a SINGLE CONNECTOR. I did this with the same problem and have had no more issues. If you live in a warmer climate, you do not need it connected. I live in eastern Oregon where it hits 0 to below 0 at times and have had no issues.

the fuel heater inside the fuel bowl shorted out. unplug it from the side of the fuel bowl replace fuse and get the truck home.then order new fuel heater and plug it back in problem solved.

Just picked up the newest version of Auto Enginuity for a 2000 Powerstroke that my wife bought, and apparently they've done away with the FICM Main Power selection. I'm having trouble with cold starts, and I'd sure like to check that module, but I can't find anything that replaced it in the menu. Any ideas? Thanks John-Henry

Yep: PIcked it up from Riff Raff with the Enhanced Ford Package (SPO3, Version 13.30). I have three 7.3's, so I figured that it would be worth it, particularly since I'm a long long way from any decent diesel mechanic. I've only been using it for a few days, and it's fairly complex software in some ways, but I know my way around software and computers, and I'll be damned if I can find any selection in the dropdown menus that will allow me to check the voltage coming from the FICM.

Could be a bad ICP sensor. Unplug the ICP and see if it fires up.

SuperDuty The valve cover you keep referring to is the RIGHT SIDE valve cover. Not the left

My 2004 Super Duty with the 6.0 is very difficult to start the first time of the day. Starts and stalls, runs rough. once running it smooths out and for the rest of the day starts immediately. what have you found that would cause this?

If you are having problems with starting when cold, but no problem when warm, then either glow plug relay, glow plugs, or worn injectors. Could be low HPO pressure due to bad IPR/IPC. or a HPO leak. Could also be a fuel pressure issue. By cold I mean below ~45F and engine has had a chance to cool down completely.

@@johnwythe1409 I am having this exact issue Everything checks out on my truck, but it cranks for 5 mins before starting 5 MINS! Ficm sync yes, battery voltage 13.4, ficm voltage 47.5 on the low when cranking 49 when not, icp 900-1400 ish ipr 65% on the highest side damn thing just won’t start

@@chapmanhere3397 Sounds like either the Glow plug solenoid, glow plugs, or the connector that goes through the valve cover. Usually my batteries would not last that long in cold weather to get mine started. Turned out to be an intermittent glow plug solenoid. When I first tested it I was getting voltage through it, by the time I got around to checking the the connector and the glow plugs, it had failed completely, so I was confused when the connector and all the glow plugs checked out. After changing a set of injector o-rings I went back and checked the solenoid again, and it was completely bad. Somehow water or coolant had got inside the solenoid and corroded the contacts. Replacing the solenoid fixed the issue. Starts well without being plugged in down to about -10C ~ 18F. Note: I have heard that too high of a ICP value can cause hard starting as well.

I am looking to purchase a 95 psd f250. Has 220k miles on it. It supposedly is a bit hard to start. In layman's terms, could you summarize what the potential issues could be? What I got from the video is that either the sensors that tell the engine's main computer when to execute fuel injection into the cylinders are bad or the high pressure oil pump has a leak somewhere. Or there is a leak...somewhere in some system? Could it also be something more simple, like maybe the glow plug relay went bad? Thanks for your help, and I apologize for my ignorance.

a 95PSD it may be a Glow Plug Relay. These go out a lot on the 95-96

A lot. I would never run under 14 quarts personally. I did run all the way home from Canada with a blown cylinder eating oil the whole time and did get quite low. You have to be bone dry to not feed the HPOP. You provably have other things going on like an HPO leak. cr38er

They were trying to save money i guess, when it comes to diesel engines you just don't ever do that.... i work for GM training to be a diesel tech, when i see a truck come in with thos SHITTY Cat fuel filters i Always strongly reccommend putting the right one on, thos cat and napa fuel filters for a duramax save you like 30 bucks, until one comes apart and you spend 6 grand on injectors and a new pump, seen it...

For sure they had their own set of unique problems. Computers with sensors can do more fine tuning and get better mileage, but as soon as a sensor or control goes bad, nothing works. Older pre computer models used mechanical feedback loops. The best thing about them is they will still work after an EMP kills all the computerized vehicles. Lol

Nick, chances are it's your ficm. If not, your injectors. To cr38er.. Lmfao.. You say make sure you have the correct oil filter and cap.. Yet you yourself have the WRONG cap. Also, do not leave the ipr energized more than 90 seconds. 10-15 mins and you'll be putting that new one in it.

Its sucks you had a bad experience but it was just that a bad experience. Because overall a diesel is a superior engine. Youd be lucky to get too far over 300,000 miles on a gas engine. But I know many people that bring their diesels over the 500,000mile threshold and theyre still running strong and thats just for pick ups big rigs can push 1million miles.However I do not recommend diesels to people who do not take care of their cars. If you are religious about the maintenance its gonna last forever. Same could be said with many things you get out what you put in. But there have been an occasional terrible engine models from time to time over the years. If you dont mind me asking what kind of diesel did you own?

I have a 7.3 turbo diesel got to work went to leave no start replaced fuel pump n filter glow plug sensor 7 of 8 glow plugs water sensor wiring harness batteries good fuses good but no start any suggestions everything points to brain but that has to be programmed with truck vin

+Valerie Wheeler Hi Valerie. You need some way of monitoring your Trucks High Pressure Oil. The Best way is to buy an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter and purchase "Torque Pro" from the android play store (Yes you need the pro version). This is the best $15 you can spend on your truck: www.amazon.com/dp/B00OMT6UEK/?tag=yclick-20 Once you have it setup, you will monitor "Injection control pressure" it needs to be at least 500PSI for the truck to start.
